Yes—you can start The Division 2 entirely on your own. Begin with the Washington, D.C. campaign, learn to fight from cover, and use one attacking skill plus one armor-repair skill while you learn the systems. You do not need the Dark Zone, a late-game gear set, Warlords of New York, or a high difficulty to finish the story. Let the weapons and armor you find shape your leveling loadout, then start specializing after the level-30 and level-40 milestones. This guide lays out a practical first session, a forgiving solo skill pairing, mission priorities, gear decisions, difficulty choices, and the current endgame rules.
Can you play The Division 2 solo?
You can play the Washington, D.C. campaign alone. Ubisoft lists single-player play separately from co-op and PvP and describes a campaign built around customizable weapons, gear, and skills. The Dark Zone is a separate activity, so a new player can complete the opening story without entering it.

What should you do in your first session?
Start the D.C. story at a comfortable difficulty and treat the opening missions as a tutorial for cover, positioning, weapons, and skills. The exact mission order can vary with the activities available on your map; the sequence below is a practical learning route, not a mandatory Ubisoft order.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Enter the campaign and select an available story mission. Follow the objective marker and read the early prompts for cover, armor, skills, and loot. Do not raise the difficulty merely because a mission feels familiar.
- Fight from cover before trying to out-damage enemies. Move between solid cover points, expose yourself only long enough to shoot, and relocate when an enemy starts pushing your position. A safe angle is usually more valuable than a slightly stronger weapon.
- Unlock and test an attacking skill. The Assault Turret and Striker Drone are both documented as offensive skills. Use one during an ordinary encounter so you can see how cooldowns, targeting, and placement work.
- Add an armor-repair skill if survival is your problem. The Reinforcer Chem Launcher and Restorer Hive are described by Ubisoft as armor-repair options. Pairing one with an attacker gives a forgiving setup while you learn.
- Use nearby map activities as optional practice. Control points and other activities can provide extra combat practice and loot when you want a break from a story mission. They are useful detours, not prerequisites that must be cleared before the next campaign objective.
- Keep the difficulty manageable. Stay at Story or Normal while you are still learning enemy behavior and skill controls. Increase the challenge only after you can reliably finish encounters without running out of armor or losing track of your position.
Ubisoft’s overview of the game is available at The Division 2 game details page.
What is a good beginner solo build?
A sensible first setup is one attacking skill and one repair skill. This is an editorial recommendation based on the roles Ubisoft documents, not an official ranking or a tested best-in-slot build. It gives you a way to damage enemies while preserving a tool for recovering armor.

| Choice | What it does | When it fits a new solo player |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Turret | Stationary attacker that fires at nearby targets. | Choose it when you can predict where enemies will approach and want a set-and-defend tool. |
| Striker Drone | Mobile attacker that can be ordered onto a target. | Choose it when enemies move often or you prefer direct control over the current target. |
| Reinforcer Chem Launcher | Armor-repair skill. | Useful when you need an immediate repair option and can place the cloud deliberately. |
| Restorer Hive | Armor-repair skill. | Useful when you want a repair device covering an area while you concentrate on shooting. |
The descriptions for these roles come from Ubisoft’s skills overview. The Turret-versus-Drone decision is about encounter layout and control preference, not a proven damage comparison. Two attacking skills are also possible once you are surviving comfortably; they simply leave you with less dedicated repair capacity.
Should you use the Reviver Hive?
Do not build your first plan around an assumed self-revive. Older descriptions of the Reviver Hive should not be treated as a guarantee that it will automatically save a downed solo character. Start with a clearly documented attacker and repair option, then investigate other variants after you understand their current behavior in your version of the game.
How should you approach story missions?
Prioritize the D.C. campaign missions that are available to you, but use the map to solve the problem you actually have. If a mission exposes poor positioning, repeat a nearby activity and practice moving between cover. If your damage is low, replace an outdated weapon with a better drop rather than farming a permanent build.
Before entering a mission
- Read the recommended level and avoid entering far below it.
- Equip the highest-level useful weapons and armor you have, then compare their attributes and talents rather than keeping every old item.
- Check both skill slots and make sure one skill can attack while the other can repair armor if you are still learning.
- Carry enough ammunition and identify a retreat route before the first large arena.
During an encounter
- Open from cover and let your skill draw attention or pressure a target before exposing yourself.
- Eliminate enemies who can force you out of cover, then deal with tougher targets when the field is less crowded.
- Move before your current cover becomes surrounded; standing still is not the same as being safe.
- Use armor repair before you are one hit from defeat, so the animation or cooldown does not become an emergency.
After a mission
Compare new drops against the role you are currently playing. A weapon with better damage but an irrelevant talent may still be less useful than a slightly weaker weapon that supports your preferred range or skill plan. During leveling, replacing gear is normal; do not spend your time assembling an exact endgame set before level 40.

What gear should you keep while leveling?
Keep items that improve the way you are actually playing, and sell or dismantle items that have become clear upgrades over. Leveling gear is temporary, so the goal is a functional loadout, not a permanent collection.
Compare core attributes and talents
Ubisoft’s system overview describes core attributes, additional attributes, talents, Skill Tiers, and a recalibration library. For a weapon-focused character, prioritize pieces that support weapon damage and survivability. For a skill-focused character, pieces that contribute to Skill Tiers or skill-related attributes can be more valuable. Do not assume that every build needs six Skill Tiers; that count describes the system’s available tiers, not a requirement for every play style.
Replace outdated pieces without regret
If a new item is substantially closer to your current level and makes encounters easier, equip it even if the old item has a more interesting talent. Save a favorite piece only when it continues to support your current role and remains competitive. Before level 40, a perfect long-term stash is less important than learning what each attribute changes.
When does targeted farming make sense?
Targeted Loot is a level-40 system. While leveling, use the drops and activities naturally available to you. Once you reach level 40 and have a functional build, Targeted Loot can focus rewards toward a desired category instead of asking you to rely entirely on random drops.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich difficulty should a solo beginner choose?
Choose the lowest setting that lets you practice without turning every encounter into a scramble. Ubisoft Help lists Story, Normal, Hard, Challenging, and Heroic for replaying missions, and Normal through Heroic for global difficulty. Optional Directives can add extra conditions, but none is required for completing the story.
Story or Normal is a reasonable starting point. Move to Hard after you can manage armor, cooldowns, and enemy flanks consistently. Challenging and Heroic are optional goals for a developed build, not proof that you are playing correctly. If a higher setting makes you abandon cover or ignore your repair skill, lower it and continue learning.

What changes at level 30 and level 40?
The game’s progression rules changed, so older guides that send you through World Tiers and Gear Score are obsolete. Ubisoft’s June 2024 First Rogue notes state, “World Tiers have been removed from the game.” The same notes state, “The Targeted Loot system is now available at level 40.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Level 30: specializations
Specializations unlock at level 30 under the current rules. Treat that as an opportunity to choose a direction, not a deadline to finish a complete build. Your ordinary weapons, cover habits, and skill pairing still matter more than selecting a specialization immediately.
Level 40: the shared endgame systems
At level 40, Ubisoft’s June 2024 changes place Targeted Loot, Keener’s Watch, global difficulty, and shared endgame access. This is when it becomes sensible to improve a coherent build, use targeted categories to chase specific gear, and make more deliberate choices about attributes and talents.
The foundational system overview describes six Skill Tiers, with one tier added by each Skill Tier core. A skill build can use those tiers, but a weapon-focused solo build does not need to fill all six. Choose cores that reinforce the role you actually want to play.
Ubisoft summarizes the current progression changes in its First Rogue announcement and notes.

How does recalibration help?
The recalibration library lets you store attributes and talents from equipment and use those stored values when improving another item. This is most useful after you find a piece with the right role but one disappointing attribute: keep the useful base item, then use the library to correct the part that does not fit. It is a level-40 optimization tool, not a reason to stop replacing ordinary leveling gear.
Do you need Warlords of New York for level 40?
No. Ubisoft’s 2024 One Endgame changes allow base-game owners to reach level 40 and access shared endgame content without buying Warlords of New York. The expansion remains optional content that adds its own New York story, map, and certain skills.
| Content | Base game | Warlords of New York |
|---|---|---|
| Washington, D.C. campaign | Included | Not required for the D.C. story |
| Level 40 and shared endgame access | Available under the June 2024 changes | Not a mandatory purchase for this access |
| New York campaign and map | Not included | Expansion content |
| Certain expansion skills | Not included | Expansion content |
An older Ubisoft Help page still says seasons require completing Warlords. That conflicts with the dated June 10, 2024 One Endgame announcement and its June 18 FAQ, which define what remains expansion-only. For a current progression decision, use the newer, specific change notes rather than the obsolete prerequisite wording.
Should you use a level boost?
Use a boost only if you knowingly want to skip the opening experience. Ubisoft says boosting skips the early story and its corresponding achievements. That can be convenient for a returning player, but it removes the safest place for a first-time solo player to learn cover, skill timing, loot comparison, and mission flow.
If your goal is to understand the campaign or build a character from scratch, play the D.C. story normally. If you already know the systems and only want to join level-40 activities, the skipped missions and achievements are the trade-off to weigh before confirming the boost. Ubisoft explains the consequences in its character-boosting article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are advanced activities suitable for a new solo player?
Some late-game activities can be entered alone, but “solo-capable” does not mean “beginner-friendly.” Ubisoft says Countdown can be played solo at level 40 and describes Escalation as single-player-capable. Those options make sense after you have a stable level-40 build and understand your skills, not as a replacement for the campaign tutorial.

Prototype upgrades are an especially poor first target. Ubisoft lists level 40, maximum expertise, and optimized attributes among their prerequisites. Build a reliable character first; treat Prototype work as a later project after the underlying systems are familiar.

What content is upcoming in late 2026?
As of October 29, 2026, Ubisoft’s October 13 announcement schedules Echoes of Central Park for November 3, 2026. The announcement says crossplay will roll out after launch, so neither the expansion’s availability nor crossplay should be treated as already active at this timestamp. The preview also mentions six new skill variants, but they are forthcoming content, not part of a beginner build you can use before launch.
That timing does not change the opening route: start the D.C. campaign, learn cover and skills, and reach the current progression milestones. Recheck Ubisoft’s Echoes of Central Park announcement after November 2 for launch-status wording.
What is the simplest solo plan to follow?
- Play the D.C. campaign on Story or Normal.
- Learn to rotate between cover instead of standing in the open.
- Equip an Assault Turret or Striker Drone, then pair it with Reinforcer Chem Launcher or Restorer Hive if you need more survivability.
- Use optional map activities for practice and replacement loot, not as a mandatory checklist.
- Replace leveling gear when useful drops appear; do not farm a final build before level 40.
- Choose a specialization at level 30 when you are ready to experiment.
- At level 40, use Targeted Loot, Keener’s Watch, global difficulty, and recalibration to refine a build.
- Consider Warlords only for its New York story, map, and associated skills, not as a requirement for level 40.
This route keeps the early game focused on transferable skills—cover, positioning, target selection, and cooldown management—while leaving optional systems for the point where they become useful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a paid Season Pass required to get the new seasonal gear?
No. Ubisoft’s 2026 season announcement distinguishes gear on the free track from an optional paid Season Pass. A new solo player can learn the core campaign and progression systems without treating the pass as a prerequisite.

A Skill Tier is a gear-based core that improves a skill’s tier, with the documented system allowing up to six tiers. It is not a sixth skill slot, and weapon-focused characters can choose other cores instead of building all six tiers.
Can I buy a physical PS4 copy and still play the solo campaign?
Ubisoft verifies a PS4 edition and single-player mode on its product listing, but that listing does not verify a particular retailer’s disc stock, region, included downloadable content, or bundle. Check those details with the retailer before purchasing a disc.
When can I use Echoes of Central Park?
At the October 29, 2026 information point, Ubisoft had announced a November 3, 2026 release and post-launch crossplay rollout. Treat both as forthcoming until the launch window has passed and the publisher updates the announcement.
