There is no single best refillable ink printer for every buyer. The right choice depends on monthly pages, whether you need automatic two-sided printing or an automatic document feeder (ADF), your preferred connection, and whether the model is still sold in your market. For a home office, a current Epson EcoTank replacement for the discontinued ET-3850 is the most sensible feature-balanced starting point; Canon’s PIXMA MegaTank G3270 suits straightforward wireless print, scan and copy work; and higher-volume buyers should examine the Brother models available in their country. HP’s Smart Tank 7301 has useful specifications but is marked discontinued in the United States, so it is not a safe unqualified recommendation.
This guide separates manufacturer specifications and yield claims from independent review measurements, explains what “refillable” really means, and shows how to match a printer to your workflow before you buy.

Ink tank printers replace the small, disposable cartridges used by conventional inkjets with refillable reservoirs. You pour bottled cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink into model-specific tanks; the printhead then meters that ink onto the page. Because a bottle contains substantially more ink than a typical cartridge, tanks can sit for many pages before they need replenishing.
“Refillable” does not mean every bottle fits every printer. Epson EcoTank, Canon MegaTank, HP Smart Tank and Brother ink tank machines use different bottle families, nozzle designs and filling procedures. Buy only the bottle code listed for your exact model and region. A mismatched bottle can cause leaks, recognition problems or permanent print-quality damage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is an initially higher purchase commitment and a larger printer footprint in exchange for less frequent refilling. Tanks are most compelling for households, students and home offices that print regularly. If you print only a handful of pages every few months, a lower-cost cartridge machine may involve less money up front, although cartridges can be expensive per page.
How should you choose among refillable printers?
Start with your workflow rather than with a brand name. A printer that looks inexpensive can be frustrating if it lacks duplexing, an ADF or the connection your desk requires.
1. Estimate real monthly volume
Count pages you actually print, including draft pages, school work, invoices and occasional color documents. Manufacturer “yield” numbers are produced under specified test patterns or modes; they are not a promise of your personal page count. Photos, heavy graphics and frequent cleaning consume more ink than standard office pages.
2. Decide whether you need an ADF
A flatbed scanner handles one sheet at a time. An ADF feeds a stack for copying or scanning multipage documents. If you regularly digitize receipts, contracts or homework packets, an ADF can save more time than a small difference in print speed.
3. Check automatic duplexing
Automatic duplex printing turns a two-sided job without manual page flipping. It reduces paper use and is valuable for reports and schoolwork. Some entry models, including Epson’s ET-2800, lack auto duplexing, while office-oriented models include it.
4. Match connectivity and placement
Wi-Fi is convenient for phones and laptops. Ethernet is preferable when a printer is shared by several desk-bound computers or when wireless reliability is poor. Check whether the exact model supports the mobile operating systems and cloud services you use.
5. Compare paper handling and service
A 250-sheet tray means fewer reloads than a small rear feeder. Also check supported media, scanner type, display, fax, warranty terms and local service. Features and model names vary by country, so a specification from one region cannot be assumed for another.

Which five refillable ink printers deserve a place on a shortlist?
The following are evidence-backed candidates, not a claim that one machine wins every controlled test. Availability and successor models should be confirmed immediately before purchase.
| Model or family | Best fit | Key documented features | Yield or test claim | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epson EcoTank ET-3950 (replacement for ET-3850) | Home office needing an all-rounder | Automatic duplex, ADF, Ethernet and 250-sheet tray are listed for the ET-3850 platform | Epson lists 7,500 black and 6,000 color ISO pages for T502 replacement ink | ET-3850 is discontinued; verify the ET-3950’s current listing and identical features |
| Canon PIXMA MegaTank G3270 | Wireless print/scan/copy at home | Integrated tanks, hybrid ink, flatbed scanner and simplex scanning | Canon lists up to 6,000 black-and-white and 7,700 color pages in default mode; economy mode lists up to 7,600 and 8,100 | No automatic duplex or ADF is documented in the cited US brochure; confirm the current listing |
| HP Smart Tank 7301 | Feature-rich home office, only if available used or through remaining stock | Automatic duplex, 35-sheet ADF, 250-sheet input, Ethernet and wireless | HP rates up to 15 ppm black, 9 ppm color and recommends 400–800 pages per month | HP’s US product page marks it discontinued; identify and verify a successor before buying |
| Brother MFC-T780DW | Higher-volume work where the model is sold | Tom’s Guide selected it as its overall 2026 pick and conducted hands-on testing | Tom’s Guide measured about 0.3 cents per text page and under one cent per color page in its setup | Model name and availability differ by market; those costs are publisher measurements, not universal rates |
| Brother DCP-T730DW (regional example) | Duplex-capable home or small-office use in supported markets | Print, scan and copy; Wi-Fi; automatic duplex | Brother Philippines advertises up to 16 ipm black, 15.5 ipm color, 7,500 black and 5,000 color pages | The cited page is for the Philippines; it does not establish US inventory or an equivalent US model |
Is the Epson EcoTank ET-3950 the best home-office starting point?
It is the strongest starting point when you need a balanced home-office feature set, provided the ET-3950 is currently sold where you live. Epson identifies it as the replacement for the discontinued ET-3850, whose documented design combines automatic duplexing, an ADF, Ethernet and a 250-sheet paper tray.
Epson’s ET-3850 page lists T502 replacement yields of 7,500 black and 6,000 color ISO pages. Those are Epson’s stated results under an ISO test method, not a guarantee for mixed documents or photographs. Use the figures to understand the intended scale of the system, not to promise a particular household’s cost per page.

The ADF and duplexer matter more than headline speed for many home offices. You can scan a multipage packet without placing every sheet on the glass and produce two-sided reports without manual intervention. Ethernet provides a wired option for a shared office. Before ordering, open the current ET-3950 specification sheet and check that these features, the T502 bottle family and warranty apply to your regional variant.
When does the Canon PIXMA MegaTank G3270 make more sense?
Choose the G3270 when you want a relatively simple wireless printer, scanner and copier and do not require an ADF or automatic two-sided printing. Canon’s US brochure describes integrated tanks, a hybrid ink system, a flatbed scanner and simplex (one-sided) scanning. It rates print speed at up to 11 black and 6 color images per minute using ESAT.
Canon’s US shop listing gives up to 6,000 black-and-white and 7,700 color pages per complete bottle set in default mode. The same listing gives economy-mode figures of up to 7,600 black-and-white and 8,100 color pages. Because those modes use different coverage assumptions, do not compare one number directly with another brand’s ISO figure.
Canon documents a one-year limited warranty for the G3270. The brochure and shop listing show different black-bottle volume figures (170 ml versus 135 ml); that discrepancy is why bottle volume should be checked on the exact revision you intend to purchase rather than repeated as a universal specification. Canon identifies the GI-21 supply family for this model.

Should you buy the HP Smart Tank 7301?
Only after confirming remaining stock, condition and support. The 7301’s feature list is attractive: HP specifies automatic duplex printing, a 35-sheet ADF, a 250-sheet input tray, Ethernet and wireless networking. It rates the machine at up to 15 pages per minute in black and 9 in color and recommends a monthly volume of 400–800 pages.
HP also publishes approximate yields for HP 32XL black and HP 31 color bottles. As with every manufacturer yield, the result depends on the test method and page coverage; it is not a guaranteed household cost.
The decisive problem is status: HP’s US product page marks Smart Tank 7301 discontinued. A discontinued model may still be suitable if a reputable seller has new stock and replacement bottles and service are available, but it should not be presented as a straightforward current buy. Check HP’s current Smart Tank lineup for a verified successor and compare its ADF, duplex, tray and network specifications rather than assuming they are unchanged.
What do Brother’s ink tank models offer?
Brother provides useful candidates, but the cited evidence is regional. Brother’s India category lists DCP-T730DW, DCP-T830DW and MFC-T930DW with different function and feature combinations. Brother Philippines describes the DCP-T730DW as a print/scan/copy model with Wi-Fi and automatic duplexing, rated up to 16 images per minute in black and 15.5 in color.

Those numbers belong to the regional DCP-T730DW and should not be transferred to a similarly named printer sold elsewhere.
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 ranking names the Brother MFC-T780DW its overall pick after hands-on testing. It reported approximately 0.3 cents per text page and under one cent per color page in its test setup. That is an independent publisher measurement, not a Brother specification or a universal running-cost promise. Confirm that the MFC-T780DW is actually sold in your country, and check plug, warranty, language and bottle availability before treating it as your top choice.
What about other Epson models such as ET-2800, ET-2850 and ET-4850?
They illustrate why model-by-model checking is essential. Epson’s US comparison pages show the ET-2800 without automatic duplexing, while other compared models add duplex, Ethernet or an ADF. The ET-4850 is shown with fax and a touchscreen, making it more office-oriented than an entry model.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do advertised ink yields compare fairly?
They do not form one universal league table because the test bases differ. Epson’s ET-3850 numbers are ISO pages for T502 replacement ink. Canon’s G3270 figures are default- and economy-mode estimates for a full bottle set. HP supplies approximate bottle yields, while Brother’s regional pages advertise maximum figures for their listed models.
Use the following checks before calculating a cost:
- Identify whether the figure is ISO, a default mode, an economy mode or a maximum advertisement.
- Confirm whether black and color are measured separately or as a complete set.
- Obtain current local bottle prices, including taxes and shipping.
- Decide whether your pages are mostly text, mixed color or photos.
- Account for maintenance cycles and ink used during cleaning, which published yields may not represent in your routine.
A simple estimate is ink cost per page = bottle-set cost ÷ pages produced, but the result is meaningful only when the price, yield method and page mix are stated together. Do not convert a manufacturer’s yield into a guaranteed savings percentage.
Do ADF and automatic duplex printing justify a higher price?
For document-heavy work, usually yes. An ADF changes scanning and copying from a one-sheet-at-a-time task into a batch workflow; the HP 7301, for example, lists a 35-sheet ADF. Automatic duplexing saves manual sorting and paper when producing two-sided reports. If you mostly print occasional single-page forms and photos, those mechanisms may add cost and complexity without improving your experience.
Tray capacity is another practical dividing line. The Epson ET-3850 platform and HP 7301 list 250-sheet input trays, reducing reloads compared with compact entry designs. Flatbed-only machines such as the documented G3270 are adequate for books, photos and single originals but slower for multipage packets.
What should you check before purchasing a refillable printer?
- Confirm the exact regional model. Search the manufacturer’s site for the model suffix used in your country; names and features can change between the United States, India, the Philippines and other markets.
- Check live status and stock. A discontinued label, such as ET-3850 or HP 7301 in the cited US pages, requires a successor or remaining-stock decision rather than an automatic recommendation.
- Write down required features. Mark ADF, auto duplex, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, fax, touchscreen, tray size and scanner type before comparing prices.
- Verify bottle codes. Confirm T502 for the documented Epson platform, GI-21 for Canon G3270 or the exact HP/Brother bottle family shown for your variant. Never assume a similarly named bottle fits.
- Read the warranty and service terms. Confirm duration, region, authorized repair options and whether printheads are covered.
- Estimate your page mix. Use text, mixed color and photo scenarios instead of relying on one headline yield.
- Plan the network setup. Decide whether Wi-Fi is sufficient or Ethernet is needed, and check mobile-app support for your devices.
How do you refill and maintain an ink tank printer safely?
Refilling is simple when you follow the model’s manual, but the ink is not interchangeable. Keep bottles upright, work on a protected surface and avoid touching the printhead or tank vents.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Check the tank window or level indicator and refill only the color that is low.
- Use the bottle code specified for the exact printer; do not mix dye and pigment formulas unless the manufacturer says they are compatible.
- Open the printer’s fill port and bottle cap as instructed. Many keyed bottles are designed to stop the wrong color, but do not force a connection.
- Fill to the marked line, close the port firmly and wipe any spill immediately with a lint-free cloth.
- Run the printer’s nozzle check. If gaps appear, use the standard cleaning cycle and allow recovery time before repeating it; excessive cleaning consumes ink.
- Store capped bottles away from heat and direct light, and keep them out of children’s reach.
Leaving an inkjet unused for long periods can allow nozzles to dry. A short color and black test page at reasonable intervals is safer than waiting until a major job reveals a clog.
Which printer is best for each type of buyer?
- Home office with scanning and two-sided reports: Start with the current Epson ET-3950 listing (the ET-3850 replacement) and verify ADF, duplex, Ethernet and tray specifications.
- Simple wireless household printing: Canon G3270 is a sensible fit if flatbed, one-sided scanning and manual duplexing meet your needs.
- Document-heavy workflow in a supported market: Consider Brother MFC-T780DW or DCP-T730DW only after confirming local availability, warranty and bottle supply.
- Buyer considering HP 7301: Treat it as discontinued in the United States and investigate a current Smart Tank successor instead.
- Occasional printer user: Compare the higher purchase price and storage requirements of a tank system with a cartridge printer; the tank’s high advertised yield may not offset very low usage.
What do current expert roundups add to the picture?
TechRadar’s 2026 category guide discusses Epson ET-4950, Canon PIXMA G3270 and G3290, Brother MFC-T780DW and HP Smart Tank models, emphasizing trade-offs in equipment and print quality. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup names Brother MFC-T780DW, Canon G3290 and HP Smart Tank 7602 among its picks and reports that it performed testing.

Those articles are useful context, but their recommendations reflect their own testing, market and dates. They are not a single cross-brand controlled test by one laboratory, and a model name in a roundup may differ from the version sold in your country. Use the measured claims only with their stated test setup and verify live specifications before purchase.
What is the practical verdict?
Choose by workflow, not by the biggest yield number. A current Epson ET-3950 is the most balanced documented option for a home office if its replacement status and local specifications check out. Canon’s G3270 is better suited to uncomplicated wireless print, scan and copy. Brother can be compelling for higher-volume users where its regional models and supplies are available, while HP’s 7301 should be treated as a discontinued reference rather than a default recommendation. In every case, verify market, bottle family, warranty and live stock before paying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will refillable ink dry out if I do not print every week?
It can. Inkjet nozzles may clog during long idle periods, so occasional black-and-color test pages and the printer’s normal maintenance routine are safer than leaving the machine unused for months. Avoid repeated deep-clean cycles because they consume ink.
Can I use third-party bottled ink in an EcoTank, MegaTank or Smart Tank printer?
Only if the printer maker explicitly supports that formulation and the bottle is made for the exact model. An incorrect dye or pigment formula can produce poor color, leaks or printhead damage, and may affect warranty service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre ink tank printers economical for photo printing?
They can reduce the ink cost of frequent color output, but advertised office-page yields do not predict photo coverage. Photo buyers should check the printer’s supported paper sizes, color system and review-specific photo assessments rather than relying on black-and-color page counts.
How much desk space does a tank printer need?
Measure the printer with trays, scanner lid and rear or front access fully open, not just its closed dimensions. Leave clearance for bottle filling and ventilation, and confirm that the paper path suits your shelf or cabinet.
