The Sunbeam Maestro Dark TA6440DS is a feature-rich four-slice toaster, but it is a cautious buy today: the model is marked discontinued, retailer listings indicate it may no longer be available, and public owner feedback is too sparse and conflicting to establish how reliably it toasts. Its strongest reasons to consider it are the LCD countdown, QuickCheck progress display and specialty modes for crumpets and frozen bread. Choose it only if you can confirm a working unit, a usable warranty and a return option before paying.
What is the Sunbeam Maestro TA6440DS?
The TA6440DS is an Australian-market toaster with four slice positions arranged across two slots and a dark stainless-steel finish. Its standout feature is a comparatively elaborate control panel: it combines six electronic browning levels with an LCD countdown timer, a progress-check function and dedicated settings for frozen bread, reheating and crumpets.

It is a household appliance, not a commercial toaster. Appliances Online lists its rated power as 1,800 W, and its listed dimensions are approximately 247 x 244 x 479 mm. CHOICE reports a different set of dimensions, 42 x 21 x 20 cm. Because the sources present different measurements and may use different measurement conventions or orientations, treat them as source-specific rather than combining them into one definitive footprint.
| Specification | What is listed |
|---|---|
| Capacity | Four slices across two slots |
| Finish | Dark stainless steel |
| Rated power | 1,800 W, listed by Appliances Online and Appliance Giant |
| Dimensions | 247 x 244 x 479 mm at Appliances Online; 42 x 21 x 20 cm at CHOICE |
| Weight | Approximately 3.18 kg |
| Warranty | One year; Australian listings generally describe replacement coverage |
These are listed specifications, not independent measurements. In particular, a four-slice capacity does not establish that the slots will fit every thick or unusually shaped loaf; the available specifications do not state a slot width.

How the size, layout and power affect daily use
A four-slice toaster is useful when two people want breakfast at the same time or when you want to toast a sandwich and bread simultaneously. The TA6440DS does this through two long slots rather than four completely separate controls. That arrangement can save some counter space compared with two individual two-slice toasters, but the cited dimensions still describe a substantial appliance. Measure the intended bench area in all directions, including room to lift the carriage and to reach the controls.
The 1,800 W rating is the maximum electrical input listed for the appliance, not a promise that every cycle consumes that amount for the entire countdown. A cycle that ends early uses less time at full heat than one that runs to the end, and the actual energy for one batch will vary with the selected level, bread moisture and mode. No measured watt-hours-per-cycle figure is published in the available specifications, so do not use the rating as an operating-cost estimate.

Keep the unit on a level, heat-resistant surface with clearance around the slots. The built-in cord storage can help keep excess cable off the bench when the toaster is positioned near an outlet.
What features does it have, and how do the settings work?
The Maestro’s value proposition is control and convenience rather than a documented advantage in toast quality. Its settings let you select a browning level and choose a cycle suited to the food, while the LCD and QuickCheck make it easier to see what is happening during a cycle.
Browning levels and countdown
The electronic browning control offers six settings, numbered 1 through 6. An LCD countdown timer shows the remaining cycle time. The number you choose is a starting point, not a guarantee of identical color for every loaf: the manual notes that bread type and moisture affect toasting time. Fresh, moist bread can behave differently from dry bread, and the same loaf may toast differently as it ages. For that reason, record the setting that works for your usual bread instead of assuming setting 4, for example, has a universal meaning.
The manual advises using a lower setting when toasting a single slice. That guidance matters because one slice receives heat differently from a full four-slice load. If you normally toast two slices, keep both slots balanced when practical and make small adjustments rather than jumping from a low setting to the maximum.
QuickCheck and cancel
QuickCheck lets you raise the carriage briefly to inspect progress without interrupting the toasting cycle. The cancel control stops a cycle when you want to end it early. QuickCheck is useful if you are still learning how a particular bread responds, or if the countdown suggests the result may be darker than you want, but it is not an automatic sensor that measures browning or corrects uneven results. Opening the carriage to inspect is a manual decision, so it does not remove the need to watch for burning.

Frozen, reheat and crumpet modes
- Frozen/defrost: Intended for bread toasted straight from the freezer. It is the appropriate dedicated mode when you do not thaw the bread first.
- Reheat: Runs for 30 seconds, according to the manual. This is a short warming cycle, not a replacement for a full browning cycle.
- Crumpet: Applies extra heat to the centre elements so the top of a crumpet can cook without burning its bottom.
These modes are intended to adapt the heating pattern or cycle to a particular use. They do not establish that every item will emerge evenly browned; the public performance evidence does not provide controlled results for any of these modes. If a crumpet or frozen slice is unusually thick, stay nearby for the first cycle and use QuickCheck or cancel rather than relying on the mode name alone.
High lift, self-centring slots and crumb tray
The high-lift function raises smaller items for easier removal. That is helpful for short slices that would otherwise sit below the top of the slot, but lift the food carefully because surfaces and crumbs may still be hot. The slots are designed to self-centre bread, and the removable crumb tray collects loose crumbs. Empty the tray regularly over a bin, and replace it before operating the toaster; loose crumbs can accumulate around the heating area if maintenance is neglected. Cord storage is built into the base.
The manual says, “Whether you are toasting thick or thin slices, your bread will always be held in the centre of the slot to ensure even toasting.” That is the manufacturer’s design claim, not independent evidence that the toaster produces even toast in practice. Self-centring also does not tell you the maximum slice width. The published specifications do not provide a slot-width measurement, so check a physical unit or the seller’s documentation if you routinely buy dense artisan loaves.
Does the TA6440DS toast evenly?
The public evidence does not establish whether this model toasts evenly or consistently across typical household use. CHOICE lists the toaster, but its detailed expert rating and performance, evenness, consistency, ease-of-use and safety scores are member-only on the public page. No public numerical score should be inferred from the listing.
Owner reports that are publicly visible point in different directions. A verified ProductReview reviewer described repeated uneven toasting, said toast burned at setting 2 of 6 and crumpets became inedible, and reported receiving two replacements within two weeks before returning the unit. By contrast, Andoo displays one review rated 4 out of 5; that reviewer praised the digital display and said the toaster met their needs.
Those accounts are anecdotes, not controlled tests or a representative sample. They demonstrate that at least one owner had a serious problem and that another was satisfied, but they cannot establish the frequency of defects or predict the performance of a particular unit. A complaint involving two replacement units is worth taking seriously, yet it still does not prove every TA6440DS behaves that way. If evenness and repeatability are your main priorities, look for independent test results for the exact model and consider whether you can return it if your results are poor.
What should you expect when using it?
Start with the settings conservatively and judge the result on your bread, rather than treating the numbers as universal timings. The manufacturer’s guidance also gives two practical cautions: use a lower setting for a single slice, and remember that bread type and moisture change how long toasting takes. Keep the first few cycles attended, especially when changing from ordinary sliced bread to frozen bread or crumpets.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Position the toaster safely. Set it on a stable, heat-resistant counter with enough clearance to operate the carriage. Keep the cord routed so it cannot snag the toaster.
- Load the bread into the slots. The self-centring mechanism is designed to hold slices near the middle. Do not force in a piece that does not fit comfortably, and do not assume the four-slice capacity means four unusually wide slices will fit.
- Select a browning level from 1 to 6. If you are unfamiliar with the bread or toaster, begin conservatively and adjust after checking the result. Use a lower level for one slice as the manual advises.
- Choose a specialty mode if appropriate. Use frozen/defrost for bread straight from the freezer, reheat for the manual’s 30-second cycle, or crumpet mode for crumpets.
- Check progress if needed. Use QuickCheck to inspect a slice without cancelling the cycle; use cancel if you want to stop the cycle early.
- Remove smaller items carefully. High lift is intended to make them easier to reach. Keep hands and utensils clear of the heating elements, and remember that the food may be hot even if the outside of the toaster feels cool.
- Clear crumbs after cooling. Once the toaster is unplugged and cool, remove and empty the crumb tray. Do not shake the appliance over a sink or use a metal tool inside the slots.
If food becomes stuck, do not try to free it with a knife or another metal object. The manual specifically warns against this. Stop the toaster, disconnect power and follow the manufacturer’s safe-use instructions rather than reaching into a live appliance. Never treat QuickCheck or high lift as a reason to insert fingers or utensils into the slots.
Is the Sunbeam Maestro TA6440DS discontinued?
CHOICE marks the model discontinued, and retailer availability signals are consistent with a discontinued or hard-to-source product. Andoo says its listing is no longer available, while other retailer pages show out-of-stock or historical pricing. That does not prove that no remaining stock exists anywhere, but a product page should not be treated as confirmation that a new unit can still be ordered.
CHOICE lists a price of $109 in 2026; this is a listed figure, not evidence of a current offer or the price you will find from a seller today. Before buying, confirm that the seller has the exact TA6440DS in stock, that the unit is new or used as described, and that the return and warranty terms apply to that sale. A marketplace listing can remain visible after stock has gone, so ask for a current dispatch estimate rather than relying on an old price or product photograph.
What warranty does it have, and what should a buyer verify?
Australian listings from Appliances Online, Andoo and CHOICE describe a one-year warranty, generally as replacement coverage. The practical terms attached to an individual sale matter: a listing’s warranty description does not establish that every seller, used unit or remaining-stock purchase receives identical coverage. Replacement wording may also mean the seller or manufacturer chooses the remedy, so clarify the process before paying.
- Ask the seller to confirm the exact model number, TA6440DS, and whether the unit is new, refurbished or used.
- Get the warranty duration and remedy in writing, including who handles a claim and whether the warranty is valid for your purchase.
- Check the seller’s return period and conditions, especially if you need to test performance before deciding to keep it.
- Verify that the listing is for this dark-finish four-slice model rather than a similarly named toaster.
- Keep the receipt, serial information and packaging until you are satisfied that all controls, slots and heating elements work.
For a discontinued appliance, a return window can be more useful than a promise of future stock. Test both slots, all browning levels, QuickCheck, cancel, high lift and the specialty modes during the permitted period, while following the manual. If a seller cannot explain how a fault will be handled, the feature set may not justify the risk.
Who should consider this toaster?
The Maestro is most appealing to someone who specifically wants a countdown display, QuickCheck and dedicated specialty modes, and who can find a unit from a seller with clear terms. Its high lift, removable crumb tray, self-centring slots and built-in cord storage add useful everyday conveniences. The uncertainty is that the model is difficult to source and the public evidence does not resolve its real-world consistency.
It is a weaker choice if your first requirement is proven evenness, if you need dependable ongoing access to a current product and its support, or if you cannot verify a return option. It is also a poor fit for a commercial kitchen, since a retailer states that the appliance is not intended or designed for commercial use. The available public owner evidence is not sufficient to call the toaster broadly unreliable, but it is also not enough to confidently recommend it for consistent results.

What should you compare before buying a four-slice toaster?
Compare the TA6440DS with currently available alternatives on the features that affect your actual use, not just the number of buttons. In particular, seek evidence about evenness and repeatability, slot dimensions, warranty remedy and current stock.

| Independent performance evidence | Helps assess evenness, consistency, usability and safety beyond a manufacturer’s feature claims. | CHOICE lists the model, but its detailed scores are member-only on the public page. |
| Slot width and bread fit | Important for thick slices, artisan loaves and other breads that may not fit standard slots. | Slot width is not stated in the available specifications; the manual only claims centring for thick and thin slices. |

| Availability and price | Helps distinguish a live offer from an old product page. | CHOICE lists $109 in 2026 and marks the model discontinued; retailer availability signals are mixed or negative. |
When comparing a current model, check whether its claimed modes have independent test support, whether replacement parts or service information are available, and whether the seller clearly states the return period. A simpler toaster with fewer settings may be preferable if it has documented consistency and straightforward support. Conversely, someone who regularly toasts frozen bread or crumpets may value the Maestro’s dedicated controls enough to accept the sourcing risk.
Because the toaster is marked discontinued, a current model may be simpler to source and support, even if it lacks the Maestro’s particular display or specialty settings. The decision is a trade-off: the TA6440DS offers a distinctive control set, while the uncertainty around availability and public performance evidence makes seller terms and independent comparisons especially important.

Can the TA6440DS toast bagels?
The documented modes include crumpet, frozen/defrost and reheat, but the available product information does not identify a bagel setting or establish a bagel-specific heating pattern. If bagels are a regular use, confirm the manual’s instructions for that food and check slot fit before buying.
Can I put thick artisan bread in the Sunbeam Maestro?
The manual says its self-centring design holds thick and thin slices in the centre, but the listed specifications do not give a slot-width measurement. A design statement about centring is not the same as confirmation that an unusually wide slice will fit. Never force bread into a slot.

Does it have separate controls for each pair of slots?
The documented specifications confirm four slices across two slots, but the available listings do not clearly describe independent control arrangements for each slot. Ask the seller for the manual or a control-panel photograph if separate settings matter to you.
Is the TA6440DS safe to use if toast gets stuck?
The manual warns not to try to remove jammed food with a knife or other metal object. Cancel the cycle, disconnect the toaster from power and follow the appliance’s safe-use instructions. Do not reach into the slots while the toaster is connected.

How much electricity does the Sunbeam Maestro use?
Its listed rated power is 1,800 W, but that figure alone does not tell you the energy used for a specific toasting cycle. Actual consumption depends on how long the toaster runs; the available sources do not provide a measured per-cycle figure.
What are the six browning settings for?
Settings 1 through 6 provide electronic browning choices. They are not universal color standards: bread type, moisture, slice count and mode affect the result. The manual advises a lower setting for one slice, so adjust from a conservative starting point.
What does QuickCheck do?
QuickCheck lets you raise the carriage briefly to inspect progress without cancelling the cycle. It is a viewing aid, not an automatic browning sensor, and it does not correct uneven heating.
How long is the reheat cycle?
The manual specifies a 30-second reheat cycle. It is intended to warm toast rather than replace a complete browning cycle.
Can it toast bread directly from the freezer?
Yes. The toaster has a frozen/defrost mode intended for bread straight from the freezer. Watch the first cycle with a new bread type because moisture and thickness affect timing.
Is the Sunbeam Maestro TA6440DS discontinued?
CHOICE marks it discontinued, Andoo says its listing is no longer available, and other retailer pages show out-of-stock or historical pricing. Remaining stock may exist, but confirm live inventory and the exact model before ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat warranty is listed for the TA6440DS?
Australian listings from Appliances Online, Andoo and CHOICE describe a one-year warranty, generally as replacement coverage. Confirm in writing that the warranty applies to the unit, seller and condition you are buying.
What price should I expect?
CHOICE lists $109 in 2026, but that is a reference listing rather than a guaranteed current offer. Because the model is discontinued or hard to source, compare the seller’s live price, shipping, condition, return period and warranty instead of relying on an old product page.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The TA6440DS is attractive for its six browning levels, LCD countdown, QuickCheck and crumpet, frozen and reheat modes. However, it is marked discontinued, slot width is undocumented, and public owner reports conflict while independent performance scores remain unavailable publicly. Buy only from a seller that can confirm exact stock, a one-year warranty or clearly stated remedy, and a practical return period.
