To attract more animals in The Regreening, clear junk, repair the soil, plant a useful mix of synergistic species, maintain water, then place the matching habitat marker only after its vegetation, food, safety and rest requirements are met. Planting by itself does not summon wildlife: every habitat occupies surrounding grid tiles, so borders must also leave enough room for neighboring species.
This loop is already playable in the free Steam demo for PC. The full game is planned for 7 December 2026, but habitat recipes, yields and restoration values can still change before release. The species and advice below therefore describe the confirmed demo and preview systems rather than a guaranteed complete launch bestiary.

Animals return when a species habitat is placed on land whose ecological connections are strong enough. The game replaces a money-making farm loop with restoration: you collect seeds, improve biodiversity and create shelter, food and healthy ground so wildlife can live there. Creative director Manny Hachey told PC Gamer that the team removed currency and profit-focused planting and harvesting; a tree might instead improve soil, retain water, shelter an animal or help a biome spread.
Each successful introduction follows the same broad sequence:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Clear the tile. Remove scrap with the mattock so plants can take root. Junk becomes crafting material.
- Prepare soil and water. Hard, dry ground rejects seeds. Hand-water first, then improve retention and irrigation as those systems become available.
- Plant for habitat functions. Use discovered seeds and plant synergies to provide vegetation, food, shelter, safer ground and biome spread rather than a sale crop.
- Check the habitat readout. Place the wooden silhouette sign and inspect the vegetation, food, safety and rest-space indicators plus the web of environmental connections.
- Fit the borders. A habitat claims surrounding grid tiles. Leave a workable arrangement when two species, such as rabbits and foxes, need overlapping territory.
- Feed and gift. Flowers and berries can be harvested for replanting or gifts. The demo tutorial specifically requires nearby flowers for butterflies.
- Follow the next unlock. Story objects, quests, crafting recipes and new maps open additional species and habitat types.
There are no shipping deadlines or failure timers. Problems are ecological: plants dry out, soil remains unfit, or habitat borders leave an animal without enough usable space.
How do I prepare land before placing a habitat?
Prepare the ground before you spend a habitat recipe. The order matters because seeds cannot spread roots through hard soil, and a sign cannot compensate for missing vegetation or water.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep the mattock available. Use it to clear the scrap-strewn starting terrain. The tool is central to opening planting cells and turning debris into materials.
- Water the cleared cells. Hand watering is the initial solution. Green, softened soil is the visual sign that a cell can support growth; PC Gamer’s demo coverage describes watered soil turning green over roughly a day while flowers grow in real time.
- Plant a complementary mix. Discover seeds through exploration and quests. Read each plant’s role as part of a system: one may improve soil, another retain moisture, another provide food or shelter, and another extend a biome.
- Use retention and irrigation upgrades. Straw mulch, halfmoon berms, irrigation bottles and hand-pump wells reduce the burden of keeping a large habitat area wet. Their crafting costs and balance were adjusted during the 2026 demo patches.
- Watch the map’s restoration progress. Rain is unlocked through the World Restoration bar separately on each map. Unlocking rain in Earthbound Plains does not make it rain in the Junkyard.
Decorations and upcycled furniture make a restored area feel lived in, but they do not replace the plants, water or habitat marker that wildlife needs.
What does the habitat UI require?
When you select a habitat marker, the game shows whether the proposed site has the ecological connections that species needs. The public demo does not publish numeric caps, radii or minimum values, so use the indicators and the surrounding layout rather than a fixed online formula.
| Indicator | What to provide | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetation | Healthy plants suited to the local biome | Clear enough cells, soften the soil and allow plants to mature |
| Food | Species-appropriate plants or other food sources | For butterflies, keep flowers within their usable range |
| Safety | A layout where the animal has defensible space | Do not let a neighboring predator range consume the whole area |
| Rest space | Safe bedding or resting ground | Reserve part of the habitat instead of filling every cell with food plants |
| Environmental connections | The combined web of soil, plants, water and habitat links | Read the spiderweb display before confirming placement |
A rabbit example shown in announce footage includes vegetation types, food sources, safety and rest space. The same kind of connected-stat view is used for other animals. If one strand is weak, improve the underlying plants or water first; moving the sign alone does not fix the cause.
How should I manage rabbit and fox habitat overlap?
Rabbit and fox ranges are the clearest example of habitat borders being a design constraint. Both signs claim surrounding tiles, so placing them too close can produce an attractive-looking layout that fails one species’ safety or usable-space requirement.

Place the first habitat with expansion in mind
Do not fill every adjacent hex around the first sign. Leave a corridor or open tiles where the second animal’s range can fit, and keep enough vegetation and rest ground inside both areas. The game is built on a hexagonal grid; each hex is divided into three pentagonal sub-cells and supports three seeds or plants, so a single apparently open hex may already be fully committed.
Use the readout after every move
Check the spiderweb and habitat borders after planting and again after placing a sign. If a fox habitat reduces rabbit safety, shift the sign or redesign the shared edge rather than deleting all the plants. A productive overlap is one in which both species retain their required food, safety and rest indicators.
Separate ecological functions
Put food-rich plants where the relevant animal can reach them, keep bedding or rest cells away from the most contested edge, and use shelter or soil-improving plants to strengthen weak links. The game does not publish a universal tile radius, so the visible border is the authority for your current map and build.
How do I attract each confirmed animal?
Rabbits
Clear and soften a meadow, grow the vegetation shown by the rabbit readout, add food and reserve safe rest space, then place the rabbit silhouette sign. Recheck the border if you later add a fox habitat; the demo specifically shows these two ranges needing careful tuning.

Foxes use the same habitat-stat style of placement, but their range competes with rabbit territory. Build the fox site only after you have identified a border arrangement that leaves both animals with adequate safety and usable space.
Butterflies
The Earthbound book contains the butterfly habitat recipe. Once the recipe is available, clear and water the ground, place the habitat and keep flowering plants nearby. The in-demo tutorial explicitly says butterflies need flowers for food; if the flower bed is outside the habitat border, the food connection will not help.

Crows
Crows are tied to a craftable object rather than a generic purchase. Find, craft and place Crow Habitats; the 1 October 2026 demo notes call out Corvelia as especially pleased when they return. The announce footage’s crow-feet surveying sequence is a traversal feature, not a substitute for the habitat recipe.
Frogs
Steam’s store description depicts frogs returning to singing wetlands as restoration advances. That confirms the wetland fantasy, but the public notes do not document a frog habitat recipe or numeric requirement. Treat frogs as a restoration outcome shown in marketing, not as a fully documented step-by-step unlock.
Which watering and soil tools keep habitats alive?
Use the simplest method early, then combine retention, storage and weather as your restored area grows. The following comparison reflects the October 2026 demo systems; costs and balance can change.
| Method | When it helps | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hand watering | First cleared plots and small repairs | Requires repeated trips as the planted area expands |
| Irrigation bottle | Portable, repeatable watering between plots | The Next Fest patch fixed accidental removal and unfillable bottles; crafting was made cheaper |
| Straw mulch | Improving moisture retention around plants | It supports water management but does not replace suitable soil or habitat stats |
| Halfmoon berm | Holding water around a planting area | Its cost was reduced in demo balancing; placement still consumes terrain |
| Hand-pump well | Supplying a dependable local water source | A save/load issue was fixed in the Next Fest patch |
| Unlocked rain | Maintaining a map after World Restoration progress | Rain is map-specific; after unlocking, it is intended to arrive about every other day, not on demand |
Weather also includes sunny days, gentle rain, heavy rain and dust storms. Patch notes say dust storms should not occur every day, and mature plants were made less demanding after complaints that they dried too quickly. If a habitat suddenly weakens, inspect soil moisture before replacing a healthy plant.
How do quests, spirits and new maps unlock more species?
New animals are gated by progression, not by buying livestock. Quests reward seeds and abilities that open later areas, while folklore spirits grant powerful abilities in exchange for help and occasional shiny objects. Studio material frames the spirits through European folklore; later descriptions emphasize Baltic mythology, so the game’s mythic layer should not be reduced to a single national tradition.
Earthbound Plains
This is where the core planting and habitat loop is easiest to learn. The Earthbound book’s butterfly recipe is an early example of a story item turning ecological knowledge into a new species opportunity.

The Junkyard
The demo expands into the Junkyard, where clearing debris and converting scrap into materials become especially important. Rain must be restored separately here even if it is already available in Earthbound Plains.
The Gorge and Cave
The Gorge appears as a later sneak peek and the Cave has been updated in the demo. Their presence signals additional habitat and exploration progression, but no complete public species list or numeric habitat table has been released for these areas.
Relationships and campfires
Evening campfire bonding depends on relationships with non-player characters. It belongs to the social and spirit layer rather than habitat statistics, but completing those relationships can be part of the broader route to quests, abilities and new planting options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do weather and World Restoration affect a 100% regreened map?
World Restoration rewards are awarded per map and can be claimed once on that map. Prioritize the restoration bar when a new region opens: its rewards can unlock rain or other abilities that make a large habitat network sustainable.
A fully regreened map is possible after later balancing, but reaching 100 percent is not the same as filling every cell with plants. Preserve open space for habitat borders, rest areas and future species. The Flora Compendium helps track discovered plants, while Viri’s improved growth-ability radius accelerates greenery spread without counting as an animal habitat itself.
Playtest updates added dynamic weather, outdoor decorations, the upcycled furniture set and the Hazel bush. These systems make a region feel more alive, but only living plants, water and valid habitat connections determine whether an animal can settle.

Why is my habitat not filling?
When a silhouette sign remains incomplete, diagnose the missing connection instead of repeatedly moving it.
- Seeds will not plant: clear remaining scrap and water the hard ground before trying again.
- Food is low: add the plant type shown by the habitat readout. For butterflies, place flowering plants inside the usable range.
- Safety or rest is low: reserve bedding and shelter cells; do not devote the entire border to food plants.
- The border is crowded: count the surrounding claimed tiles and redesign the shared edge, especially between rabbits and foxes.
- Plants keep drying: add mulch, berms, a well or bottle, and check whether rain has been unlocked on this specific map.
- A recipe is missing: search story items, complete relevant quests, craft the named habitat or enter the next map. Animals are not purchased from a shop.
- Progress feels slow: flowers and other plants grow in real time. Give watered soil time to turn green and mature rather than rebuilding immediately.
Because official numeric thresholds are not public and demo balancing is ongoing, a failed placement is best solved by reading the current in-game indicators rather than relying on a fixed tile-radius guide.

The public PC demo was live from 1 October 2026 and featured in Steam Next Fest from 19–26 October. It includes more than 15 new crafting ingredients, the Earthbound Plains and Junkyard progression, a Gorge glimpse and the updated Cave. The demo supports 11 languages; the full Steam listing shows 12 interface languages, adding Traditional Chinese.
The full PC release is scheduled for 7 December 2026. Steam lists Windows 10, an Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280X 3 GB, DirectX 11 and 2 GB of storage as minimum requirements. Since recipes, habitat yields, blooming cycles and restoration values received balancing passes during the demo, expect exact numbers and possibly the roster to change before version 1.0.
The studio describes the project as a women-led Hamburg team founded in 2024, with five founders and a six-person team listing. Its stated design goal is to bring back dozens of species, but no official complete 1.0 animal count has been published.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many animal species will The Regreening have at launch?
There is no complete official 1.0 bestiary or fixed species count yet. Gamecity Hamburg describes the design goal as “dozens of species,” which is an order-of-magnitude target rather than a confirmed roster.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I delete the mattock if my inventory is full?
Keep it: demo patch notes specifically warn players not to delete the mattock because it is needed to clear terrain. If space is tight, use or store other materials instead of discarding this tool.
Can I turn off Grandma Laima’s tutorial advice?
Yes. The updated Quest Journal includes a setting to disable Grandma Laima’s tips, so you can keep the restoration objectives while removing the guidance prompts.
Are animal arrivals tied to a deadline or missed-day penalty?
No. The game has no shipping timer or daily failure condition for habitats. You can repair soil, water plants and redesign borders at your own pace.
