If a Switch game will not download, update, or bring its save to a Nintendo Switch 2, use this order: update the console, identify whether the title needs a free update or a paid Upgrade Pack, check the title’s compatibility listing, verify storage, then retry. Nintendo’s documented update path is System Settings > System > System Update; if that update fails, restart the console and try again.

The key distinction is that a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original game with an Upgrade Pack, while some games receive a free Switch 2 update and others are merely compatible without either upgrade. Save transfers also have two different methods: local transfer when both consoles are available, and server transfer when the old console will be sold, traded in, or given away.

What should I do first when a Switch 2 game will not download or update?

Work through the problem in this sequence rather than repeatedly starting the same download. Most failures become easier to diagnose once the console firmware, game category, compatibility status, and storage format are known.

  1. Update the console. Open System Settings > System > System Update. Nintendo says the console normally downloads the latest system software automatically while online, but you can start the check manually. If the update does not complete, restart the console and run the same check again.
  2. Identify the game’s upgrade path. Determine whether the title is a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, a game with a free Switch 2 update, or simply a compatible Nintendo Switch game.
  3. Check the individual title listing. Compatibility, enhancement features, controller requirements, and save behavior can differ from one game to another. Use the game’s Nintendo eShop or Nintendo compatibility listing rather than assuming that another title’s behavior applies.
  4. Check available storage and the card type. Switch 2 software requires internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card. A conventional microSD card cannot be used for Switch 2 software.
  5. Restart and retry. A restart is Nintendo’s documented first recovery step for a failed system update. It is also a sensible point to retry a stalled game download after the console has been updated and storage has been checked.

Does my game need a free update or a paid Upgrade Pack?

Not every Switch 2 enhancement requires a purchase. Nintendo separates games into Switch 2 Editions, titles with free Switch 2 updates, and compatible games that do not receive a Switch 2-specific enhancement.

Route What it means What you need How it is obtained
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition The original Nintendo Switch game is bundled with its Upgrade Pack. Nintendo describes it as “a bundle that includes the original game and its upgrade pack.” The underlying physical or digital Switch game, plus the Upgrade Pack unless your membership benefit covers it. Purchase through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or a retailer selling a digital code. Upgrade Pack contents vary by title.
Free Nintendo Switch 2 update A selected game receives a no-cost update that can add visual improvements, higher frame rates, HDR, faster loading, or GameShare support, depending on the title. The eligible Switch game and the update listed for that title. Download the game update when it is offered. Nintendo’s free-update list gives the title-specific features and availability date.
Compatible without a Switch 2 upgrade The original Switch game runs on Switch 2 but has no paid Upgrade Pack or free Switch 2-specific update listed. A compatible copy of the original game and any ordinary game updates it requires. No Upgrade Pack is needed. Compatibility remains title-specific.

Nintendo’s free-update list is separate from its Switch 2 Edition list. For example, Nintendo lists a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe free update as available on September 1, 2026. That date applies to that title’s update, not to every game.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members receive selected Upgrade Packs at no additional charge when they own the underlying game and keep an active membership. Nintendo specifically lists the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Upgrade Packs in this benefit. It does not make every Upgrade Pack free.

How do I update Switch 2 before troubleshooting a game?

Use the console’s built-in updater before changing game settings or buying an Upgrade Pack. Nintendo lists system version 23.0.1, released September 30, 2026, as the current version in its October 30, 2026 support information. Nintendo says 23.0.1 fixed an issue from version 23.0.0 in which software could sometimes take a long time to start, pause, or close.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll down and select System.
  3. Choose System Update.
  4. Allow the console to check for and download the latest version while connected to the internet.
  5. Install the update and let the console restart if prompted.
  6. If the update cannot be performed, restart the console and repeat the same path. This restart-and-retry instruction comes directly from Nintendo Support.

If the console reports that it is up to date but a particular game still refuses to start or download, continue with the title-specific checks below. A current system version does not turn an unsupported game into a supported one, and it does not substitute for an Upgrade Pack when a title requires one.

How can I check whether a game is compatible with Switch 2?

Check the exact game page or Nintendo’s compatibility information before repeating a download. Nintendo warns that some Switch games may be unsupported or only partially compatible, and that compatibility information can change as testing and updates continue.

Compatible

A compatible title should run on Switch 2, subject to the game’s own update requirements. If it is a digital game, the Nintendo Account that owns it must be available on the target console. If it is physical, the game card still has to be inserted when the title requires it.

Compatible with limitations

This label means the game can run but has a known restriction. The limitation may involve a particular controller, partial functionality, or a documented issue. Read the title’s notes rather than treating the label as identical to full compatibility.

Unsupported

An unsupported title is not made compatible by downloading an Upgrade Pack or repeating the game download. No normal Switch 2 installation path can make an unsupported game work as a compatible title.

Nintendo says its compatibility testing starts games and conducts limited testing. Therefore, a compatibility label is useful guidance, not a promise that every feature behaves exactly as it did on the original Switch. Check the title again after a game or system update because Nintendo can revise its compatibility status.

Why will a Switch 2 game not download after an upgrade or console transfer?

A failed download usually falls into one of four categories: the title is on the wrong upgrade path, the game is incompatible, the target lacks suitable storage, or the transfer has finished but the software still needs to be downloaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The title needs a different upgrade path

Do not purchase an Upgrade Pack merely because a game has improved graphics on Switch 2. First verify whether Nintendo lists a paid Switch 2 Edition or a free update for that exact title. If the game has only a free update, look for the ordinary game-update prompt instead of an Upgrade Pack purchase. If it has a Switch 2 Edition, the original game must still be owned; the Upgrade Pack does not replace ownership of the underlying title.

The game is incompatible or has a limitation

Return to the title’s compatibility listing and read its notes. A download attempt cannot resolve an unsupported title, and a limited-compatibility title may need a specific controller or may not provide every original feature.

The target storage is full or the card is the wrong type

Check free space on the target console before deleting and redownloading repeatedly. Switch 2 includes 256 GB of UFS internal storage and supports compatible microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards for software storage; conventional microSD cards can only be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Nintendo Switch.

The transfer completed but the software is being downloaded again

This is expected for digital software in a transfer. Nintendo transfers digital software information, users, settings, and eligible save data, then downloads the digital software onto the target Switch 2. A game icon that asks for a download does not by itself mean the save transfer failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The account or purchase does not match

Use the Nintendo Account that owns the digital game or initiated the relevant transfer. For a server transfer, Nintendo requires the same Nintendo Account that started the upload when retrieving the data during the target console’s initial setup.

What storage does Switch 2 require for game upgrades?

Use internal storage or a microSD Express card for Switch 2 games and their upgrade data. The console’s 256 GB UFS storage is built in, and Nintendo lists support for compatible microSD Express cards up to 2 TB.

  • Correct expansion format: microSD Express.
  • Not a software-storage solution: a conventional microSD card.
  • After a transfer: confirm free space on the target before the redownload begins.
  • If space is available but the download still fails: recheck the game’s compatibility and upgrade category, then restart and retry.

A conventional microSD card may still let you view screenshots and videos captured on the original Nintendo Switch, but Nintendo does not support it as Switch 2 game storage. Buying or inserting the wrong card therefore cannot fix a Switch 2 software download.

How do I transfer saves locally when both consoles are available?

Use local communication when the original Switch and the target Switch 2 are together. Nintendo performs this transfer during the target console’s initial setup and requires an internet connection.

Prepare both consoles

  1. Connect the source Switch and the target Switch 2 to the internet.
  2. Link every relevant user on the source console to a Nintendo Account. Unlinked users have different deletion consequences during transfer.
  3. Check each game’s Switch 2 compatibility information, including controller requirements and any title-specific save notes.
  4. Confirm that the target has enough internal or microSD Express storage for software that will be downloaded after the transfer.

Run the local transfer

  1. Start the target Switch 2 and follow the initial setup until it offers the transfer option.
  2. Keep both consoles close together and follow the on-screen local-communication instructions.
  3. Select the source console and users when prompted, then allow the transfer to complete without powering off either system.
  4. After setup, let the target download the transferred digital software.
  5. Open the transferred games and verify the relevant saves before changing or disposing of the source console.

Nintendo says local transfer moves users, linked Nintendo Accounts, settings, digital software information, and eligible save data. Supported Save Data Cloud-backed-up saves belonging to linked users remain on the source and are copied to Switch 2. Save data belonging to unlinked users, and save data for games that do not support Save Data Cloud Backup, can be deleted from the source console after transfer.

That deletion rule is why linking users before starting is important. Keep the source console intact until the target games and saves have been checked; do not initialize, sell, or give away the source immediately after the transfer screen reports completion.

How does server transfer work when the old console will be unavailable?

Choose server transfer for a trade-in, sale, or gift when you will not have the source console beside the new Switch 2. It is convenient in that situation but has a more consequential source-console step.

  1. On the source console, start the server-transfer process and upload the transfer data.
  2. Understand that Nintendo initializes the source console after the upload and deletes all user data from it.
  3. Complete the target Switch 2’s initial setup using the same Nintendo Account that started the transfer.
  4. Retrieve the server-transfer data when the target offers that option, then allow the digital software to download.
  5. Complete retrieval before the displayed download deadline. Nintendo says the transfer data is stored on its server for up to one year.

Server-transfer data can be retrieved only during the target Switch 2’s initial setup. If the target has already been set up, Nintendo says it must be initialized again before the server transfer can be retrieved. Do not choose this method unless you accept that the source will be initialized after upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Source availability Both consoles are present together. The source will be unavailable after upload.
Source-console consequence Deletion depends on user linking and Save Data Cloud support; review those risks before starting. The source is initialized and all user data is deleted after upload.
Target timing Performed during the target’s initial setup without a one-year server-storage dependency. Must be retrieved during initial setup, and Nintendo stores the data for up to one year.
Best use Both systems are available and you want to verify the result before retiring the old one. The old system is being traded in, sold, or given away.

What should I do if a save is missing after transfer?

First determine whether the affected user was linked and whether the game supports Save Data Cloud Backup. Those two facts govern what Nintendo says can remain on the source after a local transfer.

  • Linked user with a supported cloud-backed-up save: Nintendo says the save remains on the source and is copied to Switch 2.
  • Unlinked user: Nintendo warns that this save can be deleted from the source after local transfer.
  • Game without Save Data Cloud Backup: the save can also be deleted from the source after local transfer, even when other games transfer normally.
  • Server transfer: retrieval depends on the same Nintendo Account that started the upload and must occur during the target’s initial setup.

Do not assume that a successful software redownload proves every save was preserved. Open each important game on the target, select the correct user, and confirm its progress before initializing or disposing of the source console.

When should I contact Nintendo Support?

Escalate to Nintendo Support or an authorized service route when the console still cannot update or transfer after the documented checks. There is no single universal error-code procedure for every Switch 2 game; the correct remedy can depend on the title, Nintendo Account, transfer method, and console state.

Have the following information ready:

  • The exact game title and whether the copy is physical or digital.
  • Whether Nintendo lists it as a Switch 2 Edition, a free-update title, compatible with limitations, or unsupported.
  • The console system version, such as 23.0.1 in Nintendo’s September 30, 2026 release information.
  • The transfer method used: local or server.
  • Any displayed error code or message, without omitting punctuation or numbers.
  • Whether the target has adequate internal or microSD Express storage.

A support agent can then distinguish a firmware problem from a title-compatibility issue, a purchase or account issue, or a transfer-state problem without requiring you to repeat unrelated downloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before and after the transfer?

Before starting

  • Update the source and target consoles through System Settings > System > System Update.
  • Link every user whose saves matter to a Nintendo Account.
  • Check each title’s compatibility and upgrade category.
  • Confirm internet access on both consoles for a local transfer.
  • Make sure the target has enough internal or microSD Express storage.
  • Choose local transfer if both consoles will remain available; choose server transfer only when the source will be unavailable.

After completion

  • Allow transferred digital software to redownload on Switch 2.
  • Launch important games with the correct user profile.
  • Verify saves and any title-specific upgrade features.
  • Keep the source console until verification is complete.
  • If a download fails, restart, check storage and compatibility, and then contact Nintendo Support with the exact error details.

How to choose the right fix in one minute

If the console itself is behind on updates, update and restart it first. If the game is listed as a Switch 2 Edition, confirm ownership of the original game and obtain the Upgrade Pack through Nintendo’s listed channels or an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefit. If the title appears on Nintendo’s free-update list, install that update instead of buying an Upgrade Pack. If it is only compatible, troubleshoot storage, account access, and ordinary game updates rather than looking for a Switch 2 upgrade.

For saves, local transfer is the lower-risk choice when both systems are available because you can inspect the target before retiring the source. Server transfer is designed for a source that will be traded in, sold, or given away, but it initializes that source after upload and requires retrieval during the target’s initial setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a normal microSD card to move Switch 2 games?

No. Nintendo says Switch 2 software storage is designed for microSD Express cards, while conventional microSD cards are limited to viewing screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. A normal microSD card therefore cannot solve a Switch 2 game-download problem.

Why does my transferred digital game still show a download button?

Nintendo transfers digital software information during the console transfer, then downloads the software onto the target Switch 2. The download prompt is therefore expected; it does not necessarily indicate that the game’s save data was lost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I retrieve a server transfer after finishing Switch 2 setup?

Not directly. Nintendo says server-transfer data can be retrieved only during the target console’s initial setup. If setup is already complete, the target must be initialized again before retrieval.

Will a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership make every Upgrade Pack free?

No. The benefit applies only to selected Upgrade Packs and requires ownership of the underlying game plus an active membership. Nintendo specifically lists the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Upgrade Packs; other titles may still require purchase.
