For the least troublesome modern-PC playthrough, install Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition (BG:EE) and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition (BGII:EE), then play them in that order. The Enhanced Editions provide widescreen support and are sold for current desktop platforms; Steam lists Windows 11 64-bit, while Beamdog lists Windows, macOS and Linux support. BG:EE contains the original campaign and Tales of the Sword Coast. BGII:EE contains Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal. Beamdog’s product pages and the Steam listing are the safest starting points.
Siege of Dragonspear is optional and fits between the two games. You do not need the Enhanced Edition Trilogy mod to import a character or finish the saga.

Buy or otherwise obtain both Enhanced Editions separately, install them from your chosen store, and begin with BG:EE. They are related purchases, not one package in which buying the first automatically unlocks the second.
BG:EE includes the complete original Baldur’s Gate campaign plus Tales of the Sword Coast. BGII:EE includes Shadows of Amn and its concluding expansion, Throne of Bhaal. The modern editions update display support and other compatibility details without requiring an old CD-ROM release.

Beamdog describes the Enhanced Editions as updated for modern desktop platforms with widescreen support. Steam’s current game listing names Windows 11 64-bit, and Beamdog lists Windows, macOS and Linux for the desktop releases. Verify the store’s requirements for your exact operating system before installing.
Should I choose the Enhanced Editions or the original releases?
Choose the Enhanced Editions unless you specifically want the original interface, rules presentation or vintage release. They are the practical default for a current PC because they provide native widescreen and high-resolution display support.

Those bundled classics let you access the older releases without assuming that a decades-old physical disc will install cleanly on Windows 11. Do not confuse “the original game included in a digital package” with “an original disc is guaranteed to work.” Old installers, disc checks and display assumptions can require troubleshooting that the Enhanced Editions avoid.
Is Steam or GOG better for these games?
Both stores sell the Enhanced Editions. The better choice depends on whether you value an optional offline installer, inclusion of the classic releases, or integration with your existing game library.

Check the live regional price and bundle contents at checkout; prices change and are not reproduced here. An offline installer is not the same thing as cloud synchronization: you must use the relevant store’s cloud feature separately, if you want it.
Beamdog’s June 23, 2026 update changed Steam Cloud control to the Steam client and individual game settings, and stated that GOG Galaxy cloud saves now function properly. If an older guide tells you to use a separate in-game Steam Cloud switch, it may be describing an obsolete version.

What PC specifications do the Enhanced Editions require?
The published requirements are modest, but they are minimum specifications from the store listings, not a modern hardware benchmark.

These figures come from the Steam BG:EE listing and its related Enhanced Edition information, verified in 2026. Steam separately says its client supports Windows 10 and later, so do not treat Windows 7 or 8.1 as a recommendation for running the current Steam client even though those versions appear in the game’s historical requirements.
Steam also lists macOS 10.15 with an Intel or Apple Silicon dual-core processor and Ubuntu 18.04 or equivalent for the respective desktop listings. Beamdog advertises Windows, macOS and Linux support. Store requirements can change by platform, so check the listing for the operating system you intend to use.

You need a copy of each Enhanced Edition, enough storage for both installations, and a storefront account if you are using Steam, GOG or another supported seller. Then follow this order.
- Choose one storefront for the playthrough. Buying on the same platform keeps DLC and cloud-save management simpler. If you choose GOG, use Galaxy or its downloadable offline installers. If you choose Steam, install through the Steam client.
- Install BG:EE and BGII:EE. They are separate games. Installing BG:EE does not automatically install BGII:EE, and purchasing one does not automatically grant the other.
- Start Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. The base Enhanced Edition already contains the original campaign and Tales of the Sword Coast; there is no separate purchase for that original expansion in the edition.
- Learn the rules and controls. This is an isometric role-playing game using adapted second-edition Dungeons & Dragons rules and real-time combat with a pause command. It is not the turn-based combat system used by Baldur’s Gate 3. The BGII manual’s tutorial begins with character creation and teaches the core controls. You can also consult the downloadable BGII:EE manual.
- Optionally play Siege of Dragonspear. It is an expansion to BG:EE whose story takes place after the first game and before BGII. It requires BG:EE on the same platform. Skip it if you want to move directly from the original campaign to Shadows of Amn.
- Launch BGII:EE and begin Shadows of Amn. Its new-game flow lets you import an existing saved game or exported character, or create a new protagonist. Continue through Throne of Bhaal for the saga’s conclusion.
The game does not promise that every inventory item, party member or choice will transfer unchanged. Treat the import as continuation of the protagonist and story state, not as a guarantee that every detail from the earlier campaign will be preserved.
How does character import work between BG:EE and BGII:EE?
You can continue with the protagonist from the first game, but importing is optional. When you start Shadows of Amn, BGII:EE offers an existing saved-game or exported-character route as well as normal character creation.
Beamdog states that a Siege of Dragonspear character can be exported onward. If you skip that expansion, the first game’s protagonist can still continue into BGII:EE. You do not need a merged installation or a community mod merely to perform this handoff.

Keep your save files and exported-character files in a safe location before changing stores, reinstalling or adding mods. Cloud storage can help, but it is store-specific and should not be treated as a substitute for a local backup.
Do I need Siege of Dragonspear?
No. Siege of Dragonspear is an optional bridge between the two main games, not a prerequisite for understanding or completing the saga.
It requires the first Enhanced Edition on the same platform and is set after the BG:EE campaign. Play it if you want additional story content and a more explicit transition into BGII; skip it for the shortest route from BG:EE to Shadows of Amn. If you do play it, export the resulting character before beginning BGII:EE.
What is the Enhanced Edition Trilogy, and should I install it?
Enhanced Edition Trilogy (EET) is an optional community mod that merges BG:EE, Siege of Dragonspear and BGII:EE into a more continuous installation. It is not required for character import, and it is not the simplest first-time setup.
The documented EET process is BGII:EE-based. Its instructions caution that incompatible mods can break the installer or the game, and they specify DLCMerger before modding Steam or GOG installations that contain Siege of Dragonspear. The accessible readme still refers to game versions older than Beamdog’s June 23, 2026 patch 2.7, so do not assume compatibility with 2.7 or follow an old step-by-step guide blindly.
For a first playthrough, install the unmodified Enhanced Editions, finish the saga, and only then consider EET or other mods. Before modding a 2.7 installation, check the maintainer’s latest compatibility guidance rather than relying on an archived version number.
What changed in version 2.7?
Beamdog announced version 2.7 for the Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale Enhanced Editions on June 23, 2026. The announcement highlights native Apple Silicon support, improved Steam and GOG cloud-save support, and additional localizations.

If you are troubleshooting from an older article, first check the version shown by your storefront and game launcher. A guide written before patch 2.7 may describe a cloud-save control, platform behavior or mod compatibility state that no longer applies. The release announcement is available from Beamdog.

What should existing Beamdog customers do?
Beamdog’s former client and store retired in December 2025. Existing owners can use their Beamdog-store account to choose a Steam, GOG or Epic key for games and DLC they already own. Beamdog advises keeping the base game and its DLC keys on the same selected platform.
This is an ownership-recovery route, not a recommendation to buy a new copy through the retired store. Beamdog says existing games remain playable and multiplayer remains available. Follow the current instructions in the Beamdog store FAQ, since account options can change.
Can I play multiplayer across operating systems?
Beamdog advertises cross-platform multiplayer for the Enhanced Editions across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. That claim does not establish that every combination of platform versions, storefronts and mods has been tested together.
For the least ambiguous setup, use matching game versions and keep every participant on the same unmodified release until you have confirmed a session works. Add mods only after establishing a clean multiplayer connection; a modded installation can introduce compatibility problems that are unrelated to the base game.

What problems are most likely on a modern PC?
Most avoidable problems come from using an old guide, mixing storefront DLC, or adding mods before confirming the unmodified games work.
- Cloud saves are missing: confirm that cloud storage is enabled in the storefront’s current client settings. Steam Cloud is now managed by the Steam client and per-game settings; GOG cloud saves require Galaxy.
- DLC does not appear: confirm that the base game and DLC are owned and installed on the same selected platform. This is especially important for former Beamdog customers transferring keys.
- An old tutorial refers to a different menu: check whether it predates the June 2026 2.7 update. Interface and cloud controls may have moved.
- A modded install will not launch: remove or disable recently added mods and return to a clean installation before seeking mod-specific help. EET documentation warns that incompatible mods can break the installer or game.
- You expected turn-based combat: pause manually during real-time combat and consult the manual’s tutorial. These games use adapted second-edition D&D rules, not the turn-based system of Baldur’s Gate 3.
- A vintage disc will not install: use the Enhanced Edition or a digital classic release rather than assuming a physical installer supports Windows 11.
The published hardware requirements are low, so a generic PC “optimizer” is not a documented prerequisite for these games. Start with the game’s version, storefront settings, DLC ownership and mod state instead.

Is a physical collector’s edition a good way to start?
No, not if your goal is to obtain both games quickly. Beamdog documented a Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear Collector’s Edition PC containing a DVD with BG:EE and Siege of Dragonspear, plus a spiral-bound Adventurer’s Guide, cloth map and collectibles. The listed contents do not include BGII:EE.
It is a memorabilia option, not a substitute for buying BGII:EE. The old product page proves that the edition existed, but not that a complete, working copy is currently in stock. If you look for one, verify the seller’s contents, disc condition and activation requirements before paying.

Which order should a first-time player use?
Use this sequence:
- BG:EE main campaign.
- Optional: Siege of Dragonspear.
- BGII:EE: Shadows of Amn.
- BGII:EE: Throne of Bhaal.
This preserves the intended story progression while leaving the optional expansion genuinely optional. A new character in BGII:EE is also valid if you prefer to experience its opening without importing the earlier protagonist.

The recommendation prioritizes modern widescreen support, clearly documented desktop compatibility, complete campaign contents, straightforward installation and a supported character-import path. It also avoids treating an optional mod, a retired Beamdog storefront or an old physical disc as a requirement for a first playthrough.

Can I play the original Baldur’s Gate releases without buying old discs?
Yes. GOG says its BG:EE package includes Baldur’s Gate: The Original Saga and its BGII:EE package includes Baldur’s Gate 2 Complete. That gives you access to the classic releases digitally, while the Enhanced Editions remain the easier choice for modern display support.
Can I skip directly from Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition to Shadows of Amn?
