U.S. stocks rose Monday, October 26, 2026, as renewed enthusiasm for artificial-intelligence companies met positioning ahead of major technology earnings and a two-day Federal Reserve meeting. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.8%, the S&P 500 added 0.7% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3%. The advance was not a clean all-clear signal: oil remained above $100 a barrel, long-term Treasury yields stayed elevated and investors still had to weigh whether AI spending can produce durable cash flow. Anthropic’s IPO filing supplied the day’s headline catalyst, but its shares were not yet publicly trading.
Why did stocks go up on Monday?
The rally reflected three forces arriving at once: renewed AI optimism after Anthropic filed for a potential IPO, anticipation of earnings from Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft, and positioning before the Federal Open Market Committee meeting that begins Tuesday and ends Wednesday. E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley Managing Director Chris Larkin said AI concerns and oil prices had kept stocks “off balance,” while the week’s earnings and economic data could push the market out of its recent range.

Anthropic’s filing for a proposed ticker, ANT, gave investors a new way to think about generative-AI exposure in public markets. The filing renewed debate over whether the sector’s valuation boom can be supported by revenue and cash flow, or whether enthusiasm has moved ahead of fundamentals.
Investors positioned for several market-moving events
With three large technology companies due to report and the Fed decision approaching, traders had an unusually dense calendar to price. Chris Larkin said investors would focus especially on Microsoft and Amazon to judge the strength of the AI trade into year-end.

Oil and interest rates limited the signal from the rally
WTI crude fell 1.8% on the session but closed above $100 a barrel, and October’s gain exceeded 12%. Treasury yields were mixed rather than uniformly lower, showing that inflation and financing costs remained active concerns even as equities advanced.
How did the major markets close?
The following figures are the Monday closing levels and daily changes reported by Kiplinger in 2026.
| Market measure | Monday close or level | Daily move |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,169 | Up 0.8% |
| S&P 500 | 7,676 | Up 0.7% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 52,361 | Up 0.3% |
| WTI crude oil | $101.48 per barrel | Down 1.8%; October’s gain exceeded 12% |
| Two-year Treasury yield | 4.716% | Up 3.2 basis points |
| 10-year Treasury yield | 4.986% | Down 0.2 basis points |
| 30-year Treasury yield | 5.299% | Down 1.6 basis points |
The index pattern favored growth stocks, but the smaller Dow gain suggests the advance was more concentrated in technology and other growth-sensitive shares than in the broadest set of economically sensitive companies. That is an interpretation of the day’s moves, not a guarantee that the pattern will persist.
Is Anthropic stock available to buy yet?
No. Anthropic has filed for an IPO, but a filing is only a step toward a public listing. Shares become broadly tradable only after regulators review the registration, the company sets an offering price and the stock begins trading on an exchange under its final ticker.

Anthropic develops Claude and is being described as potentially the largest IPO in stock-market history and the first major generative-AI pure play to reach public markets. Those descriptions refer to the potential scale and significance of the offering, not a completed listing or a confirmed valuation.
What investors would need to examine
- Growth quality: Rapid sales growth matters less if it requires permanently rising subsidies or cannot translate into operating cash flow.
- Infrastructure spending: Training and running large models require substantial computing capacity, data-center commitments and energy.
- Competition: Anthropic faces established cloud and software companies with large distribution networks and their own AI models.
- Safety and regulatory risk: Model safety obligations, copyright disputes and future rules could affect costs, product availability or permitted uses.
- Valuation: Kiplinger analyst Tom Taulli said investors must weigh explosive growth against infrastructure spending, fierce competition, safety risk and a potentially lofty valuation.
What is the Fed expected to do this week?
Deutsche Bank senior U.S. economist Brett Ryan expected the Fed to leave its federal-funds target range at 3.75% to 4.00%. The decision was expected to attract attention not only for the rate itself but also for any dissents and for what officials say about inflation, financial conditions and the economic effect of recent AI-related volatility.

Ryan said, “Warsh is likely to signal that recent inflation data reinforce expectations from the September meeting that further tightening will likely be needed over time.” That comment points to a policy risk for stocks: even if rates are unchanged at this meeting, officials could push back against expectations for rapid easing.
Why the Treasury curve matters
The two-year yield, which is particularly sensitive to expected Fed policy, rose to 4.716%. The 10-year yield slipped slightly to 4.986%, while the 30-year yield fell to 5.299%. This uneven move means investors were not making one simple bet on lower rates; they were separating near-term policy expectations from longer-term inflation, borrowing and supply concerns.

Which earnings reports matter most this week?
Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft were scheduled to report results. Analysts at Stifel highlighted cloud consumption, free cash flow and capital expenditure as key evidence for deciding whether AI enthusiasm is becoming a durable business cycle.
| Company or event | What investors were watching | Timing noted in the market calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft | Azure growth, cloud demand, AI monetization and capital spending. Azure consensus growth was described as 46% to 48% year over year. | Scheduled for this earnings window |
| Amazon | Cloud capacity, free cash flow and whether demand is outrunning available infrastructure. Management reportedly said existing demand could exhaust capacity in 2026 and 2027, with 2028 demand already “striking.” | Scheduled for this earnings window |
| Alphabet | Cloud consumption, AI investment and the cash-flow return from large capital expenditures. | Scheduled for this earnings window |
| Apple | Investors were awaiting management confirmation of a November 2 report date. | Expected November 2, subject to confirmation |
| Nvidia | The market’s next major read on AI-chip demand and data-center spending. | Expected November 18 |
Meta Platforms and Tesla had already reported the prior week, so their results formed part of the backdrop rather than a fresh Monday catalyst. The immediate question for the remaining reports was whether customer demand, cloud usage and free cash flow can keep pace with the industry’s enormous capital requirements.
What could reverse the stock-market rally?
Monday’s gains do not remove the main risks facing investors this week. Four tensions are especially important:
- Growth versus rates: Strong AI and earnings expectations can lift share prices, but renewed inflation pressure could keep monetary policy restrictive for longer.
- Technology versus breadth: A rally led by a few mega-cap technology companies can look stronger in the Nasdaq than in the broader market if other sectors do not participate.
- Risk appetite versus energy costs: Oil above $100 can support energy producers while raising costs for households and businesses, potentially complicating the inflation outlook.
- Narrative versus cash flow: Positive AI announcements need to be matched by customer consumption, capacity planning, free cash flow and returns on capital spending.
Chris Larkin’s warning is useful context: the week’s lineup had the potential to push markets “one way or the other,” meaning event risk was elevated even after Monday’s advance.

What should investors watch for the rest of the week?
Focus on the interaction between the Fed’s language and the companies’ numbers rather than treating any single headline as decisive. A constructive reaction would require evidence that cloud and AI demand is supporting revenue and cash generation without provoking a sharper inflation or interest-rate response. A weaker reaction could emerge if companies raise capital-spending plans while giving cautious guidance, or if Fed officials signal that inflation requires a tighter path.
For anyone tracking the market, the most informative dashboard combines the three major indexes with WTI crude, the two-year yield and the 10-year yield. Watching those measures together helps distinguish a broad improvement in risk appetite from a narrow technology-led move occurring alongside persistent macro pressure.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an IPO filing usually take before trading begins?
There is no fixed timetable. Regulatory review, revisions to the filing, market conditions, investor demand and the company’s decision on pricing all affect when a listing occurs, and some filings never result in a completed offering.
Why can a higher two-year yield pressure technology shares?
Higher short-term yields can raise the discount rate applied to future profits, which tends to affect companies whose expected cash flows are farther in the future. They can also make cash and short-term bonds relatively more attractive compared with riskier growth stocks.

What does “cloud consumption” mean in an earnings report?
It generally refers to how much computing, storage and related services customers actually use, rather than merely the amount of capacity they have reserved. Rising consumption can provide a stronger signal of recurring demand than a one-time contract announcement.
Can oil prices above $100 affect the Fed’s decision?
Higher energy prices can feed directly into consumer inflation and indirectly into transportation and production costs. Policymakers typically assess whether such a move is temporary or broad enough to change underlying inflation expectations before adjusting their outlook.
