Spoilers for the 2015 game and its enhanced release follow. Until Dawn begins as a revenge story staged by Josh Washington, but the real danger on Blackwood Mountain is the Wendigo curse—and the original game has no single fixed ending. The choices you make decide which of the eight friends survive, while Josh’s fate remains tragic in either route. That matters ahead of the announced sequel: PlayStation has confirmed a 2027 PS5 release, but has not named a canonical lineup of survivors from the first game.
What is Until Dawn about?
Until Dawn follows eight friends who return to the Washington family’s Blackwood Mountain lodge one year after twins Hannah and Beth disappeared. Josh, their brother, invites the group back for a reunion. What begins as an uneasy gathering turns into a night of escalating danger, and the player’s choices shape the characters’ relationships and chances of making it through.

The group consists of Josh, Sam, Mike, Emily, Chris, Ashley, Matt and Jessica. Supermassive Games’ official description frames the game around those eight friends and the consequences of the player’s decisions. The central setup is straightforward; the reason it becomes so disturbing is the group’s connection to Hannah and Beth’s disappearance.
Why the prank matters
Before the twins vanished, their friends staged a cruel prank on Hannah. Jessica planned it, Emily’s relationship with Mike helped motivate it, Matt recorded it, and the group’s humiliation sent Hannah and Beth out into the snow. The incident is more than backstory: it is the moral wound the returning friends carry into the reunion, and Josh’s anger at the group grows from their role in what happened.

The opening mystery encourages players to see the night through that history: someone seems to be punishing the friends for the prank. But understanding the group’s guilt is not the same as explaining the danger. The story eventually reveals that a supernatural threat is also hunting them on the mountain.
What really happened to Hannah and Beth?
Beth dies after falling into the mine. Hannah survives the fall, but is trapped below the mountain with no way out and little hope of finding food. After thirty days, she digs up Beth’s body and eats it. The Makkapitew spirit and that act transform Hannah into a Wendigo.
This revelation reinterprets the disappearance at the start of the game. Hannah did not simply die in the fall, and Beth did not make it out. Hannah’s survival ends in a transformation that makes her a threat to the same friends who once humiliated her. The game’s horror turns on that awful connection: the group’s prank sets the tragedy in motion, but the monster is no longer Hannah in any ordinary human sense.
It also explains why the apparent slasher setup cannot account for everything. The “Psycho” is a human threat, but Wendigos are real, and the friends face creatures that cannot be treated as ordinary attackers. Once that distinction is clear, the central question shifts from who is staging the night’s scares to how anyone can survive the mountain’s supernatural danger.
Who is the killer in Until Dawn?
Josh is the apparent human villain: he stages fake deaths and psychological ordeals to punish the friends he blames for Hannah and Beth’s disappearance. But he is not the game’s only threat, and his elaborate revenge does not explain the Wendigos. The answer is therefore two-part: Josh is behind the human deception, while the creatures are the deeper danger.
Why does Josh do it?
Josh’s motives are conflicted rather than neatly vindictive. He wants revenge, but he also wants to force the friends together through shared trauma. His grief, self-loathing and unstable grasp on reality complicate those motives; his actions are harmful, even as the story presents him as someone devastated by his sisters’ loss.

The game uses Josh’s deception to make the player draw conclusions from incomplete information. Creative director Will Byles described the intended effect this way: “We wanted the decisions you make to be based on what you ‘think’ you know without being duplicitous with the player, as discovering a pertinent fact after the event that completely shifts your perspective has a very powerful effect.” The reveal of the Wendigos gives that design idea a concrete purpose: a player who thought the night was only a human revenge plot must reconsider what the characters are actually facing.
What Josh’s reveal does—and does not—change
Learning that Josh staged the fake scares explains the human side of the night, but it does not make the friends safe. The Wendigo threat is real, and the story moves from psychological punishment to survival. Josh’s role matters because it makes the group’s mistrust and fear harder to navigate; it does not turn the supernatural danger into another trick.
What happens to Josh at the end?
Josh does not escape the mines with the lodge survivors in the original game. His fate depends on whether he recognizes Hannah, but neither route gives him an ordinary rescue or a happy ending.
If Josh recognizes Hannah
If Josh says Hannah’s name when confronted by the Wendigo, she recognizes him. That recognition does not restore her humanity or make her safe. Instead, she pulls him farther into the mines. He eventually starves and begins to transform into a Wendigo.
If Josh does not recognize Hannah
If he fails to recognize her, Hannah kills him. The difference between the routes is whether Josh is killed immediately or taken deeper into the mines and left to transform; in both, he is separated from the survivors and left behind.
That outcome makes Josh both a perpetrator and a victim of the night. His revenge plan puts his friends through terror, but his own grief and decisions do not protect him from the supernatural threat. The game does not treat the recognition route as a cure or an escape: recognizing Hannah changes the shape of his fate, not its tragic direction.

How do the Wendigos change the finale?
Near dawn, the remaining characters are surrounded by Wendigos inside the lodge. Mike and Sam try to buy time for the others to get out, and the plan involves the lodge’s gas line and a broken light bulb to ignite the building. Whether characters escape depends on the player’s movement, hiding and final decisions.
Why does “Don’t Move” matter?
The Wendigos respond to movement, so staying still can keep a character alive. In the final sequence, “Don’t Move” is both a game mechanic and a survival principle: panic or a mistaken movement can be dangerous when the creatures are close. Patience and timing matter as much as the choices that brought the characters to the lodge.

The climax is not a conventional fight in which the player can simply overpower the creatures. Instead, the characters try to outlast the threat long enough to escape. Their survival depends on moment-to-moment actions as well as earlier decisions, so a player who has kept characters alive through most of the night still has to navigate the final sequence carefully.
How do Until Dawn’s endings work?
There is no one fixed ending in the original game. PlayStation describes “hundreds of variations” based on the fates of the eight playable characters. Treat that wording as the publisher’s description of a highly variable outcome, not as a precise count of separate finale files.
It is more useful to think of the ending as several connected outcomes than as one final scene with a single correct result:
- Who survives: Sam, Mike, Emily, Chris, Ashley, Matt and Jessica can have different fates depending on choices and actions. Josh has his own separate outcome in the mines.
- Josh’s route: Whether he recognizes Hannah determines whether she kills him or pulls him farther into the mines, where he eventually starves and transforms.
- Relationships: Choices alter trust, resentment, romance and willingness to help. Those relationships are part of the decision context, not a guarantee that any character is safe.
- What the player knows: Clues and totems can make the story’s events and threats clearer, including details about Hannah, Beth, the mines and the Wendigos.
- The final lodge decisions: Movement, hiding and the choices made during the escape sequence affect who gets out.
These elements mean that two players can reach the end of the same story with different survivors and different understandings of what happened. The game’s branching structure is the point: choices, quick-time actions, character relationships and the final escape all contribute to the outcome.

Which Until Dawn ending is canon?
No single first-game ending has been established as canon in the official material available for the announced sequel. PlayStation presents survival as variable and describes hundreds of ending variations, so it would be misleading to treat one all-survivor route—or one particular outcome for Josh—as the definitive version.
That distinction matters because players often look for a “correct” route before a sequel. A playthrough in which everyone survives is one possible outcome, not an officially confirmed baseline for what comes next. The same applies to any claim that a particular character must have died or survived. Until an official sequel announcement says otherwise, those claims remain speculation rather than confirmed story continuity.
What should I remember before Until Dawn 2?
PlayStation has announced Until Dawn 2 for PS5 in 2027, with Firesprite developing it. The official announcement confirms Dr Hill’s return and says relationships within the new crew will matter more than ever; major decisions and small character moments can trigger Butterfly Effect branches.
Those details establish the sequel’s platform, planned release window, developer and emphasis on branching relationships. They do not settle the first game’s outcome. The announcement does not identify a canonical survivor lineup, confirm whether Sam, Mike, Emily, Chris, Ashley, Matt or Jessica return, explain how the sequel would import or reconcile every possible first-game outcome, or reveal the full plot, setting or ending structure.

PlayStation describes the enhanced PS5 and PC edition as rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, with revised cinematography, re-cut narrative material, new collectibles and environments, and a third-person camera. Players comparing a scene’s framing or looking for a newly added collectible should identify whether they mean the original or the enhanced release. What is the clearest way to understand the story?
Keep the human and supernatural parts of the plot separate. Josh creates the fake scares to punish his friends, but he is not responsible for the Wendigos.
