If The Division 2 is stuttering, dropping frames, or crashing on PC, start by identifying when it happens—not by changing every graphics setting. For “Unplayable stuttering/lag; unsure how to resolve” or “stuttering, fps drops,” the most useful first checks are to disable overlays, compare the game’s DX11 and DX12 renderers on the same PC, and see whether a repeatable activity or error code points to a known game or connection issue. Those are reversible troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
What kind of problem are you trying to fix?
A drop in rendered frames, a game crash, a full-PC reboot, and a server disconnect can look similar while you are playing, but they point to different causes. Classifying the symptom first prevents you from spending time on graphics settings when the problem is actually a connection failure—or blaming your PC for an activity-specific game issue.

- Uneven motion or FPS drops: The game continues, but the image feels choppy or slows down. Compare the same location and activity before and after changing one setting.
- Crash to desktop or a hard lock: Note whether the game closes, stops responding, or requires a restart. A repeatable trigger is more useful than a general report that it “crashes.”
- Whole-PC reboot: Treat this as a system stability problem, not just a low-FPS problem. Record whether it happens only in the game or elsewhere too.
- Disconnect or DELTA/MIKE error: Check Ubisoft’s service and connection guidance. A network hitch can resemble a frame drop, but it does not establish that the PC is rendering slowly.
Start by asking what you can observe rather than guessing at a cause. Does the image itself become uneven while the game remains responsive, or does the whole encounter appear to pause and then catch up? Does the game close, or do you return to a connection error? A brief online hitch can be difficult to classify by feel alone; an error code or disconnect is useful evidence, but its absence does not prove that a hitch is a rendering problem. Keep the categories separate until a repeatable test points toward one.
Could a known game issue explain the stutter or crash?
Check whether the problem occurs in a specific activity or when a named gameplay modifier appears before making extensive local changes. Ubisoft Bug Reporter entry TCTD2-7822 associates the One For All mutator with severe lag and crashes, including in matching Escalation circumstances.

The entry was last indexed as updated September 29, 2026, with a Planned status. The live issue page’s October 30 resolution could not be confirmed, so this is a lead to check—not proof that the issue is currently unresolved or that it explains unrelated crashes. If your problem consistently follows the One For All trigger, capture the activity and circumstances and compare them with Ubisoft’s issue listing before changing hardware or BIOS settings.
This distinction matters because a problem that appears only when a particular mutator or activity is present is not the same evidence as a crash that occurs at launch, in several unrelated activities, or outside the game. Note which enemies, activity, and moment preceded the failure if they are repeatable. Do not generalize the One For All report to every instance of stutter or every crash in The Division 2; the relevance depends on whether your circumstances match.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should you record before changing settings?
A short baseline makes it possible to tell whether a change helped. Write down the symptom, when it begins, and what was happening immediately beforehand.
- Note whether it starts at launch, after a period of play, after an update, or only in one activity.
- Record the exact error code if one appears, and whether the game closes, locks up, disconnects, or restarts the PC.
- Write down your graphics card, processor, RAM, graphics driver version, display resolution, and whether DX11 or DX12 is selected.
- Revisit the same location with the same workload after each change. Change one variable at a time so a result is interpretable.
If the problem is intermittent, a single smooth run does not establish a fix. Look for a repeatable difference across comparable sessions, and restore a setting if it makes stability worse.
A useful test note can be brief: the activity and location, what happened, the renderer in use, the resolution, and the one thing you changed. Add whether the change affected frame pacing, measured FPS, stability, or none of those. This prevents a common troubleshooting trap: changing overlays, drivers, graphics settings, and memory tuning together, then being unable to tell which change mattered. If the test conditions differ substantially—for example, a different activity or a different renderer—treat the comparison cautiously rather than attributing the result to one setting.
Can disabling overlays and background tools reduce stutter?
Yes, disabling overlays and unnecessary background tools is a useful, reversible diagnostic because software that monitors or hooks into a game may coincide with performance or stability problems. Ubisoft developer guidance specifically calls out Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Nvidia App, Discord, RivaTuner, and other monitoring or background tools.
- Close monitoring, capture, and communication programs you do not need for the comparison.
- Turn off their in-game overlays, including any enabled in the game launcher or graphics software.
- Run the same game activity and note whether the stutter, crash, or lockup changes.
- If the problem improves, re-enable tools one at a time to identify a possible trigger. If it does not, restore the tools you need and continue to the next check.
One player reported that disabling Discord’s overlay resolved their stutter, but that is an individual report, not evidence that the same change works for every PC. Do not leave useful monitoring or accessibility features disabled indefinitely if they are not implicated.
Think of this as a temporary isolation test, not a recommendation to uninstall software. An overlay or monitoring program is a possible interaction to test, not a confirmed cause on every machine. Close only what you can comfortably restore, and make the test meaningful by repeating the same activity. If disabling an overlay changes nothing, that is still useful: restore it and move on rather than repeatedly toggling unrelated programs.

How do you compare DX11 and DX12?
Neither renderer is established as universally faster or more stable for every PC. Treat the choice as an A/B comparison: keep the workload and other settings consistent, then compare stability, repeatable frame pacing, and measured FPS on your own machine.
- Open the game’s Video settings and locate Enable DX12 Renderer.
- Change the setting to use the other renderer. If the game prompts you to relaunch, do so.
- Repeat the same activity under comparable conditions and record whether frame pacing, FPS, or stability changed.
- Keep the renderer that behaves better for your setup. If both produce hard locks or neither changes the symptom, revert as needed and investigate other causes.
Player-support reports conflict: one player reported improvement with DX11, while another reported hard locks in both modes. That is why a renderer switch is a test rather than a promised cure. Ubisoft’s original PC requirements include both DX11 and DX12; the presence of both options does not make one a universal recommendation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use the same comparison criteria for both modes. A renderer that produces a higher reading in one short run but causes repeatable freezes is not automatically the better choice; stability and even frame delivery matter too. Conversely, a report that DX11 helped one player does not mean every PC should switch to DX11. Keep other settings unchanged while comparing so you do not mistake the effect of a graphics-quality change for a renderer difference.
What Windows, driver, and stability checks are worth trying?
If the problem continues across renderers, check basic system stability and memory pressure before buying parts or applying aggressive tuning. Ubisoft developer guidance from May 2025 recommends current graphics drivers, checking for motherboard-manufacturer updates, temporarily disconnecting nonessential USB devices, closing background applications, and leaving the Windows page file system-managed.
Update drivers and reduce variables
- Check for a current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer, and note the version before updating so you can report what changed.
- Check the motherboard manufacturer’s support information for relevant updates; do not install firmware or drivers for a different motherboard model.
- Temporarily disconnect nonessential USB devices and close background applications, then compare the same game workload.
Do these as deliberate checks rather than as a bulk reset. If you update a driver, record that update and test the same symptom afterward. If a nonessential USB device is disconnected, reconnect it after the comparison if it makes no difference. Manufacturer updates should match the exact hardware model; the fact that an update exists for a related motherboard is not a reason to install it on yours.
Check memory pressure instead of guessing a page-file size
Microsoft’s Windows Client documentation explains that reaching the system commit limit can cause freezing, crashing, and other malfunctions. If Windows is under memory pressure, the page file matters; Ubisoft’s guidance is to keep it Windows-managed rather than choosing an arbitrary fixed size. A crash alone does not prove that memory is the cause, so use the symptom and system evidence to guide this check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis is a reason to investigate memory pressure, not to assume a particular page-file setting will fix every failure. Avoid copying an arbitrary page-file size from a forum post: the documented Windows issue concerns the system reaching its commit limit, and the Ubisoft guidance is to leave management to Windows. If the game crashes while other applications are also open, closing unnecessary background applications is a sensible test; it does not establish that you need to buy RAM.
Undo optional tuning while diagnosing crashes
If you have applied Nvidia App optimization, revert it temporarily and compare against the game’s normal settings. Ubisoft developer guidance also recommends testing stock CPU and GPU voltage settings. Aggressive RAM profiles can be another conditional stability check, but changing BIOS memory settings is not a routine first step; only consider it if you know how to restore the previous configuration.

These steps are most relevant when you have already changed those settings or when unexplained instability persists. Do not make several voltage, memory, and driver changes simultaneously, and do not treat BIOS adjustment as the default response to ordinary FPS variation. A whole-PC reboot or hard lock calls for attention to system stability; a modest FPS drop by itself does not show that CPU or GPU voltage is the problem.
Which hardware targets are useful—and what do they not prove?
Ubisoft’s published 2019 PC tiers distinguish targets for different resolutions and frame rates. They are historical vendor targets, not measurements of a modern patched build and not a guarantee that a system will deliver the named FPS in every activity. Steam’s currently displayed Ubisoft game listing specifies 77GB of available storage; that figure is an installation-space requirement, not a performance benchmark.
| Ubisoft PC tier | Target | RAM | VRAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum, 2019 | 1080p / 30 FPS | 8GB | Not stated for this tier |
| Recommended, 2019 | 1080p / 60 FPS | 8GB | 4GB |
| Higher-resolution tier, 2019 | 1440p / 60 FPS | 16GB | 8GB |
| Higher-resolution tier, 2019 | 4K / 60 FPS | 16GB | 11GB |
The targets above are Ubisoft’s published figures from 2019. Steam’s listing, observed in 2026, shows 77GB available storage; it does not date that storage figure as a newly published 2026 benchmark. Check available storage if installation or updating is failing, but an SSD purchase is not an established FPS fix.
Compare your PC with a tier only as a starting point. A system below a historical target may have less headroom at a particular resolution, but the figures do not diagnose the cause of a specific stutter or crash. Before considering an upgrade, establish whether RAM, VRAM, storage capacity, compatibility, or another observed constraint is actually relevant.
Keep the target and the symptom in view together. The historical 1080p/30 minimum, 1080p/60 recommended, 1440p/60, and 4K/60 figures describe different combinations of resolution and performance target. The RAM and VRAM figures are useful comparison points when deciding whether a system is far from the intended tier, but they are not a test result for the current patched game. In particular, do not read the 77GB available-storage listing as a storage-speed specification or as evidence that the game requires an SSD.
What should you do about FPS drops versus connection errors?
For DELTA or MIKE errors and suspected disconnects, follow Ubisoft’s service and connection troubleshooting rather than treating the issue as a graphics-performance problem. Ubisoft’s PC guidance recommends checking service status and trying a wired connection where practical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An Ethernet connection is a reasonable network comparison if Wi-Fi is involved, but it cannot repair low rendered FPS. Conversely, lowering graphics settings, adding VRAM, or buying optimization software is not an evidence-based fix for a confirmed server disconnection. If a hitch happens alongside a disconnect, record both rather than assuming one caused the other.
Make the network branch explicit in your notes: whether a DELTA or MIKE message appeared, whether Ubisoft’s service status indicates an issue, and whether the problem changes on a wired connection if one is practical to test. A wired test is useful as a connection comparison, not as a general performance upgrade. If the symptom remains a repeatable low-FPS or frame-pacing issue without a disconnect, return to the local renderer, overlay, driver, and hardware checks instead.

When should you buy hardware or contact support?
Make a purchase only after a repeatable comparison points to a specific constraint. Ubisoft’s 2019 higher-resolution tiers list 16GB of RAM for 1440p and 4K targets, and 8GB or 11GB of VRAM respectively; those historical specifications can help frame a compatibility check, but do not by themselves prove that an upgrade will fix your particular symptom.
- Considering a RAM upgrade: Check whether your device uses DIMMs or laptop memory, the supported memory generation, maximum capacity, and motherboard or system compatibility before ordering.
- Considering a graphics card: An 8GB-VRAM card is relevant to a 1440p discussion only if evidence shows the current GPU or VRAM is a constraint. The tier is not a promise of a particular modern-build FPS.
- Considering an SSD: Treat it as an installation-capacity or diagnosed-storage option. The Steam listing’s 77GB available-space figure is not proof that replacing a drive will improve frame pacing.
- Considering an Ethernet cable: Reserve it for the connection branch, not as a remedy for low FPS.
There is no need to spend money before the free diagnostic path has narrowed the issue. The initial checks—recording the symptom, disabling overlays temporarily, comparing renderers, checking drivers and manufacturer guidance, and separating network errors—are tests, not paid fixes. No prices or guaranteed return for any upgrade were published; compare purchases on your actual hardware, desired resolution, compatibility, available storage, and the bottleneck you have observed.
If a RAM upgrade is the confirmed consideration, verify form factor, memory generation, supported capacity, and system compatibility before buying a kit; a desktop DIMM and laptop memory are not interchangeable. An 8GB VRAM card belongs in a demonstrated GPU-limited 1440p discussion, not as a general remedy for every crash. A 1TB internal SSD can be considered for installation capacity or a diagnosed storage need, but neither that capacity nor an SSD is a proven FPS cure here. Ethernet belongs only to the network branch. These distinctions keep a symptom-based troubleshooting process from turning into an unnecessary shopping list.
For an unexplained crash or lockup, send support a concise record of your hardware, graphics driver, selected renderer, error code, and exact steps that reproduce the problem. If the failure appears only with a specific activity or modifier, include that detail; it can make a game-side issue easier to distinguish from a general PC fault.
Before escalating, include what you already tested and the result: whether overlays were disabled, whether DX11 and DX12 were compared, and whether the failure persisted under the same workload. State whether it was a game crash, hard lock, PC reboot, or disconnect rather than using “lag” for all four. For a One For All-related reproduction, identify the matching activity circumstances. A focused report is more useful than a list of unrelated settings changed at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you use a frame cap or graphics adjustment?
Ubisoft describes uncapped frame rate and variable-refresh-rate support. That makes a frame cap a reasonable reversible experiment if you are investigating uneven frame pacing, but the available guidance does not identify one cap as optimal for every display or PC. Compare an appropriate cap with your uncapped baseline under the same workload, and keep the option that behaves better without presenting the result as a universal setting.
Recommended Free Tools
Likewise, graphics changes can be part of a controlled comparison when the symptom is local rendering performance, but changing every quality option at once makes the outcome hard to interpret. Do not assume that lower settings will solve a game-side crash tied to a particular modifier or a confirmed server disconnect. First identify the branch, then test one relevant variable and record the result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an online hitch look like an FPS drop in The Division 2?
Yes, a hitch during play does not by itself show whether frames are being rendered slowly or the connection is interrupting gameplay. Note whether it coincides with a disconnect or error code, then compare it with a repeatable local performance symptom.

Should I reinstall Windows to fix The Division 2 crashes?
A crash alone does not establish that Windows needs reinstalling, and the checks here do not support that as a first-line fix. Gather the error and reproduction details and rule out reversible software, driver, memory, and game-specific causes before considering major system changes.
Will lowering every graphics setting stop a One For All crash?
There is no established evidence that lowering all graphics settings fixes the One For All issue. If the crash consistently follows that modifier, document the activity and check the associated Ubisoft issue rather than assuming it is a GPU limitation.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does a 77GB storage requirement mean the game needs an SSD?
No. The listing’s figure specifies available storage, not a drive type or a frame-rate requirement. It is useful for checking installation space, but it does not establish that an SSD will resolve stutter.
Is DX11 better than DX12 for The Division 2?
There is no universal winner established here. Ubisoft includes both renderers, and player reports conflict on stability. Compare frame pacing, measured FPS, and stability on the same PC and workload, then use the mode that behaves better for your setup.
Should I buy more RAM to fix stuttering?
Only after a repeatable comparison points to memory as a constraint. Ubisoft’s 2019 targets list 8GB for its 1080p tiers and 16GB for 1440p/4K tiers, but those historical targets do not prove that RAM is causing your particular stutter. Confirm your system’s supported memory type and capacity before buying.
Can an Ethernet cable improve low FPS?
No. Ubisoft recommends testing a wired connection for connection problems, including suspected DELTA or MIKE disconnects. An Ethernet cable is a network troubleshooting step, not a remedy for low rendered FPS.
Is a frame cap guaranteed to fix uneven frame pacing?
No. Ubisoft describes uncapped frame rate and variable-refresh-rate support, but there is no universally optimal cap established here. A cap is a reversible comparison to test on your own display and PC.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings: separate local frame pacing from crashes, system reboots, and DELTA/MIKE disconnects. Test overlays and DX11 versus DX12 one at a time, check for a matching One For All issue, and use Ubisoft’s 2019 PC tiers only as historical comparison points. Keep the early steps free and reversible; buy hardware only when you can identify a compatible, observed constraint.
