If you want a horror game with an unusually strong critical consensus, start with Resident Evil 4 (2005), which leads this group. The 2023 remake is the more approachable modern entry for many players, while Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and System Shock 2 reward players willing to deal with older hardware or platform-specific availability.
These are not ten interchangeable scares. Some are tightly paced action-survival games, some depend on puzzles and scarce resources, and others use psychological unease or narrative trauma instead of constant combat. The ranking below uses Metacritic’s launch-period scores and then weighs horror identity, atmosphere, design, and how practical each game is to access now.

How were these 90-plus horror games ranked?
Metacritic’s all-time survival-game ranking uses launch-period Metascores. For a game released on several systems, Metacritic uses the platform with the largest number of professional reviews. That makes the scores useful for comparing critical reception, but not a guarantee that every edition or player experience will be identical.
The order here keeps those scores as the foundation and adds four editorial tests: how clearly each game fits horror, how distinctive its atmosphere is, how well its exploration and combat systems work together, and how realistic it is for a new player to find and play today. “Horror” is used broadly enough to include survival horror, action-survival horror, psychological horror and horror-tinged immersive simulation.

Availability notes are deliberately cautious. The older entries may involve legacy hardware, a remaster or a platform-specific edition, and storefront listings change by region. Check the exact edition before buying; a score attached to one release should not automatically be assumed to describe another.

Why is Resident Evil 4 (2005) ranked first?
Resident Evil 4 (2005) is the strongest all-rounder in this list because it makes action, survival pressure and horror atmosphere support one another instead of competing. Its third-person perspective gives you a clear sense of space for combat, yet the rural-European setting and mission structure keep the journey tense rather than turning it into a straightforward shooter.

The game occupies a useful middle ground. Encounters are more active than in the fixed-camera classics, but movement through hostile spaces still feels like an endurance test. You are constantly balancing the immediate need to fight with the longer-term need to explore, conserve resources and decide how much risk to accept. That rhythm is why it works for readers who want horror without giving up responsive action.
Who should play it first?
Choose this version if you want the original design that established the modern action-survival template. It is also the best historical starting point for understanding why the 2023 remake exists. New players who want contemporary presentation and controls should compare it with the remake below rather than assuming the older release will feel modern.
Is Resident Evil Code: Veronica still worth playing?
Yes, if your priority is classic survival horror with a strong character-driven objective. The story follows Claire Redfield as she searches for Chris, giving the game a clear emotional through-line while its exploration and resource decisions preserve the deliberate pace associated with the series’ earlier format.
What kind of fear does it deliver?
This is pressure built from uncertainty: unfamiliar spaces, puzzles that make you retrace routes, and limited supplies that make every detour consequential. It is less immediately accessible than a modern action-horror game because its age is part of the experience. The tension comes from planning and persistence rather than constant spectacle.

What should first-time players know about access?
Because it is an older entry, the exact route to play it can depend on your hardware and the edition sold in your region. Confirm that you are buying Code: Veronica itself, not a similarly named compilation or a different series entry, and check controller and display compatibility before committing.

Does The Last of Us Part II count as a horror game?
It does, but it is best described as a post-pandemic survival-horror/action adventure rather than pure survival horror. The game places Ellie at the center of a story about the consequences of revenge, and its horror comes from the combination of dangerous encounters, vulnerability and sustained emotional pressure.
How is it different from the Resident Evil entries?
Its narrative focus is much heavier. Action and survival mechanics serve the characters and their changing circumstances, so the experience alternates between tense movement, violent confrontation and quieter stretches of reflection. If you want elaborate puzzle-box environments or an arcade-like combat loop, this is not the closest match; if you want horror that is inseparable from character and theme, it is one of the list’s most distinctive choices.
Which edition should you investigate?
The scored entry is the original The Last of Us Part II. Metacritic also lists The Last of Us Part II Remastered at 90, making it an eligible current-platform alternative when you specifically want that edition. Treat those as separate releases when checking features, requirements and availability.

Is the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake the best game to start with?
For many players, yes. It rebuilds the 2005 game rather than merely increasing its resolution, modernizing combat, presentation and story while preserving the action-survival identity that made the original notable.
Why is it more approachable?
The remake is designed around contemporary expectations for control and presentation, so it asks less patience from someone unfamiliar with older interfaces. It still expects you to manage danger and make choices under pressure, but its modern construction makes the learning curve easier to read.
Who may prefer the 2005 release?
Players interested in design history, a faster-feeling version of the same core idea, or the contrast between original and remake should play the earlier game first. The two editions are not redundant: one shows the breakthrough structure, while the other demonstrates how that structure can be reinterpreted for a newer audience.
What makes Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem unusual?
Eternal Darkness is the list’s clearest psychological and cosmic-horror experiment. Its story moves among multiple characters, and the sanity system turns the player’s perception into part of the danger instead of treating fear as something that exists only in the setting.

How does the sanity system change play?
It links the condition of the character to the way the game communicates with you. That creates a different kind of uncertainty from a pursuing enemy: you are not always sure whether a disturbing event belongs to the world, the character’s mind or the game’s deliberate manipulation. The result is more experimental than the straightforward combat pressure of Resident Evil 4.
Is it easy to access today?
Access is one of its main drawbacks. Platform-specific availability can be difficult, so verify the exact system and edition before planning a playthrough. If you can access it legally, prioritize it when you want an idea-led horror experience rather than the most immediately available modern release.
Why is System Shock 2 on a horror list?
System Shock 2 blends science-fiction dread with immersive-simulation design. Its horror is built through exploration, survival mechanics and the freedom to solve problems in more than one way, making it a strong choice for players who prefer systems and atmosphere to a purely scripted scare sequence.
What should you expect from the gameplay?
You investigate spaces, manage survival concerns and use the game’s interconnected tools to deal with threats. That structure gives you more agency than a linear action game, but it also means the experience can be less immediately readable. You are rewarded for paying attention to the environment and understanding how your choices affect later situations.
Who is the ideal player?
Pick it if you enjoy science-fiction settings, methodical exploration and games that let you improvise. It is a weaker first choice for someone who wants a short, highly guided horror campaign. As with the other older titles here, check compatibility and edition details before assuming it will run on your preferred platform.
Should you play the Resident Evil remake or the 1996 original?
The remake is the better entry point for most newcomers, while the 1996 original is essential if you want to experience the template in its earliest influential form. Both center on mansion exploration, puzzles, inventory decisions and resource survival, but their presentation and usability belong to different eras.
What does the remake improve?
The rebuilt version preserves the fixed-camera tension and deliberate navigation while making the mansion easier to approach for a modern audience. It is the practical choice when you want the classic structure without committing immediately to the oldest interface conventions.

Why still play the original?
The 1996 release shows how the mansion, puzzle, inventory and resource-survival formula was established. Its historical value is part of its appeal, and its rougher edges make the design decisions easier to see. Expect a more demanding relationship with controls, presentation and platform compatibility.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis turns pursuit into the organizing principle of its survival horror. The Nemesis threat keeps the player moving, while route choices make navigation feel like a decision under pressure rather than a fixed tour through familiar spaces.
What is different about its pacing?
Instead of relying only on rooms that become dangerous when you enter them, the game gives danger a persistent identity. You must think about where to go and how much confrontation is worth taking, which creates a more urgent rhythm than the slower puzzle emphasis of the mansion-focused entries.
Who will enjoy it most?
Choose it when you want classic survival-horror systems with a stronger chase element. Players who dislike being interrupted or pressured into route changes may prefer the more controlled pacing of the remake or the original mansion game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you know about the 2002-listed Resident Evil 2?
The 2002 listing presents an outbreak story built around police-station and city environments, with Leon and Claire campaigns providing different character perspectives. It is a useful bridge between the confined mansion formula and a broader urban survival-horror setting.
How do the two campaigns affect the experience?
Playing as Leon or Claire changes the way you read the outbreak and gives the game more than one route through its central crisis. The dual-campaign structure makes exploration and story context feel connected: the same larger disaster is experienced through distinct personal objectives.
Why verify the edition name?
The title’s year matters because several games in the series share similar names. The score listed here belongs to the 2002 entry, so check the product description, release year and platform before purchase. Confusing it with another Resident Evil 2 release can lead to a very different game from the one represented in this ranking.

How should you choose among these games?
Use the type of fear you want, not the score alone. A 90-plus Metascore signals unusually strong critical agreement, but it does not tell you whether a game emphasizes combat, puzzles, psychological manipulation or narrative drama.
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The strongest blend of action and horror | Resident Evil 4 (2005) or its 2023 remake | Both center third-person action-survival design; the remake is the easier modern entry. |
| Traditional puzzles and resource pressure | Resident Evil (Remake) | It keeps fixed-camera tension while presenting the mansion formula in rebuilt form. |
| A historical starting point | Resident Evil (1996) | It established the mansion, puzzle, inventory and resource-survival template. |
| A relentless pursuer | Resident Evil 3: Nemesis | Route choices and the Nemesis threat make movement itself stressful. |
| Character-led, emotionally heavy horror | The Last of Us Part II | Its survival-horror elements are inseparable from Ellie’s revenge narrative. |
| Psychological and cosmic unease | Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem | The multiple-character structure and sanity system make perception part of the horror. |
| Science-fiction and systemic exploration | System Shock 2 | It combines survival mechanics with immersive-simulation problem-solving. |
| Classic Claire-focused storytelling | Resident Evil Code: Veronica | Claire’s search for Chris gives its exploration a clear personal goal. |
| Two campaign perspectives in an outbreak | Resident Evil 2 (2002 listing) | Leon and Claire provide different routes through police-station and city horror. |
What should you check before buying an older horror game?
Older entries can be excellent and still be inconvenient to run. Verify the exact release represented by the score, the supported platform in your region, whether a controller is required or recommended, and whether the product is an original, remake, remaster or compilation.
- Match the title and year: similar names in a long-running series can represent entirely different editions.
- Confirm platform access: a game may be tied to legacy hardware or a specific reissue rather than broadly available.
- Check edition-specific reviews: launch-period scores do not automatically describe later ports or remasters.
- Set expectations for controls: fixed-camera navigation and older interfaces can feel deliberately slower than modern action games.
- Choose your horror tolerance: pursuit pressure, psychological effects and narrative violence create different kinds of discomfort.
If you want the least complicated entry, choose the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake. If you want to understand the genre’s design lineage, begin with the 2005 original and then move backward to the mansion games. Players seeking the widest mechanical and thematic range should use the list as a path through several subgenres rather than treating it as a single style of horror.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which horror game should I play first if I do not usually play horror?
Start with the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake if you want modern controls and a clear action-survival structure. Its pacing is more immediately legible than the older fixed-camera entries, while still delivering sustained tension.
Are games with a 90-plus Metacritic score guaranteed to be scary?
No. Metacritic measures critics’ overall reception, not an objective fear rating. A game can score highly because of its design, writing or innovation while offering psychological unease, science-fiction dread or action tension instead of frequent jump scares.
Do I need to play the original before a horror remake?
Usually not. A remake is designed to stand on its own, but playing the original afterward can show which atmosphere, pacing and systems were preserved or changed. Reverse the order when you are especially interested in game-history context.
Why do Metacritic scores differ between editions of the same game?
Scores are tied to a specific release and platform’s professional reviews. Ports, remasters and remakes can have different technical performance, features and review coverage, so always match the edition name to the score.
