Chrono Trigger is the finished game you can play today; Threads of Time is an unreleased indie homage planned for Summer 2027. Both are turn-based, time-travel RPGs built around recruiting heroes from different eras and combining their abilities, but only Chrono Trigger has a documented campaign, endings, balance and long-term reception. Threads of Time’s Timebar combat, four-person battles, Unreal Engine 5 presentation and timeline-changing story remain previews rather than proven features.
That makes this comparison less about declaring a winner and more about choosing between a completed 1995 classic and a promising successor-inspired project. The sections below separate confirmed facts from marketing and preview reporting so you know what you can play now, what to wishlist, and what not to assume.

What is the real difference between Threads of Time and Chrono Trigger?
Chrono Trigger is a shipped Square role-playing game from 1995, while Threads of Time is an unreleased Canadian indie RPG that openly draws from it. Chrono Trigger’s systems, story structure and endings can be discussed from the finished game. Threads of Time can only be assessed from its Steam description, trailers and preview coverage, so claims about its balance, length, final plot or replay value would be premature.
Chrono Trigger launched on the Super Famicom in Japan on 11 March 1995 and on the North American SNES on 22 August 1995. It was never originally released on a European SNES; Europe received the original version through Wii Virtual Console in 2011 and the Nintendo DS edition in 2009. The game’s central threat is Lavos, a parasitic alien that destroys the world in 1999 AD. A party led by Crono travels through history to prevent that catastrophe.

Threads of Time was announced during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show showcase on 26 September 2024. Riyo Games describes it as “an era-spanning, turn-based RPG inspired by the timeless classics.” The current Steam listing targets 2027, and a Steam news post dated 28 October 2026 says, “Threads of Time is ✨COMING SUMMER 2027✨.” That seasonal window is more reliable than a GameSpot database entry showing 30 September 2027, which conflicts with Steam’s wording.
Threads of Time is not an official sequel, and Square Enix is neither its developer nor its publisher. Steam currently lists Balor Games, while 2025 showcases and articles also named Humble Games; coverage in October 2026 listed both. The publisher information has therefore changed or been presented inconsistently.

Chrono Trigger has a fully documented Active Time Battle system with field-map encounters and named Dual and Triple Techs. Threads of Time previews strategic turn-based battles built around a Timebar, time manipulation and party combos, but those mechanics may still change.
Chrono Trigger: ATB 2.0 without random encounters
Enemies are visible on the field, and combat begins on the same map rather than cutting to a separate battle screen. There are no random encounters. Each character has a personal timer; when it fills, you choose Attack, Item or Tech. This is Active Time Battle 2.0, and waiting too long lets enemies continue acting.
Position matters because enemies move and Techs cover different shapes, such as a cluster or a line. Every character learns eight personal Techs. When compatible characters have enough MP, their abilities combine automatically into Dual Techs or Triple Techs. Crono’s Cyclone and Lucca’s Flame Toss, for example, create Fire Whirl. The three-person battle party is drawn from a seven-character roster, so team composition and access to particular combinations are part of the strategy.
The system’s appeal is that it links character relationships directly to combat decisions. A new recruit is not merely another statistic block: that character may unlock a different area attack, healing option or combo. Because the encounters are visible, players can also decide when to engage and when to keep moving.

Riyo Games’ official feature copy promises “visually dynamic strategic turn-based battles,” the ability to bend time, unravel defenses and unleash team combos. ScreenRant’s 21 September 2026 preview describes a Timebar that resembles a timeline of turn order, with some attacks appearing to splash onto later turns. That suggests a system where manipulating initiative is as important as selecting a target, but the developer has not published a complete combat design document.
Turn Based Lovers reported tools that could slow enemies, unravel defenses or rewind under certain conditions. Treat the rewind detail as unconfirmed until an official combat deep-dive. GameRant and other coverage cite four party members in battle, compared with Chrono Trigger’s three. The official materials call the combinations a Chrono Trigger-inspired idea, not Dual Techs or Triple Techs by name.

Eurogamer’s Ed Nightingale described the previewed battles as turn-based but deep, with a camera between Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest, fighters occupying foreground and background positions. That is a critic’s description of footage, not a performance benchmark. Until the game ships, you should regard the Timebar, four-person party and any rewind rules as provisional.
How does time travel work in each game?
Chrono Trigger uses time travel as a playable cause-and-effect system. Threads of Time presents era-hopping as both its story structure and a set of combat tools, but the full consequences of its choices have not been demonstrated in a finished release.

Chrono Trigger’s gates, Epoch and cascading consequences
The story starts at the Millennial Fair in 1000 AD. Lucca’s teleporter malfunctions when Marle’s pendant reacts with it, opening a gate to 600 AD. Marle is mistaken for Queen Leene, creating the first paradox the player must resolve. The party later reaches 2300 AD and learns that Lavos destroyed the world in 1999 AD.
After the End of Time becomes available as a hub, the player gains more freedom. The Wings of Time, usually called the Epoch, provides rapid access to eras, and Lavos can be challenged earlier than the apparent story route. The ending changes according to when and how the final battle is won. Chrono Trigger documents seven principal time periods: 65,000,000 BC, 12,000 BC, 600 AD, 1000 AD, 1999 AD, 2300 AD and the End of Time.
Optional quests turn historical changes into visible results. Helping someone in 600 AD can affect descendants in 1000 AD. Leaving Robo to restore a ruined forest produces a result four centuries later. Kotaku’s 2018 review noted that the middle of the game is relatively linear after the opening paradox lesson, while the endgame opens the major sidequests and optional Lavos attempts. The sense of history responding to earlier actions is therefore strongest once the game gives you freedom to revisit the timeline.
Threads of Time’s proposed eras and Time Knights
Threads of Time’s story hook is the fall of Rye’s medieval village and the attempt to rebuild the ancient Order of the Time Knights. Official copy says the player will unite heroes from different epochs to defend the timeline from “impending chaos and corruption.” Preview reporting describes choices in one era rippling into others, but that ripple effect is a pitch rather than a documented shipped mechanic.

The eras shown or listed in coverage include a dinosaur age around 12,000,000 BC, a 10,000 BC setting of tribal and elemental conflict, a 1000 AD medieval kingdom with oppression and sky pirates, underground vaults after an apocalypse, and a cyberpunk 2400 AD. A further apocalyptic period has also been listed. These dates are not a one-for-one copy of Chrono Trigger: its prehistoric era is 65,000,000 BC, while its 12,000 BC period is the floating Kingdom of Zeal.
Threads of Time uses a time-traveling airship called The Needle in GameRant’s October 2026 coverage. Turn Based Lovers separately described Barza’s 1000 AD airship as the Bandicoot; available sources do not establish that the two names refer to the same craft. Chrono Trigger’s Epoch is a confirmed vehicle with a defined role in the completed game.

Which characters and party sizes are confirmed?
Chrono Trigger’s playable cast is known in full: Crono, Marle (Princess Nadia), Lucca, Frog (Glenn), Robo (Prometheus R-66Y), Ayla and the optional Magus/Janus. They originate in different periods and have distinct Tech lists. Battles allow three active fighters from that seven-person roster.
Threads of Time’s named characters come from reporting rather than a final roster announcement. Rye is a 1000 AD twin-sword protagonist; Luna is a 10,000 BC fire mage; Aria is a 1000 AD support character who communicates through time; Rin is a 2400 AD kitsune or ninja; Bo is a 12-million-BC veterinarian and healer; and Barza is a 1000 AD sky pirate. A robot shown in footage has been noted by Eurogamer as reading like a Robo homage, but that does not make it the same character or confirm its role.
The four-person battle party cited by GameRant would give Threads of Time one more active slot than Chrono Trigger. That could support broader combo planning, but it also changes how much information the player must manage each turn. No final roster size, replacement rules or equivalent to Chrono Trigger’s optional Magus has been published.
How different are the visuals and presentation?
Chrono Trigger uses 16-bit Super NES sprites and Akira Toriyama’s character designs. Later PlayStation and other releases added anime cutscenes created with Toriyama/Bird Studio and Toei involvement. The original cartridge was 32 megabits and used battery-backed saves.
Threads of Time uses hand-crafted 2D pixel characters placed in three-dimensional Unreal Engine 5 environments. Its look is frequently compared with modern HD-2D RPGs, while PC Gamer highlighted neon cyberpunk streets, reflective puddles and chunky pixel heroes. Anime-style cutscenes are part of the pitch. GameRant argued that the combat camera is more cinematic than a static HD-2D presentation; that is an editorial opinion, not a measured result.
The production histories are also different. Chrono Trigger’s famous 1990s “Dream Team” brought together Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama, with direction by Takashi Tokita, Yoshinori Kitase and Akihiko Matsui, production by Kazuhiko Aoki, story work led by Masato Kato, and music by Yasunori Mitsuda with assistance from Nobuo Uematsu and one track by Noriko Matsueda.
Riyo Games is a Canadian indie studio making its first game. Eurogamer reported that team members have credits on Shovel Knight, Fortnite, Deltarune and Tomb Raider, with announced assistance from veterans and composers associated with the Xenoblade Chronicles and Mana series. No complete named guest-credit list was available in the available data, so individual contributors should not be inferred.
What can you play now, and which Chrono Trigger version is best?
Chrono Trigger is currently sold new on Steam and mobile. Original SNES and Nintendo DS cartridges are used-market purchases; Wii Virtual Console is no longer available. RPG Site’s 2025 version guidance preferred Nintendo DS if you already own compatible hardware, followed by SNES and then Steam. Kotaku’s 2018 review also called the DS edition the best version.

| Version | What it adds or changes | Important caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Super Famicom/SNES | The original 1995 presentation and controls | Physical copies are used; loose SNES cartridges were reported around $35 and complete-in-box copies from $180 or more in February 2026, but used prices fluctuate. |
| PlayStation | Anime cutscenes | Historically long load times; not the practical first choice today. |
| Nintendo DS | Tom Slattery retranslation, dual-screen interface, Lost Sanctum, Dimensional Vortex, Arena of the Ages and a thirteenth ending | Physical copies are used and no longer sold new through current digital storefronts. |
| iOS/Android | Portable digital version; the 2011 iOS release and 2012 Android release were later updated | The filtered tiling look cannot be disabled on mobile. |
| Steam/PC | Digital convenience, higher-resolution presentation and a classic pixel option added after criticism | RPG Site still cited music resetting after battles, diagonal-movement jitter, monitor-oriented UI/font issues and scrolling problems above 60 Hz; forcing 60 Hz can avoid the latter. |
Square Enix patched the 2018 PC release several times, including a sixth update on 11 March 2022 that added 21:9 support. Timed loads reported by RPG Site were roughly 13–14 seconds from dashboard to title on Steam Deck, two seconds to load a save and two seconds to reach the first battle; those figures belong to that source’s test setup, not a guarantee for every PC.
For the simplest legal route, Steam or mobile is the practical choice. If you already have a Nintendo DS, that edition combines the original game with the largest set of documented additions. Buying a used cartridge means checking authenticity, battery condition and seller return policies because prices and condition vary.
When does Threads of Time come out, and on which platforms?
The official Steam target is Summer 2027 on PC. Xbox Series X/S was confirmed in the 2024 Tokyo Game Show showcase. Switch and Switch 2 were listed by GameRant after an Indie World appearance and on a GameSpot game hub, but this research did not find a Nintendo product page; treat those as reported platforms rather than first-party store confirmation.
PlayStation 5 has appeared as a hope in fan coverage, not as a confirmed platform. The Steam page lists full controller support and ten supported languages, including English and French with full audio, plus Italian, German and Japanese. Because the game is unreleased, it has no user reviews, review scores, published completion time or sales figure. A report of more than 100,000 Steam wishlists dates to 15 March 2025 and is not a current count.
Wishlist the Steam version if you want release notifications, but do not treat a wishlist as a reservation or a guarantee that every reported console version will launch simultaneously.
Does Chrono Trigger have a remake?
No confirmed remake or current-generation port had been announced by 30 October 2026. Chrono Trigger is not officially available on PS5, Xbox Series or Nintendo Switch, even though its sequel, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, reached modern hardware in 2022.

Should you play Chrono Trigger now or wait for Threads of Time?
Play Chrono Trigger now if you want a complete story, proven combat, optional sidequests, New Game Plus and documented endings. Its seven eras, three-person parties and cause-and-effect quests are available without waiting for a release window. The game’s historical reputation is substantial: Wikipedia’s compiled figures report more than five million copies shipped across all versions by March 2025, although those are tertiary shipment estimates rather than a new Square Enix sales announcement.

Wishlist Threads of Time if its Unreal Engine 5 pixel-art worlds, four-person combat and Time Knights premise appeal to you and you are comfortable evaluating a promise rather than a finished product. Its stated influences are clear, but GameRant correctly cautioned that the influence should not be mistaken for a copycat game. The final story, balance, ending structure and performance remain unknown.
Consider Sea of Stars if you want another Canadian, already playable Chrono Trigger-inspired RPG while waiting. It is a related reference point, not a replacement for either title; it shipped, later received the Throes of the Watchmaker DLC and includes music from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda.
How we picked the comparison criteria
This comparison uses the factors that materially change a purchase or play decision: whether each game is available, how its combat is documented, party size, the role of time travel, confirmed eras and vehicles, visual approach, production context and replay tools. Chrono Trigger receives firm statements because it is finished. Threads of Time is described with “preview,” “reported” or “planned” wherever the evidence comes from marketing or pre-release coverage. No winner is assigned for Threads of Time’s story, soundtrack, length or balance because those aspects have not been published as finished-game results.
