On a Steam Deck, change SteamOS release streams in Game Mode at STEAM > Settings > System > System Update Channel. Choose Stable, Beta or Preview, then let the offered image download, install and restart the Deck; changing the dropdown alone does not switch the operating system. Stable is the sensible daily channel. Beta and Preview are test streams, and as of October 2026 SteamOS 3.9.5 is already available to all users on Stable.
The same procedure applies to LCD (Jupiter) and OLED (Galileo) Steam Deck models. Back up irreplaceable Desktop Mode files, confirm cloud saves, connect power and use reliable Wi-Fi before accepting a large image.

How do I switch Steam Deck between Stable, Beta and Preview?
Use the supported Game Mode selector, install the image it offers and complete the restart. Do not use Desktop Mode for this consumer switch.
1. Prepare the Deck
- Connect to the internet and plug in a charger. Independent how-to guides recommend power before a large OS download or restart.
- Open Settings > System and photograph the current channel and SteamOS version.
- Check that cloud saves have actually synchronized. Copy documents and other irreplaceable files from Desktop Mode to another device.
- Make a note of non-Flatpak packages, scripts and plugins such as Decky extensions. Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak can disappear during a SteamOS update.
- Do not force-shutdown while the image is downloading, installing or rebooting.
2. Select the channel
- Press the STEAM button while in Game Mode.
- Choose Settings, then System.
- Open System Update Channel. Older builds and videos may show the same control under a heading called Beta Participation.
- Select Stable, Beta or Preview. Read the warning shown on the Deck; Valve can change the wording as channels evolve.
3. Install and verify
- Wait for SteamOS to download and install the offered image. The selector is only an opt-in; it does not swap versions instantly.
- Accept the requested restart and keep the Deck powered until it reaches Game Mode again.
- Return to Settings > System. Confirm both the selected channel and the installed SteamOS version.
- Only then test games, sleep/wake, Wi-Fi and any dock or accessories. A channel can be selected before a newer image has been published, in which case no download appears yet.
Valve’s 16 October 2026 SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta notice describes the process this way: “This update is for the SteamOS Beta and Preview channels, and includes new features that are still being tested. You can opt into this in Settings > System > System Update Channel.”

What do Stable, Beta and Preview actually deliver?
An update channel is a release stream, not a permanent edition of SteamOS. Your Deck checks the selected stream for the next eligible image and remains on its current installation until that image is downloaded and installed.
Stable
Stable is the production stream intended for ordinary play. Valve released SteamOS 3.9.5 “for all users” on 23 October 2026. For a Deck used every day, this channel minimizes exposure to unfinished fixes and regressions.
Recommended Free Tools
Beta
Beta is a testing stream. In 2026 Valve’s SteamOS notes shipped OS test images to both Beta and Preview, so do not assume Beta is only a Steam client beta. Historically, the unified selector mapped Beta to the Steam client beta with the OS on Stable, but the live Valve release notes are the current shipping rule.
Preview
Preview is also a testing stream and is commonly treated as the more experimental path for SteamOS and Steam work. Valve does not publish a permanent rule that every Preview build is riskier than every Beta build; read the current Steam Deck news post for the image your Deck offers.
Which channel should I use for daily play?
Choose Stable unless a current Valve test note names a fix or feature you specifically need and you can tolerate bugs, extra downloads and restarts. Do not move to Preview merely to obtain SteamOS 3.9: Stable already has 3.9.5 as of 23 October 2026.
- Choose Stable for a primary gaming device, travel or a Deck shared with other people.
- Choose Beta when you want the current test stream and can report or work around regressions.
- Choose Preview only when you need unfinished SteamOS work or are deliberately helping test it.
Test channels generally receive updates more often, so plan for additional download time and downtime. Never create an unsupported mix by pairing a Steam client Stable with an OS beta; Valve developer guidance identifies that combination as a source of unexpected bugs. The 2023 client/OS matrix remains useful for understanding the selector’s original design, but 2026 Valve posts explicitly identify Beta and Preview together for OS test releases.
How should I prepare before changing channels?
A normal channel change is designed to preserve installed content, but preparation protects files and third-party customizations that an OS update may affect.

- Record your current channel and version so you can tell whether the offered image installed.
- List non-Flatpak applications, scripts and plugins. SteamOS updates can remove software installed outside Flatpak.
- Use a charger and stable Wi-Fi, and leave enough time for the restart sequence.
- Keep recovery options available if the Deck is being used for important work.
How do I go back to Stable from SteamOS Beta or Preview?
Return through the same menu: select Stable, install the offered Stable image and restart. This returns you to the current Stable release, not necessarily the exact build that was installed before the experiment.
- In Game Mode, open STEAM > Settings > System > System Update Channel.
- Select Stable.
- Allow the Deck to download and install the Stable image.
- Complete the restart without interrupting power.
- Reopen Settings > System and verify the channel and version.
There is no supported menu for selecting an arbitrary historical number such as SteamOS 3.8.x. If Stable has advanced, the Deck receives that current image. XDA’s 31 May 2023 guide described a normal channel change as causing no data loss, but that does not replace a backup of personal files or a record of third-party software.
What should I do if the Deck will not boot after a channel change?
Try the on-device Previous SteamOS entry first, then use Valve’s USB recovery media if that image is missing or also fails.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Try Previous SteamOS
- Choose Power > Shutdown and wait until the Deck is fully off.
- Hold the Quick Access button marked …, then press Power.
- At the boot menu, choose the second entry, Previous SteamOS.
- After it boots, open the normal update screen and check for updates.
This entry is the previous image still stored on the device, not a catalog of every historical release. Valve documented the procedure in the SteamOS 3.6.8 Beta notes for users stuck on Preview updates; an independent September 2026 description says it retains user data.
Create USB recovery media
Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions require a USB key of at least 8GB. On Windows, write the recovery image with Rufus. On macOS or Linux, use Balena Etcher; Linux can also use dd after decompressing the image.
- Download the Deck recovery image from Valve’s SteamOS download page.
- Write it to the USB key with the appropriate utility. The process erases that USB key.
- With the Deck off, hold Volume Up and press Power. Release Volume Up at the startup chime.
- In Boot Manager, choose EFI USB Device.
- Choose Repair SteamOS to reinstall the system while attempting to preserve games and personal content.
- Use Re-image Device (also labeled Wipe Device & Install SteamOS) only when you accept that user data will be erased.
After a repair, install Software Updates from Settings > System before testing the Deck. A recovery image is a repair route, not a supported way to browse and choose any old SteamOS build.
Why is the update channel option missing or not changing?
Most apparent failures are mode, timing or UI-state issues rather than a damaged installation.

“Beta Participation” or “System Update Channel” is missing
Foxy Tech’s August 2026 walkthrough notes that the control is absent in Desktop Mode. Return to Game Mode and open the System settings there. The label can also differ between builds, so look for System Update Channel under the older Beta Participation heading.
No download appears after selecting a channel
If the selected stream has not published a newer image than the one already installed, the Deck has nothing new to download. Confirm the selected channel, run the normal update check and wait for that stream’s next image; this is a waiting state, not proof that the switch failed.
The selector shows Beta after choosing Preview
GitHub issue 11988 reports a Stable-to-Preview UI glitch on both LCD/Jupiter and OLED/Galileo models. The transition can take extra reboots, and the selector may show Beta after the first restart; once the Deck settles, choose Preview again and verify the installed version. The issue remains open, and enabling advanced channels may make the symptom less visible, but that toggle is intended for developers rather than ordinary users.
Do not enable unsupported combinations
Leave Show Advanced Update Channels off unless you are following a specific Valve developer instruction. Valve developer guidance says that Steam client Stable combined with an OS beta is not a supported or tested combination; use the unified consumer choices instead.

Can I change the channel from Desktop Mode or the command line?
Game Mode is the supported consumer path. A third-party man page documents steamos-select-branch with -c for the current branch, -l to list branches, and branch names including stable, beta and main.
Do not treat main as a command-line synonym for the Game Mode label Preview; it is a bleeding-edge OS branch. Valve’s 23 October 2026 SteamOS 3.9 notes also say that scripts and packages are being renamed from steamos- to holo-, with aliases where appropriate, so older command names may continue to work but are not a reason to bypass the Game Mode selector.
Do the same steps work on LCD and OLED Steam Deck models?
Yes. The Game Mode channel control covers both the LCD Jupiter and OLED Galileo Decks. The Stable-to-Preview selector issue reported in GitHub issue 11988 affects both families, so verify the channel and version after any extra reboot.

What is in the current Stable and test streams?
Channel contents move frequently. As of 29 October 2026, Valve’s Stable release is SteamOS 3.9.5, while Beta and Preview continued receiving 3.9.x test images after Stable caught up.
- Valve released SteamOS 3.9.5 for all users on 23 October 2026.
- The 3.9 line updates the Arch base, raises Desktop Mode Plasma from 6.4.3 to 6.7.3 and rebases the Linux kernel on Linux 7.2.
- Valve lists an idle-power improvement on Steam Deck when no audio is playing and a fix for first connections to hidden Wi-Fi networks.
- The default Wi-Fi backend is wpa_supplicant.
- Hibernation is “Not yet enabled on Steam Deck due to an outstanding driver bug.”
Valve’s 16 October 3.9.3 Beta, 21–22 October 3.9.4 Beta and 23 October 3.9.5 Beta notices show why channel labels alone are not enough: read the release note for the exact image offered to your Deck before switching.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Deck say it is up to date immediately after I change channels?
The selector can move to a stream whose newest image is the same one already installed, or whose next image has not been published yet. Check the channel and version, then let the normal update service run again later rather than forcing a reinstall.
Can I switch channels while the Deck is offline?
You can open the selector, but the Deck needs an internet connection to discover and download a different image. Connect before accepting the restart so the installation is not left waiting for its payload.

No. Valve’s 2026 notices identify Beta and Preview together for SteamOS test images, and the relative contents can change from one release to the next. Compare the current release notes instead of assuming the label determines version order.
What happens to a dock, Wi-Fi setup or sleep behavior after switching?
Those are among the functions worth checking after the restart because test images can alter drivers or power behavior. Verify them only after Settings > System confirms the intended channel and installed version.
