Start with Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition if you want the series’ richest introduction and plan to play the story in order. Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition – Game of the Year Edition if you want one older game before The Veilguard. Choose The Veilguard itself if you only want a modern action RPG on current hardware. Dragon Age II is best experienced between Origins and Inquisition rather than as a first stop.
There are four mainline games, each with a new protagonist and a largely self-contained plot. Your platform, tolerance for older design, preferred combat style and interest in Solas determine the most sensible starting point.

Which Dragon Age game should you play first?
Origins is the best first game for most people who want to understand why Dragon Age has such a devoted following. Its six origin stories establish the Grey Wardens, the Blight, the mage–Templar conflict and the political choices that echo through later games. The Ultimate Edition also gathers the expansion and downloadable stories you need for a coherent first playthrough.
There are two sensible exceptions. If your immediate goal is The Veilguard, play Inquisition and its Trespasser expansion; that is the shortest route to understanding Solas and the crisis that begins the newer game. If you only have a PlayStation 5 or simply want a contemporary action RPG, start with The Veilguard. BioWare designed it as a standalone continuation, although earlier games add emotional context.

What is the Dragon Age release and story order?
For the four mainline games, release order and story order are the same. Play them as follows:
- Dragon Age: Origins — released 3 November 2009 in North America for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
- Dragon Age II — released 8 March 2011 in North America.
- Dragon Age: Inquisition — released 18 November 2014 in North America.
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard — released 31 October 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X|S.
Novels, comics and mobile spin-offs such as Heroes of Dragon Age, Dragon Age Legends and Dragon Age Journeys are optional. They are not prerequisites for understanding the games.
What should you know about each game before choosing?
Dragon Age: Origins (2009): the lore-first starting point
You play a custom Grey Warden during Ferelden’s Fifth Blight. The six origins—Dalish Elf, Dwarf Commoner, City Elf, Mage, Human Noble and Dwarf Noble—change your opening, relationships and how the world reacts to you. Combat is real-time with pause: stop the action, queue abilities, issue party orders and switch between characters.
Origins is where the series’ central ideas are clearest. The Grey Wardens, darkspawn, the Blight and the mage–Templar tension introduced here remain important later. ScreenRant calls beginning with Origins the best way to start, while IGN says the full Dragon Age experience requires playing it at some point because player choices are a core attraction.
The trade-off is age. Its 2009 interface, graphics and combat can feel slow, and IGN warns that the Windows version may run poorly without configuration changes or community fixes. Console editions scored lower than the PC version. Steam’s listing records 85% of 21,037 English reviews as Very Positive as of 29 October 2026, and the PC release has a 91 Metacritic score; those figures describe reception, not a promise that the old technology will suit everyone.
Buy Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition. It contains the base game, the approximately 20-hour Awakening expansion and nine content packs: The Stone Prisoner, Warden’s Keep, Return to Ostagar, Feastday Gifts, The Darkspawn Chronicles, Feastday Pranks, Leliana’s Song, The Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt. The release is available through Steam, the EA app and Xbox. If you already own the base game, EA’s classic-games support page makes the Origins and Dragon Age II downloadable content available at no extra charge.

Dragon Age II (2011): a focused, divisive middle chapter
Dragon Age II follows Hawke, a Fereldan refugee who becomes the Champion of Kirkwall over roughly a decade. The story is framed as Varric recounting events to Cassandra. Combat is quicker and more action-oriented than in Origins, while pause-and-command controls remain.

Almost the entire game takes place in one city. BioWare had only 14–16 months to make it, and repeated environments are the most common criticism. Critics were generally favorable, but player reactions were polarized. The compressed setting also gives the game unusually strong focus on friendships, family and the mage–Templar conflict that erupts into Inquisition.
Hawke returns in Inquisition, and Varric becomes a continuing series figure. The Legacy expansion is the one add-on Kotaku treats as essential to the critical path. The Dragon Age II – Ultimate Edition is sold for Windows and Xbox; there is no native PS5 edition in current storefront listings.

Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014): the best single prequel to The Veilguard
You play the Inquisitor, who must close a breach in the Veil and build an organization across Ferelden and Orlais. The game offers large semi-open regions, a war table, mounts, nine companions plus advisers and a tactical camera alongside action combat. Qunari are playable for the first time.
Inquisition is the strongest one-game lead-in to The Veilguard. Solas is a companion from the beginning and is revealed as Fen’Harel, the Dread Wolf, in the post-credits sequence and Trespasser. The newer game opens with Solas conducting a ritual to tear down the Veil, so the relationship and revelation have far more weight if you have lived through Inquisition.
Kotaku describes a critical-path run—main story and companion routes at your home base, while skipping most open-world collection— as roughly 30–40 hours. That is a practical preparation route, not a completionist estimate. Inquisition is “easily twice the size” of Origins, according to Pro Game Guides, and its optional activities can add substantially more time.
Choose Inquisition – Game of the Year Edition. It bundles the base game with all post-launch content and was released 6 October 2015. Play Trespasser after the main story; IGN calls it probably the most important non-mainline release for setting up The Veilguard. Add The Descent if dwarven history and Titans interest you—Inverse estimates it at three to four hours and notes that its lore is relevant to the newer game. Jaws of Hakkon is optional story content.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024): the modern jump-in
You play Rook, recruited by Varric and Harding to stop Solas’s ritual. Interrupting it frees the ancient elven gods Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. The structure uses curated hubs and mission areas rather than Inquisition-style open-world regions, with seven companions and an action system that includes a pause-to-command wheel.
BioWare explicitly built The Veilguard so previous games were not required. Creative Director John Epler told Game Informer, as quoted by Pocket-lint:

“One of the things we wanted to make sure with Veilguard is that it’s respectful and referential to previous games without feeling like you needed to have played Inquisition, or [Dragon Age 2] or [Dragon Age: Origins] to understand what’s going on.”
“While there are references, there are moments that we have callbacks, it really is its own story, its own continuation with a different cast, with different characters. Historically Dragon Age always has had a different cast per game, so that gives us a lot of freedom in terms of what we want to lean on in the past, and what we want to bring in that’s new and forward-facing.”

TheGamer’s post-launch assessment is that skipping Inquisition costs nostalgia and compassion for returning characters, not basic plot comprehension. IGN’s review likewise says earlier decisions have “never mattered less”; Hawke is only briefly mentioned and the Warden does not appear at Weisshaupt.
This is the only native current-generation entry and runs on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows. It was added to Xbox Game Pass in August 2025. HowLongToBeat data cited by IGN puts a main-story run with side quests at upwards of 88 hours, while IGN’s review estimates about 100 hours for near-completion. There is no story expansion: IGN reported in November 2024 that BioWare had no plans for Veilguard DLC.
Which starting point fits your platform and play style?
If you want the complete Dragon Age experience
- Play Origins – Ultimate Edition.
- Continue with Awakening and Witch Hunt.
- Play Dragon Age II – Ultimate Edition, including Legacy.
- Play Inquisition – Game of the Year Edition.
- Finish the Trespasser expansion before starting The Veilguard.
This order lets you experience the setting’s major conflicts and see the largest possible context for recurring characters. It is also the order recommended by the series’ release history, not a fan-made chronology.
If you want one game before The Veilguard
Choose Inquisition, follow its main story and companion quests, then play Trespasser. Kotaku calls it the bare minimum before The Veilguard because Solas’s decisions set the newer plot in motion. Add The Descent only if Titans and dwarven lore are a priority.

If you only want a current-generation RPG
Start with The Veilguard. IGN describes it as the most accessible Dragon Age gameplay and the only entry that was designed specifically for PC and new-generation consoles. You can recreate an Inquisitor and select three Inquisition decisions during character creation, so you are not locked out of the limited world-state references the game uses.
If you own only a PlayStation 5
Start with Inquisition, which is available as a PS4 game playable on PS5, or go directly to The Veilguard on PS5. Origins and Dragon Age II are listed as Xbox and Windows purchases rather than native PS5 games, so insisting on the original order may require another platform.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If older tactical combat is your priority
Begin with Origins. You can pause frequently, script party behavior and control every companion directly. Inquisition retains a tactical camera but feels more action-oriented; The Veilguard is the furthest from the original formula because companions cannot be directly controlled and do not have conventional health bars. If Rook dies, the encounter is lost.
How do combat, structure and protagonists change between games?
| Game | Combat | World structure | Player character | Choice handling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Origins | Real-time with pause, party tactics and direct companion control | Hub-and-spoke dark-fantasy campaign | Custom Grey Warden | Choices can be imported into Dragon Age II |
| Dragon Age II | Faster action with pause commands | Mostly one city over ten years | Hawke, a fixed human protagonist | Choices feed into Inquisition through Dragon Age Keep |
| Inquisition | Action combat with an optional tactical camera | Large semi-open regions and a war table | Custom Inquisitor | Dragon Age Keep sets the earlier world state |
| The Veilguard | Real-time action, companion commands and pause wheel; no direct companion control | Curated hubs and mission areas | Custom Rook | Three Inquisition decisions and an Inquisitor recreation are selected at character creation |
Every game changes its lead character: Warden, Hawke, Inquisitor and Rook. That design is why BioWare can make each entry approachable without pretending the previous protagonists never mattered.
How much do earlier choices matter in The Veilguard?
They matter far less than in earlier transitions. Origins saves could flow into Dragon Age II, and Dragon Age Keep later let players define who ruled, who survived and how the mage–Templar conflict ended for Inquisition. The Veilguard does not use Keep in the same way; its character creator asks for three Inquisition decisions and lets new players define them without a prior save.
That system preserves a few callbacks, not a fully branching continuation. IGN’s review says prior decisions have never mattered less. Playing Inquisition and Trespasser is therefore about emotional and thematic payoff—especially your history with Solas—rather than satisfying a technical requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the shortest honest DLC route?
Do not treat every add-on as mandatory. For a focused preparation run, use this sequence:
- Origins: base game, Awakening and Witch Hunt.
- Dragon Age II: base game and Legacy.
- Inquisition: base game and Trespasser.
- Optional: The Descent for Titans and dwarven lore; Jaws of Hakkon for an additional Inquisition story; Leliana’s Song as a prequel vignette.
The Missing comic is the most direct Veilguard-era tie-in if you want to read something after the games, but it is not a substitute for Inquisition or Trespasser. The Veilguard has no expansion to add later.
How long should a beginner budget?
The series has no single reliable completion time because optional companions, exploration and difficulty settings change the total. The useful planning numbers are specific to the routes described by published sources:
- Inquisition critical path with companion routes: about 30–40 hours, according to Kotaku.
- The Descent: about three to four hours, according to Inverse.
- The Veilguard main story with side quests: upwards of 88 hours, based on HowLongToBeat figures cited by IGN.
- The Veilguard near-completion: about 100 hours, according to IGN’s review.
Origins is shorter than Inquisition by the relative estimate from Pro Game Guides, but it remains a full-length role-playing game. Avoid choosing it solely because it is “quick”; choose it because its systems and lore are what you want.

Yes, but understand that you are entering a closed four-game series. The Veilguard is described as BioWare’s final Dragon Age game and the studio’s final release before its 2026 shutdown; BioWare has shifted attention to Mass Effect 5. That ends the expectation of a fifth numbered entry, but it does not remove the value of the existing campaigns.
For the best writing-and-choice arc, start with Origins. For the most efficient Solas context, start with Inquisition and Trespasser. For a PS5-only or current-generation action-RPG purchase, start with The Veilguard and use its character creator to set the small amount of history it remembers.
How these starting points were ranked
The recommendations weigh four practical criteria: how much foundational lore a game establishes, how directly it prepares you for The Veilguard, whether it runs on the reader’s platform and how approachable its combat and structure are in 2026. Release order remains the reference path; the alternative starts exist for readers with different hardware, time limits or genre preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play Dragon Age: Origins before Inquisition?
No. Inquisition includes Dragon Age Keep, which lets you define major Origins and Dragon Age II outcomes without importing a save. You will recognize more historical references after playing Origins, but the Inquisition plot and its companions are understandable on their own.
Should I play Awakening before Dragon Age II?
Yes, if you are following the full-series route. Awakening continues the Warden’s story after Origins and supplies the most useful bridge into later Grey Warden references; it is not required to understand Hawke’s opening in Dragon Age II.
Can I change the three world-state choices in The Veilguard later?
The game asks you to select those Inquisition decisions during character creation, so review them before committing to a campaign. This limited setup is separate from the older Dragon Age Keep workflow and does not recreate every previous choice.
What should I read after finishing the games?
The two-volume World of Thedas boxed set provides reference material on the setting, while novels such as The Stolen Throne and The Calling expand its history. The Missing comic is the most directly connected optional reading for the Veilguard era.
