Seeing round “orbs” in a photo or video can feel unsettling—especially when they appear consistently in similar scenes. The good news is that camera optics and processing create plenty of orb-like artifacts, and most have straightforward causes.

This guide helps you identify what’s likely happening, run quick tests, and fix the problem without jumping to conclusions. You’ll also get a clear checklist for when the issue points to hardware cleaning or a specific camera setting.

What counts as an orb on camera

In practice, “orbs” usually fall into a few visual categories:

  • Bright circles or smears near lights (street lamps, headlights, LEDs)
  • Soft, glowing dots that look like bokeh but don’t match the scene depth
  • Moving circles that appear and disappear between frames
  • Dark/bright spots that stay fixed in the same place across multiple photos
  • Halos around high-contrast edges (signs, faces, screens)

The “where” and “how” matters. Orbs near strong light sources often point to reflections, flare, or lens contamination. Orbs that stay perfectly fixed across images often point to a speck on the lens or sensor.

The most common causes (and how to recognize them)

1) Lens flare and reflections

When bright light hits the lens at an angle, internal reflections can produce circular highlights. They’re more common at night, around headlights, and with glossy surfaces (windows, mirrors, wet pavement).

Clue: The orb position and brightness change when you shift your angle or block the light with your hand or hood.

2) Dust, lint, and scratches on the lens

A tiny speck on the front element can catch light and bloom into a glowing orb, especially in high-contrast scenes. Even fingerprints can create haze-like circles.

Clue: You can often spot the artifact at different sizes but it tends to appear repeatedly in similar compositions. Cleaning the lens usually improves it immediately.

3) Dirty camera sensor (or internal optics)

If a spec is on the sensor, the artifact usually appears in the same spot across multiple images because the sensor doesn’t move relative to the lens.

Clue: The orb is stationary across frames, and it’s most visible against bright, uniform backgrounds (sky, white walls).

4) Condensation, fog, or humidity haze

Moisture on the lens or inside the housing can scatter light into glowing circles, particularly in humid environments or after moving from cold to warm.

Clue: The whole image looks slightly hazy, and the orbs may intensify as the optics warm up.

5) Autofocus/exposure behavior creating bokeh or halos

Modern phones and cameras use heavy computational processing. Autofocus hunting can shift the sharpness plane, turning tiny light sources into large, soft orbs. Exposure also affects bloom around bright areas.

6) Motion blur and rolling artifacts

In video, moving lights can smear into circles or crescents when shutter speed and motion interact. With fast pans or low light, you may see “orb trails.”

Clue: The artifact changes shape frame-to-frame during motion.

7) Compression, noise reduction, and AI post-processing

When the camera compresses footage (especially social media uploads), denoise and sharpening can create halo-like circles around bright points. Some “enhancement” modes amplify this effect.

Clue: The orb looks worse after sharing/uploading, and it may disappear when you compare the original file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8) Strobe/LED flicker and shutter timing

LEDs and some screens flicker at frequencies that can conflict with shutter timing. That mismatch can make lights appear to “pulse” or form odd patterns that resemble floating orbs.

Clue: Orbs correlate with specific lighting (LED bulbs, signage, certain room lights) and vary between shutter speeds or frame rates.

9) Screen reflections from the environment

You can get “ghost orbs” from reflections of nearby screens, windows, or TV displays bouncing into the lens.

Clue: The orb resembles shapes/colors from nearby devices and changes as you change your position.

Quick tests you can do in 10 minutes

Before you clean anything or change settings permanently, run a few simple checks. These tests usually identify whether you’re dealing with flare, dust, focus/exposure, or processing.

Test 1: Change your angle and block light

Take a photo of the same scene, then shift your camera 10–30 cm to the side and try again. Next, use your hand or a piece of matte fabric to block the light source from hitting the lens directly.

If the orb moves or disappears: it’s almost certainly flare/reflections. If it stays fixed: it’s likely a speck on lens/sensor.

Test 2: Clean lens vs. leave it untouched

Wipe the lens gently with a microfiber cloth. If you have it, use lens cleaning fluid designed for optics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the orb shrinks or vanishes right away, you had a contaminant on the lens. If nothing changes, you may be dealing with sensor dust or processing artifacts.

Test 3: Use manual focus and fixed exposure

Turn off autofocus (or lock focus) and set exposure to a consistent value. On many phones, you can tap-hold on the screen to lock AE/AF.

If orbs reduce, autofocus/exposure transitions were likely creating halos or bokeh artifacts.

Test 4: Shoot the same scene at different apertures/shutter speeds

If you have a camera with manual controls, repeat the shot at a wider aperture (e.g., f/1.8) and a narrower one (e.g., f/8). For video, try a different shutter speed or frame rate when possible.

If orb size changes drastically, it’s probably optical bloom/bokeh or flare. If it stays identical in the same pixel coordinates, it’s likely contamination on the sensor/lens.

Test 5: Turn off night mode/HDR/AI enhancements

Some modes intentionally brighten shadows and tame highlights, which can cause glowing circles around points of light.

If orbs disappear with these modes off, adjust the enhancement level rather than assuming the camera is malfunctioning.

Platform-specific troubleshooting (phone vs. camera)

Settings differ a lot by device. Use the steps below to isolate whether the artifact is coming from your camera’s optics or its computational image processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone and iPad

Try these on the same location under similar lighting to isolate the cause.

  1. Open Camera and switch off Night mode (tap the moon icon so it shows off).
  2. Temporarily disable HDR behavior if you see an HDR toggle in your camera mode (some models auto-manage it; note when you changed it).
  3. Turn Live Photo off to reduce additional processing, then retake one still image.
  4. Tap and hold on a bright light source to lock AE/AF (a yellow square/indicator confirms the lock on many iOS versions).
  5. Take a shot in a different angle and compare whether the orb shifts relative to the frame.
  6. If the orb stays fixed, compare with another app (e.g., use a different camera app) or export the original image before sharing.

Android phones

Android brands change labels, but the logic is consistent.

  1. Open Camera and switch to Photo (avoid Portrait, Night, and “Scene enhancement”).
  2. Turn off AI enhancement if you see a toggle (sometimes it’s under settings ⚙️).
  3. Lock focus/exposure by tapping and holding on the light area.
  4. Re-shoot after cleaning the lens with microfiber.
  5. Check the original capture vs. a shared copy (download from your messaging app or view in Gallery with “original” mode if available).
  6. If the issue is worst under LEDs, test with a different light source (incandescent or sunlight) and compare.

DSLR and mirrorless cameras

For interchangeable-lens cameras, you can quickly separate flare from sensor dust.

  1. Set aperture to f/8 (or similar) and shoot a bright, uniform background (sky or blank wall).
  2. Take the shot with the camera steady on a tripod, then repeat after a slight reframe.
  3. Clean the front element of the lens and retake the same composition.
  4. If the speck stays in the same sensor location, run sensor dust cleaning tools in-camera if available (many brands call it “Sensor cleaning” or “Clean image sensor”).
  5. For flare, hood the lens and repeat the shot with a different angle relative to the light source.

Post-processing: how to tell real artifacts from editing

Check whether the effect exists before you edit

Open the original file in your gallery/editor and confirm whether the orb is present at the source. If it appears only after applying filters, it’s not an optics issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for halos caused by sharpening and de-noise

Over-sharpening and aggressive de-noise can create circular halos around highlights. If you used a tool like Photoshop-like “clarity” or strong sharpening, try reverting to defaults.

Disable auto-enhancements and try a raw file

If your camera supports RAW, compare RAW vs. JPEG. If RAW looks clean but JPEG shows orbs, your in-camera processing is contributing.

Hardware checks: when it might be sensor or optics

Lens vs. sensor: a simple swap test

On cameras with interchangeable lenses, take one shot of a bright uniform background with Lens A. Without changing the framing too much, mount Lens B and shoot again.

  • If the artifact moves or changes: it’s likely on Lens A (or in front optics).
  • If the artifact stays in the same place: it’s likely on the sensor.

When to get professional cleaning

If the speck is on the sensor and you don’t have experience with sensor cleaning, professional service is the safer path. Sensor damage can be expensive, and it’s not worth the risk when the symptom is easy to confirm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also consider service if you suspect fungus on internal elements or if the orb appears even after lens cleaning and settings changes.

Common mistakes that make orbs appear worse

  • Dirty lens or fingerprints: even light smudges can bloom into bright circles.
  • Shooting into strong lights: streetlights and headlights are flare magnets.
  • Using heavy night mode/auto-enhancement: computational bloom can exaggerate small artifacts.
  • Over-processing: aggressive denoise/sharpen can manufacture halos that weren’t there.
  • Viewing compressed copies: messaging apps often recompress media and can distort noise into patterns.

FAQ

Are camera orbs ever caused by something paranormal?

It’s possible to see strange artifacts, but the vast majority of orb-like images come from lens flare, reflections, dust, focus/exposure behavior, or processing. A consistent hardware-or-physics explanation is usually verifiable with the quick tests above.

Why do my orbs show up only at night?

Night scenes contain bright point sources (streetlights, car headlights, LEDs). Those create bloom, flare, and lens contamination artifacts that aren’t obvious in daylight.

Why do the orbs stay in the exact same spot across photos?

That pattern strongly suggests a fixed contaminant—most commonly dust on the lens or sensor. The most effective verification is cleaning the lens and shooting against a bright uniform background, then checking whether the artifact moves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do videos show more orbs than photos?

Often yes. Video combines motion, shutter timing, and continuous processing. That mix can create pulsing highlights, trails, or frame-to-frame changes that look “orb-like.”

Can I permanently fix it with settings?

If the orb is from lens flare or autofocus/exposure behavior, settings help a lot. If the orb is from a speck on optics, no settings tweak will fully remove it—cleaning (and sometimes professional servicing) is the real fix.

Bottom Line

Orbs on camera are usually explainable: lens flare, reflections, dust, condensation, autofocus/exposure halos, or processing/compression artifacts. The fastest path to certainty is running angle/light tests, cleaning the lens, locking focus/exposure, and checking whether the artifact exists in the original capture.

If the orb stays fixed in the same pixel spot across many images, treat it like a hardware contamination problem and confirm whether it’s on the lens or sensor. Once you isolate the cause, the mystery stops being mysterious—and your photos look normal again.
