The TL072 is a dual, JFET-input operational amplifier that became a familiar building block in audio circuits because it combines very high input impedance with low bias current, low noise, internal compensation and a useful slew rate. Texas Instruments introduced the TL07x family in 1977 and identified the TL072 as its compensated dual device. It is still listed as an active part, but “default” should be understood as a long-running industry choice rather than a claim that every pedal, synthesizer or mixing desk uses it. The right choice today depends on source impedance, supply rails, bandwidth, distortion, package and the exact manufacturer suffix.

What is a TL072 op amp?

The TL072 is the dual member of Texas Instruments’ TL07x family of low-noise, JFET-input operational amplifiers. “Dual” means that one integrated circuit contains two independent op-amp channels, which is useful for stereo paths, active filters, buffers, summing stages and other designs that need two amplifiers in one package.

Its input stage uses junction field-effect transistors (JFETs), while bipolar-transistor circuitry provides voltage gain and output drive. That combination was important for audio designers because a JFET input draws very little input current. A high-impedance pickup, sensor or preamplifier stage is therefore loaded less heavily than it would be by many older bipolar-input amplifiers.

Texas Instruments advertised the BIFET TL07x family in September 1977 and described the parts for “high-fidelity and audio preamplifier applications.” The TL072 was the compensated dual version. Internal frequency compensation makes the device easier to use as a general-purpose voltage-feedback amplifier, provided the circuit remains within the data-sheet limits.

Why did the TL072 become so common in audio?

The TL072 addressed several practical problems at once: it presented a high input impedance, required little input bias current, produced comparatively low noise, included internal compensation and offered a relatively high slew rate for its era. Those characteristics made it a convenient fit for many signal-conditioning stages rather than a specialist part requiring unusual compensation or biasing.

High input impedance for passive sources

Guitar pickups, piezo elements and some sensor circuits can have substantial source impedance. An amplifier that draws appreciable input current can alter the source’s frequency response or reduce its level. The TL072’s JFET input minimizes that loading effect, so designers could place it directly after a high-impedance source or use it as a buffer.

Low current-related errors

Low input bias and offset currents help when the source or feedback resistors are large. That does not eliminate offset voltage, resistor noise or pickup interference, but it reduces one common error mechanism in high-impedance audio stages.

Noise, distortion and speed suitable for audio bandwidth

Texas Instruments’ TL07xx datasheet says: “The low harmonic distortion and low noise make the TL07x series ideally suited for high-fidelity and audio preamplifier applications.” Its published figures include low input-referred noise, low typical total harmonic distortion and a slew rate high enough for many audible-frequency signal levels. Actual performance depends on gain, frequency, source impedance, load and supply voltage.

A familiar, economical dual format

Putting two channels in one IC reduced board area and simplified stereo or multi-stage designs. The part was produced in through-hole and surface-mount packages, making it practical for equipment manufactured across several generations. Long availability also gave engineers a known pin-compatible starting point when maintaining older designs, although the exact package and suffix must still be checked.

What are the published TL072 specifications?

There is no single universal number for every TL072. Figures differ by manufacturer, grade, data-sheet revision and test condition. The following values are representative published typical figures from the named sources, not guaranteed limits for every orderable suffix.

These values should not be averaged into a pretend “standard” specification. A lower typical noise number from one vendor may have been measured under different conditions from another vendor’s distortion or slew-rate figure. For a production design, use the data sheet for the exact manufacturer, package, grade and revision you intend to buy, and design against guaranteed minimum or maximum limits where they are provided.

How does a TL072 behave in a real audio circuit?

The TL072 is a conventional voltage-feedback op amp, so its behavior is set by feedback, supply rails, load and signal frequency. Its headline specifications matter only when they match the circuit’s operating conditions.

Input impedance and source resistance

JFET inputs make the TL072 attractive for high-impedance sources, but the rest of the circuit still matters. Very large resistor values generate their own thermal noise and can make a node more susceptible to leakage, contamination and interference. Choose resistor values by balancing loading, noise and bias-current error rather than assuming that the highest possible resistance is always best.

Bandwidth and slew rate

A 3 MHz gain-bandwidth figure does not mean a circuit has 3 MHz of flat closed-loop bandwidth. Closed-loop gain consumes that bandwidth, and filters, capacitive loads and stability requirements reduce the usable range. Slew rate limits how quickly the output voltage can change; a 13 V/µs typical value can be adequate for ordinary audio, but high-level, high-frequency or fast transient signals require a calculation using the required peak voltage and frequency.

Supply headroom and output swing

The TL072 is not automatically a rail-to-rail device. Input common-mode range and output-voltage swing must be checked against the actual positive and negative rails, especially in a single-supply pedal or portable circuit. A design that biases audio around a virtual midpoint may work, while a signal driven too close to a supply rail can clip or lose linearity before the nominal output voltage is reached.

Load and stability

Published distortion and slew figures are measured under specified loads. Driving a low-impedance load, a long cable or a capacitive input can change stability and output behavior. Follow the exact data-sheet conditions, provide local supply bypassing, and consider an isolation resistor or other compensation recommended for the intended load if the application presents significant capacitance.

Is the TL072 good for guitar pedals?

It can be a good choice for pedal stages that benefit from a high-impedance input, such as a buffer, tone-control filter or preamplifier. The JFET input is especially relevant when the circuit connects directly to a passive pickup. However, suitability depends on the pedal’s supply arrangement, signal level, desired clipping behavior, noise target and available output headroom.

Do not assume that a pedal containing a TL072 is automatically quieter, cleaner or better than one using another op amp. A pedal’s resistors, power filtering, grounding, layout, switching scheme and intentional nonlinear stages can dominate the audible result. Also, not every guitar pedal uses a TL072; the part is an application option, not a category requirement.

For a replacement, confirm that the original circuit expects a dual op amp, that the package matches, and that the replacement’s input range, output swing, supply limits and stability behavior are suitable. A device that fits the socket can still clip, oscillate or draw the wrong current if those conditions differ.

What is the difference between TL072 and TL072H?

TL072H is a newer member of the same broad family, with higher published supply capability, wider gain bandwidth and a higher typical slew rate than the figures TI lists for the current TL072. It is not enough to compare the names; verify package, pin compatibility and the complete electrical tables before substituting it.

Published item TL072, Texas Instruments current listing TL072H, Texas Instruments family listing
Maximum total supply 30 V 40 V
Gain bandwidth 3 MHz 5 MHz
Typical slew rate 13 V/µs 20 V/µs
Package and suffix compatibility Must be checked for the ordered part Must be checked for the ordered part

The higher ratings of TL072H may help a new design that needs more supply margin or speed, but they do not guarantee a sonic improvement in an existing circuit. If the original stage is limited by pickup noise, resistor noise, clipping at the rails or a narrow filter, extra bandwidth and slew rate will not remove that limitation.

Can I replace a TL072 with another dual JFET op amp?

Sometimes, but “dual” and “JFET input” alone do not establish a safe replacement. Compare the following items for the exact circuit:

  • Output swing and load: verify that the output can reach the required voltage into the actual load without excessive distortion.
  • Noise and source impedance: compare voltage-noise and current-noise behavior with the circuit’s source resistance; a lower voltage-noise number alone is not decisive.
  • Bandwidth, slew rate and stability: a faster part can alter filtering, phase margin or oscillation behavior in a layout designed around the original.
  • Temperature grade and authenticity: industrial, commercial and other grades can have different limits, and counterfeit or remarked parts can invalidate otherwise correct calculations.

If any of these items is unknown, treat the replacement as a redesign rather than a drop-in swap. The safest choice for repair is the same manufacturer family, suffix and package specified by the original equipment documentation.

What should I check when buying a TL072 DIP-8?

“TL072 dual JFET op amp IC” identifies the function, but a purchase listing still needs a complete part number. Confirm the manufacturer, suffix, package designation, temperature grade and date or lot marking where applicable. TI currently lists TL072 in PDIP, SOIC, TSSOP and related packages, while ST lists TL072, TL072A and TL072B as active products in volume production; those families should not be treated as interchangeable without comparing their data sheets.

  1. Match the package to the board or socket. A surface-mount SOIC or TSSOP part is not a mechanical substitute for a through-hole DIP-8 without an adapter.
  2. Match the suffix and manufacturer to the service documentation. Letter grades can carry different guaranteed limits.
  3. Read the seller’s photographs and markings critically. Missing, inconsistent or freshly re-marked package text is a reason to choose an authorized supply channel instead.
  4. After installation, check the supply current, output bias and signal path before connecting a valuable instrument or speaker. A wrong or damaged IC can create symptoms that look like a circuit fault.

What are the TL072’s main limitations?

The TL072’s reputation does not remove the constraints of its original architecture. It may be a poor fit when a design requires rail-to-rail input or output operation, very low-voltage single-supply operation, a specified output drive into a demanding load or a guaranteed noise figure at a particular source impedance. Those requirements call for a comparison against newer parts designed for them.

  • Single-supply headroom: a virtual ground can center the signal, but the input and output still need room from the real rails.
  • Noise trade-offs: JFET input voltage noise can be favorable for high source resistance, while another architecture may perform better with a low-resistance source.
  • Typical versus guaranteed data: a typical 0.003% distortion or 13 V/µs slew-rate figure is not a production guarantee unless the data sheet labels it as such.
  • Package variation: thermal behavior, assembly constraints and pin accessibility differ between PDIP and surface-mount versions.
  • Supply bypassing and layout: inadequate decoupling or long, capacitive traces can create noise or instability that is not a defect in the nominal part specification.

Why do TL072 specifications differ between manufacturers?

TI and ST publish their own electrical data for parts made to their respective processes, grades and test methods. Even when two devices carry the TL072 name, typical input noise, distortion and slew-rate figures can differ. Data-sheet revision, temperature, supply voltage, frequency, load and sample selection also affect a typical value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, compare like with like: same frequency, source impedance, supply rails, closed-loop gain, output load and temperature. Use guaranteed limits for compliance decisions, and treat typical figures as design guidance rather than a promise that every unit will match the headline number.

Is the TL072 still available?

As of the current manufacturer listings accessed in 2026, Texas Instruments lists TL072 as active in several package families, and STMicroelectronics lists TL072, TL072A and TL072B as active products in volume production. Product status, package availability and specifications can change, so verify the manufacturer page and current data sheet at the time of purchase.

The part’s longevity explains why it remains common in repair catalogs and legacy schematics, but availability of one package or suffix does not guarantee availability of every variant. Plan a second-source or redesign option if a product will be manufactured for many years.

What is the TL072’s place in audio history?

The TL072 arrived when designers wanted an audio op amp that combined low-noise behavior with the light loading of a FET input. Its 1977 introduction, dual-channel format and broad package availability helped it spread through analog audio practice. Later technical histories associate the family with guitar pedals, synthesizers and mixing desks, but those are application contexts, not evidence that every product in those categories used this exact IC.

Its lasting importance is therefore practical rather than mythical: it offered a useful compromise, became familiar to engineers and repair technicians, and remained available long enough to become a reference point for comparing newer audio op amps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a TL072 need split power supplies?

No single wiring arrangement can be assumed from the part number. It can be used in split-rail circuits or in a single-supply design with an appropriate bias point, but the input and output headroom must be checked against the actual rails and signal amplitude.

Will a TL072 be quieter than every bipolar-input audio op amp?

No. JFET input noise can suit high-impedance sources, while a bipolar-input device may have an advantage with low source resistance. Compare both voltage-noise and current-noise data under the source impedance and bandwidth your circuit actually uses.

Does the TL072 package change its audio character?

The package can change thermal behavior, layout parasitics and assembly details, but the larger decision is the exact silicon grade and its specified operating conditions. Treat a package change as an engineering change: verify pinout, limits, decoupling and mechanical fit rather than assuming identical behavior.

What does the letter after TL072 usually tell me?

A suffix can identify a manufacturer’s grade, revision or package family, and those variants may carry different guaranteed limits. Read the ordering information and electrical-characteristics table for the complete part number instead of relying on the shared TL072 name.
