Some original Nintendo Switch accessories work with Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility depends on the job. Original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly; the Joy-Con cannot attach to or charge on the Switch 2 console. The original dock cannot be used, although its AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly. Ordinary microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games, and original Joy-Con attachments do not fit Joy-Con 2. The practical approach is to check controllers, physical fit, charging, TV-mode power, storage and game-specific requirements separately rather than treating compatibility as a simple yes-or-no question.
Nintendo’s US support guidance and FAQ are the primary references for these limits. Nintendo’s general game-compatibility overview is marked current as of June 5, 2025, so check the individual game page or Nintendo eShop for a title’s latest status.

Can I use my old Joy-Con with Switch 2?
Yes. Original Joy-Con pair with Switch 2 wirelessly, so they remain useful as detached controllers. They do not physically slide onto the Switch 2 console and cannot charge from the console’s Joy-Con rails.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do I keep original Joy-Con charged?
Use an original Nintendo Switch, an original-Joy-Con-compatible charging grip, or the Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way). Those products are charging solutions for original Joy-Con, not for Joy-Con 2. If your only console is Switch 2, plan for one of these charging options before relying on the older controllers.
Can an original Joy-Con wake a sleeping Switch 2?
Nintendo UK states that the HOME Button on original Switch Joy-Con and original Switch controllers cannot wake a sleeping Switch 2. That specific wake restriction is stated on Nintendo UK’s page; the US compatibility table reviewed for this guide does not spell it out, so treat it as regional Nintendo guidance rather than a universal statement about every market.
Pairing and waking are separate functions: an original Joy-Con can still be a usable wireless controller after Switch 2 is awake, even though its HOME button cannot perform that wake action.
Does the original Switch Pro Controller work?
Yes. The original Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly with Switch 2 and can be charged by connecting its USB cable to the Switch 2 dock. For someone who already owns the older Pro Controller, buying the newer model is optional rather than a compatibility requirement.
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is a feature upgrade, not a prerequisite. Nintendo lists a C Button, remappable GL and GR buttons, and an audio jack among its features. Those additions may justify a replacement for a particular setup, but they do not make the original Pro Controller obsolete for ordinary wireless play.

Which other original Nintendo controllers are supported?
Nintendo lists several older specialty controllers as wirelessly compatible for appropriate games. Their unusual button layouts do not make them universal replacements for Joy-Con or a Pro Controller.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- NES controllers: Nintendo says they work wirelessly for compatible software. Charging requires an original Switch or a compatible original-Joy-Con charging accessory.
- SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers: Nintendo lists them as compatible and says they can charge through USB connected to the Switch 2 dock.
- GameCube controllers: The existing GameCube Controller Adapter works through a USB port on the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. Nintendo’s US FAQ also confirms that previously released GameCube controllers work through that adapter.
Because support is game-dependent, check the controls required by the specific title before assuming that a specialty controller will operate every menu or mode.
Will the original Switch dock work with Switch 2?
No. Nintendo explicitly states, “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” The newer console includes its own dock, and the original dock is not a safe substitute for TV play.
The limitation is more than a question of whether the console fits physically. Nintendo’s dock, power and video requirements differ, so a dock that accepts the USB-C connector is not automatically certified or suitable. Do not assume an unnamed third-party dock works merely because it has the right-shaped port.
Can I reuse the original AC adapter?
Only for direct charging. Nintendo says the original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but its output is insufficient to power Switch 2 in TV mode. For docked play, use the Switch 2 AC adapter with the Switch 2 dock.

Is the original HDMI cable compatible?
Nintendo labels the HDMI cable included with the original Switch as incompatible because the cable standards differ and recommends the cable supplied with Switch 2. This warning applies to that included cable; it does not prove that every separately purchased HDMI cable is unusable. The safest approach is to use the Switch 2-included cable or a cable whose specifications meet Nintendo’s requirements.
Can I reuse my old microSD card?
For Switch 2 game storage, no—unless the card is microSD Express. Nintendo states that “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Switch 2 supports Express cards up to 2 TB, and Nintendo says an internet system update is required when an Express card is first used.
An ordinary, non-Express microSD card from an original Switch can still be read for original screenshots and videos. It cannot save or load Switch 2 games, so the card’s physical size is not enough: look specifically for the microSD Express designation. Nintendo’s US accessory catalog identifies a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card as one example, but any purchase should be checked for the Express standard and the seller’s exact model.
Do original Joy-Con grips, straps and game accessories fit Joy-Con 2?
No. Original Joy-Con straps, grips, charging grips, wheels, Ring-Con, leg strap and original-Joy-Con battery packs are designed around the original Joy-Con shape and do not fit Joy-Con 2. The original adjustable charging stand is also listed as incompatible with Switch 2-era controllers.
Those accessories are not useless. They remain usable with original Joy-Con when a game supports the older hardware. Nintendo specifically identifies original Joy-Con with Ring-Con for Ring Fit Adventure and with the leg strap for supported Nintendo Switch Sports play. Nintendo UK additionally lists the original Switch stylus as compatible.

Which games still need original Joy-Con or other older hardware?
Some software depends on a sensor, camera, shape or attachment that Joy-Con 2 cannot reproduce in the same way. Nintendo’s compatibility guide names these examples:
- Ring Fit Adventure, which uses Ring-Con and the leg strap with original Joy-Con.
- Infrared-camera-dependent portions of 1-2-Switch.
- Game Builder Garage.
- WarioWare: Move It!.
- The Soccer Shoot-Out mode in Nintendo Switch Sports.
Nintendo also says the Switch 2 console does not fit the goggles for Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, so that game cannot be played as before. Other Labo kits have partial physical-fit limitations. A reusable controller and a physical cardboard accessory are separate compatibility questions: keeping an original Joy-Con does not guarantee that every old Labo setup will fit the new console.
The general compatibility overview is dated June 5, 2025. Use it as a starting point, then open the individual game page or Nintendo eShop listing for the current status of a title rather than treating that overview as an October 2026 roster.

No. Nintendo’s US FAQ says Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch. Compatibility is therefore not two-way: selected original controllers work forward with Switch 2, but the newer controllers do not work backward with the older console.
Original and Switch 2 game cards both fit the Switch 2 game-card slot, but physical insertion does not guarantee that a game or mode is compatible. Software support, camera functions, accessories and required controller features still determine whether the title works.

How should I set up an old accessory on Switch 2?
Check the accessory’s function first, then connect it using the path Nintendo supports. The following sequence avoids the most common mismatches.
- Identify the exact accessory. Separate original Joy-Con from Joy-Con 2, the original Pro Controller from the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and ordinary microSD from microSD Express.
- Check the game requirement. If the title uses infrared, Ring-Con, the leg strap, a specialty layout or a GameCube controller, confirm that requirement before starting.
- Pair wireless controllers. Use the Switch 2 controller-pairing process for original Joy-Con, the original Pro Controller or a supported specialty controller. Pairing does not make physical attachment or console charging possible.
- Arrange charging separately. Charge original Joy-Con with an original Switch or compatible original-Joy-Con charging accessory. Charge an original Pro Controller through the Switch 2 dock’s USB connection.
- Use the correct dock and power path. For TV mode, use the Switch 2 dock, its AC adapter and the supplied HDMI cable. The original dock and original AC adapter cannot substitute for that complete TV-mode setup.
- Install the right storage card. Insert a microSD Express card and complete the required internet system update. Keep a non-Express card only for reading old screenshots and videos.
What should I keep from my original Switch setup?
Keep original Joy-Con if you play motion, infrared-camera or attachment-based games, or if you want extra detached controllers. Keep the original Pro Controller if its layout suits you. A GameCube Controller Adapter remains useful for compatible TV-mode games, while specialty NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis pads are worth retaining for the software they were designed to control.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not plan around the original dock, the original Switch HDMI-included cable or a standard microSD card for Switch 2 game storage. Keep those items for the original console or media access only, and buy a Switch 2 dock, AC adapter or microSD Express card when the specific function requires it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What comes in the official Switch 2 Dock Set?
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Dock Set as a replacement or second-TV option. It includes the newer dock, an AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable; the console itself already includes one dock.
Can I use original Joy-Con for multiplayer without buying Joy-Con 2?
Yes, original Joy-Con can serve as detached wireless controllers on Switch 2. You must charge them with an original-Joy-Con charging solution, and a sleeping console may need to be awakened with its own controls because Nintendo UK says the original HOME button cannot wake Switch 2.
Are all third-party Switch 2 docks interchangeable with Nintendo’s dock?
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not certify unnamed third-party docks simply because they use USB-C. For reliable TV mode, use the Switch 2 dock and power equipment specified for the console rather than assuming a physical fit guarantees the required power and video behavior.
What should I check before buying a memory card for Switch 2?
Verify that the listing explicitly says microSD Express, not merely microSD or UHS-I. Nintendo supports Express cards up to 2 TB and requires an internet system update on first use; ordinary cards are limited to reading original screenshots and videos.
