WordPress.com says backups run at least once every 24 hours and more often when the site changes frequently. That removes a common failure mode—an owner installing a backup plugin and never configuring its schedule.
What does Jetpack include?

Retention varies by product. What happens when Jetpack storage is full?

Why is configuration quality decisive?
UpdraftPlus can be safer than a managed service for an owner who wants independent copies and provider choice, but the plugin does not remove operational responsibility. For a high-change store, a once-daily snapshot may leave too much unprotected work. For a low-change site, frequent copies matter less than retaining enough history and proving that a restore works. Custom tables, multisite networks and files outside the normal WordPress tree favor a solution whose documented scope explicitly includes them.

How do retention and storage limits change the safety equation?
Retention determines how far back you can go after discovering silent corruption, an undetected compromise or an accidental deletion. Storage limits can also stop future backups, so the nominal schedule is not a guarantee that copies continue indefinitely.

Keep at least one copy outside the production host and, when possible, a second destination. A second copy protects against a deleted account, a failed storage provider or credentials stolen from the first destination.
