SweetDreamers Ewan Deluxe is worth considering if you want a portable plush soother that can restart when it hears crying, rather than a basic white-noise speaker. It combines ten heartbeat-backed pink- and white-noise tracks, a soft red light, selectable 20-, 40-, and 80-minute timers, continuous playback, a rechargeable control pod, and a washable sheep cover. Independent testing found clear sound, a cry sensor that worked beyond two metres, and battery life close to the maker’s claim. The compromises are a £44.99 UK price, relatively high measured volume at close range, and the need to confirm that a listing is the current rechargeable revision rather than an older AA-battery version.
What is SweetDreamers Ewan Deluxe?
Ewan Deluxe is a plush sheep designed to provide a consistent sleep cue in a nursery, pushchair, or car seat. The removable control pod drives the sounds, red glow, timer and smartCRY microphone, while the soft outer sheep can be detached and washed. A Velcro tail lets you secure the toy to a cot rail or another suitable bar so it remains outside the infant’s immediate sleep area.

Its specification lists a 2,200mAh lithium-ion battery and quotes up to 22 hours of continuous soothing sound with the calming light on, or 35 hours with the light off. Those are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee for every setting or battery age.
Is Ewan Deluxe worth it?
It is a sensible premium choice when the cry-triggered restart, portable plush design and washable cover matter more than getting the cheapest sound machine. Trusted Reviews’ nursery test found crisp, largely undistorted audio and a sensor that detected crying at more than two metres, beyond the maker’s stated one-metre expectation. The same review measured close-range output as high enough to require careful placement and considered £44.99 expensive beside simpler white-noise products.

Choose it for a baby who settles with a heartbeat-style cue and for caregivers who want playback to resume after a timed session. Choose a simpler device if you only need continuous noise, already have a safe speaker, or want to minimise cost and charging chores.
What features does Ewan Deluxe include?
Ten heartbeat-backed sound tracks
The pod offers ten tracks built around a heartbeat with pink- or white-noise elements. Multiple tracks let you try different textures rather than being locked to one recording. Trusted Reviews described the output as clear, with little audible distortion in its nursery testing.
Red sleep light
A soft red glow can run with the audio. Red light is less visually stimulating than a bright white lamp, but the product’s documentation does not claim a medical or sleep-treatment effect. Turning the light off extends the stated battery allowance.
Timers and continuous playback
You can select 20, 40 or 80 minutes, or leave the unit in continuous playback. The timer controls when normal playback stops; the smartCRY behavior depends on which mode you select.
SmartCRY sensor
The sensor listens for crying and can restart Ewan after a timed session. In sleep mode, it can reactivate the unit after a 20-, 40- or 80-minute timeout. It does not provide automatic restarting while continuous playback is selected; in that mode you must switch the unit off manually.
Rechargeable removable pod
The electronics are contained in a pod that can be removed from the plush before cleaning. The instruction record identifies a 2,200mAh lithium-ion cell. Because the published battery tests disabled cry sensing, real-world endurance can differ when the sensor is active and repeatedly restarts playback.

Velcro attachment and washable housing
The tail’s Velcro attachment is intended for a cot rail, pushchair or car seat. The plush housing can be machine-washed at 30°C on a delicate cycle, provided the control pod is removed first.
How long does the rechargeable Ewan last?
The maker claims 22 hours with sound and the red light operating, or 35 hours with sound only. Trusted Reviews measured 21.5 hours with the light and 34 hours without it in a 2026 hands-on test. During that test, cry sensing was disabled, so the figures represent uninterrupted playback rather than a night in which the sensor repeatedly wakes the unit.
| Configuration | SweetDreamers specification | Trusted Reviews test |
|---|---|---|
| Sound with red light | 22 hours continuous soothing sound and light | 21.5 hours; cry sensing disabled |
| Sound with light off | 35 hours uninterrupted sound | 34 hours; cry sensing disabled |
The small difference between the claims and the test is normal for battery measurements: volume, temperature, battery condition and the test equipment all influence runtime. If the sensor restarts playback several times overnight, the total operating time will depend on how often those activations occur. No independent runtime figure with cry sensing enabled was reported, so do not treat the 34- or 35-hour number as a guaranteed sensor-mode duration.
Does Ewan Deluxe really detect crying?
In Trusted Reviews’ nursery test, the smartCRY sensor detected crying from more than two metres, exceeding SweetDreamers’ stated one-metre expectation. That result indicates useful sensitivity in an open room, but it is not a promise that every cry, room layout or background noise will produce the same response.
Use a timed mode when you want the sensor to act as a wake-up trigger after playback ends. Once a 20-, 40- or 80-minute cycle has completed, the sensor can restart the unit when it hears crying. In continuous mode there is no timeout for the sensor to monitor; playback simply continues until you turn Ewan off.
What can affect detection?
- Distance and orientation between the microphone and the infant can change the signal reaching the sensor.
- Doors, thick fabrics and other barriers may reduce the sound that reaches the pod.
- Other noises can make any sound-triggered system react unpredictably.
- A sensor restart is not the same as two-way monitoring; Ewan does not send an alert or let you speak through the toy.
For a first setup, run a short timed cycle while you are nearby, then make a normal cry-like sound from the intended sleeping position and check that the unit restarts. Treat that as a placement check, not a guarantee of overnight performance.

How loud is Ewan Deluxe at a baby’s position?
Trusted Reviews measured a wide range because the output changes with distance and the selected track. At 30cm, readings were 43–63dB; at 100cm, 38–58dB; and at 200cm, 35–55dB. The reviewer called the sound crisp and clear but warned that close-range volume can become high.
| Measurement distance | Measured range | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 30cm | 43–63dB | Closest test position; the upper end is high enough to make careful placement and volume selection important. |
| 100cm | 38–58dB | Typical cot-distance reference in the test; readings varied by track and setting. |
| 200cm | 35–55dB | Farther-room reference; the cry sensor still detected crying beyond two metres in the same review. |
These are the reviewer’s measured ranges, not a manufacturer limit or a universal safe level. Keep the sheep outside the infant’s immediate sleep area using the Velcro tail, avoid placing the pod beside the baby’s head, and begin at the lowest comfortable setting. Recheck the position if the sound seems prominent at close range.

How do you set up Ewan Deluxe?
The exact button sequence can vary by revision, so use the control labels and instructions supplied with your unit. A safe first-use routine is:
- Charge the rechargeable control pod according to the supplied instructions before the first night.
- Inspect the pod, plush, stitching, Velcro and any attachment points. The instructions specifically tell users to inspect all parts before use.
- Remove the pod from the sheep and keep it out while you attach the empty plush to a cot rail, pushchair or car-seat bar.
- Reinsert the pod, select one of the ten tracks, and choose the red light on or off.
- Choose 20, 40 or 80 minutes if you want smartCRY to be able to restart playback after the timeout. Use continuous playback only when you want the sound to continue until manually switched off.
- Place the attached sheep so the sound is audible but the plush and pod remain outside the infant’s immediate sleep space.
- Test the chosen timer and cry response while you are present before relying on it overnight.
The product is a soother, not a monitor. Stay within whatever supervision and safe-sleep arrangements you normally use; the sensor does not report a child’s condition or replace an adult’s attention.
Can you wash the Ewan sheep?
Yes, the plush housing is machine-washable at 30°C on a delicate cycle, according to the review. Remove the control pod first. The electronics should not go into the washing machine, and the washable claim applies to the plush housing rather than the complete assembled toy.
Cleaning routine
- Switch the unit off and remove the control pod before loosening the plush from its attachment.
- Wash the plush at 30°C on a delicate cycle as specified.
- Check the housing and seams after washing and allow it to dry fully before reinstalling the pod.
- Inspect the Velcro and fabric each time; stop using the toy if a part is damaged or loose.
Because the pod is removable, you can clean the cover without exposing the battery and electronics to water. Do not assume that a washed plush makes the complete product waterproof.

Is Ewan Deluxe safe for a cot, pushchair or car seat?
The Velcro tail is designed to attach the sheep to a cot rail, pushchair or car seat so it stays outside the infant’s immediate sleep area. Boots states that the product complies with EN 71 safety standards. The instruction record also identifies the lithium-ion battery and requires an inspection of all parts before use.
Attachment is only secure while the rail or bar and the Velcro are in good condition. Check that the sheep cannot fall into the sleeping area, that no strap or fabric can form a loop around a child, and that the pod is properly seated in the plush. Replace or retire the unit if the housing, fastener or pod casing is damaged.
What is the current Ewan Deluxe battery version?
Current SweetDreamers product information describes a rechargeable pod. However, a Mothercare regional listing still describes a three-AA-battery version. That conflicts with the rechargeable specification and is best treated as an older or regional listing rather than proof that every product sold under the name is identical.
Before buying, ask the retailer to confirm the exact revision, battery type and included control pod. Check product photographs and the instruction booklet as well as the title, especially when purchasing from marketplace or regional stock. A listing that mentions three AA batteries may not be the same current rechargeable model reviewed here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow much does Ewan Deluxe cost?
Trusted Reviews recorded a £44.99 review price in 2026, and Boots also listed the product at £44.99. That is a UK price and can change with retailer promotions, region, colour and stock. The review’s value judgment was that this is expensive next to basic white-noise options, but reasonable for buyers who specifically want cry sensing, multiple tracks, a light, a portable plush format and a washable cover.
When comparing prices, include the cost and convenience of charging rather than looking only at the shelf price. Also verify that the retailer is selling the rechargeable revision, since an older AA-battery listing may look similar while having different running and ownership requirements.

Who should buy Ewan Deluxe?
It fits parents who want
- A cry-triggered restart after a timed sleep session.
- Ten heartbeat-backed pink- and white-noise choices instead of one fixed track.
- A soft red glow that can be switched off to preserve battery life.
- A plush that can attach to travel equipment and be washed separately from its electronics.
- Rechargeable operation rather than routinely replacing disposable batteries.
Consider another type of soother if you need
- The lowest possible purchase price and only basic continuous noise.
- A system that sends alerts, records sound or provides two-way communication.
- A published battery figure measured with cry sensing active; that specific test result is not available for Ewan Deluxe.
- A unit that can be immersed or washed as a complete assembly.
How does Ewan Deluxe compare with simpler white-noise options?
The useful comparison is not just sound quality. Check whether an alternative has cry sensing, how many sounds it offers, how loud it is where the baby sleeps, whether its battery is rechargeable, how it attaches and cleans, and the total price.
| Decision factor | What Ewan Deluxe provides | Question to ask about an alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Cry sensing | smartCRY can restart after a timed session; testing detected crying beyond two metres | Does it restart automatically, and in which playback modes? |
| Sound choice | Ten heartbeat-backed pink- and white-noise tracks | How many tracks are included, and is the output clear at the intended distance? |
| Loudness | 43–63dB at 30cm, 38–58dB at 100cm, 35–55dB at 200cm in one independent test | Are measurements available at the baby’s actual position? |
| Battery | 2,200mAh rechargeable lithium-ion; 21.5–34 hours in testing with cry sensing disabled | Is runtime measured with the light, sensor and normal volume enabled? |
| Attachment and cleaning | Velcro tail; removable pod; plush washable at 30°C delicate | Can the device attach securely, and can electronics be removed before washing? |
| Price reference | £44.99 in the 2026 review and Boots listing | What is the current regional price and which battery revision is supplied? |
This framework prevents a cheap speaker with one looping track from appearing equivalent to a sensor-equipped plush, while also showing when Ewan’s extra features are unnecessary for your routine.
What are Ewan Deluxe’s main strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths
- The cry sensor can restart a timed session and worked farther away than the manufacturer’s one-metre expectation in independent testing.
- Ten sound choices, heartbeat backing and a soft red light give more settling options than a single-track device.
- The rechargeable pod avoids the current model’s need for regular AA replacements.
- The plush can attach to travel equipment and the cover can be machine-washed after removing the pod.
- Independent listening found crisp, clear sound with little distortion.
Weaknesses
- The £44.99 UK price is high beside basic white-noise products.
- Measured output reached 63dB at 30cm, so placement and volume deserve attention.
- Runtime claims and tests were made with cry sensing disabled; sensor-triggered overnight endurance is not established.
- Regional listings can describe a three-AA version, creating a real risk of buying an older or different revision.
- Continuous playback does not use the cry sensor to restart anything, because the sound never times out in that mode.
What is the final verdict on SweetDreamers Ewan Deluxe?
SweetDreamers Ewan Deluxe earns its premium over a basic sound machine through the smartCRY restart, portable sheep design, ten heartbeat-backed tracks and washable cover. The independent measurements broadly support the advertised battery life and show effective long-range detection, while also exposing the need to keep close-range volume under control. Buy it when those specific conveniences solve a real bedtime problem; otherwise, a simpler and cheaper white-noise device may deliver the part you actually need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the advertised and tested battery times differ slightly?
SweetDreamers quotes 22 hours with the light and 35 hours without it, while the independent test recorded 21.5 and 34 hours. The test disabled cry sensing, and normal variation in volume, battery condition and measurement conditions can account for small differences.
How can I tell whether an online listing is the rechargeable revision?
Ask the seller to confirm a rechargeable control pod and check that the specification identifies a 2,200mAh lithium-ion battery. A listing that calls for three AA batteries may be an older or regional version, so request photos of the pod and instruction label before ordering.
Does Ewan Deluxe work as a baby monitor?
No. Its sensor can reactivate the soother after a timed session, but it does not send alerts, transmit live audio or provide two-way communication. You still need your normal supervision and monitoring arrangements.
Can I leave the control pod in while washing the sheep?
No. The pod must be removed before washing; only the plush housing is described as machine-washable at 30°C on a delicate cycle. Reinstall the electronics only after the cover is completely dry and all parts have been inspected.
