A TikTok suspension or feature restriction is an enforcement action that can limit account access or a specific function; what people call a “shadowban” is more accurately checked as recommendation ineligibility. TikTok does not identify a formal “shadowban” status in its Help Center guidance. Start with Profile > Menu > TikTok Studio > Account check, then inspect your notifications for the specific decision and its appeal route. A drop in views may be a reason to investigate, but it does not by itself prove a restriction.

What is the difference between a TikTok suspension and a shadowban?
A suspension or feature restriction is about whether you can use your account or a particular function. Recommendation ineligibility is about whether TikTok may recommend an account or post to other people. A low-view post, a sudden change in reach, or a quiet spell does not establish that TikTok restricted the account. The official instructions provide notices and account-status tools, not a view threshold or a view-count test that diagnoses recommendation ineligibility. Treat reach changes as a prompt to check, not as proof.
How can I tell which restriction I have?
Use two checks together: Account Check shows standing across specific account functions, while notifications and post insights identify enforcement or recommendation decisions. The type of notice—and whether you can log in or use a feature—helps distinguish the issue.
Can you log in?
If TikTok has banned the account, a banner notice appears when you log in. TikTok says a banned user can log in to appeal and download personal data. If you can use the account but a function is blocked, check the corresponding category in Account Check rather than assuming the entire account is banned.
Is one function unavailable?
TikTok’s Account Check covers login, posting, comments, profile editing, and direct messages. A warning for one of these categories points to a specific account-standing issue; it is not the same as a post-level For You eligibility decision. TikTok says a checkmark means no issue is shown for that item, while a warning sign indicates an issue.
Is there an account or post recommendation notice?
For an account-level recommendation decision, look for an Inbox notification or a notice below your username on Profile. A post-level decision appears in the affected post’s Analytics or More insights. Read the notice to identify which content or decision TikTok is addressing before choosing an appeal route.
If none of those notices appears, do not label the account suspended or shadowbanned based on analytics alone. Recheck the notice locations and Account Check, especially if the reach change is recent. A clean Account Check means no issue is shown in its listed categories; it is not a finding that every post is eligible for For You recommendations.

Open Account Check in the TikTok app and review each listed category. TikTok documents two navigation routes; labels can vary by app version and region.
- Primary route: Go to Profile > Menu > TikTok Studio > Account check.
- Alternative route: Go to Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Support > Safety Center > Account check.

Account Check can identify a login or feature issue; the account-level recommendation notice identifies a recommendation decision affecting the account and its posts; and an individual video’s insights can show that post’s For You eligibility decision. Checking one screen does not replace checking the others when the symptoms involve more than one part of TikTok.

How do I appeal a TikTok ban or recommendation restriction?
Appeal from the notice for the decision you are challenging. TikTok provides different paths for a banned account, an account made ineligible for recommendation, and an individual post found ineligible for the For You feed.
If the account is banned
- Log in to TikTok and open the ban banner.
- Select Appeal and follow the instructions shown in the app.
- Address the decision stated in that notice. Keep the explanation specific to the reason TikTok gives rather than making a general request to restore reach.
TikTok says banned users can log in to appeal and download personal data. The notice is therefore the starting point even if access to the account has been banned. If you want a copy of your personal data, the ban process offers that option as well; it is separate from the appeal itself.
If the account is ineligible for recommendation
- Open the recommendation-ineligibility notification in Inbox, or find the notice below your username on Profile.
- Review the videos TikTok identifies as ineligible and the reason provided.
- Select Appeal from the notice and explain why you believe the account-level decision is mistaken.
TikTok says the account and its posts may become ineligible after repeated posting of content unsuitable for the For You feed. Its guidance says eligibility may be restored automatically depending on how much content is unsuitable, or the creator may appeal; it does not promise a restoration date or a successful appeal. If one post is ineligible for the For You feed
- Open the affected video and go to Analytics or More insights.
- Select the ineligibility notification to see the decision details.
- Use the appeal option shown in that notice if you believe the decision is wrong.
TikTok says Analytics must be turned on to see the decision details for a post. If the notice is not visible, confirm that Analytics is enabled before concluding that there is no post-level decision to review. Do not use an account-level appeal route to challenge a single post, or a post-level route to challenge an account ban; follow the notice that corresponds to the decision.
What should I include in an appeal?
Make the appeal about the specific notice, the item it identifies, and why you believe the decision is mistaken. TikTok’s instructions route users through the relevant in-app notice; the strongest practical approach is to respond to the decision shown there rather than treating a general reduction in views as the evidence.
- Identify the account or specific post decision shown in the notice.
- Explain briefly why you think that decision is incorrect, referring to the content or context at issue.
- Keep the notice details available while the appeal is pending so you can refer to the actual reason and affected item.
- If restoring the content matters, do not delete it while the appeal is pending. TikTok says deleted content may not be restored, and deleting a post does not remove an account strike.
Before submitting, check that you are appealing the right decision: the login banner for a ban, the Inbox or Profile notice for account-level recommendation ineligibility, or the video’s insights notice for post-level ineligibility. Explain the point of disagreement clearly and stay tied to the identified content or reason. TikTok’s published instructions do not promise a particular review time, a successful outcome, or a separate reach-restoration process.
For a post-level issue, use that post’s own Analytics or More insights notice. For an account-level recommendation decision, use the Inbox or Profile notice. A ban appeal starts from the login banner. Choosing the matching path keeps the appeal tied to the decision TikTok says it will review.
Will a restriction go away on its own, and how long does recovery take?
TikTok says account-level recommendation eligibility may be restored automatically depending on how much unsuitable content is on the account, and it also allows an appeal. The guidance does not specify a recovery timetable, guarantee automatic restoration, or promise that appealing will succeed.
TikTok separately says account strikes expire after 90 days and then no longer count toward the threshold for a permanent account ban. That is a rule about strikes, not a general 90-day recovery period for recommendation reach. Do not use the strike-expiry window to predict when views will return.
These timelines describe different things: recommendation eligibility may be restored based on the account’s content, while strike expiry affects whether prior strikes count toward a permanent-ban threshold.
