Verdict: The Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (model A064) is one of the most flexible full-frame ultra-wide zooms for Sony E and Nikon Z travel kits. Its constant f/2.8 aperture, genuinely useful 16mm starting point, 30mm short-telephoto reach, 450 g weight and close-focus capability make it easier to keep on the camera than a more specialized ultra-wide. Digital Camera World’s 2026 review found it sharp across the frame, quick and accurate to autofocus, weather sealed and strong value. The compromises are equally clear: there is no optical stabilization, only Sony E and Nikon Z mounts are offered, and current prices and stock vary by country.

What is the Tamron 16-30mm G2?

The Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is a full-frame, constant-aperture ultra-wide zoom introduced in 2025. Its model number is A064, and it is available for Sony E and Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. Tamron positions it as the wide-angle member of its fast G2 zoom family, combining an expanded focal-length range with a compact design, updated autofocus and Lens Utility customization.

The most important change is the range itself. Earlier 17-28mm designs started at 17mm and stopped at 28mm; this lens reaches 16mm at the wide end and 30mm at the long end. That one-millimeter expansion in both directions sounds modest, but it changes how often you can leave the lens mounted while walking through a city, photographing a hotel room, or switching between a landscape and a nearby detail.

“Constant f/2.8” means the maximum aperture remains f/2.8 throughout the zoom. Exposure does not change as you move from 16mm to 30mm, which is useful for interiors, evening scenes and video clips that would otherwise need an exposure adjustment during a zoom.

How does the 16-30mm range change travel photography?

The 16mm setting gives noticeably more room for architecture, landscapes and cramped interiors than a 17mm or 18mm starting point. The 30mm setting is long enough for environmental portraits, street details and general travel scenes, so you are less likely to change lenses when a subject moves closer.

At 16mm: prioritize space and foreground

Use 16mm when the scene is larger than your position allows: a narrow street, a cathedral interior, a mountain viewpoint or a group standing close to the camera. Ultra-wide perspective exaggerates the relationship between near and far objects, so placing a foreground element close to the lens can give a travel image depth instead of a flat sweep of background.

From 20mm to 24mm: the adaptable middle

The middle of the zoom is useful when 16mm looks too expansive or causes distracting edge stretching. It still covers broad landscapes and rooms while giving people and buildings a more natural proportion than the widest setting.

At 30mm: a useful walk-around end

Thirty millimeters is not a replacement for a standard zoom, but it is substantially more versatile than stopping at 24mm or 28mm. It can isolate a sign, doorway, food detail or travel companion without immediately switching lenses. That extra reach is one reason the G2 is better suited to a one-lens day than the former 17-28mm design.

How sharp is the Tamron 16-30mm G2?

Digital Camera World’s 2026 review assessed the lens as sharp from edge to edge across its range. That is an independent publication’s review finding, not a standardized laboratory score, and the available evidence does not establish a controlled test chart result or a consistent owner-testing average. In practical terms, the review indicates that corners remain useful for architecture and landscape frames rather than requiring you to reserve the lens only for center-weighted subjects.

The optical design uses 16 elements in 12 groups. The review also reports a nine-blade diaphragm. Those specifications describe the construction, but they do not by themselves guarantee a particular level of corner detail, flare resistance or background rendering; the review’s field assessment is the relevant performance evidence here.

Autofocus performance

The same review found autofocus fast and accurate. Tamron says the G2 receives improved autofocus performance and an updated lens design, and Lens Utility support allows customization compatible with the manufacturer’s software ecosystem. Because no controlled tracking or video test results are provided, treat the AF verdict as a strong review assessment rather than a quantified benchmark.

Can the G2 focus close enough for travel details?

Yes. Minimum focus is 0.19 m at 16mm and 0.30 m at 30mm. At the wide end, moving close to a flower, market object, table setting or architectural detail lets you make the foreground dominant while keeping the surrounding location visible. At 30mm, the longer minimum distance is still practical for a tighter detail photograph, but you should not expect the same exaggerated perspective as at 16mm.

Close-focus capability is especially useful because it adds a second visual style to a lens that is otherwise designed for broad scenes. You can photograph a complete room, then move toward a map, plate or textured surface without changing lenses. Keep the front element clear of accidental contact when working at the 19 cm minimum distance.

Is the lens stabilized and weather sealed?

The G2 has no optical image stabilization. Handheld stills therefore depend on your camera body’s stabilization, shutter-speed choice and steadiness. A stabilized Sony or Nikon body can help, but stabilization does not stop subject movement; people, vehicles and waves still require a sufficiently fast shutter speed.

Digital Camera World reports weather sealing. Sealing is protection against suitable dust and moisture exposure, not permission to use the lens underwater or ignore the camera maker’s limits. In rain, keep the mount, zoom and focus controls as dry as practical and wipe the lens before storing it.

Filters and the front thread

The lens uses a 67 mm front filter thread. Digital Camera World specifically praised the ability to fit landscape-friendly filters through this modestly sized thread. A single 67 mm polarizer or neutral-density filter can therefore serve travel work without the oversized holders often associated with ultra-wide lenses. Very wide scenes can make polarizer effects uneven across the sky, so inspect the result rather than assuming maximum polarization is always desirable.

What are the size, weight and viewing specifications?

The published review lists a 75 × 104 mm body and a weight of about 450 g. Those dimensions make the lens relatively easy to carry on a full-frame mirrorless body, although the camera body, spare battery and filters still determine the total travel load.

Specification Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 G2
Model A064
Format Full frame
Mounts Sony E and Nikon Z
Focal-length range 16–30mm
Maximum aperture f/2.8 throughout the zoom
Optical construction 16 elements in 12 groups
Diaphragm 9 blades
Angle of view 107–71.5°
Minimum focus 0.19 m at 16mm; 0.30 m at 30mm
Dimensions 75 × 104 mm
Weight Approximately 450 g
Optical stabilization None
Filter thread 67 mm
Weather sealing Reported by Digital Camera World’s 2026 review

The 107–71.5° angle-of-view figures explain why the lens feels dramatically different at opposite ends: 16mm covers a very broad scene, while 30mm narrows the view enough for more selective framing. The exact composition still depends on your camera’s sensor format and aspect ratio.

How does it compare with the Sigma 16-28mm and Nikon Z 17-28mm?

The closest alternatives differ mainly in reach and mount choice. The Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN is a direct competitor for Sony E and L-mount users, while the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is Nikon-only and based on the older Tamron design. The G2 is the only option in this comparison that combines a 16mm start with a 30mm end and versions for both Sony E and Nikon Z.

Lens Widest/longest focal length Mount availability What is established in the available review material
Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 G2 16–30mm Sony E, Nikon Z 450 g; no optical stabilization; 67 mm filter thread; weather sealing reported; 0.19/0.30 m close focus; fast, accurate AF and edge-to-edge sharpness reported by Digital Camera World.

Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 17–28mm Nikon Z only Based on the older Tamron design; comparative weight, filter, stabilization and close-focus figures are not stated in the cited material.

Choose the G2 over the Sigma when 30mm reach, Nikon Z compatibility or the reported weather sealing and close-focus combination matter more than other system considerations. Choose the Nikon 17-28mm when you already use Nikon Z and its established 17–28mm format meets your needs; the G2’s 16mm and 30mm endpoints are the reasons to move beyond that older range. Sony E photographers should weigh the G2’s extra reach against the Sigma’s established 16–28mm alternative rather than assuming one is universally superior.

Should you buy the Sony E or Nikon Z version?

Buy the mount that matches the full-frame camera system you already own. The optical concept is offered in both mounts, but lenses are not interchangeable between Sony E and Nikon Z bodies. A mount adapter should not be treated as an automatic solution: compatibility, autofocus behavior, weather sealing and firmware support can vary, and no adapter results are established here.

For a Sony E travel kit, the decision is mainly about whether 30mm is worth prioritizing over competing 16–28mm options. For Nikon Z, the G2 adds a 16mm starting point and a 30mm end to a system where the cited alternative is the Nikon-only 17–28mm based on the older design.

How much does the Tamron 16-30mm G2 cost?

Tamron Americas listed a US launch retail price of $929 in 2025. Digital Camera World’s 2026 review lists launch pricing of £849 in the UK and AU$1,799 in Australia. These are regional launch figures, not a guarantee of today’s selling price; exchange rates, tax, retailer promotions and inventory can change the amount.

Before ordering, confirm the exact mount, current stock, firmware information and regional warranty. A lower price on an imported unit may come with different support or return terms. Because prices are volatile, compare the delivered total rather than the headline lens price alone.

Who is the Tamron 16-30mm G2 best for?

The lens makes the most sense for a full-frame Sony E or Nikon Z photographer who wants one compact ultra-wide zoom for varied travel scenes. Its strongest audience includes:

  • Travel photographers who move between landscapes, interiors, street scenes and details.
  • Landscape shooters who value 16mm coverage and a 67 mm filter thread.
  • Architecture and interior photographers who need broad framing and reported edge-to-edge sharpness.
  • Handheld shooters using a stabilized camera body or comfortable managing shutter speed without optical stabilization.
  • Photographers who prefer a 30mm endpoint to reduce lens changes during a day of exploring.

It is less compelling if you require built-in optical stabilization independent of the camera body, need a different mount, or want a longer telephoto reach. It also is not a substitute for a standard zoom when you regularly photograph subjects beyond 30mm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you get the best results in the field?

  1. Set the focal length deliberately. Start at 16mm when the scene is physically constrained or needs strong foreground depth. Move toward 24–30mm when edges look stretched or the subject needs a more natural proportion.
  2. Control the shutter speed. Since there is no optical stabilization, use your body’s stabilization if available and choose a shutter speed that also freezes the subject. Stabilization can reduce camera shake; it cannot freeze moving people or vehicles.
  3. Use the close-focus range creatively. At 16mm, work as close as 0.19 m for a foreground-led composition. At 30mm, remember the minimum distance is 0.30 m and leave enough room to avoid touching the front element.
  4. Level the camera for architecture. Ultra-wide lenses make converging verticals obvious when the camera points upward or downward. Keep the camera level when straight walls and columns matter, then reframe by moving your position.
  5. Pack the right filter size. The 67 mm thread accepts landscape-oriented filters, but check that your filter holder does not intrude into the 16mm frame. Inspect skies through a polarizer because ultra-wide coverage can reveal uneven polarization.
  6. Check firmware and customization before departure. Tamron Lens Utility is supported as a product feature, so configure any desired compatible controls at home and verify the lens communicates correctly with your camera body.
  7. Protect the sealing in bad weather. Weather resistance helps with ordinary dust and moisture exposure, but dry the lens and mount before packing it away and follow your camera manufacturer’s limits.

What are the main compromises?

  • No optical stabilization: handheld performance depends on the camera body and technique.
  • Limited mount choice: only Sony E and Nikon Z versions are identified for this model.
  • Ultra-wide perspective requires discipline: people and architecture near the edges can look stretched, especially at 16mm.
  • Thirty millimeters is useful but not telephoto: photographers who need portraits or distant details will still need another lens.
  • Evidence is review-based rather than laboratory-scored: the sharpness and autofocus conclusions come from Digital Camera World’s assessment, with no consistent citable lab dataset supplied.

Is the Tamron 16-30mm G2 worth buying?

For Sony E and Nikon Z full-frame travelers, yes—provided you value range and portability more than optical stabilization. The combination of 16mm breadth, 30mm flexibility, constant f/2.8, close focus, 450 g weight and a 67 mm filter thread addresses the situations that make ultra-wide lenses inconvenient to carry. The independent review’s sharpness, autofocus and weather-sealing findings support that practical case.

Make the purchase only after checking the current regional price, mount, stock and warranty. If your camera lacks stabilization or your work depends on frozen moving subjects, budget for the technique and shutter-speed compromises created by the absent optical stabilizer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 16-30mm G2 replace a 24-70mm travel zoom?

Not completely. It covers the wide end more strongly and reaches 30mm, but it does not provide the normal-to-telephoto range used for many portraits and distant details. It works best as a compact one-lens solution for wide-focused trips or as the ultra-wide partner to a longer zoom.

Is the G2 suitable for video work?

The available review confirms fast, accurate autofocus but does not provide controlled video tests for focus breathing, motor noise or stabilization behavior. Treat it as a promising wide video option only after checking those characteristics with your specific camera and workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I verify when buying an imported copy?

Check that the box and serial number correspond to your camera mount, then confirm the seller’s regional warranty, return policy, firmware support and delivered tax or duty. Launch prices in the US, UK and Australia are different, so a low converted price may not represent the final cost.

Does the 16mm setting require special composition care?

Yes. Very wide framing can make people and straight lines near the edges appear stretched. Keep important subjects away from the extreme edges when possible, level the camera for architecture, and move toward the 20–24mm range when you want less dramatic perspective.
