The community-made Rome II CPU Performance Fix is a drop-in dinput8.dll that targets several CPU bottlenecks in Total War: Rome II. In the author’s 2026 CapFrameX comparison, campaign-map average performance rose from 100.5 to 120.5 FPS and big-battle 0.1% lows from 57.9 to 77.0 FPS on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D with a GeForce RTX 5090 at 4K with V-Sync disabled. Those gains came from one high-end system, so they are useful evidence rather than a guarantee for every PC.
The patch does not replace game archives or saves. It supports the standard Steam build and the pantheon beta, requires SSE4.1, and can be removed by deleting its DLL. Workshop users must also run the supplied installer and uninstaller scripts; unsubscribing alone does not remove the installed file.

What does the Rome II CPU Performance Fix change?
The fix is a community DLL by JGdaCaesar. It intercepts selected routines at launch instead of modifying Rome II’s game files or save data. The project checks expected bytes for the detected build and disables its patches when the executable does not match a known version.
Texture-streaming tile scans
When neighboring pixels request the same texture tile, the original routine examines requests pixel by pixel. The patch counts consecutive runs, which the author describes as roughly 12–17 times less work for that operation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Legacy floating-point conversions
About 1,200 x87 float-to-integer conversions are replaced with newer instructions. The author says the original conversions consumed about 10% of the campaign-map main thread in the measured case.
Render-list sorting
Two draw-list sorts are replaced with routines described as about 11 times faster while preserving the original ordering.

How much faster is Rome II with the mod?
The following figures are JGdaCaesar’s 2026 CapFrameX measurements, taken with the same save and battle on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and GeForce RTX 5090 at 4K with V-Sync off. They are not independent tests across multiple processors or graphics cards.
| Scenario | Vanilla | With fix | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign-map average FPS | 100.5 FPS | 120.5 FPS | +20% |
| Big-battle average FPS | 118.4 FPS | 140.4 FPS | +19% |
| Big-battle 1% low | 71.8 FPS | 92.5 FPS | +29% |
| Big-battle 0.1% low | 57.9 FPS | 77.0 FPS | +33% |
The larger 1% and 0.1% improvements indicate fewer severe stalls in that run, not merely a higher peak frame rate. A different CPU, game build, resolution, mod list, or bottleneck can produce a smaller change. Systems limited by the GPU have less unused CPU capacity for this patch to exploit; CPU-limited systems are the more plausible beneficiaries.
Does it improve loading times?
JGdaCaesar also recorded shorter loads on the same test PC, but these are stopwatch results rather than a universal promise.

| Load case | Earlier version | Version 1.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Divide et Impera save with 13 Workshop mods | 38 seconds (version 1.0) | 20 seconds |
| First load of a normal mod list after starting the game | 18 seconds | 9 seconds |
Storage speed, save size, CPU model and the number of loose files can change these times substantially.
How do I install the fix?
Choose one installation route. The DLL is not a conventional .pack mod and will not appear in Rome II’s launcher mod list.
Nexus package
- Download the package and extract
dinput8.dll. - Copy the DLL into the folder containing
Rome2.exe. - Start the game normally.
- Open
rome2fix.logafter launch to confirm what build and patches were detected.
Workshop package
- Subscribe to the Workshop item and wait for Steam to download it.
- Open the Workshop content folder for the item.
- Run
install.batonce. - Launch Rome II and check
rome2fix.log. - When removing it, run
uninstall.batbefore unsubscribing. Unsubscribing by itself leaves the installed DLL behind.
What hardware and game versions are supported?
- Instruction set: SSE4.1 is required; the author describes this as approximately 2008-era CPUs or newer.
- Steam builds: The current Workshop description lists support for the normal Steam release and the pantheon beta.
- Other mods: Ordinary
.packand UI mods can run alongside it, including a large overhaul list the author reports testing. - DLL conflicts: Only one
dinput8.dllreplacement can load. Another mod using that filename must be removed or otherwise resolved. - DXVK: The author reports slower results when DXVK was combined with this fix, so that combination is not recommended.
The project documents per-build hashes, reproducible DLL builds and tests that compare replacement routines with the game’s original behavior. If an update changes expected bytes, the safety check is designed to leave the patch inactive rather than apply it to an unknown executable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
What should I do if performance does not change?
- Confirm that
dinput8.dllis besideRome2.exe, not only inside the Workshop download directory. - Read
rome2fix.logfor the detected build and any disabled patch message. - Check whether another tool already supplies a
dinput8.dll; two replacements cannot load together. - Compare CPU and GPU utilization during a battle. A graphics-card-limited run leaves less CPU headroom for this fix to improve.
- If Rome II has just updated, wait for a compatible build of the fix rather than forcing the DLL onto an unknown executable.
How do I remove it safely?
For a manually installed package, close the game and delete dinput8.dll from the folder containing Rome2.exe. For the Workshop route, run uninstall.bat first, verify the DLL is gone, and then unsubscribe. No game archives or save files need to be restored.
Is the 20% figure a guarantee?
No. The headline percentages are one author’s measurements on a particularly fast 2026 test platform, at 4K and with one save and battle. They establish that the patch can remove meaningful CPU overhead, especially in frame-time lows, but they do not predict an identical result for every Rome II installation.

Can I use the fix with a large overhaul or UI mod?
Yes, the author reports running it alongside ordinary .pack and UI modifications, including a large overhaul list. The important exception is another add-on that also depends on dinput8.dll, because Windows cannot load both replacements under the same name.

What happens after a Rome II or beta update?
The DLL performs a build check and is intended to disable itself when expected executable bytes do not match. Read rome2fix.log after updating; an inactive patch means you should obtain a build explicitly supporting that game version rather than forcing it.
Do I need a Ryzen 9 9950X3D to benefit?
No. That processor is only the author’s benchmark platform. The likely benefit depends on whether your own system is CPU-limited, while a GPU-limited system may show little change regardless of processor brand.
Why are 0.1% lows more important than average FPS in Rome II?
Average FPS describes the overall rate, but 0.1% lows expose the briefest and most severe frame-time spikes. Improving that metric can make camera movement and large engagements feel steadier even when the average increase is modest.
