For most newcomers who want an actively updated co-op game and expanding endgame content, start with The Division 2. Choose the original The Division if you want to experience its earlier outbreak story in New York and its classic expansions. This recommendation reflects the games’ different settings and current content—not a measured quality score. The comparison is current to October 29, 2026; The Division 2’s announced Central Park DLC is still scheduled for November 3, and its crossplay rollout has not yet begun.

Which game should a new player choose?
Pick The Division 2 if your main priority is joining the series’ current content cycle. Ubisoft documented a live in-game event in October 2026 and announced more content for November. Pick the first The Division if the setting and earlier story matter more to you than getting the latest additions.

The short answer for different kinds of players
There is no single winner for every newcomer. The practical default is The Division 2 because it is the game Ubisoft is still using for current events, announced downloadable content and a continuing endgame. Someone buying today is therefore entering the title with the clearest forward-looking schedule.

The original is the better deliberate choice when the phrase “start at the beginning” matters. Its post-outbreak New York setting is the first game’s defining identity, and the 2026 Definitive Edition gathers its base game, three named expansions and cosmetic packs. You are not buying a dead listing merely because it launched in 2016; Ubisoft continues to sell it.
If your group requires everyone to play together across different console and PC families, neither game is a safe purchase without a platform check. The original has no cross-platform support according to Ubisoft Help. The Division 2 crossplay was announced for a gradual rollout after November 3, 2026, not as a feature confirmed live on October 29. That timing can outweigh every other difference for a friend group.
What is the difference in setting and story?
The original is the place to begin if you want the series’ earlier outbreak-era New York setting. Ubisoft’s anniversary coverage identifies that experience as a defining part of the first game. The Division 2 is the sequel and the choice for a newcomer whose main interest is its newer content rather than starting with that earlier setting.
There is no need to treat the first game as a prerequisite for choosing the sequel based on the evidence available here. If experiencing the series in story order is your priority, begin with The Division; if current events and the upcoming expansion matter more, choose The Division 2. Setting preference is subjective: a fondness for the original’s snowy New York is a personal reason to choose it, not proof that one game is universally better.
A story-first player should also distinguish chronology from product packaging. The 2026 Definitive Edition is a new storefront package, not a newly written sequel or a rewritten introduction. It contains the original game and its established add-ons. Conversely, buying The Division 2 first does not mean you have purchased the earlier game’s campaign or expansions. The titles are separate products, so decide whether you want the first chapter, the sequel, or both.
Which game has more current content and support?
The Division 2 is the clearer choice for ongoing content as of October 29, 2026. Ubisoft documented its Red Moon Rising event as live in October and listed Echoes of Central Park for November 3, 2026. That date is a scheduled release, not confirmation that the DLC has launched.
Recommended Free Tools
Ubisoft announced the sequel’s Central Park DLC as part of continued development. It also announced a Level 40 boost with the DLC. Those details may matter to players planning to join friends or move into later-game content, but the planned release date should not be treated as a guarantee of availability before November 3. A buyer reading this after launch should verify what actually released, which edition includes it and whether the boost is available in the territory and platform being considered.
The first game remains available for purchase, but Ubisoft’s current announcements cited here do not establish a comparable schedule of events or newly announced content for it. That is why the recommendation for ongoing activity favors the sequel; it does not mean the original’s servers have been shut down. Availability for sale and a lack of a newly announced schedule are different claims.
The franchise’s chronology is also useful context. Ubisoft’s 2026 anniversary coverage marks ten years since the first The Division. The original base-game storefront date is March 8, 2016, while the sequel’s standard US listing dates to March 15, 2019. Those dates explain why the games have different support histories, but they do not provide a player-count comparison or a quality ranking.

What does “endgame” mean for this decision?
Ubisoft describes The Division 2 as having both a campaign and an endgame, and its October event and announced Central Park content show why that distinction matters to a new buyer. If you expect to finish a campaign and continue returning for seasonal or event-driven activity, the sequel is the more directly supported option in the material checked for this comparison.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe original’s Definitive Edition is instead compelling for the breadth of its included package. Underground, Survival and Last Stand are specifically listed as its three expansions. A newcomer interested in trying the first game’s additional modes can obtain them in one named bundle rather than assuming they are present on every copy. The package gives the original a clear completionist or historical appeal even though it is not the current-content recommendation.
Do not translate “up to four players” into a promise of a busy endgame or instant matchmaking. Four is the group-size specification Ubisoft gives for co-op. It says how many people can be in a group, not how many players are online, how quickly a queue fills or how active every platform is. No reliable, comparable all-platform population figure is established here.
Can you play with friends on different platforms?
Do not buy either game on the assumption that cross-platform co-op is available right now. Ubisoft said The Division 2 crossplay would begin rolling out after the November 3, 2026 DLC launch, gradually during November, with full availability planned by Season 4. As of October 29, the rollout was still in the future, so check its live status before buying if your group plays on different systems.
“After launch” is important wording. The announcement describes a staged rollout, not a single switch that was already active when the announcement was made. A group shopping before November 3 should treat crossplay as unavailable unless Ubisoft’s current support information says otherwise. A group shopping later should still verify whether its particular consoles, PC storefronts and accounts are included in the live phase.
For the original game, Ubisoft Help says there is no cross-platform support. Ubisoft’s wording is: “At this time, there is no cross-platform support for The Division.” That statement concerns The Division, not its sequel, and it should not be reused as a blanket statement about every future The Division 2 update.
Crossplay and cross-progression are different
Crossplay lets players on different platforms play together. Cross-progression lets a player carry progress between supported platforms or storefronts; it does not, by itself, enable cross-platform co-op.
Ubisoft documents The Division 2 cross-progression across Epic, Luna, Ubisoft Connect PC and Steam, subject to account and content conditions. That documentation describes PC storefront progress sharing. It is not evidence that console players can join PC players, and it does not establish that the announced crossplay rollout was already live on October 29.
Before buying, write down each friend’s actual platform, not just the device family. “PC” can mean different storefront accounts, and a console version can have edition or account requirements of its own. Then check three separate items: whether the game supports crossplay, whether the feature is live in your date window, and whether the specific content or account configuration is eligible. Cross-progression answers a different question: where your own progress can follow you.

Is either game suitable for solo play?
Ubisoft describes The Division 2 as playable solo or in co-op, with groups of up to four players, and identifies a campaign and endgame. That makes it a supported choice for someone who expects to begin alone but might team up later. You do not need to promise yourself a permanent four-person squad to justify choosing it.
The first game may appeal to a solo player whose priority is the original New York campaign and its historical place in the series. However, the material checked here does not provide a matching, current statement about the original’s group-size specification or matchmaking performance. Do not infer parity or difference from the sequel’s “up to four” description.
The available facts do not establish a reliable, comparable matchmaking or player-population picture across both games and all platforms. A four-player co-op specification describes the group size, not how quickly a match will fill or how many people are online. If playing with friends is essential, confirm that everyone has compatible versions and verify crossplay availability rather than relying on population assumptions.
What do the editions include?
Compare the exact edition and add-ons available for your platform and territory. A base-game purchase should not be assumed to include separately listed expansions, and an older physical copy may not contain the same content as a later digital bundle.

| Game or edition | What Ubisoft lists | Buying distinction |
|---|---|---|
| The Division Definitive Edition | Base game, Underground, Survival, Last Stand, and cosmetic packs | Ubisoft’s 2026 edition bundles three expansions; it is not a newly written sequel |
| The Division 2 | Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn are listed separately; Echoes of Central Park is scheduled for November 3, 2026 | Check whether the edition you are considering includes the specific add-on you want |
Ubisoft’s US listing dates the standard The Division 2 game to March 15, 2019. Its Echoes of Central Park listing describes new content and an announced Level 40 boost, but the DLC is not yet released as of October 29, 2026. An earlier anniversary promotion for Warlords of New York was limited to that promotion period; do not assume it is currently free.
That distinction matters when a store page displays several products beside one another. “The Division 2” can refer to the standard game, an edition that includes Warlords of New York, or another listing with different add-ons. “Definitive Edition” for the original identifies a bundle of the first game and its three Season Pass expansions. Read the contents panel rather than relying on the largest word in the product title.
The original base game’s storefront date is March 8, 2016, while Ubisoft dates the Definitive Edition to February 3, 2026. The latter is a package of the original game, its three Season Pass expansions and cosmetics—not a replacement sequel. Ubisoft’s publisher page mentions 4K/60 FPS for the original, but that figure should not be generalized to every console configuration. Treat it as a publisher-page specification for the listed product, not a universal performance promise.
Should you buy a disc or a digital edition?
A physical copy can be a straightforward option only if the disc matches a console that can use it. Ubisoft documents installation of The Division 2 from a PS4 disc. Confirm that your console has a compatible disc drive and check platform and region details before buying; a disc does not automatically include separately sold DLC or guarantee offline access.
“PS4 disc” is therefore a useful shopping phrase, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check whether your machine accepts that format, whether the seller’s region matches your account, and whether the product is the base game or a bundle. A disc can install the game while still requiring downloads, updates, an account connection or separately purchased add-ons; do not read offline rights into the existence of physical media.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For the original, distinguish a base-game PS4 disc from the 2026 digital Definitive Edition. The Definitive Edition’s listed expansions are not proof that an older physical copy contains them. Compare the exact contents on the platform store or product listing before you pay. Prices and temporary discounts are not included here because they can change by date, platform and territory.
Digital purchases reduce the risk of receiving the wrong disc region, but they still require you to inspect the edition name and included content. Storefront listings can place the base game, expansions and bundles beside one another. Save the contents list or order confirmation if you are buying during a promotion, because a temporary price does not change what the edition contains.
What should a friend group check first?
- List platforms and storefronts. Record whether each person uses PlayStation, Xbox or PC, and identify the PC storefront account where relevant.
- Decide whether cross-platform play is mandatory. If yes, the original is ruled out by Ubisoft Help, while The Division 2 needs a live-status check because its rollout was scheduled for after November 3.
- Choose the setting. Pick the original for the first game’s outbreak-era New York, or the sequel for its current campaign and endgame path.
- Compare editions. Confirm whether Warlords of New York, Battle for Brooklyn, Underground, Survival or Last Stand is included or sold separately.
- Set expectations about group size. The sequel’s documented co-op limit is up to four players; that is not a matchmaking or population guarantee.
- Recheck timing. If the purchase is made around November 3, verify whether Echoes of Central Park has launched and which crossplay phase is active.
Which game is the better physical-product search?
For the default recommendation, “The Division 2 PS4 disc” is the most natural physical-product anchor because Ubisoft explicitly documents PS4-disc installation. Use it only with the compatibility and edition checks above. Do not imply that a disc grants the sequel’s separately listed downloadable content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The Division PS4 disc” is a reasonable alternative for someone choosing the original, but an older disc should be distinguished from the digital Definitive Edition. The physical copy may be the base game while the 2026 package contains Underground, Survival, Last Stand and cosmetic items. Confirm the seller’s exact listing instead of assuming the words “complete” or “definitive” describe the same contents everywhere.
Readers interested in lore can also look for The World of Tom Clancy’s The Division, a physical companion identified by Ubisoft and published by Dark Horse Comics. It is an optional lore-oriented extra, not a game edition and not a substitute for either campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you make the final choice?
Use your main reason for buying as the deciding factor, then check platform compatibility and edition contents before checkout.
- Choose The Division 2 for the current event and announced upcoming content, or if you want the sequel’s campaign and endgame.
- Choose The Division if you want the earlier New York experience or the original expansions bundled in its Definitive Edition.
- Pause if cross-platform co-op is a requirement. The original has no cross-platform support according to Ubisoft Help, and the sequel’s rollout was scheduled to begin after November 3, 2026.
- Check edition details. Verify the game, add-ons, territory, platform, physical-disc compatibility and account requirements rather than inferring bundle contents from a title or box.
- Ignore temporary price logic. A sale can make either product cheaper for a moment, but it does not make an expansion included, extend support or change the crossplay schedule.
How this recommendation is framed
The comparison weighs setting and story order, ongoing developer support, campaign and endgame interest, solo or co-op needs, platform compatibility and edition contents. The recommendation is preference-based and uses Ubisoft’s dated announcements and product descriptions; it does not rely on a quality score, hands-on testing, matchmaking measurements or a universal player-count comparison.

Which game should I play first for story order?
Start with The Division if you want the earlier outbreak story and New York setting in sequence. Choose The Division 2 first if current events and its ongoing campaign-and-endgame structure matter more; the available product information does not establish that the original is required as a prerequisite.
Is The Division 2 more active than The Division?
Ubisoft documented a live Red Moon Rising event for The Division 2 in October 2026 and announced Echoes of Central Park for November 3, 2026. No comparable all-platform population measurement is established, so treat this as a current-content recommendation, not a player-count claim.
Does The Division 2 cross-progression mean my friends can play with me on another platform?
No. Ubisoft’s documented cross-progression support concerns carrying progress among Epic, Luna, Ubisoft Connect PC and Steam under account and content conditions. Playing together across platforms is crossplay, a separate feature.
When will The Division 2 crossplay be available?
Ubisoft announced a rollout after the November 3, 2026 Central Park DLC launch, gradually during November, with full availability planned by Season 4. On October 29, 2026, it was not yet a confirmed live feature. Check Ubisoft’s current status for your platform before buying.
Does the original The Division support crossplay?
Ubisoft Help says, “At this time, there is no cross-platform support for The Division.” That statement applies to the original game and should not be treated as a status update for The Division 2.
Is The Division Definitive Edition a new game?
No. Ubisoft describes it as the original game packaged with Underground, Survival, Last Stand and cosmetic packs. Its storefront date is February 3, 2026, but that does not make it a new sequel.

Does a PS4 disc include all DLC?
Not automatically. Ubisoft documents installation of The Division 2 from a PS4 disc, but you must verify the exact edition and add-ons. An older physical copy can be the base game while expansions are sold separately, and a disc does not guarantee offline access.
Is Echoes of Central Park already included or released?
As of October 29, 2026, Ubisoft listed Echoes of Central Park for November 3, 2026 and described an announced Level 40 boost. Treat that as a planned release until the launch has occurred, then check which editions include it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with The Division 2 for ongoing events, an announced Central Park expansion and the clearest current endgame path. Start with The Division for the original outbreak-era New York story and its Definitive Edition bundle of Underground, Survival and Last Stand. Verify crossplay timing, platform compatibility and exact edition contents before buying.
