The Stihl FS 38 is a sensible petrol trimmer for homeowners who mainly tidy lawn edges, paths, borders, and grass around obstacles. Its 27.2 cm³ engine, 15-inch cutting circle, loop handle, and curved shaft make it light and maneuverable. It is not the right tool for sustained bramble, woody-stem, or heavy brush clearing, and an independent 2026 review found only moderate line-feed reliability. For a small garden where occasional edging matters more than maximum power, it remains a practical entry-level choice—provided you accept petrol mixing, noise, vibration, and routine maintenance.
Is the Stihl FS 38 good for edging?
Yes. Edging is the FS 38’s strongest use case because the curved shaft and loop handle are easy to guide beside paths, fences, beds, and trees. STIHL positions it as an entry-level model for home gardeners, and the 15-inch (380 mm) cutting circle covers a useful strip without making the machine cumbersome in tight spaces.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The limitation is workload. The FS 38 is designed around nylon line, not prolonged clearing of dense, woody growth. If your property regularly produces waist-high weeds, thick brambles, or saplings, a more powerful brushcutter with a metal-tool option will be a better match. For ordinary lawn grass and light, occasional edging, its compact layout is an advantage rather than a compromise.
Best jobs for this trimmer
- Cleaning the edge where a mower cannot reach.
- Trimming grass around posts, trees, garden furniture, and walls.
- Maintaining paths, driveways, and small lawns between mowing sessions.
- Light weed and grass work where a narrow, controllable machine is more useful than maximum output.
Jobs better left to another machine
- Continuous clearing of thick brush or brambles.
- Cutting woody stems that normally call for a blade.
- Large areas where a battery or professional petrol model with greater capacity would reduce refuelling and fatigue.
What are the Stihl FS 38’s specifications?
The core figures below combine STIHL’s 2022 technical manual with the current STIHL USA product listing checked in 2026. Weight and power figures use different measurement conventions, so compare like with like when assessing another trimmer.

How powerful is the FS 38 in everyday work?
The 27.2 cm³ engine and published output are enough for normal lawn grass, soft weeds, and repeated edge maintenance. In practice, the machine’s usefulness comes from controllability: a lighter curved-shaft trimmer lets you make short, accurate passes without fighting a large cutting head.
Power falls off as the material becomes tall, wet, tangled, or woody. The line head must spend energy flexing through heavy growth, and the small fuel tank means more interruptions if you are clearing a large area. The FS 38 can handle occasional tougher patches, but treating it as a brush-clearing tool will make the job slower and increase wear on the line, spool, and engine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the engine at the operating speed specified in the owner documentation rather than repeatedly lugging it at low throttle. A sharp, correctly sized line and a clean deflector also matter: oversized or incompatible line increases load and can interfere with the AutoCut head.
What line and head does the FS 38 use?
Regional STIHL information identifies the AutoCut C 6-2 as standard equipment. Its TapAction system advances line when the running head is tapped on the ground, avoiding manual removal of the spool during ordinary trimming. Use compatible 2.0 mm line where your regional manual specifies that diameter; the manual for your exact market takes precedence over generic line sold for other heads.
Using TapAction without wasting line
- Run the head at the operating speed stated in the owner manual.
- Keep the trimmer at a safe height and tap the underside of the head lightly on firm ground.
- Allow the mechanism to release only the amount of line it is designed to feed; repeated hard impacts can accelerate wear.
- Stop the engine before inspecting, clearing, or reloading the spool.
An independent July 2026 review from The Garden Patch scored line-feed reliability at 2.9/5, below its scores for ease of use and value. That does not mean every head will malfunction, but it is a reason to keep the correct line, learn the tap technique, and inspect the spool when feed becomes uneven. If the head continues to feed poorly after the user checks listed in the manual, use an authorised dealer rather than improvising a different spool or line diameter.

Is the FS 38 easy to start and handle?
It is relatively approachable for a petrol trimmer, but it is not as instant as a battery model. STIHL lists a purge-pump primer, a throttle interlock, a translucent tank, and a lined drive shaft. The primer helps draw fuel into the system after storage or refuelling, while the interlock reduces the chance of accidental throttle operation.

The Garden Patch’s 2026 review rated ease of starting 3.2/5 and ease of use 4.2/5. Those scores fit the design: once running, the loop handle and curved shaft are easy to steer, but starting still involves the fuel, choke, and control sequence specified for the engine. Follow the exact cold- and warm-start procedure in your regional owner manual instead of relying on a generic sequence.
Balance and fatigue
The 4.1 kg dry mass is manageable for short household sessions, and the loop handle gives you fine control when edging around obstacles. Fuel, line, and any guard fitted for operation add to the working mass. Keep the shaft close to your body, use a relaxed grip, and let the head do the cutting; forcing the machine sideways increases fatigue and can make the line strike hard surfaces.
What does the FS 38 cost to own?
STIHL USA listed the FS 38 at $219.99 when checked in 2026. That is a reference price for the US market, not a guaranteed worldwide price or a promise of stock. STIHL sells through dealers, so ask a local authorised outlet for the current price, included equipment, assembly status, and service arrangements.
The purchase price is only part of the calculation. You also need the correct petrol and two-stroke oil mixture specified by the manual, replacement 2.0 mm line, and occasional filters, spark plugs, or other service items as required by the maintenance schedule. Petrol handling adds time and storage considerations that a battery trimmer avoids. Conversely, the FS 38 does not require a proprietary battery and charger, which can make its initial cost attractive if you already keep suitable fuel-management equipment.

Questions to ask a dealer
- Which fuel mixture and fuel specification does the manual for this regional model require?
- Is the AutoCut C 6-2 head installed, and which replacement spool or line is approved?
- What safety deflector and handle configuration must be fitted before use?
- Which maintenance can the owner perform, and what work must return to the dealer?
- What is the current price and lead time for an AutoCut C 6-2 replacement head?
How do you set up and operate the FS 38 safely?
STIHL’s owner manual warns: “Because a trimmer is a high-speed cutting tool some special safety precautions must be observed to reduce the risk of personal injury.” Treat that warning as a working procedure, not a formality.
- Read the regional manual first. Confirm the approved fuel, line diameter, controls, starting sequence, guard, and maintenance intervals for your exact machine.
- Inspect before fuelling. Check that the deflector, loop handle, shaft, throttle controls, head, and line are secure. Do not operate with a cracked guard or damaged cutting head.
- Prepare fuel correctly. Mix and handle petrol and two-stroke oil exactly as specified in the manual. Refuel outdoors with the engine stopped and cool, away from flames and ignition sources.
- Wear protective equipment. Use eye protection at minimum; sturdy footwear, long trousers, hearing protection, gloves, and additional protection recommended by the manual are sensible for line-trimming work.
- Clear the work area. Remove loose stones, wire, glass, and other objects that the line could throw. Keep children, pets, and bystanders well away from the cutting zone.
- Start on stable ground. Use the manual’s cold- or warm-start position, keep the head away from people and objects, and do not wrap the starter cord around your hand.
- Trim with controlled passes. Keep the line head parallel to the ground for grass and use the edge of the cutting circle rather than burying the head in dense growth.
- Stop before touching anything. Shut down the engine and wait for the head to stop before clearing tangled grass, changing line, moving between areas, or carrying the trimmer.
- Store securely. Let the machine cool, prevent unauthorised access, and follow the manual’s fuel and storage instructions.
What maintenance does the FS 38 need?
Owner maintenance is limited to the checks and replacement work STIHL lists for users. Typical responsibilities include keeping the cutting head and deflector clear, checking the line and spool, inspecting the handle and controls, and observing the manual’s air-filter, spark-plug, and lubrication instructions where those tasks are designated as user-serviceable.
Do not invent service intervals from another Stihl model. The correct schedule depends on the regional manual and operating conditions such as dust, long grass, and frequency of use. Record when you refuel, reload line, or perform a listed inspection so you can spot a change in starting, idle, vibration, or line feed.
When to stop DIY work
- The throttle does not return freely or the interlock does not work.
- The head continues spinning when the engine should be idling.
- You find a damaged guard, shaft, handle, fuel line, or cutting head.
- Unusual vibration remains after removing wrapped grass and fitting the correct line.
- The engine repeatedly fails to start despite following the manual’s procedure.
Repairs beyond the listed user-maintenance tasks should go to an authorised STIHL dealer. A dealer can also confirm that replacement parts and the AutoCut C 6-2 assembly are correct for your regional version.
How noisy and refined is it compared with a battery trimmer?
The 2022 technical manual lists 97 dB(A) sound pressure and 106 dB(A) sound power. These are high-speed petrol-tool figures, so hearing protection is appropriate and neighbours may notice the machine. Sound pressure is the operator-exposure measure under the stated test method; sound power describes the machine’s emitted acoustic output and should not be treated as the noise level at your ear.

Petrol operation also brings engine vibration, warm-up, fuel mixing, and exhaust. A battery trimmer generally offers quieter starts and simpler preparation, but its runtime, charging time, and battery cost depend on the system. Choose the FS 38 when unrestricted fuel-based operation and a compact petrol engine matter more to you than push-button convenience and lower local noise.
What did the independent 2026 review find?
The Garden Patch rated the FS 38 3.6/5 overall in July 2026. Its category scores were 2.9/5 for line-feed reliability, 3.2/5 for ease of starting, 4.2/5 for ease of use, and 3.9/5 for value.
| Category | Score | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 3.6/5 | A capable but clearly light-duty homeowner trimmer. |
| Line-feed reliability | 2.9/5 | Feed performance deserves attention; correct line and spool setup matter. |
| Ease of starting | 3.2/5 | Usable, though petrol starting is less immediate than battery operation. |
| Ease of use | 4.2/5 | Loop-handle balance and maneuverability are notable strengths. |
| Value | 3.9/5 | Reasonable for occasional edging if you accept fuel and maintenance duties. |
The review also reported no upgrade path to a metal cutting tool. That reinforces the FS 38’s intended role: line trimming around a home, not a platform for progressively tougher clearing attachments.
Is the Stihl FS 38 worth buying for a small garden?
It is worth considering if your work is mostly lawn edges and light grass, you prefer a petrol machine, and you value a compact tool that an authorised dealer can support. The FS 38’s maneuverability, standard AutoCut head, and modest size are well aligned with short sessions around a house.
Choose a different class of trimmer if your priority is clearing dense brush, using metal tools, minimising noise, or avoiding fuel preparation. Before buying, estimate how often you will trim, how far you are from a fuel source, and whether the listed noise and maintenance burden are acceptable for your property.

A simple decision checklist
- Buy the FS 38: small lawn, occasional edging, obstacles close together, preference for petrol, and access to dealer service.
- Look for a stronger brushcutter: persistent brambles, woody weeds, large overgrown areas, or a need for metal cutting tools.
- Look at a battery model: short sessions near the house, low-noise priorities, and dislike of fuel mixing and engine starting.
What should you compare before choosing another trimmer?
If you are cross-shopping, compare the attributes that determine real workload rather than engine size alone.
| Comparison point | What to check against the FS 38 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dry weight and balance | Published dry mass, then assess working balance with fuel and line. | Determines fatigue and control around obstacles. |
| Engine power and displacement | Confirm whether figures are hp, BHP, kW, and at what rpm. | Prevents misleading comparisons between markets. |
| Cutting-circle width | Compare the actual line path, not just guard size. | Wider cuts cover ground faster but can be less precise. |
| Head convenience | Check tap-feed behavior, spool availability, and approved line. | Feed interruptions are a reported FS 38 weakness. |
| Metal-tool compatibility | Verify whether the manufacturer approves a blade and matching guard. | The FS 38 has no reported metal-tool upgrade path. |
| Noise and vibration | Read both sound-pressure and sound-power figures where available. | Useful for hearing protection and neighbour considerations. |
| Starting system | Compare petrol primer/choke steps with battery start. | Important when the trimmer is used infrequently. |
| Operating cost | Include fuel, oil, line, filters, and any battery or charger. | Purchase price alone does not show total ownership cost. |
| Dealer support | Confirm local authorised service and parts availability. | Repairs beyond user maintenance require professional support. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the FS 38’s weight figures differ between listings?
The technical manual gives 4.1 kg as dry weight, while the current US product page lists a 9 lb device weight. Different markets and measurement conventions can include different equipment, so use dry weight for a like-for-like specification comparison and expect the running machine to weigh more after fuelling.
Does STIHL publish an exact runtime for one tank?
No universal runtime figure is stated for the FS 38. Consumption changes with throttle use, grass density, line length, temperature, and operator technique, so a tank-size comparison is more reliable than promising a fixed number of minutes.
Can I fit thicker line to make the FS 38 cut faster?
Do not exceed the diameter or profile approved in your regional manual. The standard head is identified with 2.0 mm line where the applicable manual specifies it; thicker or incompatible line can overload the engine and interfere with safe head operation.
Where should I get a replacement AutoCut C 6-2 head?
Use an authorised STIHL dealer and provide the exact model and regional version. The dealer can verify that the replacement head and spool match your FS 38 rather than relying on a visually similar part.
