Telecom operators use AI to interpret network measurements, identify likely faults, support traffic-management decisions, and help customer-care teams diagnose service problems. It is not one system that controls every call or packet: different tools work on different parts of a network, and their authority may range from offering advice to taking an approved action automatically. A vendor’s description of a capability does not establish that every carrier has deployed it.

What does AI do in a telecom network?

AI helps telecom operators make sense of large, changing streams of information: performance measurements, equipment signals, alarms, and—in customer-support workflows—subscriber and device context. A model or analytics system can flag an unusual pattern, estimate where a problem may lie, or recommend an action. Operational rules and people then determine whether and how that action is carried out.

That distinction matters. AI-assisted decision-making means a system analyzes evidence and suggests a next step. Policy-driven automation means software carries out a predefined action when specified conditions are met. Closed-loop or autonomous action means a system observes a result and can make further changes within its permitted controls. Those are different levels of authority—not synonyms for “AI.” A carrier might use AI to identify a likely fault while a technician verifies it, or permit automation to make a constrained network adjustment without an operator approving each instance.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) describes distinct network and customer uses, including routing analysis, failure prediction, and customer assistants. These do not all require generative AI: machine learning, conventional analytics, and rules can each play a role in different tasks. ITU’s 2025 report on AI for telecommunications also emphasizes the need to evaluate data quality, accuracy, interoperability, robustness, usability, and privacy.

How does AI route telecom traffic?

In network traffic management, AI can help operators recognize congestion or a deteriorating link, assess which services may be affected, and select or recommend a route that meets operational constraints. It generally works alongside the network’s existing control systems and routing protocols rather than replacing them wholesale.

A simplified workflow looks like this:

  1. Collect measurements. The operator gathers telemetry and performance indicators from relevant links and equipment. Depending on the network domain, those measurements can show changing quality, utilization, or signs of impairment.
  2. Spot a problem or change. Analytics or a model identifies a pattern that may indicate congestion, degradation, or failure. An alert is a lead for investigation; it is not automatically proof of the cause.
  3. Evaluate the impact and options. The system considers affected services and possible paths against constraints such as service quality. A suitable alternative depends on what the network can carry and the policies governing that service.
  4. Recommend or apply a permitted action. The system may present a recommendation for an operator or trigger a change that is already allowed by network policy. Which happens depends on the operator’s deployment and controls.
  5. Monitor the result. Continued measurements help determine whether the change improved the situation or whether further investigation is needed.

For optical networks, Nokia describes a system that uses network key performance indicators to detect issues and assess the impact of an optical-link degradation or failure, with rerouting as a possible response. That is a vendor-described capability; it should not be read as evidence that all carriers use it, or that all reroutes happen without human approval.

In a separate account dated July 24, 2026, Nokia describes machine-learning-informed maintenance triggers and agents that can recommend rerouting before a service-level agreement (SLA) is affected. Nokia solution-marketing author Pino Dicorato writes, “AI agents can use this process to recommend actions to proactively reroute traffic before SLAs are affected.” The wording describes a recommendation, not universal autonomous operation. Read Nokia’s explanation of AI-assisted optical-network operations.

Do not confuse routing data traffic with routing a customer’s call to a support agent. Nor does a telecom network’s carrying traffic generated by AI applications mean that AI is managing that network. These refer to separate systems and jobs.

Can AI predict a network outage?

AI can flag measurements associated with a developing fault and help prioritize checks before a fault becomes a service outage. It does not guarantee that an outage will be predicted, nor does a prediction establish that a particular component has failed. A useful maintenance workflow turns the alert into verification and, if needed, a targeted repair.

  • Fiber measurements: A 2021 Nokia fixed-network white paper describes using optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and received-signal-strength measurements to help locate fiber bends or connector problems.
  • Optical transceiver behavior: The same paper describes detecting transceivers that are degrading slowly, potentially before transmission errors appear.
  • Equipment condition: Nokia’s broadband explanation gives optical signal power, board temperature, and CPU load as examples of measurements where anomalies may matter.
  • Related alarms: Correlating multiple alarms can help narrow down where a fault is likely to be, rather than treating each alert as an unrelated incident.
  • Backhaul conditions: Granular microwave-backhaul data can help distinguish possible interference or obstructions and improve decisions about whether a field visit is needed.

The first four examples are discussed in Nokia’s fixed-network white paper and broadband AI material. The backhaul case is described in Ericsson’s 2025 account of work with O2 Telefónica Germany. These examples cover different network domains and do not imply that one model or signal set works everywhere.

The follow-up remains operational work: confirm the likely fault, judge its severity and service impact, and choose a suitable repair. A model may help locate a fiber issue or indicate that a backhaul link needs attention; it does not physically repair a cable, connector, or radio link. Likewise, a technician visit is not automatically the right response to every anomaly. Good prioritization helps teams distinguish a signal worth investigating from noise or a condition that can safely be monitored.

How does my provider use AI to fix a broadband problem?

In a fixed-broadband support workflow, AI can help connect a customer complaint to evidence from the access network, home Wi-Fi, router, or connected device. The goal is to narrow the likely fault domain and suggest useful next actions—not to assume every slow connection has the same cause.

Nokia says its Fixed Network Insights combines information from access networks, Wi-Fi, routers, devices, and operations systems to identify fixed-broadband problems and recommend next steps. In its PTCL case, the tools were integrated with a service-management platform, linking network diagnosis to customer care. Nokia’s broadband materials describe the product approach, while the ITU report identifies both customer chatbots and agent-assistance tools among telecom AI use cases.

That combination can be useful because a subscriber’s symptom does not reveal its cause. A weak signal or problem inside a home, a faulty access link between the home and provider, and a routing issue farther into the network are different fault domains. Each can require a different remedy. A diagnostic tool that correlates customer context with network evidence may help an agent avoid prescribing a home-device fix for a provider-side issue, or the reverse. But the recommendation still needs to match the evidence and the operator’s support process.

Conversational assistants are only one part of this picture. A chatbot may handle routine questions or collect details; an agent-assistance tool can help a human representative interpret diagnostics and decide what to do next. The customer-facing conversation and the underlying network diagnosis can be connected, but they are not the same function.

What do reported telecom AI results actually show?

Published figures offer examples of how particular operators or survey respondents describe AI use; they are not guarantees of what another carrier will achieve. The population, measurement, and operating context matter as much as the percentage.

Reported result Source and context How to interpret it
98% reduction in “Red Sites” Ericsson’s 2025 account of targeted analysis in O2 Telefónica Germany’s network. A reported outcome for one operator and its specific work, not a forecast for other networks.
69% of alarms automatically correlated and resolved; 29% lower mean time to repair Airtel figures as reported in a TM Forum case page; the publication year is not established on that page. A bounded case example. The figures should not be described as a controlled trial or assigned an unverified year.
57% of surveyed respondents investing in generative AI for customer service and support; 37% investing in network predictive maintenance NVIDIA’s 2024 survey of more than 400 telecom professionals, including vendors; fielded October–December 2023. These are survey responses about investment, not the share of all carriers running production systems.
57% of surveyed telcos reported scaling AI use cases across multiple domains McKinsey’s 2026 survey account. This is a separately defined measure. Do not combine its denominator with NVIDIA’s survey figures.

Sources: Ericsson, TM Forum’s Airtel case, NVIDIA’s telecom survey, and McKinsey’s 2026 analysis. The survey results answer different questions from the operator case studies, so they should not be treated as comparable deployment rates.

What can go wrong when telecom operators use AI?

AI’s recommendations are only as useful as the evidence and operational process behind them. The ITU calls for assessment of accuracy and data quality, interoperability with legacy systems, robustness and model drift, customer-service usability, and privacy safeguards. McKinsey’s 2026 account also identifies data limitations, operating models, and adoption as scaling challenges.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.
  • Poor or incomplete data: Missing, inconsistent, or noisy measurements can make a fault look different from what it is. Operators need to assess data quality and verify that important parts of the network are represented.
  • Changing conditions: A model that worked under one set of network conditions may become less reliable as equipment, traffic, or operating patterns change. Robustness and drift need ongoing attention.
  • Legacy-system integration: Recommendations are less useful if they cannot be reconciled with existing management tools and operational procedures. Interoperability is a practical prerequisite, not a minor technical detail.
  • Excessive automation: A mistaken diagnosis can have a larger impact if the system can immediately change a live network. Clear policy limits, monitoring, escalation paths, and human oversight help constrain that risk.
  • Privacy and customer experience: Support tools may work with subscriber and device context. Operators need safeguards for that information and must make sure automation produces understandable, useful support rather than an obstacle to resolution.

For operators evaluating a claim about a system, five questions expose the key differences: Which network domain does it cover—optical, radio or backhaul, or fixed access? What data does it use—telemetry, alarms, customer context, or a combination? Who has decision authority—the tool, a policy-controlled workflow, or an operator? What outcome is being measured—service quality, repair time, or customer resolution? And what is the evidence—a vendor capability description, a pilot, or an operator-reported deployment result? Answers to these questions are more informative than the label “AI-powered.”

Does AI replace telecom support agents or network engineers?

No general claim that AI replaces these roles follows from the examples above. The described systems analyze information, surface likely causes, recommend actions, and may automate bounded tasks. People remain important for validating uncertain diagnoses, handling exceptions, approving consequential changes, and carrying out repairs.

That does not mean every alert or support step must always be handled manually. Operators can permit automation where a task is sufficiently well defined and bounded, while reserving human review for uncertain, high-impact, or customer-sensitive situations. The appropriate division depends on the network, the quality of the evidence, the action’s potential impact, and the operator’s controls. A tool that correlates alarms or supports an agent can change how work is prioritized without making the person responsible for the service disappear.

How should you judge a claim that a telecom network uses AI?

Look beyond a provider’s broad AI label and ask what function is actually deployed and what evidence supports the claim. Anomaly detection, path recommendations, alarm correlation, and customer assistance are separate capabilities; a description of one does not establish the others.

Useful evidence identifies the relevant network domain, the inputs used, the level of automation, and the outcome being reported. It should also say whether the statement describes a vendor’s product capability, a trial or pilot, or an operator’s measured result. For performance figures, check the source and its definition: a reported reduction in one operator’s “Red Sites,” for example, is not the same measure as a survey respondent’s investment in predictive maintenance.

Finally, check the date. Telecom systems and vendor offerings change, and an older white paper or case study can explain a mechanism without proving a current carrier deployment. The safest conclusion is specific: AI can support routing, maintenance, and customer-care work, but its actual role and authority depend on the network and how its operator has deployed and governed the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does OTDR stand for in telecom maintenance?

OTDR means optical time-domain reflectometry, a way to assess fiber by analyzing how an optical signal behaves along it. Nokia’s 2021 fixed-network paper describes OTDR measurements as one input that can help locate fiber bends or connector problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are telecom AI survey percentages the same as the percentage of networks using AI?

No. For example, NVIDIA’s 57% and 37% figures refer to respondents investing in particular areas, in a survey fielded in late 2023—not verified production deployments across all carriers. Survey scope and question wording matter when interpreting any adoption percentage.

Does AI need generative AI to detect a network fault?

No. Fault detection and alarm correlation can use traditional machine learning, analytics, or rules. Generative AI is one approach for some tasks, such as conversational support, but it is not a requirement for every network operation.

Can an AI system change a live telecom network without approval?

That depends on the operator’s design and policy controls. Some systems provide advice, while others may be allowed to carry out predefined actions; a product capability description alone cannot establish what a particular carrier permits.
