For the single JVM bug reported by the Explyt Team, Explyt’s IDE-native debugger produced stronger evidence than a text-first Superpowers workflow: it paused the failing execution and exposed the live directory, permission state, exception, and call stack. The Superpowers run developed a plausible explanation from logs and source, but never verified a runtime value before proposing a fix.
That result does not prove Explyt is universally better. The experiment used one Kotlin/Windows bug, one model, and one prompt on 4 September 2026, and its author explicitly says it is not a benchmark. The practical conclusion is narrower: when your JetBrains setup is supported and the defect depends on runtime state, direct debugger access can make the investigation faster and the patch easier to trust. Superpowers remains a useful, ordered debugging method—and it can be used together with a debugger.

The Explyt Team held the model, prompt, repository, and bug constant and changed only the debugging workflow. One run used the systematic-debugging skill from Superpowers; the other used Explyt inside a JetBrains IDE. The report, published 4 September 2026, describes the result as a single controlled comparison rather than a product benchmark.
The defect was a Kotlin/Windows failure involving java.nio.file.AccessDeniedException. A coroutine building mention suggestions reached FacadeMentionCandidates, where Files.list attempted to enumerate the protected directory C:Config.Msi. That detail matters because the correct behavior depends on distinguishing an inaccessible directory from a directory that is simply empty.

The two workflows therefore faced the same question: what is the running program actually seeing at the filesystem boundary, and what behavior should the application expose when access is denied?
How do Superpowers and Explyt compare in the reported case?
| Axis | Superpowers run | Explyt Debug run |
|---|---|---|
| Investigation channel | Logs, source, and tests | JetBrains debugger plus source and tests |
| Key evidence | Inferred from the stack trace and exception | Breakpoint-observed directory, permissions, thrown exception, and call stack |
| Token count in this case | 132k | 67k |
| First implementation | Swallowed the error as emptyList(); discarded |
Narrow filesystem-boundary fix; reviewed and deployed |
| Test signal | Fallback tests passed without a real paused execution | Runtime evidence was followed by focused regression coverage |
| Main dependency | Text and whatever tools are available | A supported JetBrains IDE, language, and run configuration |
The table captures an observation from one investigation, not a repeatable performance guarantee. The decisive difference was the evidence channel: one workflow reasoned about what probably happened, while the other observed the failing process directly.
How did the Superpowers workflow investigate the failure?
Superpowers supplied a disciplined sequence: gather facts, form a hypothesis, run an experiment, then change the code. In this run, the model searched logs and source, connected the exception to directory enumeration, and proposed catching the failure and returning emptyList().
What the text-first run got right
The explanation was plausible. A protected Windows directory can cause Files.list to throw, and a fallback can make a suggestion-building path continue. The workflow also encouraged an explicit hypothesis rather than an unstructured edit, which is valuable when the only available evidence is textual.
Why its first patch was rejected
The proposed fallback erased an important semantic distinction. An empty directory means enumeration succeeded and found no entries; an access-denied directory means the program could not establish that result. Treating both states as emptyList() can hide an environmental or permission problem.
The patch also introduced a test-only production seam. Although the fallback tests passed, they did not demonstrate what happened in the real failing execution. The patch was discarded because it made the application appear healthy by suppressing the boundary failure instead of deciding how that failure should be handled.

What Superpowers is—and is not
Superpowers is a methodology, not an alternative to runtime inspection. Its systematic-debugging skill can tell an agent to gather evidence and design an experiment; the experiment can be a debugger session when one is available. The method remains useful in environments where an IDE debugger cannot attach, and it can impose reviewable steps on any tool-assisted investigation.
What did Explyt’s debugger reveal at runtime?
The Explyt run created a reproducer, placed a line breakpoint on Files.list, and inspected the paused program. The observed state was:
dir = C:Config.MsiFiles.isDirectory(dir) = trueFiles.isReadable(dir) = falseFiles.list(dir)throwsjava.nio.file.AccessDeniedException
The call stack at the breakpoint matched the production trace through FacadeMentionCandidates and the coroutine that built mention suggestions. That alignment connected the reproducer to the real failure path instead of merely reproducing a similar exception elsewhere.
Those values changed the debugging question. The issue was not whether the path looked suspicious in a log; it was a confirmed permission boundary on a real directory, reached from the same execution path as production. That gave the agent a basis for a narrow filesystem-boundary fix and for regression tests aimed at the actual behavior.

Why is a paused runtime fact stronger than a plausible log theory?
A log records what the program chose to print. A debugger can expose state that was never logged, evaluate expressions at the failing line, and show how execution arrived there. In this case, the decisive facts—directory type, readability, thrown exception, and stack—were all available at the breakpoint.
That does not make debugger output infallible. A breakpoint can be placed on the wrong execution, a reproducer can differ from production, and a run configuration can omit the code path under investigation. Runtime evidence is strongest when the paused stack and inputs correspond to the reported failure, as they did in this case.

Text-first reasoning still has a role after inspection. The agent must decide whether access denial should be surfaced, skipped, retried, or translated into another result. The debugger establishes what happened; the code review establishes whether the proposed response preserves the product’s intended semantics.
Does Explyt actually use the IntelliJ debugger?
According to Explyt’s product and debugger documentation, its JetBrains IDE agent can set and hit breakpoints, inspect live variables, follow call stacks, step through execution, run tests, navigate code, inspect dependency sources, and apply IDE refactorings. Its debugger workflow is presented as “break, inspect, step, fix,” with variables, call stacks, breakpoints, and execution paths available to the agent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The documented workflow includes IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition as well as other supported JetBrains setups. Explyt describes Java and Kotlin support, including Spring projects, and positions the tool as an agent for coding, testing, and debugging rather than a separate command-line debugger.
Support is conditional. Debugger depth depends on the specific IDE, language, and run configuration. Before choosing it for a repository, check the current feature matrix and verify that the project can launch under a configuration Explyt can control; the one-case result does not establish support for every JetBrains product or project type.
Which uses fewer tokens: Superpowers or Explyt?
In the reported run, the Superpowers workflow used 132k tokens and the Explyt workflow used 67k. That is a difference of 65k tokens, with the debugger run using roughly half as many in this particular investigation.
These are observed counts attributed to the Explyt Team in 2026, not a benchmark average, price estimate, or prediction for your repository. Token use can change with prompt length, context-window contents, test output, repository size, tool errors, and how many experiments an agent performs. Treat the figures as a clue that direct evidence may reduce back-and-forth, not as a guaranteed cost advantage.

Was Explyt’s resulting fix better?
The reported outcome favors Explyt for this bug. The Superpowers patch that returned emptyList() was discarded because it concealed the difference between an empty directory and an inaccessible one and added a test-only production seam. The Explyt run used the paused evidence to make a narrower filesystem-boundary change, then reviewed and deployed it.
The quality signal is not simply that one patch shipped. The stronger signal is the chain from observed state to code change to focused regression coverage. A passing test that exercises only a synthetic fallback can confirm the fallback branch while leaving the original runtime behavior unexamined; a test based on the observed boundary can target the decision the application actually needs to make.
When should you choose Explyt over a systematic-debugging workflow?
Choose based on evidence access and environment fit, not on the token result alone.
| Your situation | More practical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The defect depends on live variables, timing, permissions, or an unexpected call path | Explyt, if the JetBrains setup is supported | It can place the investigation inside the running program and expose state the logs omitted. |
| The project cannot run under a supported JetBrains configuration | Superpowers’ systematic method | It works from source, logs, tests, and other available tools. |
| You need a repeatable investigation procedure across different tools | Superpowers as the process layer | Its gather–hypothesize–experiment–change sequence is not tied to one IDE. |
| You have JetBrains debugger access and want stronger discipline | Combine both | Use Superpowers to define the questions and Explyt to collect live answers. |
For a supported Kotlin or Java project, Explyt is the more direct choice when the bug report contains a runtime symptom but insufficient state. For a repository that cannot attach a debugger, the systematic method is still available and can guide experiments through tests, logging, or other tools.

A combined workflow keeps the methodological discipline while replacing speculation with an IDE experiment.
- State the failure precisely. Record the exception, the operation that failed, the expected behavior, and the execution path. In the reported case, that meant separating “directory is empty” from “directory cannot be read.”
- Form a falsifiable hypothesis. For example: the mention-building coroutine reaches a protected directory, and enumeration fails before any entries are produced. A useful hypothesis predicts what a breakpoint should show.
- Create the smallest reproducer. Run the same code path under the relevant JetBrains run configuration rather than testing an unrelated helper in isolation.
- Break at the boundary. Set a line breakpoint on the filesystem operation or the narrowest call site that receives its result. The reported investigation used
Files.list. - Inspect state before editing. Check the path, type and permission-related values, thrown exception, and call stack. Confirm that the paused stack corresponds to the production trace.
- Choose the semantic response. Decide whether access denial should propagate, be reported, be skipped, or be translated. Do not default to an empty result merely because it makes a test pass.
- Apply the smallest boundary fix. Keep the change close to the operation whose failure you observed, and avoid adding production seams that exist only to make a synthetic test convenient.
- Add focused regression coverage. Cover the behavior represented by the runtime evidence, then run the surrounding tests and inspect the final diff.
This sequence also makes a text-only investigation stronger: if no debugger is available, the experiment can be a targeted test or temporary diagnostic, but the hypothesis and expected observation remain explicit.

What are the main limitations of this comparison?
- One bug is not a benchmark. The experiment used one Kotlin/Windows failure, one model, and one prompt. It cannot establish average accuracy, speed, or token use across languages and repositories.
- Environment support matters. Explyt’s debugger capabilities depend on IDE, language, and run-configuration support. A tool that cannot launch or attach to your project cannot reproduce the advantage shown here.
- Token counts are context-sensitive. The reported counts describe these two runs, not a fixed cost for every equivalent task.
- Debugger access does not decide product semantics. Seeing that access is denied does not by itself determine whether the application should fail, warn, retry, or omit the item.
- Method and tool are not mutually exclusive. Superpowers can be paired with a debugger, so the fairest comparison is often a text-only workflow versus a disciplined workflow that also has runtime inspection—not “method” versus “debugger” as incompatible choices.
What should you verify before adopting either workflow?
- Can the project reproduce the reported failure under the same operating system and relevant run configuration?
- Can the agent stop on the failing operation and inspect the values that determine the outcome?
- Does the proposed patch preserve meaningful distinctions, such as an empty result versus an inaccessible resource?
- Do regression tests exercise the boundary behavior rather than only a convenient fallback?
- Is the final diff narrow enough for a reviewer to connect it to the observed evidence?
- If debugger support is unavailable, does the systematic process still produce a concrete experiment instead of another untested theory?
Those checks are more transferable than the token figures. They tell you whether a workflow can turn a report into evidence, a justified change, and a regression test in your own environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who created Superpowers?
The comparison identifies Superpowers as a collection created by Jesse Vincent and the Prime Radiant team, with Matt Pocock helping popularize it. Its systematic-debugging skill is the part relevant to this JVM investigation.
Can the systematic-debugging skill work without an AI-native IDE?
Yes. Its core sequence is to gather facts, form a hypothesis, run an experiment, and then change code, so the available experiment can be logs, tests, a command-line tool, or a debugger. IDE integration changes how much runtime state the agent can inspect; it does not define the method itself.
Why does matching the production call stack matter?
A reproducer can throw the same exception through a different path and lead to the wrong fix. Matching the stack ties the inspected values to the failure that users actually experienced, making the resulting regression test more meaningful.
Does a debugger session eliminate the need for regression tests?
No. A paused session establishes what happened in one execution. Regression coverage is still needed to preserve the chosen behavior after the debugger is detached and the code changes.
