For a first playthrough, follow Half-Life, then the optional Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay side stories, followed by Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two. Save Half-Life: Alyx for after Episode Two unless you specifically want strict in-universe chronology. The essential flat-screen story is simply Half-Life → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two; Alyx is the only major entry that requires a SteamVR-compatible headset.

What order should I play the Half-Life games in?

The best first-playthrough order preserves the main Gordon Freeman arc while placing the optional Black Mesa perspectives where they make the most narrative sense.

Step Game How it fits Display and hardware
1 Half-Life The original Black Mesa incident and the beginning of Gordon Freeman’s story Flat-screen; official Steam release
2 Half-Life: Opposing Force Optional expansion from an invading soldier’s viewpoint Flat-screen
3 Half-Life: Blue Shift Optional expansion from security guard Barney Calhoun’s viewpoint Flat-screen
4 Half-Life: Decay Optional two-character side story set during the Black Mesa incident Originally PlayStation 2
5 Half-Life 2 Gordon returns to an occupied Earth and joins the resistance in City 17 Flat-screen
6 Half-Life 2: Episode One Direct continuation of Half-Life 2 Flat-screen
7 Half-Life 2: Episode Two Next continuation, expanding the resistance’s fight Flat-screen
8 Half-Life: Alyx Chronological prequel set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2; best saved for last on a first run SteamVR-compatible headset required

If you only want the required story, start with Half-Life and then play Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two. The three Black Mesa side stories add perspective rather than prerequisites, and Alyx can be postponed without losing the main sequel’s continuity.

Why start with the original Half-Life?

Half-Life is the foundation for every later entry. Valve’s Steam franchise information lists its release as November 19, 1998, and Valve’s company timeline identifies it as the game that established the series’ Black Mesa incident and Gordon Freeman’s central role.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The current official release is a practical starting point. Valve’s anniversary update lists the Uplink mini-campaign, Steam Deck support, updated graphics settings, additional multiplayer maps, and restored materials. Those additions are optional enhancements; the main Black Mesa campaign remains the story entry you need before moving on.

Play the campaign in its normal progression rather than trying to interleave other games by chapter. Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay overlap the same broad disaster, so finishing Half-Life first gives you the context to recognize their alternate viewpoints without fragmenting the opening story.

Should I play Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay?

Play them after Half-Life if you want the fullest set of Black Mesa perspectives. Skip them if your priority is the continuous Gordon Freeman storyline; none is required to understand Half-Life 2.

Half-Life: Opposing Force

Released on November 1, 1999, Opposing Force follows the Black Mesa incident through an invading soldier rather than Gordon. Valve’s handbook describes it as an expansion built around that alternate perspective. It is the most substantial of the optional early side stories and works naturally as the first add-on after the original campaign.

Its position is thematic, not a new chapter in Gordon’s path. You are revisiting the same crisis from another side, so there is no need to replay particular Half-Life levels immediately before starting it.

Half-Life: Blue Shift

Blue Shift was released on June 1, 2001. It casts you as Barney Calhoun, the Black Mesa security guard associated with Gordon Freeman, and shows another slice of the same emergency. Treat it as a compact companion story after Opposing Force or immediately after Half-Life if you prefer the shorter route.

Blue Shift does not bridge the original game to Half-Life 2. Its value is the additional viewpoint and setting detail, not a plot requirement.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Half-Life: Decay

Decay is an optional 2001 PlayStation 2 entry. It was designed around two playable scientists and is relevant mainly to readers seeking every officially released Black Mesa-era perspective. Because it is a side entry rather than a mainline sequel, omitting it does not create a gap in Gordon’s storyline.

Use a legitimate release or compatible platform if you choose to play it. There is no reason to delay Half-Life 2 while searching for Decay; the essential narrative remains intact without it.

When should I play Half-Life 2?

Start Half-Life 2 after Half-Life and any optional Black Mesa expansions. Valve describes it as the continuation in which Gordon Freeman returns to an occupied City 17, meets Alyx Vance, and joins the human resistance. Valve’s company timeline dates its release to 2004.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transition is intentionally large: the game moves from the original Black Mesa emergency to a broader occupation of Earth. You do not need to know every detail from Opposing Force, Blue Shift, or Decay to follow it. Those games provide parallel context, while Half-Life 2 resumes the principal Gordon Freeman narrative.

Do not count Half-Life: Source as a separate stop. Valve’s handbook characterizes it as a visual upgrade of the original Half-Life, so it is an alternate version of step one rather than an additional story chapter.

Why play Episode One immediately after Half-Life 2?

Half-Life 2: Episode One follows the events of Half-Life 2 directly. Valve’s official series description places Gordon and Alyx in a new threat affecting City 17, and Valve’s timeline dates the episode to 2006.

Start it while the ending of Half-Life 2 is fresh. It is not an independent sequel with a self-contained setup; its opening situation and character relationships assume that you have completed the preceding game. Treat it as the next movement of the same story, not as optional downloadable content.

Why play Episode Two after Episode One?

Half-Life 2: Episode Two is the direct follow-up to Episode One. Valve describes Gordon and Alyx confronting a portal threat that affects Earth’s resistance, and the company timeline dates the episode to 2007.

Keep the two episodes together in your schedule. Moving to unrelated side content between them can make the continuing objectives and character stakes harder to track, while playing them consecutively preserves the intended escalation from City 17 into the resistance’s wider conflict.

Should I play Half-Life: Alyx before or after Half-Life 2?

Alyx is chronologically between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, but the recommended first-playthrough position is after Episode Two. This is a choice about narrative presentation, not a change to the official timeline.

Valve’s description says that Alyx Vance and her father Eli mount an early resistance to the Combine’s occupation “between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.” Valve released the game on March 23, 2020 as a full-length virtual-reality title. Chronologically, it belongs after the original Black Mesa incident and before Gordon’s return in Half-Life 2.

Why save Alyx for last?

Playing the original release-era sequence first—Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two—lets the series introduce its world and relationships in the order most players encountered them. Alyx was developed and released much later as a prequel, so placing it last preserves that progression and gives its callbacks and character context more weight.

Valve does not publish a mandatory player order. Saving Alyx for last is therefore a practical recommendation for newcomers, not a canon rule. Choose chronology instead if experiencing the fictional timeline in order matters more to you than following the series’ release-era arc.

What hardware does Alyx require?

Alyx is built for virtual reality and works with any SteamVR-compatible headset, according to Valve. That makes it the only major hardware fork in this guide: every other essential story entry has a flat-screen route.

What is the strict chronological order?

For in-universe chronology, use this sequence:

  1. Half-Life
  2. Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay in any order after Half-Life; they overlap the Black Mesa incident from different viewpoints
  3. Half-Life: Alyx
  4. Half-Life 2
  5. Episode One
  6. Episode Two

The three side stories do not have a meaningful chapter-by-chapter ordering relative to one another. They all belong to the Black Mesa period, so the useful chronological distinction is between the incident itself, Alyx’s early resistance, and the later City 17 sequence.

What is the release order?

Release order shows how Valve expanded the series over time. It is useful for historical context and is almost identical to the recommended first-playthrough route, except that Alyx arrives much later as a prequel.

Release date or year Entry Role in the series
November 19, 1998 Half-Life Original mainline game
November 1, 1999 Half-Life: Opposing Force Black Mesa expansion
June 1, 2001 Half-Life: Blue Shift Black Mesa expansion
2001 Half-Life: Decay PlayStation 2 side entry
2004 Half-Life 2 Mainline continuation
2005 Half-Life 2: Lost Coast Technology-demo chapter
2006 Half-Life 2: Episode One Continuation of Half-Life 2
2007 Half-Life 2: Episode Two Continuation of Episode One
March 23, 2020 Half-Life: Alyx VR prequel between Half-Life and Half-Life 2

The dates above come from Valve and Steam listings. Decay’s 2001 placement reflects its PlayStation 2 release, while Lost Coast is listed as a technology-demo chapter rather than a required mainline installment.

What can I skip?

You can complete the central story without several products that are often mixed into play-order lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Uplink: an optional mini-campaign associated with the original Half-Life. Play it after Half-Life if you want bonus material.
  • Lost Coast: an optional 2005 Half-Life 2 technology demo, not a necessary narrative chapter.
  • Half-Life Deathmatch and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch: multiplayer products rather than story campaigns.
  • Half-Life: Source: an alternate visual version of the original game, not a new event in the timeline.

These extras are best treated as supplements after the relevant campaign. They should not interrupt the sequence of Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two.

Route Play this Best for Trade-off
Essential flat-screen Half-Life → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two Readers who want the main Gordon Freeman story with no detours Omits alternate Black Mesa viewpoints and Alyx
Complete first playthrough Half-Life → Opposing Force → Blue Shift → Decay → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two → Alyx Readers who want the broadest story route and can use VR for Alyx Longer and includes optional side perspectives
Strict chronology Half-Life → optional Black Mesa stories → Alyx → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two Readers who prioritize fictional timeline order Moves a later-developed VR prequel ahead of the original sequel arc
Release history Half-Life → Opposing Force → Blue Shift → Decay → Half-Life 2 → Lost Coast → Episode One → Episode Two → Alyx Readers interested in how the series arrived over time Includes a technology demo and treats Alyx as the final release

How this order balances story and chronology

The sequence gives priority to four practical criteria: continuity of Gordon Freeman’s main arc, preservation of the Black Mesa side stories as optional viewpoints, a clear separation between flat-screen and VR requirements, and the distinction between fictional chronology and release history. That is why Alyx is labeled a chronological prequel but recommended after Episode Two for newcomers.

The side stories are grouped after Half-Life because they revisit the same incident. The two episodes stay directly after Half-Life 2 because each continues the preceding game. Bonus products are kept outside the main route so a short technology demo or multiplayer mode cannot be mistaken for a required story chapter.

Common play-order mistakes

  • Putting Alyx first automatically: chronological placement is valid, but it is not the only sensible first-playthrough order.
  • Assuming every title is required: Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay add perspective; they do not unlock Half-Life 2’s plot.
  • Counting Source as a sequel: it is an alternate presentation of Half-Life.
  • Interrupting the episodes: Episode One and Episode Two are designed as consecutive continuations of Half-Life 2.
  • Buying VR hardware for the whole series: only Alyx requires a SteamVR-compatible headset; the essential flat-screen route does not.
  • Searching for a perfect order among the Black Mesa side stories: their overlapping viewpoints make a precise internal ordering unnecessary.

What should I play first if I have never touched the series?

Install and complete Half-Life first. Add Opposing Force and Blue Shift if you want the alternate viewpoints, include Decay only if you specifically want the PlayStation 2 side entry, then proceed through Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two. Finish with Alyx when you have compatible VR hardware; otherwise, the four flat-screen games still provide the essential narrative route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Half-Life: Source a separate game in the story order?

No. Valve describes Half-Life: Source as a visual upgrade of the original Half-Life, so it replaces the first entry rather than adding another event. Choose the version available on your platform and continue with the same sequence.

Does the original Half-Life release include anything besides the main campaign?

Valve’s anniversary release includes the Uplink mini-campaign along with Steam Deck support, updated graphics settings, additional multiplayer maps, and restored material. Uplink is bonus content, not a prerequisite for understanding the Black Mesa story.

Can I skip Decay if I do not have its original console?

Yes. Decay is an optional PlayStation 2 side entry and is not needed to follow Gordon Freeman’s storyline. Omitting it does not change where Half-Life 2 belongs in your sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Deathmatch versions count as chapters?

No. Half-Life Deathmatch and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch are multiplayer products, so they do not add story chapters to the single-player order. Treat them as separate modes to play whenever you want.
