Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream gives you four ways to add an island resident: answer the Get Help questionnaire, build one From Scratch, copy a face from a Mii saved on your Switch or Switch 2, or clone an existing islander. The island holds up to 70 Miis, and the editor is substantially more flexible than the 3DS version, with face paint, separate bangs and back hair, two-tone hair, adjustable ears, custom skin and eye colours, and male, female or non-binary identity options. Use Get Help for speed; choose From Scratch when likeness, anime styling, an animal or an alien matters. This guide covers creation, editing, imports, identity settings, face paint, deletion and population limits.
What do I need before creating a Mii?
You need Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. The same software runs on both systems; there is no separate Switch 2 edition. Nintendo lists a 6.3 GB download for each console. A new island can be populated immediately, while the free eShop demo lets you create up to three Miis and carries those creations into the full game. Each console user has a separate island save, so profiles do not share one island.

The island limit is 70 registered Miis at one time, down from the 100-character limit in the 3DS game. A house can hold up to eight Miis, which lets you group relatives or other connected residents without using extra buildings.
Which creation method should I use?
Get Help is the quickest route, while From Scratch exposes the complete editor. The other two options reuse a face you already made.

| Path | How it works | Best for | What you still set in the game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Get Help | Answer questions about hair, face, eyes and mouth; the game generates a face. | Fast first drafts or anyone who dislikes detailed Mii editing. | Identity, name, body, voice, personality, relationships and outfits. |
| From Scratch | Open every appearance control, then add optional face paint. | Accurate likenesses, original characters, anime designs, animals and aliens. | All profile and behaviour settings. |
| Create from Mii on console | Copies the face of a Mii stored in the console’s System Settings. | A face you already made, received locally or copied from an amiibo. | Height, personality, identity, voice and the remaining island profile. |
| Use an existing island Mii | Starts a new resident with a face already on your island. | Fast family resemblance or alternate versions of a character. | Any details you want to change before adding the resident. |
On the first island setup, the game presents Get Help and From Scratch directly. Later, open Add a Mii from the residents menu and follow the button prompt shown by your version; published guides report either X or + for opening that menu. The option can be unavailable during a story event or when the island already has 70 residents.
How do I create a Mii in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?
- Open Add a Mii. Use the residents menu and select the on-screen command for adding a resident. If you are starting a new island, choose one of the two headline modes immediately.
- Choose the source. Select Get Help, From Scratch, Create from Mii on console, or the command for basing the face on an existing islander.
- Complete Get Help, if selected. Answer the simple appearance questions. When the generated face appears, choose Looks good to continue, Needs work to enter the full editor, or Start over to generate another result.
- Build or refine the face. Set the face shape, skin, hair, ears, eyes, brows, nose, mouth, glasses, facial hair and small facial details. Face paint is an optional final layer.
- Set body proportions. Adjust height and body type with the sliders. The creation screen lets you compare the result with islanders already registered. There is no reset control for these sliders, so move them deliberately.
- Enter the name and pronunciation. Living the Dream uses one name field rather than the 3DS first-name, last-name and nickname split. If text-to-speech says the name incorrectly, open the pronunciation icon beside the name and spell the sound phonetically; a spelling such as “Shawn” can guide the voice for “Seán.”
- Choose gender and dating preferences. The available gender choices are male, female and non-binary. Dating preference can include male, female and/or non-binary, including selecting none. Set it explicitly instead of relying on the default, which Game8 reports as the opposite gender when the field is skipped.
- Set birthday, age and aging. Choose the birthday and current age, then decide whether the Mii should age. The game treats ages below 18 as Child/Kid and ages 18 or older as Grown-up/Adult.
- Create the voice. Pick a preset or use custom controls. The custom voice exposes speed, pitch, depth, rise and fall, and melody; Nintendo also describes pitch, speed and tone adjustments.
- Define family and other relationships. If other islanders exist, assign relatives and, where appropriate, a spouse or looser connection. Related Miis are prevented from falling in love, which helps keep a real-world family tree from producing accidental romances.
- Set personality sliders. Rate Movement, Speech, Energy, Thinking and Overall, ranging from normal to quirky. The game converts those ratings into one of 16 personality types after confirmation. Review the sliders carefully because the resulting type screen does not provide a return path to change them in that same step.
- Pick event clothing and add the resident. Choose the outfit style for special events such as a wedding, review the summary, and select Add Mii. New residents also receive a starter outfit tied to personality; additional clothing comes from the Where & Wear shop or from gifts.
What appearance options are new or expanded?
The editor keeps familiar Mii construction but adds enough control for detailed likenesses and deliberately non-human designs. Nintendo developer Daisuke Kageyama says eyelashes, eyelid creases and mouth angles can be fine-tuned, while hair sub-colours allow two-tone styles. Director Ryutaro Takahashi says the expanded colour and shape controls are intended for original characters as well as people from real life.
- Face and skin: A fan-maintained catalog counts 16 face shapes and 14 standard skin tones, plus a custom colour picker. Treat those counts as a community inventory rather than a first-party total; Nintendo has not published a numbered list of every part.
- Hair: Bangs and back hair are selected separately, with highlights, unusual colours and a second sub-colour for two-tone hair. Tied hair can be worn loose. Caps and beanies brought from the system Mii Maker are converted into inventory headwear; their system-hair equivalents are not available as in-game hairstyles.
- Eyes: New shapes, adjustable eyelashes, movable catchlights, eye bags, eyeshadow and unusual iris colours support realistic or stylised faces.
- Nose and mouth: Community catalogs identify at least eight additional nose shapes and at least 16 additional mouth shapes. A nose or mouth can be removed; lipstick can be applied even to a lipless mouth, and the mouth can be rotated.
- Glasses: Frames include new styles such as monocles. Frame and lens colours can be chosen separately, with thick and thin frame treatments.
- Ears: This series adds Oval, Round, Large and Pointy ears, with independent size and position controls.
- Body: Height and weight/body-type sliders remain available, but they do not have a one-button reset.
How do I use face paint?
Choose face paint after the native facial parts are in place, then draw or stamp on the face. It can sit above or below features, making whiskers, scars, masks, markings and other graphic details possible. Nintendo developers demonstrated whiskers on a cat-like Mii.
Face paint is a two-dimensional layer rather than geometry attached to the head. It may look correctly placed from the front but drift or appear flat when the Mii turns sideways. Native freckles, wrinkles, eyeliner, eye shines and makeup sit on the three-dimensional head and generally follow the face more naturally. For clean custom marks, community tutorials recommend smoothing broad strokes and using a one-pixel unsmoothed eraser for edge cleanup; that is a technique tip, not a separate game setting.
Use touch controls or the sticks to draw. Joy-Con 2 mouse control is not supported for face-paint work.

How do gender, dating preferences and pronouns work?
Gender and dating preference are independent fields. Choose male, female or non-binary for gender, then allow attraction to male, female, non-binary, several of those choices or none. Nintendo’s FAQ states that the game system and story content do not change because of a Mii’s gender selection.
Nintendo also confirms that married couples may have babies regardless of gender. Babies inherit characteristics from their parents; developer Ohnishi specifically notes that inherited traits can include cat-like face paint. Secondary guides describe personal pronouns as a separate setting, but Nintendo’s FAQ does not document custom pronoun strings. If your version displays a pronoun field, treat it as independent from gender; do not assume that free-form pronouns are supported unless the game labels them.
How does personality affect a resident?
The five creation sliders produce one of 16 personality types. Personality influences which Miis a resident gravitates toward and how that resident behaves during problems. English names published by different guides do not agree, so use the type name shown by your game rather than relying on an online chart.
Little quirks are separate from personality. They are gifts or behaviours that can change how a Mii walks, eats or sleeps; receiving a quirk does not replace the personality type assigned during creation.
How do I edit an existing Mii?
You can reopen the creator without deleting the islander. From the menu, open the Residents list, select the Mii and choose edit. You can also talk to the Mii and open the Mii menu; Game8 identifies Y as the menu button in that route. The full creator then allows changes to the face, name, body, personality and other profile settings while relationships, levels and island progress remain in place.

Editing is the safer way to correct a voice, adjust a likeness, change dating preferences or redesign a character. Save the resident before leaving the creator so the revised details are applied to the island.
How do I delete a Mii?
Open Edit Mii, choose Delete, review the confirmation and accept only after removing anything you want to keep. Game8 reports a fee of at least 33 in-game dollars and warns that belongings attached to that Mii are deleted. The exact amount should be checked on your current confirmation screen before you approve the removal.
Can I import Miis from Switch Mii Maker, Miitopia, QR codes or amiibo?
You can reuse a face from the console’s Mii list, but Nintendo does not support direct import from Miitopia. Mii data created inside Living the Dream also cannot be sent back to the console or exported to other software.
Use a Mii already on Switch or Switch 2
- Open System Settings > Mii and create or edit the system Mii.
- In Living the Dream, choose Create from Mii on console.
- Select the system Mii, then complete the island-specific fields such as height, personality, identity and voice.
Copy a Mii from an amiibo
On a compatible console, register the Mii to the amiibo and copy it into the system Mii Maker by holding the figure at the console’s NFC point. Once the face appears in the system Mii list, use Create from Mii on console in the game. The amiibo is an intermediate source; it is not an in-game import command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteScan a QR code on Switch 2
Switch 2 can scan a Mii QR image in System Settings > Mii with a compatible USB camera, such as the separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera. USB-C cameras connect directly to the console; standard USB cameras connect to the dock. The QR scan creates a system Mii first, after which Living the Dream can copy its face. Nintendo has not confirmed a QR scanner inside the game itself, so do not expect to scan a code from the island’s Add a Mii menu.

Send or receive nearby system Miis
System Mii Maker supports local-wireless sending and receiving between nearby consoles. After receiving the character into the console’s Mii list, select it through the game’s console-Mii path. This is different from transferring a Living the Dream resident to another game, which Nintendo says is not supported.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes between Switch and Switch 2?
Mii creation and Studio Workshop support touch controls on both systems. Switch 2 may load scenes faster and offers 1080p handheld output and GameChat features for Nintendo Switch Online members, but the Mii editor and island content are the same. Handheld Mode Boost is not relevant because handheld play already targets 1080p. Joy-Con 2 mouse input is not available, so use touch or sticks for face-paint drawing.
Why is Add a Mii unavailable?
- The island has 70 residents: delete or combine a resident before adding another.
- A story event is active: finish the event and return to the residents menu.
- You are in the wrong user profile: each user has a separate island save, so switch to the profile that owns the intended island.
- A console Mii is missing: create or receive it in System Settings > Mii first, then reopen the game’s console-Mii option.
How do I make cute, anime, animal or alien Miis?
Start From Scratch rather than Get Help so every proportion remains under your control. For an anime-inspired face, enlarge the eyes, use an unusual hair colour with a contrasting sub-colour, and reserve face paint for graphic markings. For an animal or alien, combine the custom skin picker, non-standard eye colour, Pointy or Large ears, a simplified nose or mouth, and face paint such as whiskers. The game’s native parts follow the head better than face paint, so use paint for flat symbols and reserve three-dimensional features for shapes that must hold from multiple angles.
Recommended Free Tools
Assign family links before island relationships develop if two characters represent real relatives. That prevents the game from treating connected family members as potential romantic partners while preserving the freedom to give unrelated original characters any dating preference.
How can I share a finished creation?
The official store description supports sending your Mii and Palette House creations to a nearby friend’s system through local wireless. This sharing feature does not turn the resident into transferable system-Mii data, and it does not create a Miitopia import. Screenshot and video transfer-to-phone features, including some automatic uploads to the Nintendo Switch App, are disabled for this title.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the free demo keep my Miis when I buy the full game?
Yes. The official demo allows up to three resident creations, and its save data carries into the full version. Completing the demo also grants a Hamster Costume, which is obtainable in the full game as well.
Can I send a Living the Dream Mii back to System Settings or Miitopia?
No. Nintendo says residents created in Living the Dream cannot be transferred to the Switch or Switch 2 Mii list or to other software. The supported direction is from the console Mii list into a new island resident.
Can I use a QR code without buying a Switch 2 Camera?
Only if you already have another compatible USB camera. Switch 2’s QR workflow belongs to System Settings > Mii, and the camera is sold separately; the game itself has no confirmed QR-import screen.
Why do some online personality charts use different names?
The game has 16 types generated from five sliders, but published English name lists disagree. Treat the label shown after your own Mii’s confirmation as authoritative rather than matching a third-party chart.
Why can’t I upload this game’s screenshots to my phone?
Nintendo disables some screenshot and video transfer-to-phone functions and automatic Nintendo Switch App uploads for Living the Dream. Local wireless sharing of Mii and Palette House creations is a separate in-game feature.
