If you want the Milano’s crew banter, a starship to call home, and a galaxy-sized crisis, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is the closest match—and the best starting point if you have not played it. It is a funny, linear action-adventure rather than a sprawling role-playing game, though: for deeper choices and companion quests, look next to The Outer Worlds or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. For a different kind of companion-focused story, try Dragon Age or Baldur’s Gate 3. This guide separates those different kinds of “like Mass Effect” instead of treating them as interchangeable.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Checked
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Closest match for a funny, cinematic space crew Single-player third-person action; about 16–22 hours Nov 2026
The Outer Worlds Companions, a ship hub, quests, and space-RPG choices 25–40+ hours, according to Eneba Nov 2026
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Classic BioWare crew, romance, and morality choices 2003 RPG with real-time-with-pause combat Nov 2026
The Outer Worlds 2 A newer, more open take on satirical space RPGs Standalone story; more open than its predecessor Nov 2026
Dragon Age: Inquisition Companion relationships and consequential decisions outside sci-fi Fantasy party RPG with romance and regional choices Nov 2026
Baldur’s Gate 3 Deep companion arcs and meaningful decisions Turn-based Dungeons & Dragons RPG Nov 2026
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Cinematic space-opera adventure without RPG-heavy systems Souls-like lightsaber combat; small crew aboard a ship Nov 2026
Starfield Exploration, ship travel, and a broad space sandbox Open-ended space RPG Nov 2026
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Choice-heavy space-party role-playing Isometric, turn-based combat and a grimdark setting Nov 2026
Cyberpunk 2077 Reactive sci-fi storytelling and romance in a big city Solo-character RPG, not a squad game Nov 2026
Tales from the Borderlands Sarcastic humor and character banter Narrative adventure, not a shooter Nov 2026

What makes a game feel like both Guardians and Mass Effect?

The overlap is not simply “science fiction” or “a team of heroes.” The strongest match combines a memorable crew, frequent character interaction, a sense of traveling together, and a cinematic threat that gives the adventure momentum. The balance between those ingredients and player freedom is what separates the recommendations below.

Guardians is the direct fit for the ship-as-home, squad banter, and found-family side. You play Peter Quill, or Star-Lord, while Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot fight under AI control. In combat, you call their abilities through a power wheel and can trigger attacks together. Between missions, you return to the Milano and talk with the crew. That rhythm—mission, crew, next crisis—is the part that most resembles checking in with the Normandy team.

The important difference is agency. Mass Effect lets players build a character, shape Shepard’s personality, pursue romances, and carry decisions across a sprawling RPG trilogy. Guardians has a fixed lead and a more authored story. Its dialogue and mission choices can change scenes and affect parts of the finale, but they do not offer the same breadth of role-playing or long-term consequences. It has no loyalty-mission structure like Mass Effect 2, and its combat has no cover system.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That makes Guardians the best pick when you miss the crew’s chemistry more than the RPG systems. If you want to make more consequential decisions, choose a role-playing game below; if you want space travel and exploration above all, Starfield is a better fit. The list is ranked by how directly each game answers a different part of the request, not by a claim that one style is universally better.

Is Guardians of the Galaxy the closest game to Mass Effect?

Yes, if by “closest” you mean a cinematic space adventure centered on a close-knit crew and their ship. Polygon’s Austin Manchester called it “the most Mass Effect-coded game of the generation” in April 2026, while also stressing that the resemblance has limits.

What you get from the match

  • A crew you spend time with: The Guardians banter during missions and have conversations aboard the Milano, rather than appearing only as combat support.
  • A clear squad-leader role: Quill directs the team’s special attacks while remaining the only character you control directly.
  • A space-opera crisis: The plot builds toward a galaxy-scale threat, although its religious cult and cosmic danger are not a retread of the Reapers.
  • A distinct tone: Humor, found-family drama, licensed 1970s and 1980s songs, and an original in-universe Star-Lord Band album give it a lighter, more idiosyncratic voice.

What you give up

It is a compact, linear action-adventure, not a sprawling role-playing game. Eneba estimates a 16–22-hour average playtime, while Polygon described it as a tight 20-hour game; Polygon contrasted that with Mass Effect campaigns that can run upward of 40 hours. The 16–22-hour figure is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time, and optional exploration or a different pace can change an individual run.

The game has 16 story chapters, according to Radio Times. Choices include mission situations such as deciding whether to pretend to sell Groot or Rocket to Lady Hellbender, as well as decisions involving Worldmind and Cosmo that can influence the finale. Those branches give the story some variation; they do not turn Quill into a customizable, player-defined counterpart to Shepard.

Reception is strong on Steam: Steambase’s Steam-data snapshot, last updated October 29, 2026, lists a “Very Positive” rating of 94/100 from 45,646 reviews, including 42,794 positive and 2,852 negative reviews. That is a player score, not a critic score. Critic scores vary by platform: OpenCritic is 8.2, recommended by 86% of 185 critic reviews, while Metacritic’s later listing gives separate scores of 84 for Xbox Series X, 80 for PlayStation 5, and 78 for PC. The 58 for Switch refers to the 2021 cloud version, not a native Switch port.

Steambase listed a $59.99 Steam list price and an observed $8.99 price on October 29, 2026. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a promise of today’s price: discounts change by storefront and region. Polygon reported an 85% discount on the Nintendo eShop, Steam, and Xbox store in April 2026, while PlayStation was full price at that point and was frequently discounted. Check your own store before buying.

Which version should you consider?

The original game launched on October 26, 2021, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch. The original Switch release was cloud-only, so it is not equivalent to a native install on the console. If you are buying for a Switch 2, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition is scheduled to launch November 5, 2026, as a Switch 2 exclusive. It adds 1980s-themed outfits and a new Star-Lord Band song. Its announced docked modes are 30 frames per second at 1440p in quality mode or 40 fps at 1080p in performance mode; handheld mode is 30 fps. It is planned for the eShop and as a physical Game-Key Card.

Which games offer the best space-crew RPG after Guardians?

Start with The Outer Worlds if you want a modern space RPG with companions and a ship hub; choose KOTOR for classic BioWare crew relationships and morality choices. The Outer Worlds 2 is the newer, more open option, but it is not a replacement for what the first game does well.

1. The Outer Worlds: the best modern crew-and-choices match

Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds is the easiest recommendation if you want to keep the ship, companions, and branching RPG structure while leaving behind Guardians’ fixed lead. The Unreliable serves as a home base, companions can join the journey, and their loyalty quests give relationships more room to develop. Planetary stops and the game’s biting corporate satire make the setting feel different from the more earnest space opera of Mass Effect.

It is not a huge galaxy-spanning epic on the same scale as the trilogy. Polygon’s comparison specifically notes that the ship is not Normandy-sized, and Eneba estimates a 25–40-plus-hour playtime. The game’s strength is that crew quests and player choices sit inside a space-RPG framework; its trade-off is that the world feels smaller and more satirical than Mass Effect.

Choose it over Guardians when agency and character builds matter more than constant cinematic banter. Choose Guardians when you want the tighter, more authored story and a cast whose dynamics drive nearly every scene.

2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: the classic BioWare answer

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) is the structural ancestor for much of what players later enjoyed in Mass Effect: a recruited crew, a ship, romance, consequential decisions, and a journey between worlds. It is a strong choice if you want the BioWare role-playing framework more than modern third-person action.

Combat is real-time with pause rather than a cover-based shooter, and the presentation is dated compared with contemporary releases. Those are meaningful trade-offs, but the central appeal—assembling companions, learning their stories, and deciding what kind of hero to be—remains unusually close to the RPG side of Mass Effect. Polygon’s 2026 list gives the game’s platforms as Android, iOS, Mac, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. A remake remains in development at Saber Interactive, with no release date announced in Polygon’s 2026 coverage.

3. The Outer Worlds 2: a newer, more open alternative

The Outer Worlds 2 is a sensible starting point for players who want a newer, more open take on Obsidian’s satirical space RPG. ScreenRant described it in July 2026 as a bigger, more open sequel with a disconnected story, so it does not require treating the first game as mandatory homework.

There is a reason to consider both games rather than assuming the sequel is automatically an upgrade. In November 2025, PC Games Hardware, citing Metacritic, reported launch Metascores of 85 for the original on PS4 and Xbox One and 82 on PC, compared with 83 for the sequel on Xbox Series and 81 on PS5 and PC. The same coverage, citing SteamDB, reported peak concurrent Steam players of 20,349 for the first game and about 13,264 for the second. Those figures describe launch reception and Steam concurrency, not a complete measure of quality or current popularity; they do show that a newer entry did not simply eclipse the original in those snapshots.

4. Starfield: choose exploration over tight squad drama

Starfield offers space travel, ships, recruitable crew, and shooting, but its appeal is exploration across a broad sandbox rather than the tightly written, banter-heavy show that Mass Effect can feel like. Polygon’s 2026 list names PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X as platforms. Its assessment is that companion writing does not reach Mass Effect’s level.

Pick it when you want room to wander, visit places, and make the trip your own. Skip it as a direct Guardians substitute if the main thing you want is a constant sense of a small crew reacting to one another and to the story.

5. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader: the party-RPG branch

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is for fans who value companion webs, hard decisions, and a spacefaring party more than third-person action. The ship-to-ship battles and choice-heavy story offer a clear space-RPG connection, but the combat is isometric and turn-based, and the setting is grimdark. That is a far harsher tone than the found-family comedy of Guardians.

Which games have the best companion writing if the setting can change?

Try Dragon Age or Baldur’s Gate 3 if your favorite part of Mass Effect is learning a crew’s history, earning trust, and facing decisions with emotional consequences. Neither is a space shooter, but both make relationships and party dynamics central.

6. Dragon Age: Inquisition: the closest fantasy-party substitute

Dragon Age: Inquisition translates the companion-and-politics appeal into fantasy. Its party members—including Cassandra, Dorian, and Varric—give the story a distinctive group dynamic, while romance and choices about regions provide space for role-playing. Dragon Age: Origins is also worth considering: it emphasizes campfire companion scenes, political alliances, and a more tactical party structure.

Neither game reproduces Mass Effect’s cover-shooter combat or spacefaring setting. They are good choices when what you miss is the feeling that a party’s personalities, loyalties, and disagreements matter to the adventure.

7. Baldur’s Gate 3: the strongest choice for consequential party relationships

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a strong recommendation if the crew relationships and decisions mattered more than the sci-fi scenery. Its companion development and consequential choices are the draw; its turn-based Dungeons & Dragons combat is a sharp departure from both Guardians’ action and Mass Effect’s shooter-RPG blend.

This is not the pick for someone seeking a starship or a galaxy map. It is the pick for someone who wants to spend time with a varied party, understand what motivates them, and see relationships develop through decisions.

8. Cyberpunk 2077: a reactive sci-fi world, but no squad

Cyberpunk 2077, released in 2020, and its Phantom Liberty expansion from 2023 offer a detailed science-fiction setting, romance, and a story that responds to player choices. Eneba estimates 40–100-plus hours and gives the game an Enebameter score of 10/10 after its overhaul; that is Eneba’s rating, not a universal critic or player score.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The central limitation for this particular request is structural: you play a solo character, not a squad leader with a crew. Polygon describes Night City as a Citadel-like setting but explicitly notes that you do not have a squad. Choose this for a reactive sci-fi city and character-driven RPG, not to recreate Normandy conversations.

Which cinematic space adventures are closer to Guardians than to Mass Effect?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the best fit if you want a cinematic space-opera journey and a small crew, but not companion-command combat or deep RPG choices. Tales from the Borderlands is a better match for irreverent banter than for action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order: movie-like adventure, different combat

Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order follows Cal Kestis and a small group aboard the Stinger Mantis, including Cere, Greez, and BD-1, with Merrin joining later. Its cinematic set pieces and shipboard crew make it a reasonable pick for the space-adventure side of Guardians.

The crucial difference is the combat: it is souls-like lightsaber action, not a squad shooter. You do not direct a team’s attacks the way Quill does, and the dialogue branching is limited. Choose it if you want a focused Star Wars adventure with a crew around the edges; if it lands, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the sequel.

10. Tales from the Borderlands: banter without the gunplay

Tales from the Borderlands is a narrative adventure built around sarcastic humor, chaotic situations, and character banter. Those qualities can scratch the comic-team itch, but it is not a shooter or an RPG with a companion-command system. It belongs on this list for the writing and tone, not because it recreates the Milano’s combat loop.

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is another option if you specifically want more of the same fictional team. It is a 2017 story game, not a combat successor to Eidos-Montréal’s action-adventure.

What should you watch for if you want a future Mass Effect-style game?

Two announced 2027 games are built around the space-crew shooter fantasy, but neither is available to play in November 2026. Treat them as watchlist options, not substitutes you can buy today.

Exodus: a squad-and-ship game with Mass Effect veterans

Exodus is scheduled for April 7, 2027, for PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, according to Polygon’s 2026 coverage. Archetype Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast are developing it. Polygon’s two-hour preview described cover-based shooting, two squadmates directed through a pause-and-aim ability wheel, companion affinity, a morality meter, and a ship of your own. You play Jun Aslan, and narrative director Drew Karpyshyn worked on the original Mass Effect. Those are promising similarities, but preview details are not proof of how the finished game will play.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn: a squad shooter in a grounded space setting

Owlcat Games’ The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is slated for spring 2027 on PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Polygon’s Gamescom session described a custom character and twin, two squadmates, cover gunfights, and a misfit crew with BioWare-like inspiration. Owlcat’s creative director told Polygon that Mass Effect is a key influence. The release window is broader than Exodus’s stated date, so neither timing nor final feature details should be treated as settled beyond the announced information.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic: a longer-range possibility

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025. Casey Hudson, who worked on KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy, is attached through Arcanaut Studios. It is described as a single-player narrative action RPG with a Light/Dark pull for PC and consoles, but it has no release date. Hudson has said it should arrive before 2030; that is not a firm launch window.

Which popular games are not really Guardians or Mass Effect substitutes?

Some games match one surface feature—superheroes, teamwork, or space—without offering the crew-led story that defines this comparison. They may still be enjoyable, but the distinction helps set expectations.

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the Batman: Arkham games: Stronger fits for single-hero superhero spectacle than for a starship crew, companion conversations, or galaxy-scale role-playing.
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Marvel Rivals: Team combat is not the same as a story-driven, single-player crew adventure.
  • No Man’s Sky: A vast space to explore, but not the character-writing-led crew drama sought by fans of the Normandy or Milano.
  • XCOM 2: Squad tactics and the possibility of losing soldiers, but not the same emphasis on companion story arcs.
  • Halo: A major science-fiction shooter series, but not a companion-focused RPG or ship-as-home crew sim.

How were these games selected?

The recommendations prioritize the specific overlap between Guardians and Mass Effect: companion chemistry, a crew or party that travels together, a ship or hub when available, cinematic storytelling, meaningful choices, and space-opera stakes. Games are separated by what they share rather than treated as clones. That means a story adventure can qualify for its banter, while a role-playing game can qualify for its companions and choices even when it has fantasy combat instead of a starship shooter.

For the most direct match, play Guardians of the Galaxy. For a modern space crew RPG, choose The Outer Worlds; for classic BioWare structure, choose KOTOR. If you care more about relationships and consequential decisions than sci-fi, head to Dragon Age or Baldur’s Gate 3. If your priority is exploration, choose Starfield; if it is cinematic action, try Fallen Order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official Guardians of the Galaxy sequel?

No sequel has been officially confirmed. As of the latest reporting summarized here, neither Eidos-Montréal nor Marvel Games had commented on plans for one, so interest around a new edition should not be mistaken for an announcement.

How many people have tried Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy?

Developers said 8 million people had tried the game by 2022, according to Level Up’s 2026 reporting. That figure includes people who accessed it through subscriptions or trials and should not be read as 8 million paid copies sold.

Is the Switch 2 physical edition a regular game cartridge?

The announced physical Encore Edition uses a Game-Key Card. It is also planned for sale through the Switch 2 eShop.

Can I play Guardians of the Galaxy without knowing the movies?

Yes. The game uses an original comic-inspired continuity rather than a one-to-one recasting of the films, and it gives its version of the team its own relationships and backstory. The game and its cast have also referred to this continuity as the VCU.
