For a large Steam Deck library, buy a genuine 1TB UHS-I microSDXC card marked A2, U3 and V30. The SanDisk Extreme 1TB, Samsung PRO Plus 1TB and Lexar Play 1TB are the safest starting points; choose 2TB only if you strongly prefer never uninstalling games. Steam Deck’s reader is UHS-I, so labels advertising 190, 205 or 245 MB/s do not make games load at those speeds. Capacity, random-performance ratings and seller authenticity matter more.
A good card is slower than the internal NVMe SSD, but the difference is usually measured in seconds rather than a different class of machine. The guide below covers capacity, ratings, current card choices, formatting, moving games and the traps that cause lost libraries.

How much microSD capacity do you need for Steam Deck games?
Choose 1TB for a genuinely large library, 512GB for a moderate one and 2TB only when deleting or swapping games is unacceptable. Published “games per card” estimates vary because an indie-heavy library and a modern AAA library have radically different install sizes, so use actual gigabytes as your planning unit.
| Capacity | Practical fit | Examples and published estimates |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | Light or indie-heavy library | Switchblade Gaming estimates 15–25 games; PCBuildHelper estimates 8–12 indies or only a few AAA games. |
| 512GB | Reasonable starting point | Switchblade estimates 30–50 mixed games and PCBuildHelper about 15–20. PCGamesN warns that three large titles can nearly fill it. |
| 1TB | Large-library sweet spot | Switchblade estimates 60–100 smaller or mixed games; PCBuildHelper estimates about 25–30 larger mixed titles. |
| 2TB | Collector or “never uninstall” capacity | Useful for many simultaneous AAA installs, but often poor value compared with two 1TB cards. |
For scale, Switchblade Gaming and FutureTweets put Baldur’s Gate 3 at roughly 150GB including shader cache, while Switchblade lists Elden Ring at around 60GB. PCGamesN says a 512GB card may hold Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows only just before it fills. Leave headroom for updates and shader caches rather than planning to use every advertised gigabyte.

What SD card ratings actually matter on a Steam Deck?
The useful label combination is UHS-I, A2, U3 and V30. Everything else is secondary because the Deck’s host interface, not the box’s maximum sequential number, sets the ceiling.
UHS-I sets the speed ceiling
Valve lists a high-speed microSD slot on every LCD and OLED model and specifies UHS-I supporting SD, SDXC and SDHC in its OLED specifications and LCD specifications. The SD Association’s UHS-I bus reaches 104MB/s in SDR104 mode. A card advertised at 190, 205 or 245MB/s can achieve that figure only in a compatible external reader; it does not make the Steam Deck transfer at that rate.

Application Performance Class A2 specifies at least 4,000 random-read IOPS and 2,000 random-write IOPS, versus A1’s 1,500 and 500. Random access matters because games load thousands of small files. Eurogamer’s Will Judd explains that A2 is preferred where available because its minimum random-read performance is aimed at reducing load times.
U3 and V30 cover sustained writes
U3 and V30 each promise a minimum sustained write speed of 30MB/s. That matters during game installs, patches and shader-cache work. Valve’s support wording that “class 3 or better” cards are supported aligns with U3. V30 overlaps U3 for this use, but seeing both marks on the label makes the product class unambiguous.
Which Steam Deck microSD cards are best for a large library?
The ranking below favors capacity, A2 random performance, U3/V30 labeling, warranty and trustworthy distribution. Sequential claims are reported as the manufacturers’ ratings and remain subject to the Deck’s 104MB/s bus limit.
1. Samsung PRO Plus — best overall
PRO Plus combines A2, U3 and V30 with rated reads up to 180MB/s and writes up to 130MB/s. Samsung gives it a 10-year limited warranty and six-proof protection claims: water resistance (including a 72-hour seawater claim), temperature resistance from −13°F to 185°F, X-ray and magnetic resistance, drop resistance to 16.4 feet and wear-out protection. Roundups list capacities from 256GB through 1TB in 2026, with one later listing also showing 1.5TB.
The 1TB version closes the old capacity gap and is the sensible PRO Plus size for a large library. Pick 512GB when the library is moderate or the price is substantially lower.

2. SanDisk Extreme 1TB — the default high-capacity choice
SanDisk Extreme is labeled A2, U3 and V30 and has a lifetime limited warranty. The commonly listed 1TB SKU SDSQXAV-1T00-GN6MA is rated up to 190MB/s read and 130MB/s write. Some newer labels advertise 245MB/s, so identify the exact SKU instead of treating 160, 190 and 245MB/s figures as one specification.
Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof and X-ray-proof claims add useful protection for a removable card. Buy the 1TB model from the brand or an authorized major retailer; counterfeit high-capacity cards are a more serious risk than a small difference in sequential speed.
3. Lexar Play 1TB or 2TB — best value when capacity dominates
Lexar Play is designed for portable gaming and carries A2 and V30 markings. Play cards are commonly rated at 160MB/s read, although some batches advertise up to 205MB/s. A five-year warranty is typical, shorter than Samsung’s or SanDisk’s headline coverage.
The 1TB Play is a strong value alternative. The 2TB Play is the most straightforward single-card route for collectors who do not want to uninstall games. Check the exact packaging and warranty terms because Play and Play Blue naming appears in different regional listings.
4. SanDisk Extreme Pro — only for fraction-of-a-second gains
Rock Paper Shotgun’s Steam Deck timings put Extreme Pro slightly ahead of other cards. In its published tests, Extreme Pro averaged 10.3 seconds to launch Aperture Desk Job and 3.3 seconds to load it, versus 10.9 and 3.4 seconds for Samsung PRO Plus. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Extreme Pro recorded 14.3 seconds to launch and 15.6 seconds to load, only fractions ahead of the Deck’s 15.9-second SSD result cited by that comparison.
That advantage is real in the cited measurements but too small to justify a large premium for most libraries. Choose it when the price is close to Extreme or PRO Plus, not because its external-reader speed is higher.
5. SanDisk Ultra — capacity on a strict budget
Ultra cards reach capacities up to 1.5TB and are usually A1/U1 rather than A2/U3/V30. Rock Paper Shotgun found read-bound game loads surprisingly close to premium cards, but slower writes make bulk installs and patches less pleasant. It is a reasonable dump card when price per gigabyte is the overriding concern, not the recommended performance specification for a large active library.

6. Amazon Basics A2 — inexpensive 256GB or 512GB
Eurogamer’s US price snapshots on 14 January 2026 listed the 256GB model at $29.05 and the 512GB model at $49.99, with an A2 label and a listed 200MB/s maximum. Those prices are historical and the 2026 NAND shortage makes them volatile. This is a budget option for 256GB or 512GB; do not generalize it to anonymous 1TB or 2TB listings with implausibly low prices.
Other credible alternatives
Kingston Canvas Go! Plus offers A2, V30 and capacities up to 1TB. PNY Pro Elite/Pro Elite Prime and Integral Momentum appear in UK value recommendations; Eurogamer listed a 1.5TB PNY Pro Elite at £159 and a 1TB Integral Momentum (A2, listed at 210MB/s) at £109.95 on 14 January 2026. These are fallback choices when the three main brands are badly priced, provided the label and seller are genuine.
How close are microSD load times to the internal SSD?
A good A2 card is slower than the internal NVMe drive, but published comparisons show a modest rather than transformational gap. Rock Paper Shotgun recorded the Samsung PRO Plus at 10.9 seconds for an Aperture Desk Job launch and 16 seconds for a Shadow of the Tomb Raider load; SanDisk Ultra recorded 11.1 and 16.3 seconds in the same comparison.
Switchblade Gaming’s 2026 reproduction of a How-To Geek comparison measured the internal SSD, a Samsung EVO Plus marked U3/A2 and a SanDisk Ultra marked U1/A1 as follows:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Game | Internal SSD | Samsung EVO Plus (U3/A2) | SanDisk Ultra (U1/A1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rollerdrome | 4.75s | 5.35s | 5.6s |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 21.7s | 26.2s | 27.0s |
| Days Gone | 22.2s | 32.9s | 29.9s |
The SSD-to-card difference ranged from about 0.6 seconds to about 10 seconds in those titles, while the A2/U3 and A1/U1 cards were less than a second apart in some tests. Keep hitch-sensitive competitive games or heavily streaming open worlds on the internal SSD when space allows; store less I/O-intensive RPGs and your backlog on the card.
Can a Steam Deck use a 2TB microSD card?
Yes. Valve does not publish a maximum capacity on its technical-specification pages, but 2TB is the ceiling of the microSDXC family and 2026 guides report 2TB SanDisk Extreme and Lexar Play cards working in both LCD and OLED Decks. Treat that as reported compatibility rather than a first-party Valve capacity guarantee.
Value is the bigger question. PCGamesN notes that 2TB cards can cost more than twice a 1TB card, and two 1TB cards may be cheaper. Two cards also let you separate games by genre or keep a backup library, although swapping cards requires shutting down or following safe-removal practice.

How do you format a microSD card for Steam Deck?
SteamOS must format the card as ext4 with casefolding. Formatting erases everything on the card, so copy off any files first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Insert the card into the slot on the Deck’s bottom edge.
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card.
- Confirm the warning and wait; Valve says formatting may take a few minutes.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage. The card should appear as a library location after formatting.
- Press Y to move selected software between internal storage and the card, or press X to set the default install location.
For an already installed title, use Settings > Storage > Move. In Desktop Mode, Steam’s library-folder controls can manage a mixture of internal, microSD and USB storage, but the game card itself should remain in SteamOS’s ext4 format.
Can the same Steam Deck card be used in Windows or a Nintendo Switch?
Not without reformatting. Steam Deck’s ext4-with-casefolding filesystem is not natively readable by Windows or Nintendo Switch, and reformatting for either platform destroys the Steam library on the card. FAT32 also cannot hold files larger than 4GiB, while exFAT is not the correct format for a Steam Deck game library.
Use separate cards for a Switch and Deck. If you need to transfer files between systems, use a separate exFAT USB drive rather than changing the game card’s filesystem.
Which cards and labels should you avoid?
- UHS-II, UHS-III, V60 and V90 bought for speed: Valve says their higher transfer rates are unsupported. UHS-II’s second pin row is not used for extra throughput in the Deck.
- microSD Express: Express cards use PCIe/NVMe, but a non-Express UHS-I host makes them fall back to the host’s speed. Pay for Express only if another device will exploit it.
- No-name 1TB or 2TB cards priced far below established brands: Fake-capacity cards can report a large size, then overwrite data once the real flash is exhausted.
- Cards without A2 and U3/V30 markings: They may work, but you lose the clearest guarantees for random access and sustained writes.
- Ambiguous EVO Select listings: One 2026 table labels a 512GB EVO Select A2/U3/V30, while the quoted Amazon title for SKU MB-ME512SA/AM says U1/V10/A1. Recommend it only when the physical label on that exact SKU says A2.
What do Steam Deck microSD cards cost in 2026?
Prices are unusually unstable because of the NAND flash shortage. Rock Paper Shotgun reported that some models had nearly tripled year over year, and SD Card Checker described increases across capacities. Treat the dated figures below as snapshots, not current quotes.
| Region and date | Card and capacity | Price | Approximate cost per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| US, 14 Jan 2026 | Amazon Basics 256GB | $29.05 | 11¢ |
| US, 14 Jan 2026 | Amazon Basics 512GB | $49.99 | 10¢ |
| US, 14 Jan 2026 | Lexar Blue 1TB | $104.99 | 10¢ |
| US, 14 Jan 2026 | SanDisk Extreme 2TB | $279.89 | 14¢ |
| UK, 14 Jan 2026 | Lexar Blue 512GB | £35.99 | 9p |
| UK, 14 Jan 2026 | Integral Momentum 1TB | £109.95 | 11p |
| UK, 14 Jan 2026 | Lexar Play Blue 2TB | £172.09 | 9p |
Before buying, compare the current price of one 2TB card with two 1TB cards. During a shortage, the latter can provide the same total capacity for less money. If your internal SSD has enough free space, postponing the purchase and uninstalling games you are not playing can also be rational; the recommendation here assumes you explicitly want a large installed library.
How do you avoid counterfeit cards and recover from common problems?
The Deck does not see the card
Power the Deck down, remove and reinsert the card, then check Settings > System > Format SD Card. If SteamOS still cannot format it, test the card in another reader and contact the seller; do not trust a capacity report from an unknown marketplace listing.

Installs or patches are unusually slow
Confirm that the card is U3/V30 and that Steam is installing to the intended library location. Sustained writes are where U1 cards and counterfeit flash show their weakness. Keep several gigabytes free so updates and shader caches have working space.
Games disappear after removing the card
This is expected: ejecting the card hides its library from Steam. Reinsert it and restart Steam if necessary; the installed games should return without re-downloading.

The advertised capacity seems too good to be true
Buy from the manufacturer’s store or a major authorized retailer, retain the receipt and verify the exact capacity soon after purchase using a full write-and-read verification tool on a computer. A fake card can display 2TB in software while containing much less flash, causing silent overwrites and data loss.
How were these cards selected?
The ranking gives priority to the needs of a large installed library: 1TB or 2TB availability, A2 random-performance labeling, U3/V30 sustained-write ratings, compatibility with the Deck’s UHS-I slot, warranty length, price per usable gigabyte after the bus cap and confidence in seller authenticity. Published load figures are included only as the named publications’ measurements; no new benchmark is implied. Cards whose headline speed requires UHS-II or Express hardware receive no benefit on a standard Steam Deck.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Steam Deck OLED read microSD cards faster than the LCD model?
No. Both generations use the same UHS-I microSD interface, so OLED’s display, battery, Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 changes do not raise card throughput. A faster card therefore cannot unlock a higher bus speed on OLED.
Will a faster microSD card speed up every Steam Deck game?
No. Sequential ratings above roughly 104MB/s are capped by the slot, and game performance also depends on random access and the title’s own loading pattern. A2 cards can reduce file-heavy waits, but the internal NVMe drive remains the fastest location.
How should I split games between two 1TB cards?
Use Steam’s Storage page to make each card its own library, then keep one inserted at a time. Grouping by genre, installed versus backlog, or single-player versus multiplayer makes swaps predictable; games on the absent card simply appear uninstalled until it is reinserted.
Can a Steam Deck boot from a microSD card?
Yes. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ states that boot from microSD is supported. Boot media and a normal Steam game library still require the card to be formatted for the intended use, so do not reformat a game card casually.
