To turn off AI file name suggestions in macOS 27, open Finder, choose Finder > Settings, select General, and switch off Suggest filenames. Apple describes this as the Finder control for Apple Intelligence-powered suggestions that can appear while you rename, save, or edit files. Apple’s file-renaming guide uses the capitalization Suggest File Names; both labels refer to the same preference.
How do I turn off AI file name suggestions in macOS 27?
The filename-specific switch is in Finder’s own settings, not in the general Apple Intelligence controls. Follow this path:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open Finder from the Dock or Applications folder.
- In the macOS menu bar, choose Finder > Settings.
- Open the General section if it is not already selected.
- Find Suggest filenames and turn the switch off.
After you disable that preference, Finder’s filename-suggestion feature is switched off. Apple’s documentation describes the same control as Suggest File Names, with title-case capitalization, so do not assume you are looking at a different feature if the wording differs slightly between screens or support pages.
Where is the “Suggest File Names” option located?
Apple places the control in Finder’s General settings. It is not a toggle in System Settings’ Apple Intelligence page, Siri settings, or an individual document editor.

The exact menu path
Use the active application menu at the top of the screen: Finder > Settings > General. The first “Finder” is the application menu, while “Settings” opens Finder’s preferences window. The option is listed with other Finder behavior controls in that window.
Why Apple uses two versions of the label
Apple’s Finder settings documentation calls the option Suggest filenames, while its guide to renaming files refers to Suggest File Names. Capitalization is different, but the setting serves the same purpose: controlling Finder’s suggestions for names of files and documents.

When does Finder show these AI filename suggestions?
Apple says Finder can suggest names when you are renaming, saving, or editing files. Its file-renaming guidance also describes suggestions when creating or renaming documents.
- Renaming: the suggestion can appear as you give an existing file a new name.
- Saving: Finder may offer a proposed name during a save workflow.
- Editing: a file-related edit can trigger the filename suggestion feature.
- Creating documents: Apple’s renaming guide includes newly created documents among the situations in which Finder can suggest a name.
The setting controls the suggestion feature itself. It does not require you to change every application’s AI settings just to stop Finder from proposing names.

Do I need to disable Apple Intelligence everywhere?
No. Turning off Suggest filenames is a Finder-level change. Apple documents broader Apple Intelligence switches separately for features such as Siri AI, Messages summaries, Mail summaries, and notification summaries; those controls have a wider scope and are not required for this Finder-specific task.
| Control | Where you change it | What it affects | Needed to stop Finder filename suggestions? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggest filenames (also shown as Suggest File Names) | Finder > Settings > General | Finder’s AI-powered filename suggestions during file creation, saving, editing, or renaming | Yes |
| Apple Intelligence controls for Siri, summaries, and related features | Apple’s separate Apple Intelligence settings | Broader AI features in supported system and Apple apps | No |
Using the narrower Finder preference avoids changing unrelated Apple Intelligence features. If you still want summaries or Siri-related features, you can leave their controls enabled while disabling only filename suggestions.

Apple does not state that the option appears on every Mac in every configuration. Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 is not available in all languages or regions, and usage limits may apply. A missing option can therefore reflect feature availability rather than a mistake in the menu path.
Check the feature’s availability
- Confirm that the Mac is running macOS 27, the version covered by these instructions.
- Check whether Apple Intelligence is supported for the Mac’s language and region. Apple lists language and regional availability as limitations.
- Consider usage limits. Apple notes that limits may apply, so availability can vary even where the feature is supported.
If your language or region is not supported, Finder may not display the filename-suggestion control at all. Do not infer that every macOS 27 installation must have the switch.

Check that Finder is the active app
The menu-bar item must read Finder before you choose Settings. If another application is active, its own menu and preferences appear instead, and you will not see Finder’s General controls.
Allow for wording changes
Look for both Suggest filenames and Suggest File Names. Apple can change capitalization or wording in later macOS updates while retaining the same function. The location—Finder’s settings, under General—is the more reliable clue.
How can I verify that the Finder preference is off?
Verification is simple: reopen Finder > Settings > General and confirm that the Suggest filenames switch is in the off position. You can then perform the file operation that previously produced a suggestion—such as opening a rename or save workflow—and observe whether Finder still presents its filename proposal.
This check tests the Finder preference without changing system-wide Apple Intelligence settings. If a different application continues to show its own AI naming assistance, that behavior is outside the Finder control described here and may have a separate setting.

What exactly is being disabled?
The switch disables Finder’s filename-suggestion capability. Apple describes the suggestions as Apple Intelligence-powered and ties them to file naming actions. The preference is therefore about proposed names, not about turning off every intelligent feature in macOS.
- It targets Finder’s suggested names for files and documents.
- It is relevant during creation, saving, editing, and renaming workflows documented by Apple.
- It is separate from controls for Siri AI, Mail summaries, Messages summaries, notification summaries, and other Apple Intelligence features.
Because Apple’s documentation does not describe this toggle as a global Apple Intelligence shutdown, treat it as a focused preference. Use the broader controls only when you intend to change those other features as well.
Can a future macOS update change this procedure?
Yes. Interface labels and the placement of settings can change in later macOS releases. These instructions apply to macOS 27 and use the labels Apple documents for that version. If a later update moves the control, search Finder’s Settings window for the filename-suggestion wording rather than assuming the system-wide Apple Intelligence page controls it.
Apple’s support pages reviewed for this procedure do not show publication dates in their search results, so the safest way to handle a changed interface is to compare the wording and scope of the control: it should clearly refer to suggested file names in Finder.

What are the practical limits of this setting?
The preference only applies where Finder’s filename-suggestion feature is available. Apple states that Apple Intelligence availability varies by language and region and that usage limits may apply. Consequently, two Macs running macOS 27 may not expose identical AI-related controls.
The setting also should not be used as evidence that all AI features are disabled. Apple documents separate controls for broader services, and those remain governed by their own settings. If your goal is to remove summaries, Siri AI behavior, or other system features, use Apple’s dedicated Apple Intelligence controls instead of relying on the Finder switch.

- Finder menu is not visible: click a Finder window or the Finder icon so Finder is the active application.
- Settings opens but the switch is not listed: verify macOS 27, then check Apple Intelligence language and regional availability.
- The wording looks different: look for the equivalent labels Suggest filenames or Suggest File Names.
- You want to keep other AI features: change only the Finder preference; broader Apple Intelligence controls are separate.
- You want to disable all Apple Intelligence features: use Apple’s separate system-level controls, not just the Finder setting.
These checks address the documented reasons the control may differ without assuming that every Mac has the same feature set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Finder’s filename suggestions disable Siri or Mail summaries?
No. Apple documents those as separate Apple Intelligence controls. The Finder preference is limited to suggested file names, so other features keep their existing settings.
Why does Apple’s guide say “Suggest File Names” while Finder says “Suggest filenames”?
The capitalization differs between Apple support pages and the Finder interface. Both labels describe the Finder preference for AI-generated file-name proposals.
Is the filename-suggestion switch available in every country and language?
Not necessarily. Apple says Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 is unavailable in some languages and regions, and usage limits may apply, so the control may not appear on every installation.
Where should I look after a macOS update if the switch moves?
Start in Finder’s Settings window and inspect the General section for wording that refers to suggested file names. Apple may adjust capitalization or placement without changing the feature’s scope.
