There is no single best military simulation game for learning modern combat tactics because “modern combat” can mean several levels of war. Arma 3 is the best starting point for infantry movement and basic procedures; Command: Modern Operations is the strongest choice for joint air, maritime, electronic-warfare and operational planning; and Flashpoint Campaigns or Combat Mission are better for deliberate ground-tactical decisions under uncertainty. DCS World specializes in aircraft and vehicle systems, while Six Days in Fallujah offers narrated historical urban-combat context. These games can exercise planning, reconnaissance, command friction and tactical problem-solving, but none replaces professional instruction, validated doctrine, live training or the physical and human realities of war.

What does “learning modern combat tactics” mean in a game?
Before choosing a title, identify the level of war you want to study. A first-person infantry game asks you to move, observe, communicate and use weapons from an individual perspective. A tactical wargame asks when and where to move platoons, vehicles and support assets. An operational simulation asks how air, naval, land, space-adjacent, cyber or electronic effects combine across a theater.

The most useful learning comes from the decision model rather than visual realism alone. Look for systems that make reconnaissance incomplete, delay orders, model fatigue or morale, constrain communications, and force you to plan before contact. Repeating a scenario with different routes, timings or force allocations can reveal why a decision succeeded or failed.
- Scale: individual soldier, vehicle, platoon, company, battalion, brigade or joint theater.
- Domain: infantry, armor, air, maritime, electronic warfare, logistics or a combination.
- Control: direct avatar control, real-time command, turn-based or WEGO planning, or operational tasking.
- Friction: fog of war, orders delay, fatigue, morale, reconnaissance quality and communications limits.
- Learning support: tutorials, manuals, scenario editors, campaigns and after-action review.
Which game is the best starting point for infantry tactics?
1. Arma 3 — best beginner-friendly infantry option
Arma 3 is the clearest entry point when you want to practice infantry movement, navigation, weapon handling and combined-arms situations without starting at the level of a theater commander. Its official Bootcamp content introduces “the basic principles of infantry combat” through objective-based training missions. That gives a new player a defined sequence instead of requiring an immediate commitment to a large community-made scenario.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The game’s sandbox structure lets you repeat a problem: approach an objective from different directions, change the amount of reconnaissance available, or compare a fast movement plan with a slower security-focused one. You can experience the difference between seeing a threat yourself and relying on a teammate or AI unit to report it. The same environment can support infantry, vehicles and air support, so it is possible to connect a small-unit decision to a wider combined-arms plan.
Arma 3 is still a game built around direct control. It does not provide the same deliberate staff-planning model as an operational wargame, and the quality of a scenario can vary greatly depending on its design and any community content it requires. Multiplayer groups may add communication and leadership demands, but a solo learner should begin with the official training material and structured missions before adding complex modifications.
- Choose it if: you want a visual, first-person way to learn basic infantry procedures and movement.
- Its strongest lesson: positioning, observation, navigation and coordination in a flexible sandbox.
- Main limitation: it does not by itself teach the full operational picture or guarantee that a user-created scenario reflects doctrine.
Which game is best for joint and operational combat planning?
2. Command: Modern Operations — best operational and all-domain simulation
Command: Modern Operations is designed for a different question: how do you employ joint forces across a theater when sensors, weapons, communications and geography interact? Its official manual calls it a “tactical-operational level wargame/simulation of joint all-domain operations, from post-WW2 to the near future.” The player manages forces while some tactical functions are handled by the game’s artificial intelligence.
This makes it suited to air-tasking, maritime patrols, missile defense, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, strike planning and the timing of multiple axes of operation. You are not primarily practicing how to clear a room or move as an individual rifleman. You are deciding what to detect, what to expose, which assets to hold in reserve and how to sequence an operation when the enemy’s disposition is uncertain.
The scale also creates its main barrier. The interface, data and scenario assumptions can be demanding for someone who has never worked with operational maps or order-of-battle information. Read the manual, start with a small scenario and change one variable at a time. For example, compare a plan that commits most of its aircraft immediately with one that preserves a reserve for emerging targets or defensive missions.
- Choose it if: you are interested in joint-force employment, sensors, weapons envelopes and theater-level decisions.
- Its strongest lesson: matching missions and timing to the capabilities and limitations of different domains.
- Main limitation: it is not a close-quarters infantry trainer and has a steep learning curve.
What are the best games for deliberate ground-tactical study?
3. Flashpoint Campaigns — best for command friction and uncertainty
Flashpoint Campaigns is the strongest choice when your priority is ground decision-making rather than direct character control. The U.S. Army describes its Red Storm Player’s Edition as teaching decision-making under ambiguity, equipment capabilities and vulnerabilities, and tactical best practices. Its mechanics include fog of war, orders delay, fatigue, morale and mission planning, so a sound plan can still be disrupted by imperfect information and delayed execution.

The WEGO-style approach encourages you to think in phases. You issue orders, allow both sides’ plans to execute, then study the changed situation before issuing the next set. That structure makes it easier to ask why a unit arrived late, why reconnaissance failed to reveal a threat, or why a force that looked stronger on paper lost momentum. Professional documentation describes a data-rich modern or near-future simulation with maneuver units, national characteristics, command parameters, orders of battle, air defense, engineers, reconnaissance, helicopters and transport operations.
The professional edition is also described by the U.S. Marine Corps as a tool for training, education and analysis at brigade level and below. That does not make the commercial game a substitute for military schooling, but it explains why its emphasis is on planning and analysis rather than cinematic action.
- Choose it if: you want to study how plans survive delays, fatigue, morale and incomplete reconnaissance.
- Its strongest lesson: the cost of issuing complex orders when communications and time are limited.
- Main limitation: its interface and abstracted command model are less approachable than a first-person game.
4. Combat Mission — best detailed platoon-to-battalion tactics
Combat Mission Professional Edition is described as a detailed 1:1 tactical simulator covering forces from platoon to battalion level. Its educational campaigns are based on real-world conflicts, giving learners a framework for studying terrain, weapon capabilities, movement, observation and the consequences of exposure.
Unlike a direct-control shooter, Combat Mission asks you to give units tasks and manage a developing tactical problem. You can examine how a platoon’s route interacts with fields of fire, how armored protection changes an engagement, and how support assets affect the timing of an assault. The value is in comparing plans and reviewing the chain of decisions that led to a result, not in treating a single outcome as a universal rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCombat Mission is a better fit than Arma 3 when you want to focus on formations and tactical geometry. It is a less suitable first choice if you need a guided introduction to infantry controls or want a large, immediately accessible multiplayer sandbox.
- Choose it if: you want platoon-, company- or battalion-level ground decisions with detailed equipment and terrain relationships.
- Its strongest lesson: how positioning, observation and weapon capabilities interact in a bounded tactical problem.
- Main limitation: the simulation demands more preparation and interpretation than an action-oriented game.
Which game is best for aircraft and vehicle systems?
5. DCS World — best specialized vehicle simulator
DCS World is the appropriate recommendation when “modern combat tactics” means learning how a specific aircraft or vehicle is operated and employed. Its official description says its goal is to offer “the most authentic and realistic simulation of military aircraft, tanks, ground vehicles and ships possible.” That focus makes it valuable for systems knowledge, procedures, navigation, sensors, weapons employment and platform-specific limitations.

The specialization is important. A detailed aircraft module can teach you to think about fuel, sensors, communications, threat rings and weapon release conditions, but that does not amount to a complete curriculum for modern land warfare. The same is true of a vehicle module: it may illuminate sighting, mobility and protection while leaving infantry coordination, logistics and theater-level planning outside the lesson.
Use DCS World as a component in a broader study plan. Pair a platform-focused scenario with a written tactical question: what information does the crew need, what risks does the mission expose, and what support or recovery plan is required? That keeps the simulator connected to decisions instead of reducing it to memorizing controls.

- Choose it if: you want deep practice with aircraft, tanks, ground vehicles or ships.
- Its strongest lesson: the relationship between platform systems, mission tasks and operational constraints.
- Main limitation: platform fidelity does not automatically teach joint land tactics or infantry command.
Which game provides the strongest historical urban-combat context?
6. Six Days in Fallujah — best narrated urban-combat context
Six Days in Fallujah is built around true stories from Marines, Soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Its official description presents missions narrated through the eyes of real people, making the human and historical setting central to the experience.
That approach can help a learner understand why urban combat is difficult: visibility is restricted, routes are constrained, civilians and combatants may be intermingled, and decisions have consequences beyond the immediate objective. The narrated structure also encourages attention to perspective and context rather than treating a map as an abstract puzzle.
It should not be selected as a generalized tactics trainer. Its value is narrower and more contextual than the planning depth of Flashpoint Campaigns, the operational scope of Command: Modern Operations or the systems focus of DCS World. Use it to ask historical questions about urban operations and the experiences of people involved, then use a more systematic wargame if you need repeatable force-planning exercises.
- Choose it if: you want a story-led view of a specific urban conflict and its human context.
- Its strongest lesson: how terrain, civilian presence and personal experience shape urban-combat decisions.
- Main limitation: it is not a universal modern-combat curriculum.
Is Point of Attack 2 worth considering for high-fidelity tactics?
7. Point of Attack 2 — best for granular weapons and command-and-control study
Point of Attack 2 is aimed at readers who value simulation depth over accessibility. Its official description covers platoon and vehicle scale through company and larger formations, with emphasis on weapons systems, command and control, fog of war and planning.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That combination makes it useful for examining how information and weapons capabilities shape a ground operation. You can study the difference between knowing that an enemy exists and knowing its exact position, or between possessing a weapon system and being able to employ it under terrain, timing and command constraints.
The trade-off is that the game offers less immediate accessibility than Arma 3 and less broad all-domain coverage than Command: Modern Operations. It is best approached as a deliberate study tool: read the documentation, choose a narrowly defined scenario and keep notes on assumptions, orders and observed outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between these military simulation games?
Match the game to the question you want to answer, not to a vague promise of “realism.” The following decision path keeps the choice practical:
- Want to inhabit an infantry role? Start with Arma 3 and its official Bootcamp missions.
- Want to command air, sea and land assets across a theater? Choose Command: Modern Operations.
- Want to study ground formations under delayed orders and fog of war? Choose Flashpoint Campaigns.
- Want detailed platoon-to-battalion engagements? Choose Combat Mission.
- Want to learn a platform’s systems and procedures? Choose DCS World.
- Want a narrated urban-conflict perspective? Choose Six Days in Fallujah.
- Want granular weapons and command modeling with a steeper interface? Consider Point of Attack 2.
Accessibility matters as much as scope. A game you can explain, set up and repeat will usually teach more than a larger simulation you open once and abandon. Solo play is useful for controlled experiments; multiplayer can add communication and leadership demands but may also introduce dependence on other players, community scenarios and house rules.
How can you turn a game into a useful learning exercise?
Use a repeatable study loop instead of treating a victory screen as proof that a tactic is correct.
- Define one question. Examples include whether a route protects a force from observation, how much reconnaissance is needed before movement, or when to preserve a reserve.
- Record the assumptions. Note the forces, terrain, weather or scenario conditions, available information and any artificial-intelligence behavior that affects the problem.
- Make a simple plan. Assign objectives, movement routes, support tasks, communications priorities and a decision point for changing the plan.
- Run the scenario without changing several variables at once. If you alter timing, route and force size simultaneously, you will not know which change mattered.
- Review the result. Identify where information was missing, where orders were delayed, and which unit or system became a limiting factor.
- Repeat with one controlled change. Compare a reserve, a different reconnaissance route, a slower advance or a revised support schedule.
- Write the transferable lesson carefully. State what the scenario demonstrated under its assumptions, not what would always happen in real combat.
What can these games teach, and what can they not teach?
The evidence supports narrower educational claims: simulations can exercise planning, equipment understanding, decision-making, command friction and tactical problem-solving in controlled scenarios. The U.S. Army’s discussion of off-the-shelf simulations includes tactics and effective decision-making among relevant uses, while professional descriptions of Flashpoint Campaigns and Command emphasize training, education, analysis and cross-domain wargaming.

A game cannot reproduce classified information, real human fear, physical fatigue, medical consequences, legal responsibility, political constraints or the uncertainty of an actual chain of command. Its models also reflect design choices, available data and scenario assumptions. Treat every result as evidence about the simulated system, then check important conclusions against authoritative doctrine and professional instruction.
How were these games selected?
The ranking uses six criteria: scale, domain coverage, decision model, friction and uncertainty, learning support, and accessibility. Preference goes to games whose official descriptions or professional evaluations clearly identify planning, tactics, equipment understanding, command friction or historical context as part of their purpose. No universal realism score is assigned, because realism depends on the level of war and the question a player is trying to study.

Can a military simulation game make me combat-ready?
No. Games omit physical conditioning, live-fire safety, medical care, classified procedures, legal duties and the human consequences of violence. They are best used to rehearse decisions and vocabulary, not to certify competence for military or emergency work.
Which of these games is easiest to start alone?
Arma 3 has the clearest official starting path because its Bootcamp introduces infantry actions, navigation and weapon handling through objectives. Command: Modern Operations and the ground wargames can also be played solo, but they require more reading and deliberate scenario setup.
Do any of these games cover near-future conflicts?
Command: Modern Operations covers scenarios from the post-World War II period to the near future. Flashpoint Campaigns’ professional documentation likewise describes modern or near-future combat, while the other titles focus more narrowly on their represented platforms, conflicts or tactical settings.
Is a first-person milsim more realistic than a map-based wargame?
Not in every sense. A first-person game can represent individual movement and weapon handling more directly, while a map-based simulation may model orders, reconnaissance, morale and force employment more deeply. The more useful question is which level of war you need to understand.
