The Sunbeam Café Series KE9650 is a 1.7 L stainless-steel variable-temperature kettle with five selectable temperatures, a separate 40°C function, a 20-minute Keep Warm setting and a Sterilise cycle that holds a rolling boil for five minutes. Those controls make it more versatile than a basic on/off kettle, especially when you regularly prepare drinks at different temperatures. The evidence is less complete on speed, noise, energy use and long-term durability: CHOICE publishes the model’s specifications but keeps its measured results and expert rating behind membership, while owner leakage reports are anecdotal. Availability also needs checking because one retailer marks the model unavailable and another site labels it discontinued.

What is the Sunbeam Café Series KE9650?
The KE9650 is a countertop kettle designed for people who want control over water temperature rather than a single boiling cycle. Its 1.7 L stainless-steel body sits on a cordless 360-degree power base, and the heating element is concealed beneath the floor of the jug. An LCD display is built into the base, and a removable mesh filter is provided at the spout.

The temperature system is the defining feature. Instead of switching off only after reaching boiling point, the kettle lets you select several lower targets, hold that temperature briefly, or run a dedicated high-heat cycle. That is useful when a recipe, drink or other kitchen task calls for water below boiling. It does not turn the kettle into a laboratory-grade temperature controller: the guide lists fixed selections rather than a continuously adjustable set point, and the reviewed public material does not provide an accuracy tolerance.
The large capacity suits a household or a small office, but a full 1.7 L load is more water than one mug requires. The 2350 W rating identifies the electrical input of the concealed element; it is not, by itself, a published boil-time result.

What temperature settings does the KE9650 have?
The guide documents five selectable targets—80°C, 85°C, 90°C, 95°C and 100°C—plus a separate 40°C button. You choose from those preset points rather than entering any value on a numeric dial.
80°C to 95°C presets
Lower settings let you avoid bringing every batch to a full boil. In practical kitchen use, that can suit drinks or recipes that call for hot rather than boiling water, but the guide does not assign particular beverages to each temperature and does not promise a specific accuracy band. Treat the displayed value as the kettle’s selected target, not as a certified measurement of the water at every point in the jug.

100°C selection
The 100°C setting is the normal boiling target. Automatic shutoff is part of the documented safety system, so the kettle is designed to stop heating after the boil condition is reached. The public material does not give a measured time to reach that point.
Separate 40°C function
The 40°C control is distinct from the five selections listed above. It provides a lower-temperature option when you want warm water, but the guide does not describe it as a precision warming or medical function. Do not infer that the kettle can hold any temperature between 40°C and 80°C unless the control panel or a current manual for your unit explicitly says so.
How does Keep Warm work?
Keep Warm maintains the temperature you selected for up to 20 minutes. Sunbeam’s guide describes it as a convenience feature, not as an indefinite holding mode: after that period, the kettle will not keep reheating water forever.
The practical benefit is fewer reheating cycles when several people are making drinks in succession. Select the desired temperature first, activate Keep Warm according to the controls on the base, and use the water during the stated window. Because the guide gives a maximum duration rather than a guaranteed constant reading, expect the water to cycle around the target as the kettle controls heat. The public documentation does not specify the temperature spread, restart threshold or electricity consumed during holding.

Keep Warm should not be confused with Sterilise. The former maintains a chosen temperature for a limited period; the latter is a high-heat program with its own five-minute rolling-boil stage and cooldown alert.
What does Sterilise mode do?
Sterilise mode is a defined kettle cycle: it heats the water to 100°C, maintains a rolling boil for five minutes, then alerts you when the water has cooled to 70°C. Those stages are the complete behaviour described in the Sunbeam guide.
The cycle can be useful when you specifically want a prolonged boil and a signal that the water has cooled to the stated alert point. However, the name should not be expanded into a medical, food-safety or infant-formula guarantee. The guide does not claim that the program sterilises bottles, equipment or formula, nor does it replace local public-health instructions. Use it only for the water-heating task the appliance documents, and follow the preparation guidance supplied with any food, drink or healthcare product.
Because the cycle holds a rolling boil for five minutes, it will use more energy and take longer than a normal boil. No measured energy figure or total cycle time is publicly provided in the reviewed material.

Exact button labels and sequence can vary by control-panel revision, so keep the 2021 Sunbeam guide with the appliance. The operating pattern below follows the documented features without assuming an undocumented menu layout.
- Set up the base. Place the supplied 360-degree power base on a dry, stable surface near a suitable outlet. Keep the connector area free of water and do not substitute another base.
- Fill the jug. Remove the kettle from the base, add water and stay within the visible minimum and maximum marks. Never operate it empty; the guide specifically warns against running without water.
- Close and seat the lid. Make sure the lid is properly closed, then place the jug on the base so the electrical contacts engage. Avoid spilling water onto the connector.
- Choose a target. Select 80°C, 85°C, 90°C, 95°C or 100°C, or use the separate 40°C control when that is the required setting.
- Start heating. Confirm the LCD display and controls indicate the intended selection before allowing the cycle to run. The concealed element heats the water inside the jug.
- Use Keep Warm only when needed. Activate the function if you need the selected temperature maintained, remembering that its documented maximum is 20 minutes.
- Use Sterilise for the full cycle. Select the Sterilise function when you need its documented sequence: heating to 100°C, five minutes of rolling boil and a later alert at 70°C during cooling.
- Pour carefully. Steam and freshly boiled water can burn. Hold the handle, keep the spout pointed away from people and return the jug to the base only when the surrounding surface is dry.
- After use, unplug for cleaning or storage. Allow the kettle to cool, remove it from the base and follow the guide’s cleaning instructions. Do not immerse the jug, base or connector in water.
What safety protection is documented?
Sunbeam describes three automatic protections: shutoff after boiling, a boil-dry cutout and an overheating shutdown. Together, they address the most obvious abnormal conditions—reaching a boil, operating with insufficient water and excessive heat—but they do not remove the need for supervision.

- Stop using the appliance if the jug, lid, cord, base or connector is damaged.
- Keep hands and face clear of steam when opening the lid or pouring.
- Let the unit cool before cleaning and keep the base dry.
These are appliance precautions, not a statement that every hazard is eliminated. The guide’s automatic systems cannot detect every spill, damaged seal or electrical fault.
How well does the KE9650 perform?
The available public evidence confirms the hardware and operating modes but does not establish a measured performance ranking. CHOICE lists the model with a 1.7 L capacity and 2350 W input and identifies boil performance, noise, energy efficiency and ease of use among its assessment areas. Its detailed expert rating and numeric results are member-only, so there is no attributable public figure for boil time, sound level, energy consumption or temperature accuracy.
That distinction matters. A 2350 W element may indicate substantial heating power, but wattage alone cannot tell you how quickly a particular volume boils. Real results also depend on starting temperature, water volume, supply voltage, altitude, ambient conditions and the kettle’s control logic. Likewise, the presence of an LCD display and preset temperatures describes the interface, not the accuracy of the temperature shown.
There is no published figure in the reviewed material for minimum fill, pouring rate, exterior temperature, filter effectiveness or the duration of a normal cycle. Those omissions are reasons to avoid precise claims, not evidence that the kettle performs poorly.
What is known about durability and reliability?
The public record is limited. ProductReview.com.au labels the KE9650 discontinued and displays individual owner complaints that include leaking. Those posts are personal reports, not a controlled reliability study, a verified defect count or a measured failure rate. They indicate a potential issue worth checking, but they cannot establish how common leakage is or which component may be responsible.
The stainless-steel body and concealed element describe construction, not a guaranteed service life. The documented 1-year warranty is the clearest published term for after-sales coverage in the material reviewed. Before buying an older or remaining unit, ask the seller how warranty claims are handled, confirm the model number and inspect the jug, lid seal, spout and base for damage. Keep proof of purchase because warranty eligibility can depend on the seller and purchase date.

If a unit develops a leak, unusual smell, repeated overheating shutdown or a damaged connector, stop using it, unplug it when safe and contact the seller or Sunbeam service channel. Do not attempt to seal a leaking electrical appliance with household adhesive.
Is the Sunbeam KE9650 still available?
Availability is not settled by one retailer. Andoo’s KE9650 page says the product is no longer available from that retailer, while ProductReview.com.au labels the model discontinued. Neither statement proves that every seller has exhausted stock, so treat any listing as something to verify rather than assuming the kettle is broadly in production.
CHOICE displays a price of $159 for the model. That is a page listing, not a current market quote, and it should not be read as a guaranteed price for remaining stock. Prices, shipping, warranty terms and return policies can differ when an appliance is old stock or sourced through a clearance channel.
Before placing an order, confirm all of the following with the seller:
- The listing identifies KE9650, not a similar Café Series model.
- The item is physically in stock rather than available only for back-order or notification.
- The supplied base, filter, lid and documentation are included.
- The warranty is valid in your country and applies to the exact seller.
- The seller accepts returns if the model number or condition is not as advertised.
Who is the KE9650 best suited to?
The kettle makes the most sense for someone who will actually use variable temperatures or the timed high-heat cycle. Its controls can reduce the need to estimate cooling time for drinks and can provide a repeatable selection for household routines, while the 1.7 L capacity covers multiple servings.
It may suit you if:
- You regularly need water below boiling and prefer fixed selections over guesswork.
- You want a 40°C option for warm water without bringing the whole jug to a boil.
- You value a short holding period while several people prepare drinks.
- You want a dedicated five-minute rolling-boil cycle and a cooldown alert.
- You are comfortable verifying stock and warranty on a model that may be discontinued.
A basic kettle may be a better fit if:
- You only ever need boiling water and will not use the extra controls.
- You want publicly documented boil-time, noise or energy scores before buying.
- You need long-term availability of replacement parts and uncomplicated retailer support.
- You need certified temperature accuracy or a healthcare-specific sterilisation process, neither of which the public guide establishes.
What should you compare with another variable-temperature kettle?
When considering a current alternative, compare like for like rather than relying on the KE9650’s feature list alone. The most useful checks are the ones CHOICE identifies, plus ownership details that matter when a model is no longer widely stocked.

| Decision point | What to verify | Why it matters for a KE9650 buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature control | Number of presets, any low-temperature mode, and published accuracy or tolerance | The KE9650 documents five high-temperature selections and a separate 40°C function, but no public accuracy figure is supplied. |
| Capacity and filling | Usable volume, minimum fill and lid or spout design | Its nominal capacity is 1.7 L; the reviewed material does not state a minimum-fill value. |
| Boil performance | Measured time under stated test conditions | The KE9650’s public material gives 2350 W, not a measured boil time. |
| Noise | Published sound measurement or a clearly described test method | No public KE9650 noise result is available from the reviewed CHOICE page. |
| Energy use | Energy per boil and holding-cycle consumption | The five-minute Sterilise hold will run longer than a normal boil, but no numeric energy result is published. |
| Cleaning | Filter removal, access to the lid and descaling guidance | The KE9650 has a removable mesh filter; other cleaning details should be confirmed in the competing model’s manual. |
| Durability evidence | Warranty length, service support and the quality of owner-report evidence | The KE9650 has a listed 1-year warranty and anecdotal leakage complaints, not a measured defect rate. |
| Stock and returns | Confirmed inventory, model identity and return terms | One retailer marks it unavailable and another labels it discontinued, so availability is a central buying risk. |
What are the KE9650’s main strengths and limitations?
Its strongest case is control: five stated temperature targets, a separate 40°C function, a timed Keep Warm period and a distinct Sterilise program in one 1.7 L kettle. The concealed element, removable filter, LCD display and 360-degree cordless base provide the expected hardware for a modern countertop appliance, and the guide documents three automatic safety protections.
The limitations are mostly about evidence and ownership. Public information does not reveal CHOICE’s numeric performance results, so buyers cannot use that page to compare the kettle’s measured speed, noise or energy efficiency. The 1-year warranty is relatively short as a planning horizon, owner leakage reports are unresolved anecdotes rather than a reliability statistic, and stock may be difficult to find. Those factors make seller verification as important as the feature list.
Sunbeam Café Series KE9650 verdict
The KE9650 is a feature-rich variable-temperature kettle on paper, and its documented controls are specific enough to explain exactly what each mode is intended to do. Choose it when the five presets, 40°C option, 20-minute holding period or five-minute rolling-boil cycle solve a real routine for you. Do not choose it on the assumption that 2350 W guarantees a particular speed, that Sterilise is a medical assurance, or that an old listing proves current availability. Check the exact model, stock, warranty and return terms before paying, and treat leakage complaints as a reason for caution rather than as proof of a universal defect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sterilise mode sterilise baby bottles or formula?
No such assurance appears in Sunbeam’s guide. It describes a water-heating sequence only, so preparation of formula or cleaning of feeding equipment should follow the instructions from the relevant health authority or product manufacturer.
Can I choose any temperature between the listed presets?
The documented controls are fixed selections rather than a continuous dial. The guide lists 80°C, 85°C, 90°C, 95°C and 100°C, with a separate 40°C button; it does not document intermediate values or a user-entered temperature.
What should I do if my KE9650 starts leaking?
Stop heating, unplug the base when it is safe to do so and keep the kettle out of service until the seller or service provider advises you. Do not try to repair a leaking jug or electrical connector with household sealants.

How can I confirm that an online listing is really the KE9650?
Ask the seller for a photo of the model label on the kettle or base and check that it matches KE9650, not another Café Series code. Also confirm that the supplied base and warranty documents belong to that model before ordering.
