For a first playthrough, use a release-oriented story route: start with Resident Evil (preferably the 2002 remake), then play Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Code: Veronica, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and finally Resident Evil Requiem. Add Resident Evil 0 after the first game if you want the prequel, and insert Revelations and Revelations 2 for a fuller continuity. That is an editorial recommendation, not an order required by Capcom.

What is the best Resident Evil order for a first playthrough?
The release-oriented route is the easiest way to understand how the series changes while keeping its major character arcs coherent. Use one version of each story rather than playing an original and a remake back to back.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Resident Evil (2002 remake). This retells the 1996 mansion story in a more approachable form while preserving the starting point for the series’ central conspiracy.
- Resident Evil 2. It follows the Raccoon City outbreak through Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.
- Resident Evil 3. Its events overlap with 2, but playing it after 2 gives a cleaner first introduction to the city and its characters.
- Code: Veronica. Claire’s story continues after Raccoon City, and the game develops the wider Umbrella conflict before 4.
- Resident Evil 4. This is the next numbered-era shift and continues Leon’s story several years later.
- Resident Evil 5. It advances the bioterrorism storyline and follows directly from the events and relationships established in 4.
- Resident Evil 6. This is the next numbered main-series chapter, with several connected campaigns.
- Resident Evil 7 biohazard. Keep it after 6; it begins a new first-person perspective while remaining part of the main continuity.
- Resident Evil Village. It continues Ethan Winters’ story from 7, so separating the two weakens the character arc.
- Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom released it on February 27, 2026, and identifies it as the ninth main-series entry. Capcom names FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy as protagonists.
This route does not require every side title. It is a practical order for a first run, not a publisher-mandated checklist.
Should I play Resident Evil 0 first?
No. Resident Evil 0 is the earliest event chronologically, but beginning with the mansion story better reflects how the series introduced its world and keeps the prequel optional.

Capcom dates 0 to July 23, 1998, one day before the original Resident Evil story. Playing it immediately after the first game lets you recognize the setting, organizations and recurring ideas before the prequel fills in earlier events. If you prefer strict chronology and do not mind starting with a prequel, place 0 first; neither choice breaks the continuity.
Do I play Resident Evil 2 or 3 first?
Play Resident Evil 2 first for the simplest first-time route. Choose 3 before 2 only if matching the opening fictional date matters more to you than a clean game-by-game introduction.
Capcom’s timeline places Resident Evil 3 at the start of September 28, 1998, while Resident Evil 2 begins on September 29. The stories overlap: Capcom describes the Resident Evil 3 remake as starting one day before 2 and ending during Raccoon City’s final days. Because of that overlap, no whole-game sequence can reproduce every scene in exact minute-by-minute order. The practical compromise is 2 then 3; the chronological compromise is 3 then 2.
Where does Code: Veronica go?
Put Code: Veronica after Resident Evil 3 and before Resident Evil 4. Capcom dates it to December 1998, making it the next major continuation of Claire’s post-Raccoon City story.

Skipping it produces a shorter numbered route, but it also removes an important Claire chapter and part of the Umbrella-focused narrative. It is particularly valuable if your priority is character continuity rather than only the numbered releases.
Where do Revelations and Revelations 2 fit?
Insert Resident Evil Revelations between 4 and 5, then play Revelations 2 between 5 and 6. Both are optional for a first run, but they have clear places in the larger chronology.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Revelations
Capcom places the first Revelations in 2005, after 4 and before 5. It expands the series’ bioterrorism thread without being a prerequisite for understanding the numbered games.
Revelations 2
Revelations 2 takes place in 2011, after 5 and before 6. Add it when you want more continuity around Claire and the supporting cast; defer it when you want to stay on the main numbered path.

What is the strict chronological order?
For fictional event dates rather than release history, use this sequence:
- Resident Evil 0 — July 23, 1998.
- Resident Evil — July 24, 1998.
- Resident Evil 3 — begins September 28, 1998.
- Resident Evil 2 — begins September 29, 1998.
- Code: Veronica — December 1998.
- Resident Evil 4 — autumn 2004.
- Resident Evil Revelations — 2005.
- Resident Evil 5 — March 2009.
- Resident Evil Revelations 2 — 2011.
- Resident Evil 6 — June 2013.
- Resident Evil 7 biohazard — 2017.
- Resident Evil Village — February 2021.
- Resident Evil Requiem — after the older core games as the newest released main-series installment; Capcom’s reviewed timeline does not provide a precise fictional year.
These dates describe events inside the fiction, not the years the games launched. The Raccoon City overlap remains the one major reason a strict list cannot align every playable sequence perfectly.
Do the remakes replace the originals?
For an ordinary playthrough, yes: let one version occupy each story slot. A remake is a different release of an existing event, not a new numbered incident that should be inserted beside the original.
The first game launched in 1996, while Capcom lists its 2002 remake separately. The same release-versus-remake distinction applies to Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4. Choose the edition available on your platform and the style you prefer; playing both versions is an optional comparison project, not a continuity requirement.

What if I only want the numbered games?
Use the 2002 version of Resident Evil, then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 biohazard, Village and Requiem. Add Code: Veronica later if Claire’s arc or the Umbrella plot feels incomplete.
This compact route omits the two Revelations games and the prequel. It is easier to finish, but it is not the same as a complete character-continuity route: Code: Veronica has a defined place between the Raccoon City games and 4, while the Revelations titles bridge later numbered entries.
Where does Resident Evil Requiem fit?
Requiem belongs at the end of an October 2026 guide because it is already released, not an upcoming game. Capcom’s February 27, 2026 announcement calls it the ninth main-series entry, and a March 22 anniversary message from executive producer Jun Takeuchi refers to it as having been released the previous month.
Do not infer its fictional year from its February 2026 launch date. Capcom’s published chronology reviewed for this guide reaches Village in 2021 but does not assign Requiem a specific in-universe year. The game returns to Raccoon City and features Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy, but those details do not establish a calendar placement.

For buying, the phrase “Resident Evil Requiem PS5 Standard Edition” is an evidenced edition name in Capcom’s U.S. promotion, not proof of current retailer stock or disc contents. Capcom has also announced a digital-storefront Resident Evil Remake Trilogy grouping Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition; confirm the storefront and regional availability before purchasing. Capcom lists Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16, 2026, so check the relevant store for the current listing.
How should I handle other spin-offs?
Keep Outbreak and the Chronicles games optional. Capcom places them in the wider timeline, but the Chronicles titles revisit or span earlier incidents in an on-rails format rather than functioning as required steps between the main entries.

How we picked these routes
- Accessibility: a first-time player gets the series’ introductions in a release-oriented progression.
- Event chronology: the alternate list follows Capcom’s dated fictional timeline, including the Raccoon City overlap.
- Character continuity: Code: Veronica and the Revelations games stay visible instead of being treated as disposable extras.
- Edition clarity: originals and remakes share a story slot, so readers can select one playable version.
- Currency: Requiem is included as a released ninth main-series entry, while its unknown fictional year is left unassigned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I skip every game except the numbered entries?
Yes, the numbered-spine route is coherent on its own. The main cost is missing Claire’s continuation in Code: Veronica and the connective material supplied by the two Revelations games.
Is the 1996 Resident Evil still required if I play the 2002 remake?
No. The 2002 release is a separate remake of the same opening story, so a newcomer can use it as the first-game slot. The 1996 version is mainly of interest if you want to study the series’ original design and release history.
Why can’t the Raccoon City games be put in perfect chronological order?
Their fictional dates overlap rather than occurring one after another. Resident Evil 3 starts before Resident Evil 2 but continues after its opening events, so alternating sections would be the only way to approximate a scene-level timeline.

Does Requiem have a confirmed story year?
Not in the Capcom chronology covered here. Its February 2026 release date and its return to Raccoon City establish publication and setting details, but they do not prove a calendar year inside the fiction.
