Yes—if your lawn is no larger than about 1,000 square metres (0.25 acre) and you are willing to manage maps and zones in an app. The Sunseeker S4 combines boundary-free 3D LiDAR with Vision AI, so it can build a map without perimeter wire or a fixed antenna. In testing, setup was straightforward, obstacle avoidance worked, and changing the mowing direction eliminated missed strips. However, the mower still left an uncut perimeter, returned to charge during longer sessions and struggled when the first cut involved long grass. Its 0.25-acre rating is a ceiling, not a promise that every quarter-acre property will finish in one charge. For a compact, irregular yard, the S4 can remove much of the routine mowing; for a larger, steep, waterlogged or rarely maintained lawn, its premium is harder to justify.
What is the Sunseeker S4, and who is it for?
The S4 is a wireless robotic mower designed around small, complicated lawns. Instead of burying boundary cable, you place its charging dock, use the mobile app to create a map, and let the mower navigate with a 3D LiDAR-SLAM and VSLAM system combined with Vision AI. You can define multiple zones, schedules and no-go areas, which is useful when a property has separate front and back lawns, narrow passages, beds or play equipment.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSunseeker positions the S4 for tighter, obstacle-filled yards where intelligent mapping matters more than maximum acreage. Its rated mowing area is 1,000 m² (0.25 acre). That figure comes from the manufacturer and depends on grass growth, layout, weather, mowing frequency and the amount of time the mower spends charging. It should be treated as the upper limit for a suitable maintenance schedule, not as a guarantee that a quarter-acre lawn will be completed in one outing.
The S4 is a sensible candidate when you have a small but irregular lawn, dislike installing perimeter wire and are comfortable correcting a digital map. It is a poor match for properties beyond the coverage rating, owners who do not want app-based setup, or grass that is routinely allowed to become overgrown before mowing.

How does the S4 navigate without boundary wire?
The mower uses a roof-mounted sensing system rather than a physical perimeter cable. Sunseeker’s US product information claims more than 210,000 point clouds per second, a 360° by 70° sensing view and detection out to 50 metres. Those are vendor specifications, not independent performance measurements.
3D LiDAR mapping
LiDAR measures surrounding surfaces and turns them into a three-dimensional map. The S4’s LiDAR-SLAM system is intended to locate the mower while it builds that map, allowing it to return to the dock and resume work without relying on a buried guide wire. Vision-based mapping (VSLAM) and the mower’s cameras add visual information for recognizing objects and lawn boundaries.

After mapping, the app lets you split the property into separate mowing zones, set schedules and mark places the mower should avoid. This matters more than the headline “wire-free” feature: a complex yard may need a careful virtual boundary around a pond, a children’s play area, a loose gravel strip or a section that the mower cannot reach through a narrow opening.
Because the map is software, it is editable. That is convenient compared with digging up and repositioning cable, but it also means the owner has to inspect the map and correct errors. In Tom’s Guide’s month-long test, automatic mapping was easy to start, yet some sections of two yards required additional manual guidance.
What are the Sunseeker S4’s specifications?
The following figures come from the S4’s EU manual, which identifies the wireless model as RMR1001M20V. Regional versions can differ, so confirm the specification for your country before ordering.
| Specification | Sunseeker S4 figure | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum mowing area | 1,000 m² / 0.25 acre | Manufacturer coverage rating; actual suitability varies with layout, grass growth and schedule. |
| Cutting width | 180 mm | A relatively narrow path, useful for maneuvering around obstacles but requiring overlapping passes. |
| Cutting-height adjustment | 20–60 mm, manual | You set the height on the mower rather than selecting it electronically in the app. |
| Battery | 4 Ah | The manual lists capacity, not a universal mowing-time figure. |
| Maximum slope | 42% / 22° | A rated limit under specified conditions; traction, wet grass and surface changes can reduce real-world capability. |
| Sound power | 60 dB(A) | Published acoustic output from the manual, not a guarantee of the sound level at your property boundary. |
| Weight | 11 kg | Relevant when lifting the mower for cleaning, storage or recovery. |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Used for setup and app control; optional GPS/4G hardware is listed for the platform. |
| Sensors and systems | 3D LiDAR-SLAM, VSLAM, rain, lift and tilt sensors | Provide mapping, navigation and safety responses; they do not make standing water safe. |
How do you set up the S4?
Initial installation is simpler than laying boundary cable, but it is not completely hands-off. Plan to spend time choosing the dock position and checking the map before starting a full schedule.

- Choose the dock location. Place the charging station beside a weather-protected electrical outlet with enough open approach space for the mower to enter and leave reliably. Keep the area clear of places that collect water.
- Power the station and charge the mower. Follow the manual’s electrical and weather-protection instructions, then allow the mower to reach a usable charge before mapping.
- Install the app and pair the mower. Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi during the connection process. The app is the control center for mapping, schedules, zone settings and no-go boundaries.
- Start automatic mapping or guide the mower manually. Automatic mapping is the quickest starting point. If the mower misses a strip, cannot recognize a narrow passage or draws a boundary in the wrong place, use the app’s manual mapping controls to correct it.
- Review every boundary. Walk the digital map against the real lawn. Exclude beds, ponds, gravel, steps and other hazards before enabling a routine schedule.
- Create zones and a mowing pattern. Separate disconnected areas into zones and choose a cutting direction that encourages complete coverage. The default direction may not be optimal for every shape.
- Run a supervised test cycle. Watch the first passes, especially near drop-offs, gates and tight obstacles. Stop the mower and edit the map if it approaches an area that should be excluded.
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer described this process as straightforward and smoother than his previous experience with another robotic mower, while noting that some map areas still needed manual correction. That combination—easy first setup but a need for inspection—is a realistic expectation.
How well does the S4 cut grass?
Independent testing indicates that the S4 can produce an even maintenance cut after its settings are tuned, but the result depends heavily on mowing direction and lawn condition.
Coverage and missed strips
In a month-long Tom’s Guide test, the reviewer initially saw narrow rows of grass left between passes when the mower used its default cutting direction. Switching to a direction-changing setting resolved those strips on his lawn. This is an important setup detail: a map can be accurate while the selected pattern still produces visible gaps on a particular geometry.
Long grass and the first cut
The same test found that an initial cut of longer grass required approximately 90-minute mowing sessions and several trips back to the charger. Once the lawn was under regular maintenance, the backyard took just under two hours of mowing, with a charging stop adding time. Those are observations from one test property, not a rated runtime or a promise for every 1,000 m² lawn.
The manufacturer’s own guidance says the S4 is not intended for overgrown first-cut conditions. If the grass is tall, bring it down manually to a manageable height before asking the robot to establish its regular schedule. A robotic mower performs most predictably when it removes small amounts frequently rather than tackling a neglected lawn in one operation.
Edge performance
The blades sit several inches inside the mower’s outer body. Tom’s Guide therefore observed an uncut border around lawn edges. You should expect occasional string-trimmer or hand-shears work along walls, raised edging and fences; “wire-free” describes navigation, not edge-to-edge blade reach.

How does it handle obstacles, slopes and weather?
Obstacle avoidance
The tester reported that the S4 avoided a dog and small yard objects. That supports the usefulness of the LiDAR and vision system in ordinary conditions, but no sensor can identify every hazard or guarantee a safe interaction with people, pets or newly placed objects. Remove toys, hoses and loose items before a scheduled run, and supervise the first cycles in an unfamiliar area.
Slopes and traction
The manual rates the mower for slopes up to 42% (22°). The rating does not mean every surface at that angle is equally usable: wet grass, loose soil, roots and transitions between paving and turf can reduce traction. Sunseeker’s model guide identifies the S4 as non-AWD, so it is less suited to properties where sustained traction on steep or rough terrain is the primary requirement.
Rain and standing water
The S4 includes a rain sensor and is marketed with an IPX6 water-resistance rating. However, the Tom’s Guide reviewer reported that the mower stopped after a storm left standing water in the yard and resumed operation only after drying. IPX6 should not be interpreted as permission to operate in puddles, flooded sections or submerged conditions. Keep the dock and mowing area well drained, and follow the manual’s instructions for wet-weather operation.
How much charging does the S4 need?
The S4’s 4 Ah battery and 0.25-acre rating are not equivalent to a guaranteed one-charge mowing time. In the independent test, long grass caused roughly 90-minute work periods followed by repeated charging returns. Even after the lawn was maintained, a backyard job lasting just under two hours included a charging stop.
That behavior is normal for a small robotic mower: it can divide a job into sessions and resume automatically, but the calendar time grows when grass is tall, the map is complicated or the mower must travel between separated zones. Schedule runs early enough that a missed session does not leave the lawn overgrown, and do not judge the S4 solely by whether it finishes an entire quarter-acre in one battery cycle.
What can you control in the app?
The app provides the practical controls that make a wire-free mower usable: automatic or guided mapping, multiple lawn zones, no-go areas, schedules and selectable mowing patterns. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are listed in the manual; optional GPS/4G accessories are part of the wider product platform rather than a feature you should assume is included in every regional package.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
App dependence is both a strength and a trade-off. You can redraw a boundary without moving cable, but you must be willing to inspect maps, adjust zones and change the cutting direction when a particular lawn leaves strips. If you want a mower that can be installed once and operated with minimal digital management, the S4 is a less comfortable fit.
Is the S4 suitable for your lawn?
Choose the S4 when most of these statements are true
- Your maintainable grass area is comfortably below the 1,000 m² / 0.25-acre rating.
- The property has separate sections, trees, beds or other obstacles that benefit from software-defined zones.
- You want to avoid burying perimeter wire or installing a dedicated positioning antenna.
- You can provide a weather-protected dock location near power.
- You are prepared to map the yard, check boundaries and tune the mowing pattern in the app.
- The lawn is normally maintained, rather than left to become long and dense between cuts.
Look for another approach when any of these conditions dominate
- The lawn exceeds the rated quarter-acre coverage or has several distant sections that consume substantial travel time.
- You need strong all-wheel-drive traction for steep, rough or persistently wet ground.
- You expect a perfect cut right up to walls and fences without follow-up trimming.
- Standing water, poor drainage or flood-prone areas are unavoidable.
- You do not want to use an app for mapping, zone management and schedule changes.
- The mower’s first task would be reclaiming heavily overgrown grass.
How much does the Sunseeker S4 cost?
Prices vary by seller, country, stock and promotion. On October 25, 2026, Sunseeker’s direct shop displayed a sale price of $1,279.99 against a $1,799.99 reference price. Tom’s Guide’s review page showed a separate Amazon offer of $984 when it was published on July 2, 2026. Neither figure should be treated as a current universal price; check the live listing, seller, shipping, warranty and included accessories before buying.
Budget for the ownership items that may not be in the base box. Sunseeker’s product navigation lists a 4G module, replacement blade set, charging-station extension cable, cleaning kits, an S4 garage and rough-terrain wheels. The manual’s accessory inventory includes six spare blades and screws. Confirm the exact part number, regional package and S4 compatibility before ordering, because accessory availability can differ by market.
What maintenance does the S4 require?
Routine care is mostly physical inspection and cleaning rather than engine servicing. Keep the underside and blade area free of compacted clippings, check that the blades and screws remain secure, and inspect the wheels and sensors after mowing. Use the cleaning method specified by the manual; do not expose the electronics to a hose stream or leave the mower sitting in water.
Replace blades when they are damaged or no longer provide a clean cut, using a part confirmed for the RMR1001M20V model and your region. Store the mower and charging equipment according to the manual during prolonged bad weather or seasonal inactivity. A clean sensor window and unobstructed LiDAR and camera area are especially important because navigation depends on those systems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the S4’s main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Limitations and trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Boundary-free mapping with 3D LiDAR and Vision AI | Map creation and corrections require app involvement |
| Multiple zones, no-go areas and mowing schedules | Coverage is capped at a manufacturer-rated 1,000 m² / 0.25 acre |
| Obstacle avoidance worked around a dog and small objects in testing | Real-world obstacle detection cannot replace supervision and yard preparation |
| Direction-changing mode corrected missed strips in the test lawn | Default direction initially left narrow rows between passes |
| Quietness specification of 60 dB(A) sound power | Blades sit inward, so edge trimming remains necessary |
| Manual height range of 20–60 mm and a 180 mm cutting width | Not AWD, limiting its appeal for demanding slopes and rough terrain |
| Automatic return to charge and resume behavior | Long grass and larger jobs can require repeated charging sessions |
How should you compare the S4 with other robotic mowers?
Do not compare only advertised autonomy or a boundary-wire-free label. Use the criteria that determine whether a mower will actually finish your lawn:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Maximum lawn area: match the rated area to your grass-only measurement, leaving headroom for awkward passages and growth.
- Slope and drive system: compare the published slope limit with your steepest section and ask whether two-wheel drive is sufficient.
- Navigation method: LiDAR and vision avoid buried wire, while RTK or perimeter-wire systems involve different installation and line-of-sight trade-offs.
- Mapping workload: determine whether maps are automatic, how easily they can be edited and whether separate zones are supported.
- Edge cutting: check blade offset and plan for manual trimming if the mower cannot reach a wall or fence.
- Charging behavior: look for independent observations of session length, charging returns and resume reliability rather than relying on battery capacity alone.
- Weather handling: distinguish an ingress-protection rating from permission to operate in standing water.
- Total cost: include the dock, cable extensions, replacement blades, garage, connectivity modules and any terrain accessories.
Sunseeker’s own model guide places the S4 below larger, steeper-capacity models in its lineup and identifies its non-AWD design. Those are useful positioning claims, but they are not independent validation; your lawn’s geometry and maintenance habits matter more than the product hierarchy.
What did the independent review conclude?
After a month of use, Tom’s Guide reviewer Alex Wawro wrote: “Battery life is good enough for its 0.25-acre limit, and after fine-tuning the settings you’ll get a clean cut every time.” Read that as a test-yard verdict, not a universal promise. The same review documented manual map corrections, repeated charging during the long-grass first cut, an edge strip left uncut and a temporary shutdown after standing water.

Those findings define the S4’s real proposition. It is not a zero-maintenance appliance that erases every boundary and finishes any lawn in one run. It is a sophisticated small-yard mower whose LiDAR and vision mapping can save installation work, provided you accept digital setup, periodic trimming and charging pauses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Sunseeker S4 mow two separate lawns on one property?
Yes, the S4 supports multiple zones and separate mapped areas in its app. The practical limit is travel and access: if the sections are disconnected or linked by a very narrow route, you may need to guide the mower between them or treat them as separate operating areas.
What should I do before the S4’s first scheduled cut?
Mow down tall grass with a conventional mower, remove toys and hoses, and mark or block hazards that should become no-go areas. Then supervise a complete mapping run so you can correct boundaries before unattended schedules begin.
Does the S4 include GPS or cellular tracking?
The EU manual lists optional GPS/4G capability, while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are standard connectivity entries. Package contents and cellular availability vary by region, so verify the exact bundle rather than assuming a GPS or 4G module is installed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How often will I need to trim the lawn edges by hand?
The mower’s blades sit several inches inward from its body, so an uncut strip is expected along walls, fences and raised edging. The frequency depends on grass growth and your visual standard; plan a periodic pass with a trimmer even when the central lawn is maintained automatically.
