The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a visual and archival upgrade, not a remake. It contains the same five-episode murder investigation, dialogue, choices, voice performances and comic-book direction as the 2013–14 release. The meaningful changes are a rebuild on a later Telltale Tool version, new character models and textures, a complete relighting pass, smoother modern-platform performance, optional black-and-white Noir Mode, five playable Lost Scenes, a large art gallery and more than an hour of interviews and making-of video. The upgrade is clearest in side-by-side stills and close-ups; it is less transformative when the original art is already familiar. For new players, the remaster is the practical starting point. Existing owners should decide whether those extras and the discounted price justify buying the story again.

Is The Wolf Among Us Remastered a remake or a remaster?
It is a remaster in the strict sense: the campaign is unchanged, while the presentation and bonus material have been rebuilt. Telltale game director Matt Saia said the team deliberately left the story, directorial choices and overall art style alone.

Bigby Wolf remains the sheriff investigating a murder in Fabletown, the hidden 1986 Manhattan community from Bill Willingham and Lan Medina’s Fables comics. Dialogue branches, relationship outcomes, investigation hotspots, timed choices and quick-time fights all follow the original design.
The remaster is therefore not a sixth episode, a rewritten continuity or a new interpretation of the comics. The five Lost Scenes are separate menu content, not part of a redesigned main campaign. The Wolf Among Us 2, planned for 2027, is a separate game.

What changed in the graphics?
The visual work goes well beyond increasing the output resolution. Telltale moved the project to the later Telltale Tool branch used for its Batman games, then rebuilt the visual assets around it.
New models, textures and shaders
Every character went through a new concept, high-end model and final in-game model. Saia described the new textures and models as multiple times more detailed than those in the 2013 release. Hair, clothing, facial structure and muscle definition receive the most obvious additional geometry, while costumes and silhouettes remain recognisable.
New shaders support materials that were difficult or impossible to sell in the old build. Glossy surfaces such as bottles catch light differently, and moving objects such as the ghost ship use updated line treatment. Comic-style black outlines remain part of the identity rather than being removed in favour of a realistic look.
Every scene was relit
Lighting was the largest technical task. The original combined baked lighting, real-time lights and hand-painted details. Once environments and materials changed, the old lighting could not simply be retained, so the team relit every scene.
That work changes mood and readability more than a basic texture pass would. In Faith and Lawrence’s apartment, the remaster adds the feel of decaying former luxury: richer furniture and a more elegant chair are now worn down, reflecting the relationship’s collapse. Other scenes gain sharper contrast, additional vegetation or objects and more dimensional backdrops; some locations that had been largely flat 2D images were rebuilt as 3D environments.
Bigby’s wolf form is the boldest redesign
Bigby’s transformed appearance is more feral and powerful, with a stronger sense of mass and aggression. It is still recognisably the same character, but it is the place where the remaster takes the most liberty with the original model.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why reviewers describe the difference differently
The apparently conflicting launch-week descriptions are both useful. GamingTrend called the side-by-side difference “night and day,” while GameSpot said the upgrade was not night and day because the original’s art direction was already strong. The practical synthesis is that close-ups, still comparisons, character faces and lighting show substantial work, but a returning player watching ordinary motion may not feel as if the entire game has been replaced.
Some of the new lighting can also look uneven. GamingTrend noted harsh daylight that seemed ill-suited to Bigby, while other reviews praised the cleaner environments and sharper materials. The remaster preserves the stylised look rather than pursuing photorealism, so its success depends on whether you value refinement or the exact visual memory of the original.

What is Noir Mode, and should you use it?
Noir Mode is an exclusive remaster option that turns the complete story black and white. A single toggle switches between the rebuilt colour presentation and the monochrome version at any time; it does not alter dialogue, choices or outcomes.
Saia designed it as a pure film-noir treatment, unlike the colour-accented Shadows Mode used in Batman. The darker shadows and removal of neon colour create a different mood that suits Fabletown’s detective premise. Press Play Media considered it more than a novelty, while noting that the colour-and-neon default remains the more distinctive look.

There are usability costs. HardZone reported that some quick-time-event prompts are harder to see, and GamingTrend found dialogue timers more difficult to parse in black and white. If you rely on fast visual separation during timed choices, the standard colour mode is safer. Noir Mode works best as a second playthrough or a photographic style rather than as a universal replacement.
What new story-adjacent content is included?
The remaster adds archival and production material without changing the shipped narrative.
Five Lost Scenes
Five recovered deleted scenes are playable from the menu. They include the Anderson Street Cleanup sequence after the Woodsman fight and an alternate ending that PlayStation LifeStyle identified as the standout. Saia said the Anderson Street material is fun but slows the pace and weakens the more intimate Faith-and-Bigby beat that made the final game.
These scenes are uneven by design. Reviews describe missing dialogue or visual elements, sliding characters and lower-quality models in places. They can also reveal situations that make more sense after the main episodes. Play the campaign first, then use the Lost Scenes as archival extras; do not expect a polished sixth episode.

Art gallery and video features
An art gallery contains more than 100 images, combining production material from more than 13 years ago with remaster character and location art created during roughly the last two years. The package also includes more than an hour of developer and cast interviews and making-of videos. PlayStation LifeStyle counted five substantial videos covering the original art, characters and remaster work, although GamingTrend observed flickering in the playback interface.
Additional restored material, developer commentary and hints of hidden Easter eggs round out the archive. These features matter most to players interested in how Telltale’s adaptation was built, rather than to someone buying solely for a different ending.

Interface, accessibility and audio
The remaster has an updated user interface and announced accessibility improvements, but Telltale has not published an itemised list of those options in the materials reviewed. Audio has been cleaned and remastered so voices come through more clearly in the rebuilt scenes.
Steam lists English voice acting with French, German and Latin American Spanish text. The Spanish localisation is Latin American rather than Spain Spanish and uses localised names such as Lupo Ferro for Bigby, which may sound unfamiliar to players who learned the English terminology.
How does performance compare with the original?
The original console editions were widely remembered for lag, hitching and low frame rates that could make timed sequences frustrating. The remaster is substantially smoother on contemporary hardware, especially on PC, but it does not eliminate every Telltale Tool quirk.
PC frame-rate reports
GamingTrend reported about 170 frames per second on a desktop at the reviewer’s monitor refresh rate and about 190 fps at 1440p on a Razer Blade 18, below that laptop’s 240Hz ceiling. HardZone reached a locked 240 fps at 3440×1440 on a high-end system with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 64GB of memory and a GeForce RTX 5080, with roughly 20–40% GPU and 20–25% CPU use.
Those figures are reports from specific systems, not a guaranteed target for every PC. They do show that the remaster is not especially GPU-heavy when paired with modern hardware.
What still feels rough
- Camera cuts can produce small hitches even when the frame-rate counter does not visibly fall.
- Texture streaming can fail briefly; PlayStation LifeStyle described familiar “Telltale jank” when textures do not load correctly.
- GamingTrend encountered a first-launch settings bug in which the mouse could not reach the resolution control.
- HardZone found only High and Low graphics presets on PC, rather than a detailed menu of individual effects.
- Ultrawide support is missing. At 3440×1440, fullscreen stretched the image in HardZone’s review; windowed mode was the workaround.
- Some inherited colour and lighting anomalies remain, including unnatural pink and whitish regions on Colin the pig.
- Movement and animation can still feel clunky. Reviewers generally treated that as retained Telltale character rather than a new regression.
Console-specific resolution and frame-rate caps have not been published. Do not assume that PS5 or Xbox runs at a particular 4K, 60Hz or 120Hz mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat PC hardware does the remaster require?
The Steam listing sets a low baseline for a modern release. Both minimum and recommended configurations list 8GB of RAM; the difference is the intended quality and frame rate.
| Target | Operating system | CPU | Memory | GPU | Stated goal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom II X4 910 | 8GB | GeForce GTX 470 1GB or Radeon HD 5870 1GB | 1080p, Low, 30 fps |
| Recommended | Windows 11 | Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 3 2300X | 8GB | GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB or Radeon RX 6400 4GB | 1080p, High, 60 fps |
The listed requirements are targets, not a promise of ultrawide behaviour or a fixed console-equivalent preset. A PC that meets the recommended specification should be aimed at the stated 1080p High/60 fps goal rather than at the 240 fps figures reported on enthusiast hardware.

Where can you play it, and when did it launch?
The digital remaster launched globally on 29 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox. The Xbox One SKU is playable on Xbox Series X|S. PC buyers can choose Steam or the Epic Games Store.
Nintendo Switch was delayed on 16 October 2026 and has no replacement date. Older previews that listed Switch for launch are out of date. When it arrives, it will be the series’ first Nintendo release. Physical editions are planned for the first quarter of 2027; the 29 October launch is digital.
How much does the remaster cost, and who gets a discount?
Telltale’s list price is $24.99. The launch offer runs from 29 October through 12 November 2026.
| Buyer | Discount | Conditions | Approximate USD price |
|---|---|---|---|
| New buyer on Steam, Epic Games Store or Xbox | 20% | Launch window only: 29 Oct–12 Nov 2026 | $19.99 |
| New buyer on PS5 | 20% | PlayStation Plus required during the launch offer | $19.99 |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy the remaster if you own the original?
The answer depends on whether you want presentation and archive material or simply the finished story.
Buy it at the owner price if you want the following
- Rebuilt models, sharper textures and relit scenes on a current console or PC.
- A smoother experience than the old console editions.
- Noir Mode for an alternate visual presentation.
- Five Lost Scenes, including an alternate ending and production leftovers.
- The gallery, interviews, making-of videos and restored material.
- A convenient complete package rather than an episodic purchase history.
Keep the original if these points describe you
- You already finished the campaign and do not care about archival extras.
- You prefer the exact 2013–14 lighting and texture balance.
- Your existing copy runs acceptably on the hardware you use.
- You are waiting for a physical edition or a future Switch release.
GameSpot’s assessment is the clearest warning against an automatic repurchase: the original remains available on storefronts, and the remaster is not essential when the extras do not interest you. The 50% digital-owner price changes that calculation for fans who do want the new material, but it does not turn the package into a rewritten game.

Which version should a new player start with?
Start with the remaster if you have a compatible PC, PS5 or Xbox. It is sold as one complete five-episode package, includes the modern visual rebuild and avoids the original’s episodic purchasing history. The updated presentation and extras are the most convenient way to experience the story before The Wolf Among Us 2 arrives.
Play the five main episodes in release order before opening the Lost Scenes. Keep Noir Mode for a second run if timed dialogue readability matters to you. On PC, use the recommended hardware target as a 1080p High/60 fps expectation, and use windowed mode if an ultrawide display stretches the fullscreen image.

How does the original fit into the series’ history?
The original launched episodically over nine months: Faith on 11 October 2013 and Cry Wolf on 8 July 2014, with the three intervening episodes released between them. It was Telltale’s licensed prequel to Fables, which began in 2002 and ran through 2015, with a short-lived return in 2022.
Contemporary aggregate scores for the original were 83 on PS4, 83 on Xbox 360 and 80 on PC. Period praise focused on atmosphere, writing and art direction, while pacing and technical problems drew criticism. The original Telltale studio largely ceased operations in 2018; the remaster comes from the revived Telltale under LCG Entertainment with PM Studios.

How we compared the two versions
The comparison weighs the areas that materially change a purchase decision: story and choice continuity, model and lighting work, frame-rate behaviour, PC requirements, technical limitations, new archival content, platform availability and the launch discount. Performance figures are identified as reports from named launch-week outlets on particular hardware, not as independent measurements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play the remaster without reading the Fables comics?
Yes. The game establishes Fabletown, glamours and the Farm through its own dialogue and investigations. The comics add background and character context, but they are not required to follow Bigby’s case.
Are the Lost Scenes available during the normal episode flow?
They are selected from a separate menu rather than inserted into the five episodes. That keeps the shipped pacing intact and lets you avoid scenes that may spoil later developments.
Does the remaster include a physical disc at launch?
No. The 29 October 2026 release is digital on PC, PS5 and Xbox. Physical editions are planned for the first quarter of 2027, with platform-specific details still to be announced.
Will my old choices automatically carry into The Wolf Among Us 2?
Telltale has said remaster progress will affect the sequel, but no confirmed method has been published for importing saves from the 2013–14 release. Do not buy either version on the assumption that an old save will be recognised.
