Before you change anything
First identify two things: the Microsoft account that owns the subscription and the company that billed you. A Game Pass purchase made through Microsoft normally appears at account.microsoft.com/services. A subscription purchased through Apple’s App Store or Google Play is administered by that store instead. The merchant name on your receipt or bank statement is a useful first check.
Have the current renewal date, plan name and any recent receipt available. If you are close to a billing date, act promptly and then inspect the account’s end date and transaction history. Microsoft warns that a cancellation made close to a billing date can still leave a charge, so do not rely only on the time you clicked a button.

How do I stop the next Game Pass charge?
Turn off recurring billing if you want to keep the remaining paid time. This is not an immediate termination: Microsoft says the subscription benefits continue until the expiry date shown on your account.
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account that purchased Game Pass.
- Find the Game Pass entry and select Manage.
- Select Turn off recurring billing if that option is shown.
- Read the confirmation screens and complete the prompts.
- Return to the subscription details and record the displayed Expires on date.
When the control changes to Turn on recurring billing, Microsoft’s guidance indicates that automatic renewal is already off. You can continue using included benefits until the shown date, subject to a title leaving the library earlier. Do not remove a payment card as a substitute for this step; a saved card and an active renewal setting are separate account controls.

How do I cancel Xbox Game Pass completely?
Use the same subscription-management page and choose the cancellation command instead of merely changing renewal. The exact label can be Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on the account view.

Can I pause Game Pass instead of cancelling?
Microsoft’s reviewed subscription instructions do not document a universal Pause button or a method for freezing time that has already been paid for. If your aim is simply to stop another charge, turn off recurring billing and continue using the subscription until its displayed expiry date.
That approach preserves the paid term but does not reserve the catalog indefinitely. Access to games included through the Game Pass library lasts until the subscription ends or an individual game leaves the library, whichever comes first. Check the date shown in your account rather than relying on an assumed grace period. Turning renewal back on later is a separate action and may show different plan or billing choices.
How do I change my Game Pass plan or tier?

The US Xbox page currently presents Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, Essential and PC Game Pass. Availability is not universal, and catalog size, day-one releases, cloud-gaming allowances, EA Play and other bundled benefits can change by plan, region, device and date. Compare the points below instead of assuming that a higher or lower tier changes every feature in the same way:
- Device access: whether the plan includes console, PC or both.
- Catalog and releases: which library is included and whether day-one games are part of that tier.
- Console online multiplayer: whether multiplayer access is included for the console games you play.
- Cloud gaming: whether cloud play is available and what limits apply to your account and supported devices.
- Bundled benefits: such as EA Play or other extras listed on the offer screen.
- Regional support: whether the plan and its features are offered where your Microsoft account is registered.
Do not assume that switching always produces an immediate downgrade, a specific credit, or a fixed conversion rate. Microsoft presents the applicable terms to the signed-in account; those terms control the transaction. Save the confirmation showing the new plan in case the effective date differs from what you expected.
How do I change the Game Pass billing interval?
For an eligible recurring subscription, Microsoft documents the path Services & subscriptions > Manage > Change > Switch. The available recurrence options vary by plan, region and account.

How do I change the card or payment method?
On a recurring subscription, use Manage > Change how you pay. The control may be unavailable after renewal has been turned off because the current paid term is simply scheduled to expire, and prepaid subscriptions have no recurring payment method.
- Sign in to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Select Manage for the relevant Game Pass subscription.

If Microsoft shows a past-due balance, use the Pay now action before expecting a normal renewal or plan change. Updating a card does not itself cancel a subscription. Can I get a refund after cancelling?
Cancellation and refund eligibility are separate. Xbox states that if you missed turning off renewal, you can request a refund of the most recent recurring charge when you cancel within 30 days after payment; that allowance is limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. Xbox’s page was verified in 2026 and does not display a publication year.

Submit the request through Xbox’s refund route and follow the eligibility result shown for your account. Do not assume that every cancellation qualifies, that a partial refund will be issued, or that the same rules used for another Microsoft product apply to Game Pass. Country-dependent cancellation and refund rules can also affect eligibility; your account’s terms and the Xbox response are controlling.
If the charge came from Apple’s App Store or Google Play, Microsoft directs customers to the provider that billed them for cancellation or refund help. Start by identifying the merchant on the receipt rather than assuming Microsoft can reverse a store-managed transaction. Why is there no cancel button?
The most common cause is that you are viewing the wrong Microsoft account or a subscription managed by another provider. Work through these checks in order.
- Confirm the purchaser: Sign out and sign in with the Microsoft account that actually bought Game Pass. If a child’s account made the purchase, the subscription is attached to that account, not automatically to a parent’s profile.
- Read the current status: If the page says Turn on recurring billing and shows an expiry date, renewal is already off; there may be nothing further to cancel.
- Check the billing provider: Apple and Google Play subscriptions are managed in their respective stores, including refund requests.
- Look for an overdue balance: A past-due payment can replace normal controls with a payment prompt. Resolve the balance shown by Microsoft before attempting another change.
- Check the date: Microsoft warns that cancelling close to a billing date can still leave a charge. Compare the account’s end date and transaction history.
- Use guided support: If the correct account, provider and payment status are confirmed but controls remain absent, use Microsoft’s guided subscription support rather than deleting payment details.
Removing a card alone is not a cancellation method. It can leave an account with an unpaid renewal attempt and does not change the subscription status. Browser extensions, a stale sign-in session or a family-account permission issue can also hide controls; sign in again and use the account that appears on the purchase receipt before escalating.
What happens to games when Game Pass expires?
Subscription-library access continues only until the subscription ends or a title leaves the library. The expiry date displayed in your account is the date to plan around, not the date of the last game you launched. Downloaded files may remain on the console or PC, but the subscription entitlement is what permits play.
If you are changing plans, inspect the destination plan’s catalog and device coverage before confirming. A title available on one tier, platform or region may not be included on another, and catalog membership can change over time. Any separately purchased game remains governed by its own purchase license, not by the Game Pass end date.
Prefer a prepaid term next time?
A prepaid Xbox Game Pass retail subscription card or code can replace recurring billing, but it is not a pause control, a cancellation service or a guaranteed refund. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to turn off recurring billing on the current subscription, wait until that term expires, and then redeem the prepaid code.

- Turn off recurring billing on the existing subscription.
- Wait until the account reaches its displayed expiry date.
- Check the prepaid product’s exact tier, duration and country or region before buying.
- Redeem the code after expiry and confirm the new term in the account.
Check the retailer’s return terms and make sure the item is a subscription code or card, not a general Microsoft/Xbox store-balance gift card. Store balance, download codes and subscription tokens are different products. A controller, repair item or cloud-play accessory cannot perform subscription billing management. Buy only from a seller whose region, activation rules and return policy you understand; a code for the wrong country or tier may not solve the problem.

- After stopping renewal, the page should offer Turn on recurring billing and show an expiry date.
- After cancellation, confirm the final status and end date rather than relying on a closing pop-up.
- After a plan or interval switch, verify the new plan name, recurrence, next charge and effective date.
- After changing payment, confirm the selected method and resolve any past-due amount displayed.
- After a refund request, retain the request confirmation and monitor the original payment method for the provider’s decision.
Take a screenshot or save the confirmation email when the change matters financially. If a new charge appears despite a confirmation that renewal was off, compare its timestamp with the displayed end date, then use the transaction details and the appropriate billing provider’s support channel.

Can a parent cancel Game Pass bought on a child’s account?
The subscription belongs to the Microsoft account that completed the purchase. Sign in to that purchasing account to see the management controls; if access or family-account permissions prevent that, use Microsoft’s guided support for account-specific help.
Will I lose my games immediately when I turn off recurring billing?

Do not assume they are interchangeable. Microsoft treats store balance, download codes and subscription tokens as different products. Verify that a card or code is specifically for the Game Pass tier, duration and region you need.
