To change keyboard, mouse, or trackpad settings on a tablet, connect the accessory first, then open the settings for your operating system. On many Android tablets, keyboard controls are under Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard, while touchpad controls are under Settings > System > Touchpad. On iPad, mouse and trackpad options are generally under Settings > General, with pointer visibility and appearance under Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. Menu names vary by Android maker, tablet model, and software version; if a path does not match, search Settings for “physical keyboard,” “touchpad,” “mouse,” or “pointer.”

What should I check before changing tablet input settings?

First connect or pair the keyboard, mouse, or trackpad. Some device-specific settings do not appear until the tablet recognizes the accessory. Then check the tablet model and operating-system version: Android manufacturers can move or rename controls, and accessory support differs between devices.

Also identify what kind of accessory you have. A mouse and a trackpad may share pointer-speed controls, but options such as tap-to-click and multi-finger gestures apply to trackpads, not necessarily to a mouse. If you are buying an accessory, confirm its compatibility with your exact tablet and OS version, and check that its keyboard layout matches the one you want to type with.

It also helps to decide what you want to change before opening Settings. If keys produce unexpected characters, look for the physical keyboard layout. If the pointer moves too quickly, look for cursor or tracking speed. If scrolling goes in the wrong direction, look for Reverse scrolling or Natural Scrolling. If the pointer is difficult to see, focus on accessibility and pointer appearance controls rather than keyboard settings.

How do I pair a keyboard or pointing device with an Android tablet?

For a Bluetooth keyboard, put it into pairing mode, then open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the keyboard. Google documents this flow for Android; labels may differ slightly by manufacturer. A compatible Bluetooth mouse or other pointing accessory is generally paired through the device’s Bluetooth or connected-device settings as well.

  1. Turn on the accessory and put it into pairing mode. Follow its own pairing instructions if needed.
  2. On the tablet, open Settings, then look for Connected devices, Bluetooth, or a similarly named section.
  3. Choose Pair new device if that option appears, and select the accessory from the list.
  4. After pairing, return to Settings and search for the accessory-specific controls described below.

If it does not appear in the list, check that the accessory is in pairing mode and that you selected the correct tablet settings section. For a keyboard case with an integrated touchpad, verify that both the keyboard and touchpad are supported and recognized; seeing keyboard controls does not by itself confirm that touchpad options will be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pairing and configuring are separate steps. The pairing screen establishes the connection; keyboard layout, modifier behavior, cursor speed, and scrolling are adjusted in the relevant input settings afterward. If the accessory appears in the paired-device list but a control is missing, search Settings for the type of input device rather than repeatedly pairing it.

How do I change physical-keyboard settings on Android?

On supported Android versions, open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard. Google’s Android Help lists controls for the keyboard layout, the on-screen keyboard, keyboard shortcuts, and modifier keys. Some of these steps may work only on Android 14 or newer, and a tablet maker may use a different menu path.

  • Keyboard layout: Choose the layout that matches the physical keys. A mismatch can make the characters you type differ from the labels printed on the keyboard.
  • Show the on-screen keyboard: Turn on the option to keep the software keyboard available while a physical keyboard is connected, if your tablet offers it.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Use the shortcut list to see the combinations recognized by the device.
  • Modifier keys: Adjust supported keys such as Caps Lock, Ctrl, and Alt if their default behavior does not suit your keyboard.

These controls describe the physical keyboard connected to the tablet. They are separate from settings for the tablet’s on-screen keyboard, which may have its own language, typing, and layout options.

When choosing a layout, compare the setting with the key labels and the characters you actually need to type. Layout selection is not the same as changing the keyboard’s physical keycaps: it tells the tablet how to interpret the keyboard. If letters or punctuation do not match what you expect, check this setting before assuming the keyboard is faulty.

The shortcut list is useful when you are moving between touch input and keyboard input or trying to learn which combinations the tablet recognizes. Modifier-key controls address the behavior of keys such as Ctrl, Alt, and Caps Lock; they do not change pointer speed or touchpad clicking. These are different settings, even when they are all available from the same physical-keyboard area.

Where are mouse and touchpad settings on Android?

For a connected keyboard’s built-in touchpad, the stock Android path documented by Google is Settings > System > Touchpad. Available options include Tap to click, Reverse scrolling, Bottom-right tap, and Cursor speed. The touchpad menu may not appear until the tablet detects a compatible touchpad.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Use the controls to address the specific behavior you want to change:

  • Cursor speed: Adjust how quickly the pointer moves in response to touchpad movement.
  • Reverse scrolling: Change the direction content moves when you scroll.
  • Tap to click: Enable or disable clicking by tapping the touchpad instead of physically pressing it.
  • Bottom-right tap: Configure a touchpad corner tap where that option is provided.

A standalone mouse may expose fewer controls, or the tablet may place its options elsewhere. Search Settings for mouse or pointer if you do not find the touchpad menu. Do not assume that a touchpad gesture setting will also change how a mouse clicks or scrolls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These options solve different problems. Cursor speed changes pointer movement; Reverse scrolling changes the direction of content when you scroll. Tap to click and Bottom-right tap concern touchpad input, not the speed of the pointer. If only one behavior is inconvenient, change that control first so you can tell whether it addressed the issue.

Why do Android settings look different on Samsung or Xiaomi tablets?

Android menu paths are not universal. Samsung and Xiaomi document their own paths, and the available options can depend on the tablet model and software.

On compatible Samsung Galaxy tablets, the documented keyboard path is Settings > General management > Physical keyboard. Samsung lists options such as Show on-screen keyboard, Keyboard shortcuts, Change language shortcut, and Customize keys. If the tablet is in Samsung DeX, keyboard, mouse, and touchpad configuration can also be found in a Settings > Samsung DeX area. DeX is a desktop-style mode, so check its settings when the accessory behaves differently there than it does in the tablet’s regular interface.

Xiaomi’s documented example for the REDMI Pad SE 8.7 is Settings > Additional settings > Languages and input > Keyboard, mouse, and track pad. That menu includes options for the on-screen keyboard, shortcuts, modifier keys, and pointer speed. Treat this as a path for that model, not a general Android instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your manufacturer’s menu differs, use the Settings search field. Try physical keyboard, touchpad, mouse, or pointer. If search returns no relevant result, confirm that the accessory is connected and check the support information for your exact tablet and software version.

Searching is especially useful when a menu has a manufacturer-specific name or sits outside the stock Android path. The Samsung and Xiaomi examples show why copying a path from another tablet can lead to a dead end: even when the same type of control exists, its location and label may differ. Treat the search result and your model’s current support instructions as more relevant than a path for a different device.

How do I adjust a mouse or trackpad on iPad?

Apple supports Bluetooth mouse and trackpad use on iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later. Pair the accessory under Settings > Bluetooth, then return to Settings to adjust its behavior. Mouse and trackpad controls are in General; pointer appearance and accessibility controls are in Pointer Control.

  1. Pair the accessory: Put the mouse or trackpad into pairing mode, open Settings > Bluetooth, and select it when it appears.
  2. Adjust mouse behavior: Open Settings > General > Trackpad & Mouse. Apple lists tracking speed, Natural Scrolling, and the finger used for Secondary Click as adjustable options.
  3. Adjust trackpad behavior: Depending on the connected accessory and the options shown, open Settings > General > Trackpad or Settings > General > Trackpad & Mouse. Available controls include tracking speed, Natural Scrolling, Tap to Click, and Two-Finger Secondary Click.
  4. Change pointer appearance or scrolling: Open Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. Options listed by Apple include Increase Contrast, Automatically Hide Pointer, Colour, Pointer Size, Pointer Animations, and Scrolling Speed.

Natural Scrolling changes scrolling direction, while Tracking Speed changes how quickly the pointer moves. If the pointer is hard to see, Pointer Control is the section to check for contrast, colour, size, and hiding behavior; if page movement feels too fast or slow, adjust scrolling speed there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a direct answer to “How do I adjust pointer speed on an iPad?”, first identify whether you mean pointer movement or page scrolling. Use Tracking Speed in the mouse or trackpad controls to change how quickly the pointer travels across the screen. Use Scrolling Speed in Pointer Control to change how quickly a page moves when you scroll. They are separate adjustments, so changing one may not fix the other.

The names of the General menus can also differ depending on the connected accessory and the options shown. If you do not see Trackpad & Mouse, first confirm that the mouse or trackpad is paired and recognized, then look in Settings > General for the trackpad or mouse controls that are available on that setup. Check that the iPad runs iPadOS 13.4 or later for Bluetooth mouse or trackpad support. The precise menu wording can depend on which input device is connected; do not assume the absence of one combined menu means every pointer control is unavailable.

How do I keep the on-screen keyboard visible with a physical keyboard?

On Android, open the physical-keyboard settings and enable Use on-screen keyboard or the similarly named show-on-screen-keyboard option, when available. The exact label varies: Google describes the option in Android’s physical-keyboard settings, while Samsung lists Show on-screen keyboard.

On iPad, if a connected mouse or trackpad has hidden the software keyboard, tap the keyboard button in the lower-right area of the screen and choose the control to show the software keyboard. The keyboard button may only be relevant while a physical input accessory is connected and the software keyboard is hidden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This setting is useful when you want to keep using a physical keyboard but need the software keyboard available on screen as well. If the option is absent on Android, confirm that the tablet recognizes the physical keyboard and search for “physical keyboard” in Settings; the exact control and label depend on the manufacturer and software version.

What should I do if a setting or accessory option is missing?

Start with connection and compatibility rather than assuming the tablet is missing a feature. Many controls are conditional on a recognized accessory, and the correct path depends on the OS, manufacturer, model, and mode.

  1. Reconnect the accessory. Confirm it is paired or physically attached, then reopen Settings. A touchpad menu may only appear once the tablet detects the touchpad.
  2. Search Settings. Try “physical keyboard,” “touchpad,” “mouse,” and “pointer.” This is often faster than following a path written for another tablet maker.
  3. Check the operating-system version. Google notes that some Android steps apply only to Android 14 and newer. Apple’s stated Bluetooth mouse and trackpad support threshold is iPadOS 13.4 or later.
  4. Check the exact model’s support information. A path documented for one Samsung or Xiaomi tablet should not be assumed to exist on every Android device.
  5. Check the accessory and its generation. Similar product names can cover accessories with different capabilities, and compatibility limitations may affect gestures or scrolling.

If the accessory pairs but its expected controls remain absent, the tablet may not expose those controls for that device or software combination. Confirm compatibility with the tablet maker and accessory documentation before replacing a working accessory or resetting the tablet.

For a missing Trackpad & Mouse menu on iPad, work through the same checks in order: make sure the Bluetooth accessory is connected, confirm iPadOS 13.4 or later, and inspect the General settings that appear for that device. On Android, do not rely on an iPad path or another brand’s Android path; search using the accessory type and verify the model-specific instructions.

How do Android and iPad handle these settings differently?

Both platforms let you adjust input behavior, but Android menu placement varies more by manufacturer, while iPadOS divides mouse and trackpad behavior from pointer accessibility settings.

Setting or task Android tablets iPad
Pairing Usually in Connected devices or Bluetooth; Google documents Connected devices > Pair new device for a keyboard. Settings > Bluetooth for a supported Bluetooth mouse or trackpad.
Physical keyboard layout and modifier keys Physical keyboard settings on supported versions; manufacturer path and labels vary. The supplied iPad guidance focuses on mouse and trackpad settings; consult the keyboard’s and iPad’s available settings for keyboard-specific options.
Pointer speed and scrolling Touchpad options can include cursor speed and Reverse scrolling; mouse controls depend on the device. General settings include tracking speed and Natural Scrolling; Pointer Control includes Scrolling Speed.
Secondary click Some touchpads offer a Bottom-right tap option. Mouse settings can select the finger for Secondary Click; trackpad settings can offer Two-Finger Secondary Click.
On-screen keyboard Enable the show/use on-screen keyboard option in physical-keyboard settings if offered. Use the keyboard button near the lower-right corner to show the software keyboard when it is hidden.
Pointer accessibility Search for pointer controls; options depend on the maker and tablet. Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control includes appearance and scrolling options.

For everyday adjustments, the practical distinction is where to look and which control matches the problem. Android users may need to account for manufacturer menus and may find keyboard and touchpad controls in different places. On iPad, General handles input behavior such as tracking and scrolling direction, while Pointer Control handles pointer visibility, appearance, animations, and scrolling speed.

Which compatibility details matter most?

Before buying or troubleshooting, check four things: the tablet model, its OS version, the accessory’s connection method, and the keyboard layout. For Samsung, also check whether you are using the regular tablet interface or Samsung DeX, since DeX has its own configuration area. On iPad, verify that the OS meets the iPadOS 13.4 threshold for Bluetooth mouse or trackpad support.

For trackpad features, confirm the specific accessory generation as well as the connection. Apple states that iPadOS does not support scrolling or other gestures with Apple Magic Mouse (1st generation) or Magic Trackpad (1st generation). Pairing an accessory therefore does not guarantee that every expected gesture will work.

When choosing an accessory, match the product to the task: a Bluetooth keyboard for tablet use, a wireless mouse for tablet pointer control, a tablet keyboard case with trackpad for an integrated setup, or a compatible standalone trackpad. Check the exact model and OS requirements rather than relying only on a broad product label. Compatibility and the controls available on your tablet matter more than assuming every accessory will offer identical gestures or settings.

Sources and platform guidance

The Android paths and controls above follow Google Android Help’s guidance on using a physical keyboard with a tablet, supplemented by Samsung Support’s Galaxy tablet and Samsung DeX instructions and Xiaomi Support’s REDMI Pad SE 8.7 example. The iPad steps follow Apple Support’s Bluetooth mouse and trackpad guidance and the iPad User Guide’s mouse and trackpad settings. Because menus and options can change with device and software versions, use the tablet’s own Settings search and current model-specific support details when labels differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a first-generation Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad with an iPad?

They may connect, but Apple says iPadOS does not support scrolling or other gestures with the first-generation Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. If gestures are essential, confirm the accessory generation before relying on it.

Does every Android tablet support the same physical keyboard options?

No. Google notes that some documented steps apply only to Android 14 and newer, and manufacturers may change menu paths or which controls are available. Check the software version and support details for your exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my tablet recognize a keyboard but not show touchpad controls?

Keyboard and touchpad recognition can be separate, particularly with a keyboard case. Reconnect the accessory and search Settings for “touchpad”; if the option remains absent, verify that the tablet and accessory combination supports that touchpad.

How do I adjust pointer speed on an iPad?

Open Settings > General and look for Trackpad & Mouse or the trackpad controls shown for your connected accessory. Adjust Tracking Speed for pointer movement. For page scrolling speed, open Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control and adjust Scrolling Speed.

Why can’t I find Trackpad & Mouse in iPad Settings?

First make sure the Bluetooth mouse or trackpad is paired and recognized, then check Settings > General for the controls available with that accessory. Apple’s Bluetooth mouse and trackpad support requires iPadOS 13.4 or later, and menu wording can depend on the device connected.

Can I keep the software keyboard open while a physical keyboard is connected?

On Android, enable Use on-screen keyboard or Show on-screen keyboard in physical-keyboard settings if your tablet offers it. On iPad, tap the keyboard button near the lower-right corner when the software keyboard is hidden and choose the option to show it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Connect the accessory before looking for its controls. On Android, search Settings if the manufacturer’s path differs; on iPad, use General for mouse and trackpad behavior and Pointer Control for visibility and scrolling speed. Confirm the exact tablet, OS version, and accessory generation when an option is missing or a gesture does not work.
