The STIHL RMA 239 is a 37 cm cordless push mower best suited to small or medium lawns, especially if you already own batteries in STIHL’s AK system. Independent tests found roughly 37–40 minutes of runtime, but that is a test result rather than a guarantee. Check the exact regional model and package before buying: some are sold without a battery or charger, and published weight and cutting-height figures vary by version.
Is the STIHL RMA 239 a good cordless mower?
It can be a good fit if you want a compact, battery-powered mower for a relatively modest lawn and value the convenience of cordless operation. The 37 cm cutting width, 40 L grass catcher and central height adjustment make it a straightforward format for routine home mowing. Its strongest value case is for someone who already has a compatible AK battery and charger; a first-time buyer needs to compare the complete cost of the mower, battery and charger, not just the tool-only price.

STIHL materials use the names RMA 239, RMA 239 C and RMA 239.1 C, and regional listings differ on weight, cutting-height positions, battery inclusion and stated lawn coverage. Treat the suffix and the actual package contents as part of the model name when comparing offers.
What it does well
- Compact cutting width: 37 cm is a practical size for smaller gardens and maneuvering around obstacles, though it will take more passes than a wider mower over a large open lawn.
- Useful collection capacity: the 40 L catcher means clippings can be collected rather than left on the lawn, with capacity depending in practice on grass growth and conditions.
- Shared battery system: STIHL’s UK buying guide places the RMA 239 C in its AK System, where batteries are shared with other garden tools.
- Quiet, cordless format: it avoids petrol refuelling and the exhaust emissions associated with a petrol mower. STIHL describes the Australian model as producing “zero emissions”; that is the manufacturer’s product-positioning claim, not a lifecycle-emissions comparison.
What to weigh against those strengths
- A skin-only package does not include a battery or charger, adding cost if you do not already own compatible equipment.
- Reported runtimes are based on particular test conditions and will not predict every lawn or battery combination.
- At 37 cm, it is not the quickest choice for a larger lawn simply because of its narrower cutting path.
- Published figures are inconsistent across suffixes and markets, so a headline weight or working-area figure may not describe the mower in the listing you are viewing.
What are the RMA 239’s specifications?
The figures below are intentionally separated by source and version. They should not be combined into a fictional “standard” specification: for example, the Ireland brochure’s 24 kg figure differs substantially from the UK RMA 239 C figure of 15 kg without a battery.

The table’s differences are not minor rounding variations. In particular, do not apply the Ireland brochure’s 24 kg and 250 m² figures to a UK or Australian RMA 239 C without checking which configuration the brochure describes. Likewise, the 20 mm lower cutting-height figure belongs to the Ideal Home test entry, while the UK listing and Ireland brochure state 30 mm.
How long does the battery last in real use?
Two independent sources put runtime near 37–40 minutes, but neither number should be treated as a guaranteed mowing time for every owner. Which? lists 37 minutes for the RMA 239 C; Ideal Home reported about 40 minutes in its own hands-on test on 5 August 2024.
Ideal Home tested a 12.5 m² (134 sq ft) dry lawn in warm conditions. That is a small test area, so the result does not establish how much lawn the mower will cover on one charge in thicker, taller or damp grass. Cutting load, battery choice and lawn conditions all affect runtime. STIHL’s Ireland brochure gives a working area of up to 250 m² with an AK 20, a separate manufacturer figure that should not be converted into a universal runtime promise.
If you are buying a bare mower, confirm which battery you intend to use and whether you also need a charger. An existing AK-system owner can assess the mower as an addition to equipment they already have; a new buyer should budget for the battery and charger as part of the purchase.

Does the RMA 239 come with a battery and charger?
Not necessarily. The official Australian skin-only page explicitly says the battery and charger are not included. Package contents can differ by retailer and market, so verify the listing’s included-items section before checkout rather than assuming “mower” means a complete ready-to-use kit.
For a fair price comparison, total the mower, the compatible battery and the charger if you need all three. The available data does not establish a current, region-wide kit price or a current battery-and-charger price, so the £445 Which? typical price checked in June 2025 is a dated UK reference for the RMA 239 C listing, not a current global price or proof of what a complete kit costs.
How heavy is it, and is it easy to store?
The most relevant published weight depends on the exact version and whether a battery is counted. STIHL’s UK listing gives 15 kg without battery for the RMA 239 C; the Ideal Home test reported 16 kg, and Which? lists 16 kg. Stiftung Warentest records 16 kg for the RMA 239.1 C Set with an AK 30. By contrast, STIHL’s 2026 Ireland brochure lists 24 kg for the RMA 239 and presents the figure differently from the other regional material.
For handling and storage, the mower’s 37 cm cutting width gives a useful sense of its footprint, but the available product details do not establish folded dimensions or a specific storage mechanism. If lifting it into a shed or carrying it up steps matters, check the listed weight for the precise package and ask the seller whether that figure includes the battery; do not rely on a different country’s suffix or brochure number.

How well does it cut, collect grass and handle noise?
Ideal Home’s reviewer described the cut quality as excellent and reported no clippings left to clean up after the test. That is a positive result from one household test, not a guarantee across all lawns. The test was performed on a small dry lawn in warm conditions; long or wet grass can place a different load on a mower and catcher.
The 40 L collector is the capacity reported across the product details and the Ideal Home test. A larger catcher would mean fewer emptying stops, but capacity alone does not establish how frequently you will need to empty it: dense growth fills a box faster than a light trim.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ideal Home measured 91 dB in its test. The available evidence does not give a comparable noise figure for rival models or a separate measurement standard, so use it as that reviewer’s observed figure rather than a direct ranking of how loud it is against other mowers.
How does it compare with other mower options?
The available figures support a useful comparison with other RMA 239 variants, but not a reliable specification-by-specification ranking against Bosch, EGO, Gardena or petrol alternatives. No comparable rival model, kit price, runtime, warranty or test result is established here. Compare the same lawn area and package type when shopping: a bare cordless mower is not price-equivalent to a complete battery-and-charger kit.

| Buying situation | What the RMA 239 offers | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| You already own STIHL AK batteries | Entry into the mower may avoid buying another battery and charger; the AK system is shared with other STIHL garden tools. | Check compatibility and whether your battery’s capacity suits your lawn and grass conditions. |
| You are buying your first cordless mower | 37 cm cutting width, 40 L catcher and a tested runtime reported around 37–40 minutes. | Compare complete kit prices and charging arrangements, not tool-only prices. |
| Your lawn is near or above the stated area limit | The Ireland brochure states up to 250 m² with an AK 20. | Confirm the area figure applies to your precise version; consider how lawn condition and cutting load affect coverage. |
| You are considering petrol or a wider mower | The battery-powered push format avoids petrol refuelling and provides a 37 cm cut. | Compare cutting width, run time or refuelling, noise evidence, upkeep and total package cost for specific alternatives. |
STIHL’s Australian description calls the mower “lightweight and manoeuvrable” and “the ideal tool” for home lawn care. Those are manufacturer claims. The published weights range from 15 kg without a battery on the UK RMA 239 C listing to 16 kg in independent entries, with the Ireland brochure’s 24 kg figure requiring separate configuration context; decide whether “lightweight” fits your needs using the exact version’s weight.
Is the RMA 239 worth the price?
It is most defensible as a purchase if the 37 cm width suits your lawn and you can use batteries and a charger already in the AK system. For a first-time buyer, the price question cannot be answered from the mower’s bare price alone: compare the complete setup against complete kits for other options and confirm that the competing models have similar cutting width and intended lawn area.
Which? listed a £445 typical price for the RMA 239 C when it checked in June 2025. That is a dated UK reference, not a live quote or a price for every package. Which? evaluates cutting, collection, ease of use, runtime, coverage and charge time, but its full score is paywalled; the public listing describes the mower as suitable for a medium lawn. Stiftung Warentest’s public RMA 239.1 C Set entry, dated 27 March 2025, does not show all test scores, so it cannot support a claim about an overall grade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check before buying?
- Match the model suffix and country: confirm whether the listing is RMA 239, RMA 239 C or RMA 239.1 C, and use specifications from that market.
- Read the package contents: establish whether a battery and charger are included. A skin-only listing excludes both.
- Check the cutting-height details: published ranges include 30–70 mm and 20–70 mm, and the Australian skin-only page specifies six central settings without a range in the cited details.
- Confirm the weight configuration: ask whether the figure includes a battery and compare like with like.
- Compare total cost: add any battery and charger you need, then compare against complete kits rather than tool-only prices.
- Assess lawn demands realistically: use runtime reports as test observations, not guarantees, and account for grass condition and cutting load.
What do independent tests establish—and what remains uncertain?
The independent evidence is encouraging but limited. Ideal Home provides a hands-on result from a single small, dry lawn test; Which? reports a 37-minute runtime and describes suitability for a medium lawn, but its complete score is not public; Stiftung Warentest’s public listing provides model details but not all test scores. These sources support a qualified view of runtime, dimensions and one reviewer’s cut-quality observation, not a universal reliability verdict.

No universal reliability statistic or unrestricted overall independent test score is established in the available public information. Warranty terms, current regional prices, and a directly comparable set of rival-mower figures are also not established here. Those details should be checked against the seller and the exact market listing rather than inferred from a different variant.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to charge an RMA 239 battery?
In Ideal Home’s 5 August 2024 test, charging took 135 minutes to reach 80% and 180 minutes to reach full charge. Those are that test’s observations, not a guaranteed time for every battery or charger combination.
How much does a replacement RMA 239 knife cost?
Stiftung Warentest’s public entry for the RMA 239.1 C Set, dated 27 March 2025, gives an approximate replacement-knife price of €34. Treat it as an approximate reference, and confirm blade compatibility with the exact mower variant before ordering.
What warranty does the STIHL RMA 239 have?
The cited product and test details do not establish one warranty term that applies across countries and packages. Check the warranty offered in your market and whether its conditions differ for the mower, battery and charger.
Does the RMA 239 have a published independent reliability score?
No universal reliability statistic is established in the public information summarized here. A product-test score, even where available, would not by itself be a long-term reliability rate.
