Published coverage gives a more grounded battery expectation than the manufacturer rating: Time Extension’s figure, cited by Gear Receipts and VGKami in October 2026, is seven to eight hours of play per charge. The official store listing showed 362 five-star reviews out of 441 total, or 82%, in 2026; that is a snapshot of customer ratings, not a compatibility test.
The compromises are important: the SP has no analog stick, and its buttons are clicky. Gear Receipts flags the sound as a potential nuisance for quiet shared spaces. The smaller RG35XX H has the same H700 chip and a 3.5-inch 640×480 screen in a 180 g body measuring 145 × 69 × 16 mm. Choose it when compact horizontal handling matters more than the larger display. Both H models provide sticks for games that benefit from analog movement or camera control.
Pick by the games you play most
- Mostly NES, SNES, and 2D PS1: RG35XX SP for a protected screen; RG40XX H for a larger display and sticks.

For the RG34XX, the 3× integer-scale match is a concrete advantage for GBA, not a claim that every system looks best on 3:2. NES, SNES, and most PS1 content is a more natural fit on 4:3. Yes. Original PlayStation is a practical upper target for the H700 Linux handhelds, including the RG35XX SP. Published coverage reports PS1 running well on the SP, while Electro Arcade describes the H700 line’s compatibility as covering the majority of the PS1 library; demanding 3D games may need frameskip or resolution adjustments.
For games built around 3D movement or camera control, two sticks can make a real difference. The RG35XX SP has none, so it is less convenient for those titles than the RG35XX H, RG40XX H, RG40XX V, RG CubeXX, or RG34XX SP. Stickless models can map the directional pad to analog input, but Electro Arcade reports mixed results. Do not read a competitor’s PS1 figure as an ANBERNIC test: RetroHandheldHQ’s reported 90–95% full-speed figure is for the Miyoo Mini Plus, not an H700 device.
The RG34XX is another option for PS1 as well as GBA. Pocket Retro Gamer’s synthesis of coverage from Retro Dodo and Retro Handhelds reports the full PS1 library at full speed via DuckStation on that model, including examples such as Final Fantasy VII, Symphony of the Night, and Crash Bandicoot. That is a reported model-specific assessment, not an official ANBERNIC compatibility percentage; ANBERNIC does not publish a single percentage covering PS1 or the 8- and 16-bit systems across the XX line.
Is Linux or Android the right ANBERNIC for these games?
Linux is the sensible tier for NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, and PS1. The XX models in this comparison use an Allwinner H700 quad-core Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz, Mali-G31 MP2 graphics, 1 GB of RAM, and 64-bit Linux. For this library, paying for an Android model’s extra performance mostly buys capability you have not asked for.

Electro Arcade’s 24 October 2026 guide describes the wider H700 range as running arcade systems, Mega Drive/Genesis including 32X, Master System, Game Gear, PC Engine, Atari 2600, MSX, and WonderSwan at full speed. That broader capability does not mean every system beyond PS1 is equally reliable: N64 is title-dependent, PSP works better for lighter-to-midweight games than demanding games such as God of War or Tekken 6, and Dreamcast and Saturn support is limited or marginal. GameCube and PS2 are outside this chip’s intended tier; those are reasons to consider an Android model, not reasons to buy one for a NES-to-PS1 library.
One notable limitation is Nintendo DS: button-only games can be playable, but games that rely on a touchscreen stylus are not viable without that input. PSP games also have a 16:9 shape, so they show bars on the 4:3 screens; the RG34XX’s 3:2 panel is a closer match, though it is still not 16:9.
What do ANBERNIC model numbers mean?

- RG is the product line; the digits generally indicate screen size, such as 3.5 inches for RG35XX and 4.0 inches for RG40XX. The third digit denotes a generation or variant, not a screen measurement.
- XX identifies the H700 Linux family discussed here. Examples include RG34XX, RG35XX, RG40XX, and RG CubeXX.
- H means horizontal in models such as RG35XX H and RG40XX H; V means vertical, as in RG40XX V; SP indicates a clamshell design.
- Cube signals the square-screen form. Plus and Pro are revised versions within a size family, not a guarantee that the device is in a different performance class.
Android names such as RG406V, RG556, RG557, RG476H, or RG Cube without the XX suffix belong to a different, more powerful and generally more expensive group. For the systems in this guide, focus on the XX form factor you prefer.

Confirm a firmware image matches the exact model and version before installing it.
Pay attention to the card arrangement on 16 GB configurations. ANBERNIC says that after installing the operating system on the 16 GB card, you cannot expand that card or put ROMs on it; use the second TF slot for games. Some ready-to-play retail bundles advertise a 64 GB card with 4,301 games, according to Electro Arcade, but a bundle’s contents are not a license to use those games. Back up anything you need before replacing or reformatting a card.
Use a suitable charger and check the device label
Charging advice for this family conflicts, so check the label on your own handheld before connecting a charger. Official RG35XX SP, RG34XX, RG40XX H, and RG CubeXX listings specify 5V/1.5A and say C-to-C charging is supported. Electro Arcade’s H700 guide instead advises 5V/1A–5V/2A USB-A-to-USB-C charging and warns against USB-C-to-USB-C or USB Power Delivery fast chargers because high-voltage negotiation can be a failure mode on this hardware class. The device label takes priority; do not assume a modern phone charger is safe just because its connector fits.

Also avoid choosing solely by the biggest screen or newest name. The 4-inch RG40XX H is an excellent 4:3 all-rounder but not a better GBA fit than the 3:2 RG34XX; the RG CubeXX is distinctive for Game Boy pixels but is not the natural SNES choice. An SP clamshell protects its screen while closed, yet hinge wear is a trade-off to consider over time, and its clicky buttons may be unwelcome in a quiet room.
