Token0 can reduce vision-model spending, but 98.9% is not a universal guarantee. It is an Apache-2.0 open-source proxy that analyzes each image request, resizes or converts the input, extracts text when an image is really a document, chooses a cheaper model when appropriate, and reuses cached answers. Pritom Mazumdar’s 2026 cost table projects 98.9% savings for specific GPT-4o workloads at several traffic levels. The same project reports lower savings on local-model suites and much larger savings on text-heavy images. Your result depends on image mix, prompts, provider prices, cache hits, and model routing.
What is Token0 and why can it lower vision LLM costs?
Token0 sits between your application and a vision-capable language-model provider. Instead of changing every prompt or rewriting an SDK integration, you point an OpenAI-compatible client at the proxy and pass the upstream provider key. The request path is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your application sends a chat request with an image and prompt.
- Token0 analyzes the request and classifies the image and task.
- It selects transformations, detail settings, a cache lookup, and possibly a cheaper model.
- The optimized request goes to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or an Ollama vision model.
- The response returns in an OpenAI-compatible shape, with a
token0object describing the optimization.
The proxy records original-token estimates, optimized tokens, tokens saved, cost saved, cache status, and cascade destination in its usage data. Because image billing is often based on processed pixels or tiles rather than the file’s byte size, removing pixels, replacing pictures with extracted text, and avoiding repeated calls can cut charges without changing the application’s business logic.
Where the apparent waste comes from
Token0’s documentation uses illustrative provider formulas. A 4,000×3,000 photograph is estimated at about 1,590 Claude tokens after downscaling to the provider’s cited 1,568-pixel limit. A document screenshot is estimated at about 765 GPT-4.1 image tokens, while extracting its information as text is about 30 tokens. A simple classification request is shown as 1,105 high-detail tokens versus 85 low-detail tokens.

Those are project documentation examples, not independent measurements. They show why a large, text-heavy, repeatedly seen image can be a poor candidate for an unoptimized vision call.
How does Token0 optimize an image request under the hood?
Token0 applies several independent optimizations. A request may use one or many of them, depending on the image, prompt, provider, and deployment mode.
1. Smart resize removes pixels the model will discard
The proxy resizes an image toward the maximum resolution the selected provider actually processes. The project cites 1,568 pixels for Claude and 2,048 pixels for GPT-4.1. Sending a larger original therefore adds upload work and can add no useful model detail. Resizing is not the same as blindly shrinking every image: a text-reading task may retain more detail than a coarse classification task.
2. OCR routing replaces document pictures with text
Receipts, invoices, screenshots, and forms often contain information that a text-capable model can process more cheaply than a pixel grid. Token0 looks for signals such as uniform backgrounds, color variance, horizontal-line structure, and edge density. If the image appears text-heavy, it extracts text and routes that representation instead of the image. Mazumdar’s original description reports 91% validation accuracy for this heuristic; that figure is an author report, not a formal independent accuracy study.
3. PDF text layers avoid rendering typed pages
For a typed PDF, Token0 uses pypdf to extract the embedded text. A scanned PDF with no text layer falls back to image passthrough, because there is no reliable text to extract. The package documentation gives a two-page invoice example of roughly 1,530 vision tokens becoming roughly 80 text tokens when a text layer is available.
4. JPEG recompression reduces payload overhead
PNG screenshots can be converted to optimized JPEG when transparency is unnecessary. This primarily reduces upload size and latency; it does not by itself change a provider’s token formula. Keep PNG when transparency or pixel-perfect lossless detail matters.

5. Prompt-aware detail selects the least expensive useful mode
The prompt helps Token0 distinguish a simple “what category is this?” request from a demanding transcription. Its examples show about 85 tokens for low detail and 1,105 for high detail. Low detail can be appropriate for presence checks, broad labels, and rough descriptions; high detail is safer when tiny characters, table cells, or handwriting determine the answer.
6. Tile-aware resizing avoids an extra billing tile
OpenAI-style image billing can count 512×512 tiles. Token0 resizes toward tile boundaries instead of preserving dimensions that trigger an unnecessary tile. Its example changes a 1,280×720 image from four tiles (about 765 tokens) to two tiles (about 425 tokens), a stated 44% reduction for that case.
7. A model cascade sends easy work to cheaper models
Classification and routine extraction can go to a lower-cost model while difficult reasoning remains on a flagship. Examples in the project include GPT-4o to GPT-4o-mini, Claude Opus to Claude Haiku, and GPT-4.1 to GPT-4.1 mini or nano. A cascade must preserve the quality threshold your application needs; the cheapest destination is not automatically equivalent.
8. Semantic and fuzzy caching prevents repeat calls
Token0 caches image-plus-prompt responses using perceptual hashes. Its package description adds QJL-compressed fuzzy matching so visually similar images can reuse an answer, not only byte-for-byte duplicates. The project reports an additional 62% token saving in its own benchmarks. Similarity thresholds need care: an overly permissive cache can return an answer for an image that is only superficially similar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems9. Video frames and accessibility trees provide alternate inputs
For video, the proxy can extract and deduplicate keyframes rather than sending every frame. For browser content, it prefers a complete accessibility tree over a screenshot. It falls back to screenshots for canvas, iframe, or video elements that the tree cannot describe.
Is the 98.9% saving real for every workload?
No. The 98.9% figure is a projection for specific GPT-4o traffic scenarios in Mazumdar’s 2026 article, calculated from published token formulas and the author’s direct-cost versus Token0-cost assumptions. It is not a guarantee, and the follow-up explicitly distinguishes those projections from local-model benchmark measurements.

A realistic budget estimate should therefore model your own mix: photographs versus documents, prompt complexity, detail mode, model cascade destinations, cache-hit rate, and the provider prices that apply to your account and region. A workload dominated by unique, high-detail photographs may save far less than one dominated by repeated invoices.
Which providers and deployment modes does Token0 support?
The project lists OpenAI GPT-4.1 and GPT-4o families, Anthropic Claude Sonnet, Opus, and Haiku families, Google Gemini 2.5 Flash and Pro, and vision models served by Ollama. Compatibility is exposed through an OpenAI-style chat endpoint, but model names, image limits, and billing rules still come from the upstream provider.

Lite mode
Lite mode uses SQLite and in-memory storage, making it suitable for a local proof of concept or a small service. It minimizes infrastructure but is not the same durability or horizontal-scaling setup as a production deployment.
Full mode
The documented full configuration uses PostgreSQL for durable records, Redis for shared caching or coordination, and S3-compatible storage such as MinIO for objects. Choose it when multiple proxy instances, persistent usage reporting, or larger media volumes justify operational dependencies.
How do I install and test Token0?
The quickest path is a local proxy and an existing provider key.
- Install the package.
pip install token0 - Start the service.
token0 serveBy default, the documented quick start uses
http://localhost:8000/v1. - Point your client at Token0. Change the SDK’s base URL to
http://localhost:8000/v1rather than changing your prompts. - Pass the upstream key. Include it in the
X-Provider-Keyrequest header. An optionalX-Token0-Keyheader enables Token0 usage tracking. - Send a normal chat-completions request. Keep the provider model name and image content in the format expected by that provider.
- Inspect the result. Read the added
token0field for original-token estimates, optimized tokens, savings, cache status, and cascade destination.
Before sending production traffic, use the estimate endpoint to examine optimization without making an LLM call or supplying a provider key:

POST /v1/estimate
The operational endpoints documented by the project are:
| Endpoint | Purpose | Provider call? |
|---|---|---|
POST /v1/chat/completions |
OpenAI-compatible optimized inference | Usually, unless a cache hit serves the response |
POST /v1/estimate |
Estimate original and optimized usage | No LLM call; no provider key required |
GET /v1/usage |
Review recorded usage and savings | No |
GET /health |
Check service health | No |
Streaming behavior
The v0.2.0 release notes say stream=true enables Server-Sent Events for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Ollama paths. Cached responses can also be emitted in chunks, so a cache hit does not require abandoning a streaming user interface.
What can go wrong, and how should I diagnose it?
The answer loses small text
Force or request high detail for transcription, tables, and fine print. Compare the transformed image with the original and disable aggressive JPEG conversion when compression artifacts obscure characters.
A scan is not converted to text
That is expected when a PDF has no embedded text layer. Use an OCR-capable image workflow for scanned pages, and treat the resulting text as an extraction that still needs application-level validation.

Raise the similarity threshold or disable fuzzy matching for safety-critical or rapidly changing images. Cache keys should include the prompt and any task parameters that change the expected answer.
What should you measure before adopting Token0?
Run a representative sample rather than relying on the 98.9% projection. Include your largest image dimensions, document scans, screenshots, repeated assets, and the prompts that require high detail. Record quality as well as token reduction: extraction accuracy, classification errors, latency, cache-hit rate, and the percentage of requests routed to each model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Compare unoptimized and optimized token estimates on the same payloads.
- Review whether OCR routing changes formatting or loses layout information your application needs.
- Set a quality gate before allowing a request to cascade from a flagship model to a cheaper one.
- Test cold-cache and warm-cache latency separately.
- Budget proxy storage and data-retention controls alongside provider charges.
Token0 is most compelling when images are oversized, document-heavy, repetitive, or simple enough for a cheaper model. It is less likely to approach the headline percentage when every image is unique, visually complex, and already near the provider’s useful resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Token0 require changing my prompts or application logic?
The intended integration is a base-URL change plus the upstream key in X-Provider-Key. Your existing OpenAI-compatible request shape can remain in place, although you should still verify provider-specific image formats and model names.
Can I calculate savings without risking an API charge?
Yes. POST /v1/estimate is documented as requiring neither an LLM call nor a provider key. Use it to compare original and transformed usage before enabling inference.
Will Token0 work if my organization cannot use a hosted model?
The project lists Ollama vision models as a provider option, so a self-hosted route is possible. Infrastructure, GPU capacity, and the quality of the selected local model remain your responsibility.
How should I handle sensitive invoices or screenshots?
The proxy can inspect and transform the content before forwarding it, so apply the same privacy, retention, and access controls you use for any service handling confidential data. In full mode, review PostgreSQL, Redis, and S3/MinIO retention settings rather than assuming optimized images are never stored.
Why might a cached response be wrong even when two images look alike?
Perceptual matching can treat visually similar but semantically different images as near-duplicates. Use exact or stricter cache matching for changing dashboards, serial numbers, prices, and other fields where a small visual difference changes the answer.
