The Covenant (2006) ends with Caleb Danvers defeating Chase Collins, but it does not prove that Chase is dead. William Danvers III gives his own share of the supernatural Power to Caleb, dying in the transfer; Caleb then blasts Chase into flames at Old Putnam Barn. Firefighters find no third body, while the spells holding Sarah, Kate and Pogue collapse. Caleb, Sarah, Pogue, Kate, Reid, Tyler and Evelyn survive. This is the dark-fantasy film about the Sons of Ipswich, not Guy Ritchie’s 2023 war drama with the same title.
The 2006 movie stars Steven Strait as Caleb, Sebastian Stan as Chase, Laura Ramsey as Sarah, Taylor Kitsch as Pogue, Toby Hemingway as Reid, Chace Crawford as Tyler, Jessica Lucas as Kate, Wendy Crewson as Evelyn and Stephen McHattie as William.

What happens at the end of The Covenant?
On Caleb’s eighteenth birthday, Chase kidnaps Sarah Wenham and takes her to the abandoned Putnam Barn. Chase has already Ascended and possesses more than one family share of the Power. He demands that Caleb transfer his share by saying the words, I will you.
Caleb refuses because transferring a share kills the person who gives it away. The two warlocks fight, and Chase initially overwhelms Caleb. Caleb Ascends during the confrontation, but the newly matured Power still cannot match Chase’s accumulated strength.

At the Danvers home, Evelyn begs William to intervene. William is still alive, despite Kate’s earlier claim that Caleb’s father died. He has hidden himself in an old colonial house and looks decades older than his real age because years of using the Power have consumed him. William remotely wills his share to Caleb, an act that kills him instantly.
The extra share changes the fight. Caleb releases a blast that engulfs Chase in fire. Sarah, Kate and Pogue awaken when Chase’s spells break. Firefighters searching the burned barn tell Caleb and Sarah that they found no third person in the wreckage. The film cuts away without showing Chase’s body.

In the longer ending beat used in plot recaps, Caleb repairs the couple’s damaged windshield with a casual use of magic. Sarah is visibly unsettled: Caleb has survived, but the Power is now part of his everyday life.
Is Chase Collins dead?
No definitive answer is given. Chase is shown being swallowed by Caleb’s flame, yet the authorities find no body and the film never supplies a death confirmation. His disappearance can be read as survival, teleportation or an intentionally unresolved fate, but none is established on screen.
The missing body is a sequel hook rather than a secret confirmation. No theatrical sequel was made, so the movie’s final canon remains the fire, the broken hexes and the empty space where Chase should have been.

| Caleb Danvers | Alive | He Ascends and inherits William’s share, then leaves with Sarah. |
| Sarah Wenham | Alive | Chase’s spell breaks when he is taken out of the fight. |

William Danvers III is the confirmed on-screen death that decides the duel. A Spenser Academy student is also found dead earlier in the story. Chase’s biological father dies after willing his share to Chase. A fan-wiki backstory, not the film’s main plot summary, says Chase glamoured his adoptive parents’ car into a fatal crash.

How does the Power work in the film?
Its origin is deliberately unknown
The opening narration says, “No one really knows how the Power came to be. Not even the Book of Damnation recorded its beginnings. But those who mastered it have always been hunted.” The movie gives the Power a colonial, Salem-adjacent atmosphere without presenting a documented historical account.
It follows five bloodlines
Five families in the Ipswich colony formed a secret covenant. Kate explains that the Sons are supposedly descendants of those families, and that the fifth line was believed to have been wiped out during the Salem witch hunts. Four lines remain active in the present-day story. Chase is the hidden fifth Son, descended through the Putnam/Pope line in expanded fan-wiki genealogy.
The first manifestation comes at 13
A warlock gets a first taste of magic on his thirteenth birthday. Caleb calls it a test. The boys experiment through their teenage years, becoming stronger before they understand what the Power costs.
Ascension happens at 18
At eighteen, at apparently the exact minute of birth, a warlock Ascends. The Power fully matures and becomes dramatically stronger. Caleb’s Ascension occurs during the barn fight, which is why he can finally challenge Chase after William adds a second share.

A fan-wiki description calls Ascended power a thousand times stronger, but the film itself only establishes a major increase. The larger multiplier is not an official studio measurement.
Using it consumes the user
After Ascension, the Power functions as the warlock’s life force. The characters talk about using it with the language of addiction. Overuse causes premature aging, mental deterioration and death, although the film never gives a fixed number of years or a precise age penalty for each spell.
William is forty-four but appears near death because he has spent too much of his life using magic. Chase admits that he became addicted before anyone explained the damage: “I like to use a lot. Only no one ever told me about the effects, the damage, the addiction.”
Transfer is a lethal bargain
A warlock can will his share to another person by saying, “I will you.” The recipient gains that family’s portion, while the giver dies immediately. Sarah suggests that Reid, Pogue or Tyler could give Caleb their Power, but Caleb refuses to trade a friend’s life for an advantage.
Chase already holds his own share and the share taken from his biological father. That stacking explains why he is stronger than Caleb at the start of the barn battle. William’s sacrifice gives Caleb the second share he needs.

The visual tell
When the Power is active, a warlock’s eyes turn completely black and gold sparks move through his body. The effect marks magic in use, whether the spell is a small act of control or a destructive attack.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Chase want Caleb’s share?
Chase Collins is the expelled fifth Son, adopted after his mother’s death and raised without anyone teaching him the rules. His Power appeared at thirteen. He later found his biological father, persuaded him to transfer his share and Ascended with that extra strength.
Chase believes accumulating other Ascended warlocks’ shares can offset the aging and damage caused by his own addiction. His campus attacks are steps toward isolating Caleb: the dead student, Sarah’s shower stalking, Kate’s spiders and Pogue’s crash all show a deliberate campaign rather than random bullying.
At the barn, Sarah is immobilized and Chase orders Caleb to speak the transfer formula. Caleb’s refusal preserves the covenant’s moral boundary: power cannot be gained without someone else paying with his life.

What does the 2006 film have to do with the 2023 The Covenant?
Nothing beyond the shared title. The 2006 production is a 97-minute PG-13 supernatural thriller set around Spenser Academy in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Guy Ritchie’s 2023 film is a war drama about Sergeant John Kinley and interpreter Ahmed, with a completely different cast, plot and ending.
| Film | Genre and central bond | Ending type |
|---|---|---|
| The Covenant (2006) | Teen dark fantasy; a secret bloodline covenant and rival warlocks. | Caleb wins, William dies, Chase disappears without a body. |
| The Covenant (2023) | Afghanistan war drama; a soldier’s pledge to an interpreter. | John works to rescue Ahmed and secure his family’s safety. |
Was there a sequel or a related story?
No film sequel followed, despite the unresolved Chase ending. A four-issue Top Cow/Spacedog graphic-novel prequel was published around the movie. Written by Aron Coleite with art by Tone Rodriguez, it begins when the boys first receive the Power and uses Miller in the role that the film gives Tyler. Coleite described its tone as closer to The Crucible and 1980s horror than to a school fantasy adventure.
