To keep Steam demos off the wrong drive, open Steam > Settings > Storage, make sure the drive you want has a Steam library, and check the destination Steam offers before confirming each install. You can set a preferred library for future installs, but don’t assume every demo button presents a drive chooser or that changing the default will move demos already installed elsewhere. If a demo is already in the wrong library, Steam’s Storage page provides a Move action.
The key distinction is between the drive your computer can see and a Steam library location Steam can use. Set up the library first, then verify the demo’s final location in Storage. That avoids treating a download button, a drive’s activity light, or a remembered install choice as proof of where the demo was installed.

What should I check before installing a demo?
First, check that the drive you want is available as a Steam library. Steam’s current support instructions use Settings > Storage to manage library locations and choose another location for future installations. The drive being visible to your computer is not enough by itself: Steam needs a library path on it.
Steam Support’s article Moving a Steam Installation and Games says: “You can create an alternate location on any drive, which you can choose in the future when installing games.” In practice, that means two things need to line up: the destination must be registered as a Steam library, and the install flow must actually offer or use that destination. A drive that is mounted and has free space is not automatically a selectable Steam library.

- Open Steam > Settings > Storage. Review the listed drives and identify the current default installation drive. This is the right place to start because Steam’s support guidance for library locations points to Storage, rather than the older Downloads-based route.
- Add the intended drive if it is missing. Use the + control on the Storage page to add a Steam library location. Select the drive and complete the client’s prompts. Once added, verify that the path appears in the Storage list before relying on it for an install.
- Choose how you want to handle future installs. If most of your games and demos should go to the new library, look for the drive’s three-dot menu and a Make Default option. A 2023 Steam Community exchange describes that menu sequence; Valve’s support article confirms that alternate locations can be chosen for future installations, but does not document this exact menu label. Client controls can change, so treat the label as something to look for rather than a guaranteed control.
- Start the demo installation and inspect the destination shown by Steam. If the client offers a destination choice, select the intended library before confirming. Do not assume every Download Demo or Play Demo entry point behaves the same way.
- Check the result in Settings > Storage. If the demo appears under an unexpected drive, use the move procedure below rather than guessing from download activity alone.
Valve’s Steam Support instructions for moving a Steam installation and games explain how to create an alternate library location and select it for later installations. If Steam already lists the intended drive, you do not need to add it again just because you are installing a demo. If it is absent, make the library available before starting the install rather than hoping Steam will discover it during the process.
Should I change the default drive or choose a library each time?
Change the default if you want one library to be the usual destination for future installs. If you switch drives depending on the game, leave the default alone and check the destination whenever Steam offers a choice. This is a preference decision, not a hardware fix: neither setting a default nor choosing a destination per install requires buying a new drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a default when you want consistency across future installations. Choose per install when you want to decide based on the particular title or the space available in each library. Moving an existing demo is a separate task: a default change is not a relocation command.
| Approach | Best when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Set a default library | You want most future installs to use the same drive. | Look for Make Default in the drive’s three-dot menu. The specific label is described in a Steam Community exchange, not Valve’s support instructions. Continue checking the install destination when shown. |
| Choose a destination per installation | You alternate between libraries. | Check the offered destination before confirming. The available choice may depend on the installation flow; a universal demo-specific prompt is not established. |
| Move an installed demo | The demo is already in the wrong library. | Use the Storage page’s Move action and select the demo’s listing. This changes the location of an installed item; it is not the same as changing the default for later installs. |
If you usually install to one drive, setting it as the default may reduce repeated decisions, provided that the client exposes the option. If you regularly alternate, a default is less important than pausing to inspect the destination each time Steam presents one. In either case, verify the result after installation in Storage, because the reviewed Steam guidance does not promise identical behavior for every demo entry point.
How do I move a demo that is already on the wrong drive?
Use Steam’s built-in move workflow from Settings > Storage. Make sure the destination library exists first, then move the demo entry itself. The process is useful when the install already completed on the wrong drive; it does not require changing the default library first.

- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the drive where the demo is currently installed.
- Select the demo from the installed-items list.
- Choose Move, select the destination library, and confirm the move.
- Return to Storage and check that the demo is listed under the intended drive.
Steam documents moving installed games through Storage. A demo has its own app ID, associated with but separate from the full game, so select the demo entry rather than assuming the full game’s listing represents it. A demo may be associated with the game it previews, but that association does not make it the same installed app for the purposes of choosing the item to move.
Avoid manually cutting and pasting application files as a first-line fix; Steam’s documented workflow is the safer route to follow. If the demo does not appear in the source drive’s installed-items list, first check whether it is installed in another library or whether the list is showing the full game instead of the demo. Do not move the full game by mistake simply because its name is more familiar.
What if the drive or library is missing, or Steam cannot write to it?
Handle these as separate library problems: add or restore the library location if it is absent, and use Steam’s repair option if the library folder is not writable. Neither problem is solved by repeatedly clicking the demo’s install button.
The library disappeared after reinstalling Steam
Steam Support describes adding an existing alternate library path. Open Settings > Storage and add the existing location rather than creating a different folder by guesswork. See Steam Support’s instructions for adding a library folder. Once it appears in Storage, use that listed location as the destination where appropriate.
Steam reports that the library folder is not writable
In Settings > Storage, open the drive’s three-dot menu and choose Repair Folder. Steam lists this as a troubleshooting action for a library folder with a write problem. Resolve that issue before trying to install or move the demo into that library. The repair option addresses a folder problem; it does not itself set that drive as the destination for future installs.

Is the wrong drive actually receiving the demo?
Confirm the demo’s installed location in Storage before treating disk activity as proof of a wrong-drive install. Activity during an update can have a different explanation from the final location of a newly installed demo. These are different symptoms and should not be collapsed into one diagnosis.
One Steam Client Beta user reported in 2025 that update files appeared in a previously used library after repeatedly moving a different game. That is an individual report about updates, not a verified general explanation for demo installations. It does not establish that Steam always keeps download cache files on a particular drive. Diagnose the final install location from the demo’s listing in Storage, not from activity alone.
If you see disk activity on a drive you did not expect, check the demo’s entry in Storage and distinguish that from activity associated with an update or another installed game. If the demo itself is listed under the wrong library, move it. If it is listed under the intended library, the disk activity alone does not show that the demo was installed elsewhere.
Does adding an SSD fix the wrong-drive problem?
No: extra capacity can help only if the library you want is short of space; it does not change which installation location Steam selects. Check compatibility before adding an internal drive. Valve also cautions that external hard drives can cause connection and performance problems and advises using an internal drive when those issues arise. An SSD is an optional capacity choice, not a substitute for configuring the library in Steam.
If you are considering an internal SSD for a gaming PC, treat it as an extra place to store a library, not as a control for Steam’s install behavior. Confirm that the drive is compatible with your computer before buying it, then add its location in Storage and verify the library appears. No particular drive interface or model is required by the steps here, and no specific product is needed to fix a wrong destination.

An external drive is not automatically the right answer just because you want another place for demos. Valve warns that external hard drives can create connection and performance problems and advises using an internal drive when those problems arise. More broadly, a new drive only helps with available capacity: you still need a Steam library path and an appropriate install destination.
What does Steam’s demo behavior not guarantee?
The documented Storage controls let you manage libraries, choose an alternate location for future installations, and move installed items. They do not establish that every demo entry point will show a destination selector or always follow the chosen default. Because Steam’s client interface can change, follow the controls currently shown in Storage and verify where the demo ended up after installation.
In particular, do not take the absence of a prompt in one flow as proof that all demos skip destination selection, or assume that a default-setting change overrides every possible demo install flow. The safe procedure is to prepare the intended library, inspect whatever destination Steam offers before confirming, and check the resulting listing in Storage. The interface can change, so rely on the controls currently visible in your Steam client rather than on a fixed sequence remembered from another version.
The Steam Support guidance and related Steam Community material were checked on October 30, 2026 (UTC). The specific Make Default menu sequence comes from a 2023 community exchange, while the update-activity example is a single 2025 Steam Client Beta user report. Those observations are useful context, not a guarantee about every installation flow.

Will changing Steam’s default drive move demos I already installed?
No. The default is for future installations; changing it does not itself relocate existing files. To change an installed demo’s library, open Settings > Storage, select the drive holding the demo, select the demo entry, and use Move to choose the destination library.

Does every Download Demo or Play Demo button show a drive selector?
That is not established for every demo entry point. If Steam presents a destination choice, inspect it before confirming. If it does not, check the demo’s resulting location in Settings > Storage rather than assuming the button followed the destination you expected.
Does seeing disk activity on another drive mean the demo installed there?
Not necessarily. Update activity and the final location of a new demo are different clues, and a single 2025 user report about update files cannot establish a general rule for where Steam stores downloads. Check the demo’s installed listing in Storage.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Add the desired drive as a Steam library in Settings > Storage, choose it as the default if that option is available and it suits your usual installs, and check the destination before confirming a demo download whenever Steam offers a choice. If the demo is already on the wrong drive, move the demo’s own entry through Storage. Verify the final location there; disk activity alone is not proof of where the demo was installed.
