Most armor in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt cannot be dyed: the game limits dyeing to eligible Witcher gear. If the option is missing, first check whether the item is eligible, then make sure you have a finished dye and are applying it to the armor you actually equip. In the next-gen/Reforge context, a cosmetic appearance may not be the item the dye affects.

Do I have a finished dye or just a crafting ingredient?
A finished color dye is the item used to recolor armor. Dye solution and an item named Dye are materials, not interchangeable color applications: dye solution is used to make armor dyes, while the ordinary Dye component is documented separately.
Read the item name and description in your inventory. Owning a dye ingredient does not mean you have a finished color ready to apply. If the item is a material, use the relevant dye recipe when available; if it is a finished dye, try it on an eligible Witcher gear item.

Does the dye system require Blood and Wine?
The armor-dye content is associated with the Blood and Wine expansion, which adds dye colors, dye solution, and recipes such as Black armor dye. If you are playing without that expansion, do not assume that ordinary base-game armor has a dye feature waiting to be unlocked.
Expansion context and item eligibility are separate checks: having access to dye content does not make every armor piece dyeable. The item still needs to qualify under the Witcher gear restriction.

Why does dye affect my equipped armor but not my Reforge appearance?
In the next-gen/Reforge context, distinguish the armor item you own and equip from the cosmetic appearance layered over it. The available Reforge guide reports that dyes apply to the equipped armor, not automatically to the reforged appearance. Treat this as a version-specific edge case rather than a universal statement about every cosmetic setup.
If the result looks unchanged, verify which physical armor item received the dye instead of assuming that the displayed appearance itself was recolored. Reforge appearance and dye application are not necessarily the same operation.

Why do some parts stay a different color?
A valid dye does not guarantee that every surface on a model will take the color uniformly. CD PROJEKT RED’s REDkit documentation says, “Not all meshes support coloring.” That statement comes from documentation for the development tool, not a complete guide to every retail-game dye interaction, but it supports the practical possibility that certain details, materials, or model areas remain visually different.
So, if the armor changed in part, that does not by itself mean the dye failed. The model may contain areas that do not support coloring.
