Michael is not playable at the start of GTA 5 Story Mode. First complete Franklin’s opening missions, including “Complications.” That mission introduces Michael and opens the two-character progression. Play “Father/Son”, then continue the available Story Mode objectives until Michael’s missions appear.

After Michael is unlocked, open the protagonist-selection wheel, highlight Michael’s portrait, and release the switch control or confirm it according to your platform and custom bindings. Once you are controlling him, check the map for an M marker. If no M appears, finish the currently active objective, check for calls or messages, and confirm that you are in Story Mode rather than GTA Online.

What mission unlocks Michael in GTA 5 Story Mode?

Michael becomes playable after Franklin completes “Complications.” You cannot select him during the opening section before that mission. “Complications” is the point at which the game introduces Michael and changes the story from Franklin’s initial solo progression into a two-character structure.

“Father/Son” is the important follow-up in Michael’s introduction sequence. Completing it does not mean every Michael mission will appear immediately in a single fixed list. Instead, keep completing whichever Story Mode objective is currently available. The next Michael activity can be represented by an M on the map, a phone call, a message, or a prerequisite objective that must be completed first.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The practical rule is simple: finish “Complications,” play “Father/Son,” then follow the available mission prompts. If Michael is selectable but his map has no M, he is already unlocked; the game is waiting for another story condition rather than requiring a second unlock.

How do I unlock Michael step by step?

  1. Start Story Mode and play Franklin’s opening missions. The first section is deliberately limited to Franklin. Do not expect Michael’s portrait or missions before the introductory sequence reaches him.
  2. Complete “Complications.” This mission introduces Michael and unlocks the next stage of protagonist progression.
  3. Play “Father/Son.” Treat this as the key follow-up to Michael’s introduction. Let the mission finish fully so the game can register its completion.
  4. Continue the active Story Mode objectives. A mission for Franklin may be required before the next Michael activity becomes available. Follow the marker or objective the game currently provides rather than repeatedly searching for an M.
  5. Watch for Michael’s availability. A new M marker, a call, a text message, or a newly enabled objective can all signal that his next mission is ready.
  6. Switch to Michael and check the map. Select his portrait from the character wheel, then open the map and look for an M marker.

Mission availability is contextual. The game may unlock Michael as a protagonist while still asking you to complete another character’s objective first. That is normal progression, not a failed unlock.

How do I switch to Michael after unlocking him?

Use the protagonist-selection wheel while free-roaming in Story Mode. The exact keyboard key or controller button depends on your platform, edition, and any custom control bindings, so use the control assigned to character switching rather than relying on a universal key label.

  1. Make sure you are in Story Mode. The Story Mode protagonist wheel is separate from GTA Online’s player controls.
  2. Press and hold the character-switch control. This opens the wheel showing the protagonists currently available to you.
  3. Move the highlight to Michael’s portrait. Before “Complications,” his portrait is not available for selection. After the unlock, it can be selected when the mission state permits switching.
  4. Release the control or confirm the choice. Some control schemes switch when you release the button; others use a confirmation input.
  5. Wait for the transition to finish. Once the game places you in Michael’s scene, open the map and check for an M marker or the objective shown on screen.

If the wheel does not open, go to Settings > Controls and identify the current character-switch binding. A custom layout, a different platform, or a temporary mission restriction can make a familiar button appear not to work.

Where are Michael’s missions on the map?

Michael’s available Story Mode missions normally use an M map marker. Select Michael directly before checking, because the map and objective context can change with the protagonist you control.

An absent M does not always mean Michael is locked. The game can require another active mission to be completed first, trigger the next step through a phone call or message, or delay the marker until you leave the current mission area and the previous objective has fully registered.

Use this map-check routine

  1. Switch to Michael if the game permits it.
  2. Open the map and look for an M marker or a Michael-specific objective.
  3. Read the current objective text rather than relying only on marker color or position.
  4. If nothing appears, check the phone for unanswered calls and review newly received messages.
  5. Move away from any active mission circle, allow the preceding objective to complete, and reopen the map.
  6. If another character has an active marker, complete that mission before searching again.

Some missions begin from a call or message instead of an immediately visible M. Keep playing the active story objective until the game supplies the next prompt.

Why can’t I switch to Michael?

Most failed switches have one of three causes: Michael has not yet been unlocked, the current mission temporarily blocks switching, or the control binding is different from the one you expect. Work through the checks below in order.

Michael has not reached the unlock point

If you have not completed “Complications,” the selection wheel cannot offer Michael as a playable protagonist. Finish Franklin’s introductory missions and complete that mission before troubleshooting controls.

The current mission restricts switching

Some Story Mode missions require a designated character or hold the protagonist selection until a specific point or the mission ending. If the wheel is unavailable during an objective, follow the mission until the game restores free switching. Finishing the current mission is usually the correct fix; repeatedly pressing the switch control will not override the restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your control binding is different

Platform instructions often use different button or key names, and custom bindings can change them again. Open Settings > Controls, find the character-switch action, and use the displayed input. If the game recognizes other controls but not switching, compare the active layout with the default or remap the action.

You are in GTA Online

Michael is a Story Mode protagonist. GTA Online uses a different character system, so the Story Mode wheel and M markers are not available there. Return to Story Mode before applying these instructions.

What should I do if there is no M on the map?

First establish whether Michael is unlocked or whether the story is still before “Complications.” If you have completed “Complications” and “Father/Son,” the missing marker is usually a progression or trigger issue rather than a permanent lock.

Quick recovery checklist

  • Confirm that “Complications” is complete in Story Mode.
  • Confirm that “Father/Son” has also been completed.
  • Switch to Michael before opening the map.
  • Complete any Franklin or Trevor mission currently marked as active.
  • Check for unanswered phone calls and newly received messages.
  • Move away from an active mission area and reopen the map after the objective registers.
  • Finish the current mission if protagonist switching is temporarily disabled.
  • Verify that the session is Story Mode, not GTA Online.

Do these checks in sequence instead of abandoning the save immediately. A protagonist can be fully unlocked while the next mission remains hidden behind another character’s active objective or a call-based trigger.

Can Michael be unlocked without playing Franklin’s early missions?

No. Michael’s introduction is tied to Franklin’s early Story Mode progression. You must reach and complete “Complications” before Michael becomes available as a selectable protagonist.

There is no separate menu option that bypasses this story milestone in normal Story Mode progression. If you load a save from before the mission, continue Franklin’s objectives until the game introduces Michael.

What is the role of “Father/Son” in Michael’s introduction?

“Father/Son” follows “Complications” and is the key mission in the initial Michael sequence. Completing it advances the story beyond Michael’s introduction and helps establish the alternating-character structure used by later missions.

Do not treat the end of “Complications” as a guarantee that every Michael marker will appear at once. Play “Father/Son” to completion, then follow the next available objective. The game may ask for another mission, a call, or a message before displaying the next M.

How do mission markers, calls, and prerequisites work?

Story Mode does not expose every mission as a permanent list. A mission can become available because you reached a story milestone, finished a prerequisite, entered the correct protagonist context, or received a call or message.

Use the following decision process:

  1. An M is visible: switch to Michael if necessary and travel to the marker.
  2. No M, but another story marker is visible: complete that active objective; it may be the prerequisite for Michael’s next mission.
  3. No marker, but the story has just advanced: check the phone and messages, then move away from the last mission area.
  4. The wheel is unavailable: finish the current mission or reach the point at which switching is restored.
  5. Nothing changes: confirm the mission milestones and that you are in Story Mode, then revisit the map after the game has registered the preceding completion.

This approach avoids a common mistake: assuming that a missing M proves Michael is locked. The marker is only one way the game communicates an available objective.

Which character should I use when several objectives are available?

Choose the protagonist whose marker or objective is active. Use Michael for an M marker or a prompt that specifically names him; use Franklin or Trevor when their corresponding objective is active.

There is no permanent advantage to forcing Michael when the game is presenting another character’s mission. Switching for the sake of switching can leave the expected trigger unresolved. Mission availability and context matter more than a fixed preference for one protagonist.

What you see Best next action Why
Michael’s portrait is selectable and an M is on the map Select Michael and travel to the M The mission is available in his protagonist context
Michael is selectable but no M is visible Complete active objectives and check calls or messages The next mission may require a prerequisite or trigger
The character wheel is unavailable Continue or finish the current mission Switching can be restricted during designated mission sections
Michael’s portrait is absent Return to Franklin’s early progression and complete “Complications” Michael is not unlocked before that milestone
No Story Mode markers appear and you are using an online character Load or enter Story Mode Michael and the M marker belong to Story Mode

Do the controls differ by platform?

Yes. The action is the same—open the protagonist wheel and select Michael—but the keyboard key, controller button, release behavior, and confirmation step can vary by platform, edition, and custom layout.

Rather than memorizing a button from a different version, open Settings > Controls in your copy of the game. Locate the character-switch command and note whether your scheme expects a held input, a directional selection, or an additional confirmation. If you changed the layout, the in-game label is the authoritative reference for your save and platform.

Switch works in free roam but not during a mission Whether the mission has temporarily disabled protagonist changes

What if Michael is unlocked but the game will not let me select him?

Check whether you are currently inside a mission, cutscene, restricted area, or objective that requires one protagonist. The wheel may be available in free roam but disabled until a designated point or the mission’s end.

Follow the on-screen objective and finish the restricted section. Once the game returns control, try the wheel again. If switching remains unavailable outside a mission, verify the binding in Settings > Controls and confirm that you have not loaded an online session.

How can I tell whether the unlock registered?

The clearest signs are that Michael’s portrait appears in the protagonist wheel and that the game allows you to enter his free-roam view. After that, an M marker or Michael-specific objective confirms that a mission is currently available, but the marker may appear later than the unlock itself.

If you can select Michael but cannot see an M, do not replay “Complications” solely to force the unlock. Continue the active story sequence, check calls and messages, and complete any prerequisite objective first.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for Michael before “Complications.” The opening missions intentionally keep the game focused on Franklin.
  • Stopping after “Complications.” “Father/Son” is the next important part of Michael’s introduction.
  • Assuming every mission uses an M immediately. Calls, messages, and prerequisite objectives can deliver the next step.
  • Checking the map with the wrong protagonist selected. Switch to Michael before interpreting the map.
  • Trying to switch during a restricted mission segment. Finish the designated objective and try again afterward.
  • Using an online character while expecting Story Mode markers. Return to Story Mode.
  • Following a button guide from another control layout. Verify the current binding in Settings > Controls.

What is the shortest reliable route to Michael’s missions?

Play Franklin’s introduction, complete “Complications,” complete “Father/Son,” and then follow the next Story Mode objective until Michael’s activity is offered. At that point, use the character wheel to select Michael and look for the M marker. If the marker is missing, finish the active mission, check calls and messages, and revisit the map.

  1. Franklin’s opening missions
  2. “Complications”
  3. “Father/Son”
  4. Any required follow-up objective
  5. Select Michael from the wheel
  6. Travel to the M marker or respond to the mission trigger

This route reflects how the game’s progression is structured without assuming a single universal button label or promising that every mission appears at the same moment on every platform or save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you troubleshoot, verify these five facts

  1. You are playing Story Mode.
  2. Franklin’s early missions have been completed.
  3. “Complications” is complete.
  4. “Father/Son” is complete.
  5. You have checked the active objective, map, phone calls, and messages.

If all five are true, Michael is likely unlocked even if his next mission has not appeared yet. Continue the available story objective, allow the preceding mission to register, and check the map again from Michael’s perspective.

Can I switch to Michael at any point during a mission?

Not always. Story Mode missions can temporarily restrict protagonist switching until a designated point or the mission’s end. When that happens, the limitation is part of the mission state rather than evidence that Michael has been locked again.

Complete the required section, then use the wheel once normal free-roam control returns. If the restriction persists outside the mission, check the control binding and session type.

Does the absence of an M mean I missed Michael’s unlock?

No. An M is an indicator of an available Michael mission, not the only proof that Michael is playable. Michael can be selectable while the story is waiting for another character’s objective, a call, a message, or a prerequisite to complete.

Final checklist for playing as Michael

  • Complete “Complications” during Franklin’s opening progression.
  • Complete “Father/Son.”
  • Open the protagonist-selection wheel with the binding shown in Settings > Controls.
  • Highlight Michael’s portrait and release or confirm according to your layout.
  • Open the map while controlling Michael.
  • Follow the M marker, phone call, message, or prerequisite objective presented by the game.
  • If switching is blocked, finish the current mission segment.
  • If no marker appears, complete active objectives and check the phone before assuming anything is broken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I unlock Michael by starting a new Story Mode save at a later point?

A normal new save begins at the opening Franklin sequence, so you must reach the story milestone that introduces Michael. Loading an existing save that has already passed “Complications” is the practical way to resume with him available.

Will replaying “Complications” make a missing M marker appear?

Usually the missing marker reflects a pending prerequisite or trigger, not an undone unlock. Check the active character objective, phone calls, messages, and mission restrictions before replaying an earlier mission.

Why does Michael disappear from the wheel during a mission?

Certain mission sections deliberately limit protagonist switching. Continue to the designated transition or complete the mission, then check the wheel again in free roam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Michael’s missions start from a phone call instead of an M?

Yes. A call or message can provide the next story trigger, so inspect the phone when the map has no M. The game may also require another character’s objective before that trigger arrives.

What should I check first if the character-switch input does nothing?

Confirm that you are in Story Mode, then open Settings > Controls and verify the current character-switch binding. If the input is correct, determine whether the current mission temporarily blocks switching.
