Choose a USB CD/DVD drive if you need to read CDs or DVDs; choose a Blu-ray-capable drive only if you need Blu-ray discs too. But neither kind is confirmed to work with a retail Steam Frame: Valve lists a USB-C data port, and an optical-drive-related kernel change has appeared in a public source mirror, but that does not prove the change is in a shipped update or that a drive, movie app, or older PC game will work. Check the Frame’s installed software, the drive’s power needs, and the software required for your task before buying.
What is the practical difference between USB CD, DVD, and Blu-ray drives for Steam Frame?
The main difference is which discs the drive’s manufacturer says it can read—not whether it has a USB-C plug. A CD/DVD drive covers the common CD and DVD formats; a Blu-ray drive adds Blu-ray support and often lists CD and DVD compatibility as well. The exact format list matters, especially for specialty discs. None of these format labels establishes Steam Frame compatibility.

| CD/DVD drive: Verbatim External Slimline CD/DVD Writer 98938 | Manufacturer says it reads and writes CD and DVD media; Blu-ray is not advertised. | USB-powered; includes a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter. | A format match for CDs and DVDs, but USB power, disc mounting, and software support on Frame remain unconfirmed. |
| USB-C Blu-ray drive: Verbatim Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray Writer 43888 | Manufacturer lists Blu-ray, DVD, and CD burning capability. | USB-C and USB-powered, according to the manufacturer. | Adds Blu-ray as a disc format; it does not establish movie playback or verified 4K playback on Frame. |
| Separately powered Blu-ray drive: ASUS BW-16D1X-U | Manufacturer lists CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and BD-ROM reading. | Requires a separate 12 V, 3 A adapter; its cited operating-system list does not include SteamOS. | Illustrates a power arrangement distinct from a portable USB-powered drive, not a confirmed Frame setup. |
The examples clarify the buying decision, not a compatibility ranking. Manufacturer format specifications are evidence of the discs a product is designed to handle. They do not certify that Steam Frame recognizes the device, supplies adequate power, or has the right application to use the disc.
Does Steam Frame support USB optical drives?
That is not established by the available evidence. Valve’s published specification lists one rear USB-C 2.0 port for charging and data, but does not state how much power that port can supply to an accessory. A public change to a mirrored Frame kernel source tree adds three optical-drive-related settings, but a source-code change is not proof that the settings are included in a retail update or that an external drive works.

The three settings in the mirrored commit are CONFIG_CDROM=m, CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m, and CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=m, changed in arch/arm64/configs/gabe_defconfig. They indicate that optical-drive-related kernel modules are configured as modules in that source tree. They do not demonstrate that the modules are present and loaded on a particular headset, that a drive is recognized, that a disc mounts, or that movie playback software is available. The repository is an unofficial mirror, not Valve’s official GitHub account.
In an October 2026 Steam Community discussion, a Frame owner described trouble with a detachable disc drive. A Valve-tagged developer replied, “we will look into this thanks for alerting us”. That response acknowledges the report; it is not an announcement that support has shipped. The subsequently visible mirrored source change is relevant evidence of development activity, but it should not be combined with the user report to claim that USB DVD or Blu-ray support is now available to all owners.
Valve’s support guidance recommends installing available system updates, but the cited material does not confirm that this particular source change reached a retail Frame update. The important status question is therefore not simply whether a kernel change exists: it is whether the exact Frame build in use includes and loads the relevant support, and whether the selected drive and software work with it.
Is USB-C enough to make a drive work?
No. A connector that fits solves only the physical-connection question. The drive still needs compatible operating-system support, enough power, a readable disc, and suitable software for the task.
Valve lists one rear USB-C 2.0 port for charging and data. Its published specifications also list a maximum charging input of 45 W, but that is power going into the headset—not an accessory-output rating. It cannot be used to infer how much power the port can deliver to an optical drive. The specification does not provide a USB accessory power budget.

Some portable drives draw power over USB. The Verbatim 98938, for example, is described as USB-powered and includes a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter. That adapter may help with connector fit, but it does not convert a drive into a supported Frame accessory or prove that the headset can supply the drive’s power needs. The Verbatim 43888 is marketed as a USB-C, USB-powered Blu-ray writer, but the same distinction applies.

ASUS specifies a separate 12 V, 3 A adapter for the BW-16D1X-U. Its cited operating-system list omits SteamOS, so the adapter specification is a power detail—not a compatibility assurance.
Why might a drive spin, fail to spin, or fail to appear?
Power and device recognition are separate failure points. One Frame owner reported that a detachable drive would not spin using power from the headset and later sought a powered hub; their first splitter attempt did not suffice. That is one person’s report, not a measurement of every Frame, port, cable, hub, or drive.
A powered USB-C hub with data ports may be a troubleshooting path when a bus-powered drive appears to need more power, but no particular hub or electrical arrangement is validated here as a Frame solution. A splitter is not necessarily equivalent to a powered hub: it may not provide a suitable power source or preserve the connection the drive needs. Avoid assuming that any accessory labeled “powered” will fix the issue without checking its design and the drive’s requirements.
If a drive does not spin, first check its own power requirements and cable arrangement. If it spins but does not appear in the system, power alone is not the explanation: the retail build may lack or fail to load the necessary support, or the device may not be recognized for another reason. If the disc appears but the intended content does not open, move on to the software and format questions rather than treating the symptom as a power problem.

Frame’s hardware is ARM64 and the headset runs SteamOS 3, according to Valve’s specifications. A drive’s included software may instead be written for Windows. Hardware recognition does not make Windows-only utilities usable on Frame, and PC-oriented bundled software is not evidence of a compatible SteamOS application.
Will a drive let me watch DVD or Blu-ray movies?
Not by itself. A drive that reads a movie disc provides access to the physical media; a compatible playback application is a separate requirement. The Verbatim CD/DVD product says DVD movie playback requires separate DVD playback software and that the software is not included. The Verbatim Blu-ray product likewise does not include playback software.
Bundled software does not close this gap automatically. Verbatim says the Nero software bundled with the 98938 is Windows-only. Its Blu-ray product’s advertised 4K playback capability is a product claim, not evidence of verified 4K playback on Steam Frame. The cited ASUS operating-system list also does not include SteamOS. Before buying for movies, establish that the Frame build can recognize the drive and identify a playback application that supports the required disc format and works on the headset.
Do not treat “Blu-ray capable” as a guarantee that every kind of Blu-ray movie will play. The manufacturer’s disc-format list answers what the drive supports; it does not answer whether the Frame has the software, format handling, or other support required for a particular movie. The available evidence does not establish successful commercial DVD or Blu-ray playback on a retail Frame.
Can I install or play an older physical PC game from disc?
A disc drive can be only one part of that process. The installer must be readable, the required software must work on Frame, and the game itself must be compatible with the headset’s execution environment. Reading or mounting a game disc does not guarantee that its installer, copy-protection system, or executable will run.

Valve describes different execution models for PC-streamed and standalone use. A PC game intended to run on a desktop cannot be assumed to run natively on the headset just because its files are accessible. If the plan is to stream from a PC, the relevant question may be whether that computer can install and run the game; if the plan is to run it on Frame, the game and its dependencies must suit the headset’s environment. The optical-drive source change does not answer either compatibility question.
Check what the game actually requires before choosing a drive: whether it uses a CD, DVD, or multiple discs; whether the disc is only an installer or also needed during play; whether an activation or protection service is required; and where the game is expected to run. Those requirements can matter more than choosing between a DVD-only and Blu-ray model.
Which drive should I buy for each kind of disc?
Choose by the discs you need to access, then treat Frame support as a separate unresolved check. A CD/DVD model is the straightforward format choice for CDs and DVDs; a Blu-ray model is necessary when Blu-ray discs are part of the task.

- CDs only: A drive whose manufacturer explicitly lists CD reading is the format match. No named CD-only model is confirmed here, so check the manufacturer’s exact format list rather than relying on a generic product title.
- CDs and DVDs: A CD/DVD drive such as the Verbatim 98938 is explicitly specified for both. It does not advertise Blu-ray reading, so do not select it for Blu-ray discs.
- CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray: Choose a Blu-ray-capable model whose manufacturer lists the formats you need. The cited Verbatim 43888 and ASUS BW-16D1X-U list Blu-ray alongside CD/DVD formats, but their software and power arrangements differ.
- Movies or disc-based games: Match the drive to the disc format, then separately verify playback or game software. A drive’s ability to read the media is not the same as the ability to use its contents on Frame.
For a compact portable drive, bus power and a convenient connector can reduce the amount of gear to carry. They do not guarantee operation from Frame. A model with a separate adapter adds bulk and needs a power outlet, but its external power supply changes the power arrangement; it still does not establish SteamOS support. Decide whether portability or a separate power supply better fits the task only after checking the drive’s manufacturer specifications.

- Check the installed Frame build. Install available system updates using Valve’s support guidance, then verify whether current official release information specifically confirms optical-drive support. The existence of a mirrored source change is not a substitute for that confirmation.
- Confirm the exact disc formats. Read the manufacturer’s supported-media list for the precise model. Check for CD, DVD, and Blu-ray individually, including any specialty format the task depends on.
- Identify the drive’s power arrangement. Determine whether it is USB-bus-powered or requires a separate adapter. Do not interpret the Frame’s 45 W maximum charging input as a USB accessory-output allowance.
- Check the physical connection and data path. Confirm whether the drive uses USB-C or USB-A and whether an adapter is included or required. Connector compatibility does not guarantee that data communication or operating-system recognition will work.
- Name the software task. Decide whether you need data access, DVD-video playback, Blu-ray movie playback, disc burning, game installation, or game execution. These are distinct outcomes, with different software requirements.
- Check software and operating-system requirements. Do not assume bundled Windows software will run on SteamOS 3 or that movie software is included. Confirm that a suitable application exists for the intended use on Frame.
- Plan for an unresolved power issue without assuming a fix. A powered hub could be considered if a bus-powered drive does not receive adequate power, but no specific hub has been validated here for Frame. Check the drive and hub specifications and buy with a return option if compatibility remains uncertain.
What is confirmed—and what is still unknown?
The evidence supports a narrow conclusion. Valve specifies the headset’s port and operating system; manufacturers specify their drives’ disc formats and, in some cases, power arrangements; a mirrored kernel-source change contains optical-drive-related configuration settings. These are different evidence levels and should not be collapsed into a claim of a working setup.
| Question | What the available evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Does Frame have a data connection? | Valve lists one rear USB-C 2.0 charging-and-data port. | The port’s accessory-output power budget or support for a particular optical drive. |
| Is optical-drive support being addressed in source? | A public change in a mirrored source tree adds three optical-drive-related module settings. | That the change is in a retail build, loaded, or sufficient for drive recognition. |
| What discs do the cited drives handle? | Manufacturer pages specify CD/DVD or Blu-ray/DVD/CD formats for the named models. | That those discs mount or can be used on Frame. |
| Can Frame play movies or run legacy PC games from disc? | The cited drive pages distinguish playback software from drive capability; Valve describes PC-streamed and standalone models. | Successful commercial-movie playback, game installation, protection compatibility, or native execution on Frame. |
No measured Frame optical-drive success rate, movie-playback rate, or battery-life impact is established. The available evidence also does not identify a validated hub or a named drive demonstrated to work with a retail headset. For now, the safe buying decision is conditional: select the format that matches the disc, but do not treat USB-C, a vendor’s format list, or a source-code change as a Frame compatibility guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a USB DVD drive with Steam Frame without a hub?
Possibly, but there is no confirmed retail-Frame demonstration for a named drive, and Valve does not publish the port’s accessory power budget. A bus-powered drive may therefore face a power issue even if its connector fits.
Does a Steam Frame USB recovery drive prove it can read DVDs?
No. USB recovery media and an optical drive are different functions, and recovery support does not demonstrate optical-drive recognition or movie playback.
Will a DVD or Blu-ray drive burn discs on Steam Frame?
A manufacturer’s claim that a model can burn discs describes the drive’s capability with suitable host software. It does not establish compatible burning software or successful disc writing on Steam Frame.
Does the 2026 kernel change mean Valve has officially enabled DVD support?
No. The change is in an unofficial source mirror, and the available evidence does not confirm that it is included in a retail update. Check official release information for the installed build rather than inferring shipped support from source configuration.
