Start in Google Analytics 4 at Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Set the primary dimension to Session source / medium, then search for chatgpt, claude, gemini and perplexity. Add Landing page, engaged sessions, key events and revenue to see which AI assistants send useful visitors. GA4 can also classify recognized assistant referrals in its newer AI Assistant default channel, whose medium is exactly ai-assistant.
That report measures attributed sessions that reached your site and loaded the GA4 tag; it is not a census of every person influenced by an AI answer. Missing referrers or campaign data can make visits appear as Referral, Direct or another channel. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are a separate Search Console measurement problem, not part of GA4’s AI Assistant channel.

GA4 builds acquisition dimensions from the information that arrives with a page request. It can use campaign fields, UTM parameters and the document referrer, then map those values into dimensions such as Session source, Session medium, Session source / medium and campaign. The label you see depends on which fields survived the click and any redirects before the landing page loaded.
For example, a ChatGPT link may include a campaign parameter, while another assistant may send a referrer without a campaign. Two visits that feel identical to a visitor can therefore receive different labels in GA4. The practical consequence is to inspect the raw-looking source and medium dimensions before relying on a high-level channel total.

The three dimensions to inspect first
| Dimension | What it tells you | Why it matters for AI referrals |
|---|---|---|
| Session source | The source value assigned to the session | Helps identify an assistant or its referring domain when no custom channel has been applied. |
| Session medium | The medium assigned to the session | Shows whether GA4 used a referral, the special ai-assistant medium or another value. |
| Session source / medium | The combined diagnostic label | Fastest way to search for individual assistant names and compare their traffic. |
| Campaign | The campaign value associated with the session | Useful when a UTM campaign or Google’s AI Assistant classification supplies one. |
These are session-scoped dimensions. A person can return later through another source, so do not treat one session’s source as a permanent user identity.
How do I see ChatGPT traffic in GA4?
Use the Traffic acquisition report, search the source fields for ChatGPT-related values, and then validate the resulting landing pages and outcomes. This workflow works even when your property has not yet created a custom AI channel.
- Open the report. In GA4, go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Choose a diagnostic dimension. Select Session source / medium. If the interface is already using another dimension, open the dimension selector and switch it.
- Search the table. Search for
chatgpt. Also trychatgpt.com, because OpenAI documents that ChatGPT referral URLs automatically includeutm_source=chatgpt.com. - Add useful columns. Include Landing page, Sessions, Engaged sessions, key events and Revenue. These show whether the visits reached relevant content and produced a business outcome.
- Check campaign values. Add Session campaign or the campaign dimension to determine whether the UTM value survived redirects and was accepted by GA4.
- Set and record the date range. Save the date range and property name with your report export so later comparisons use the same period.
Do not remove or overwrite utm_source=chatgpt.com in a redirect. Test a real link and inspect the resulting Session source, medium and campaign rows after GA4 has processed the visit. Processing and reporting latency can mean a test does not appear instantly.
How do I track Claude, Gemini and Perplexity clicks?
Repeat the same source/medium search for each assistant, then compare the resulting landing pages and outcomes in one exploration or report. Do not assume that every assistant uses the same hostname, referrer policy or campaign convention.
Claude
Search Session source / medium for claude and review the referrer or source string that your property actually receives. If the row is absent, inspect Referral and Direct totals for the same landing pages and date range before concluding that Claude sent no traffic.
Gemini
Search for gemini, then check whether Google has classified the session with medium ai-assistant. Google’s default channel description includes Gemini, but individual rows can still vary when attribution fields are missing or changed by a redirect.
Perplexity
Search for perplexity in Session source / medium and add Landing page and key-event metrics. A source row is more actionable when you can see the pages visitors reached and whether they engaged, subscribed or generated revenue.

Compare assistants without hiding the baseline
Use the same date range, landing-page scope and conversion definitions for every assistant. Include Referral, Organic Search and Direct as comparison rows. This prevents an AI source from looking impressive merely because it is being compared with a smaller or differently defined segment.
| Comparison axis | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Sessions | How many attributed visits arrived? |
| Engaged sessions | Did visitors meet GA4’s engagement criteria? |
| Engagement rate | What share of sessions engaged, under the selected GA4 definition? |
| Landing page | Which pages receive assistant clicks? |
| Key events | Which assistant sessions complete tracked actions? |
| Revenue | What recorded revenue is associated with those sessions? |
There is no authoritative cross-site conversion or traffic-percentage benchmark for these assistants in the official material available here. Use your own property’s date-stamped data rather than presenting a general industry percentage.
What is GA4’s AI Assistant channel and when should I use it?
GA4 now includes an AI Assistant default channel for recognized assistant referrals. Google defines it as the channel through which users arrive from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok. The rule uses medium exactly ai-assistant; when Google recognizes the referrer, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and the campaign to (ai-assistant).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle’s release note dates this capability to May 13, 2026. That date matters when comparing historical reports: data collected before the feature was available may not have the same channel classification as later data, even if the underlying visits were similar.
- Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Change the primary dimension to Session default channel group.
- Look for the row named AI Assistant.
- Open or drill into the row with source, medium and landing-page dimensions to identify individual assistants.
The built-in channel is convenient for current reporting, but it does not replace source/medium diagnostics. A visit that lacks the signals needed for recognition can still be placed elsewhere.
How do I create a custom AI-assistant channel group?
Create a custom channel when you need a stable, auditable grouping across older data, property-specific sources or assistants that the default rules do not classify consistently. Put the custom channel above Referrals so its rule is evaluated first.
- Go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups.
- Create a new channel group, or edit the group used for your reporting view.
- Add a channel named AI assistants.
- Set the rule to match Session source with a regular expression.
- Place the new channel above Referrals.
- Save, then review the resulting rows against the ungrouped Session source / medium report.
Google’s example names ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Perplexity. A practical starting expression from that guidance is:

^.*ai|.*.openai.*|.*chatgpt.*|.*gemini.*|.*gpt.*|.*copilot.*|.*perplexity.*|.*google.*bard.*|.*bard.*google.*|.*bard.*|.*.*gemini.*google.*$
Treat this as a starting point, not a universal allowlist. Review your own source rows first. Broad alternatives such as .*gpt.* or .*bard.* can catch unrelated names, and a source string that contains “ai” may not be an assistant at all. Tighten the expression to the exact values you observe, test it on a historical date range and document the rule version.
Why ordering above Referrals changes the result
GA4 evaluates channel rules in order. If a generic Referral rule matches first, an assistant source can be counted as Referral and never reach your AI rule. Moving the custom channel above Referrals gives the more specific classification a chance to win.
Why is my AI traffic showing as Direct or Referral?
The usual reason is missing or unusable attribution data. GA4 defines Direct as traffic for which no referral-source information is available; an assistant click can end up there when the referrer and campaign fields are absent, stripped or blocked before the GA4 tag runs.
Common causes of a Referral row
- The assistant sends a recognizable referrer, but GA4 has not mapped it to the AI Assistant channel.
- Your custom channel does not include the source spelling or hostname that arrived.
- The custom channel is below Referrals in the channel-group order.
- A redirect changes the source string or removes campaign parameters.
Common causes of a Direct row
- The browser or app omits the document referrer.
- A privacy setting, link-opening flow or intermediary strips attribution data.
- The user copies a URL from an assistant and opens it later, without the original referrer.
- The page fails to execute the GA4 tag, so no session is recorded with usable attribution.
A diagnostic sequence
- Compare the same landing pages in Session source / medium, Referral and Direct.
- Inspect the actual destination URL in a controlled test, including every UTM parameter.
- Follow each redirect and confirm that
utm_source,utm_mediumandutm_campaignare retained when they are present. - Confirm the GA4 tag fires on the final page and that consent settings do not prevent measurement.
- Review the raw source values and adjust the custom regex only after seeing the values GA4 received.
Even after these checks, the visible total remains attributed traffic, not every visit influenced by an AI assistant. People can read an answer, remember a domain and type it directly later; GA4 cannot reliably connect that behavior to the earlier exposure.

Not through the GA4 AI Assistant channel. Google explicitly excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode from that channel. Measure those Google Search surfaces in Search Console’s Generative AI performance report instead.
Search Console’s report provides impressions by page, country, device and date for the covered generative-search surfaces. Its methodology says that clicks on links in AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Search clicks. That means a user may click an AI Overview link and arrive as Organic Search in GA4 rather than AI Assistant.
| Product | Primary question | What to use it for |
|---|---|---|
| GA4 | What happened after a person reached my site? | Sessions, landing pages, engagement, key events and revenue. |
| Search Console Generative AI performance report | How visible were my pages in Google’s generative-search surfaces? | Impressions and clicks by page, country, device and date. |
Use both reports, but do not add their totals together. They have different scopes, identities and attribution methods.

How should I build a reliable AI-referral report?
Start with a transparent report design that preserves the raw dimensions and records the channel definition used for each analysis. This makes changes in GA4 classification easier to explain.
Recommended Free Tools
Recommended report columns
- Session source / medium
- Session default channel group
- Landing page
- Sessions and engaged sessions
- Engagement rate
- Key events and key-event rate
- Revenue, where ecommerce or revenue events are configured
- Session campaign
Recommended comparison process
- Choose a fixed date range and record it in the report title or notes.
- Export the ungrouped source/medium rows before applying a custom channel.
- Apply the AI Assistant default channel and note the GA4 property’s current rule set.
- Apply your custom channel group only when you need its broader or historically consistent definition.
- Compare each assistant with Referral, Organic Search and Direct using identical metrics.
- Annotate major tagging, redirect, consent or channel-rule changes so a later trend is not mistaken for audience growth.
For operational decisions, prioritize landing pages and key events over raw session volume. A small source can matter if it consistently reaches high-intent pages; a large source can be less useful if most sessions are unengaged or fail to execute measurement.
What implementation pitfalls should I avoid?
Counting only the AI Assistant row
The default channel is a useful recognized subset, not a complete census. Always inspect source/medium and the Referral and Direct rows for the same period.
Assuming a source name proves an assistant visit
Names can be ambiguous, and broad regular expressions can capture unrelated sites. Validate each source against actual destination URLs and keep the regex as narrow as your evidence allows.
Comparing channel definitions across dates
The AI Assistant channel became available on May 13, 2026. A pre-release period and a later period may classify similar traffic differently, so state which channel group and date range produced every comparison.

What should a finished tracking setup let me answer?
A sound setup should answer these questions without manual guesswork:
- Which assistant source values actually appear in this GA4 property?
- How many sessions and engaged sessions did each source generate during a stated period?
- Which landing pages receive those visits?
- Which key events and revenue are associated with each assistant?
- How much traffic is recognized as AI Assistant versus left in Referral or Direct?
- Did a redirect, consent change, tagging change or channel-rule edit alter the classification?
- Are Google AI Overview and AI Mode visibility being monitored separately in Search Console?
If you can answer all seven and preserve the underlying source/medium rows, your report is robust enough for editorial, SEO and acquisition decisions without pretending that GA4 can observe every AI-influenced visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for an AI referral test to appear in GA4?
GA4 processing is not always immediate, so a live test may be absent from standard reports for a while. Use realtime or debugging tools for tag verification, then confirm the final classification after normal processing and keep the test date documented.
Can I identify the exact ChatGPT conversation that sent a visitor?
Usually not. GA4 receives attribution fields such as source, medium, campaign and referrer, not the private conversation text or a stable conversation identifier.
Should AI assistant traffic be excluded from referral spam filters?
Do not exclude a source merely because its name contains an assistant brand. First verify that it is a real user source, then keep bot and unwanted-referral exclusions separate from your AI channel definition.
What if my GA4 property uses a custom attribution model?
The acquisition dimensions still describe how the session was classified, while attribution reports can assign key-event credit differently. Use source/medium for diagnosis and your chosen attribution report for credit allocation.
