For an all-AMD PC with an NVMe drive that you can dedicate to Linux, SteamOS is an option—but its installer wipes the target, and Valve does not yet provide an official dual-boot wizard. For an Nvidia or Intel desktop, or if you want a documented way to keep Windows, Bazzite is usually the more practical choice: it has a graphical installer, GPU-specific images, and Windows dual-boot instructions. Before choosing either, check your graphics hardware, storage, Secure Boot setting, and the games you need to run.

What should you install on a custom gaming PC?

Choose based on the hardware and the Windows games you need—not just which interface looks more familiar. SteamOS is Valve’s Arch-based gaming OS, with a controller-first Game Mode and KDE Plasma desktop. Bazzite is a community-maintained Fedora Atomic gaming system that offers KDE Plasma or GNOME, plus optional Steam Gaming Mode on its Bazzite-Deck images.

Option GPU fit Installer and Windows Interface Best fit
SteamOS AMD; generic desktop support is beta. Nvidia and Intel discrete graphics are not practical targets today. Recovery desktop; “Wipe Device & Install SteamOS” erases the target. No official dual-boot wizard. Steam Game Mode and KDE Plasma desktop. All-AMD PC with an NVMe drive that can be dedicated to SteamOS.
Bazzite AMD, Intel, or Nvidia; choose the matching image. Nvidia Gaming Mode has documented caveats. Graphical Fedora installer; documented Windows dual-boot on the same or a separate drive. KDE Plasma or GNOME; optional Steam Gaming Mode with a Deck image. Nvidia or Intel systems, Windows dual-boot, or anyone wanting a conventional installer.
Windows 11 Full GPU-vendor support. Keep it as-is, or install separately; no Linux-specific setup needed. Windows desktop. Games that require kernel-level anti-cheat, Game Pass, or an Nvidia DLSS-focused setup.

SteamOS 3.9.5 was released for all users on 23 October 2026, according to Valve’s Steam Deck news. Its 3.9 notes also describe updates to motherboard bootloader compatibility and suspend/resume fixes for RDNA1 and RDNA2 discrete GPUs. Valve says Desktop Mode moved from Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3 in those notes. These improvements do not change the basic desktop-install cautions: plan for AMD, NVMe storage, Secure Boot off, and a wipe of the chosen device.

Bazzite is not maintained or certified by Valve. Its Steam Gaming Mode is a SteamOS-style session, not SteamOS itself. Its current ISO build string is not fixed in the installation pages, so use the live picker rather than relying on an old filename or a blog post’s version number.

Can I install SteamOS on any PC?

No. Valve allows installation on additional AMD-powered devices, but that is not the same as certifying every PC. For a custom desktop, specialist reporting continues to treat AMD hardware and an NVMe SSD as the practical requirements; Nvidia and Intel discrete GPUs are not a sensible SteamOS target today.

Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page draws a specific line: “Currently, the only devices officially “Powered by SteamOS” are Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Legion Go S.” It also says, “SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD-powered devices beyond those listed above.” Valve warns that support may be limited for hardware outside the officially supported list and directs PC users to SteamOS GitHub for bugs.

What the AMD and NVMe guidance means

SteamOS 3.7 in May 2025 was the first public expansion beyond Steam Deck. SteamOS 3.8, released in June 2026, was reported by GameSpot as the first image Valve positioned for DIY Steam Machine-style PCs; it remained AMD-only, with discrete AMD graphics described as beta. Ars Technica’s 23 May 2025 account of Valve’s recovery documentation summarized the two hard requirements as “AMD hardware” and an NVMe SSD. TechSpot’s current download/install page likewise advises AMD-based systems, NVMe installation, Secure Boot disabled, and no official dual-boot.

Valve’s current Installation and Repair FAQ does not provide a full desktop CPU or RAM minimum table. Do not infer that a particular processor or memory capacity is officially guaranteed from the Deck’s requirements. If your only boot drive is SATA, or your PC relies on Nvidia or Intel discrete graphics, choose Bazzite or stay with Windows rather than planning around SteamOS.

Does SteamOS support Nvidia?

Not as a practical official desktop installation path today. GameSpot reported on 24 June 2026 that Valve was working toward official Nvidia support for a 2027 release; that is GameSpot’s reporting, not a date Valve states in the FAQ. Community scripts are not the same as an official supported installer, so this guide does not recommend them.

What do I need before installing either operating system?

Prepare the media and backup before you reboot. A single 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 flash drive covers both options: Valve lists 8GB as its minimum, while Bazzite’s current installation guidance calls for 16GB or more. Flashing erases the USB drive, so copy off anything you need first.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Backups: Copy files from any disk that may be changed. For a SteamOS install, physically disconnect every internal drive except the NVMe target; its wipe flow is not a careful Windows-style disk-selection wizard.
  • UEFI: Both paths assume modern UEFI boot. Bazzite does not support CSM/Legacy firmware mode.
  • Keyboard: Have a physical keyboard available for Bazzite if the machine has no touchscreen. A USB keyboard is also needed to unlock an encrypted Bazzite installation.
  • Internet: A connection is useful for updates and first-run setup. Bazzite says internet is not required to install, though its hardware guide recommends it for live testing and setup.
  • Game requirements: If your library depends on kernel-level anti-cheat, plan to retain Windows; Proton cannot make an unsupported anti-cheat system work.

How do I install SteamOS on a custom gaming PC?

Use Valve’s official recovery image and assume the selected device will be erased. SteamOS installation is a recovery-and-reimage process, not a dual-boot setup flow.

  1. Back up and isolate the target. Save files from the PC and physically disconnect every internal drive except the NVMe SSD you intend to erase. This is the safest way to avoid wiping a Windows or data drive by mistake.
  2. Get the recovery image from Valve. Use the SteamOS download page or Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair support page. Prefer the official image over third-party mirrors; older images can lack Mesa updates needed by newer AMD GPUs, including RDNA 4 noted by TechSpot.
  3. Flash a USB installer. Valve’s minimum is 8GB, but a 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 drive is the more useful single choice because the compressed image expands. On Windows, use Rufus; on macOS or Linux, use Balena Etcher. Valve also documents this Linux command, where /dev/sdX must be replaced with the correct USB device: bzcat steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2 | sudo dd if=/dev/stdin of=/dev/sdX oflag=sync status=progress bs=128M. Selecting the wrong device with dd can overwrite it.
  4. Set firmware options. Boot into UEFI setup—often by pressing Del, F2, F12, or Esc during startup—and disable Secure Boot. Valve notes that Secure Boot may need to be disabled to boot the recovery USB on other hardware. Boot from the USB using the motherboard’s one-time boot menu when possible.
  5. Wait for the recovery desktop. The display may go dark while the recovery environment starts. Once it loads, you should see a KDE desktop with recovery options.
  6. Select the wipe-and-install option only if you intend to erase the target. Choose Wipe Device & Install SteamOS and confirm. Valve describes this precisely: “This will fully wipe your device and install stock SteamOS.” The recovery menu also has Re-image Device, Repair SteamOS, and recovery tools; Repair SteamOS is intended to try to preserve games and content, not to replace a fresh installation.
  7. Complete first boot. After the installer restarts, follow the welcome flow for language, network, updates, display size, audio, and Steam sign-in. Once you reach Game Mode, check for system updates in Settings before installing a large game library.

What if SteamOS has no network or the first update fails?

Fdaytalk describes a community workaround for some desktop installations with missing networks or a failed initial update. It is not presented as a Valve FAQ procedure: switch to a console with Ctrl+Alt+F4, log in as deck (the report says there is no default password), then try systemctl start NetworkManager and/or steamos-update. Use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to return to the graphical session. If the commands do not work or the machine is not in that state, do not assume the issue is fixed; consult Valve’s support guidance or SteamOS GitHub for the relevant hardware bug.

Which Bazzite ISO should I download?

Use Bazzite’s official Image Picker and choose for the machine, GPU, desktop environment, and desired Steam interface. The picker is safer than copying a filename from an older guide because ISO naming and builds can change.

Choice What to select Why it matters
Machine Desktop for a custom PC Handheld images are intended for handhelds rather than a standard desktop install.
GPU Matching AMD/Intel or Nvidia image Nvidia images include proprietary drivers. The wrong image can leave you with the wrong driver setup; Bazzite community guidance documents ujust switch-image as a rebase option without a full reinstall.
Desktop KDE Plasma or GNOME KDE is the default and familiar to users seeking a SteamOS-like desktop; GNOME images use the -gnome naming family in guides.
Steam Gaming Mode Bazzite-Deck, including -deck-nvidia where appropriate Deck images add a Gamescope Steam session and auto-boot into Gaming Mode; Desktop Mode is available from Steam’s power menu.

For a couch PC that should boot into a controller-first interface, pick the Deck variant. For a conventional desktop, pick the desktop image and KDE or GNOME. Nvidia is supported with dedicated images, but Bazzite documents major caveats for Nvidia in Gaming Mode that its maintainers say are outside their control. Bazzite-Deck also requires a Steam account for Gaming Mode.

How do I install Bazzite on a desktop or laptop?

Bazzite uses a graphical installer and supports a live environment, so you can confirm that the machine boots before committing to an installation. Its documented desktop requirements include x86_64 architecture, UEFI firmware, a 2GHz quad-core CPU or better, 8GB RAM, and a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 or newer. Plan for at least 64GB free on an internal SSD; 120GB or more is the more realistic target for an operating system, updates, and games. The hardware guide lists 50GB as a minimum and 120GB as recommended, while the desktop guide’s floor is 64GB. Use GPT partitioning; an MBR installation fails.

  1. Back up the target disk. If this is a Windows dual-boot, follow the separate preparation steps below instead of treating the Windows disk as an empty target.
  2. Download the correct ISO. Select Desktop, the right GPU vendor, and KDE or GNOME in the official Image Picker. Choose a Deck image only if you want Steam Gaming Mode. You may optionally verify the ISO’s SHA256 checksum using Bazzite’s documented process.
  3. Flash the image. Use a 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 flash drive with Fedora Media Writer or Rufus, then eject it safely. Bazzite’s desktop hardware guide documents a legacy ISO and says, “Ventoy is not recommended under any circumstance and no support will be provided for it.” The current general installation guide includes additional Ventoy Secure Boot steps, but Fedora Media Writer or Rufus avoids that ambiguity.
  4. Boot the USB in UEFI mode. Use the motherboard’s temporary boot menu, often F9, F12, or Esc. Do not leave USB as the permanent first boot device after installation. The live environment can help you check basic hardware; its gaming performance is not a reliable prediction of the installed system.
  5. Set language and region. In the graphical installer, select language, region, keyboard layout, and timezone.
  6. Select the intended internal drive. Choose the target carefully. Use automatic storage configuration for a normal single-OS installation. Same-drive Windows dual-boot uses the documented automatic-partitioning workflow; manual partitioning requires the legacy ISO.
  7. Choose encryption and account options. LUKS encryption is optional. Bazzite warns, “It will not be possible to decrypt your drive and the data will be lost if you forget your encryption password!” Keep the password somewhere safe; a physical USB keyboard is required to unlock the disk. Do not enable a root account; create an administrator user and remember its password.
  8. Review and install. Confirm the target and settings, start installation, then reboot and remove the USB when prompted.
  9. Finish first boot and enroll Secure Boot if needed. The first boot presents GRUB with the current and last deployment, which provides a rollback target. If Secure Boot remains enabled, follow the key-enrollment instructions in the next section.
  10. Update and configure. Set display scaling and system preferences, then sign in to Steam. Follow Bazzite’s documented installation methods or Flatpak for additional applications; do not use apt on this Fedora Atomic system. Bazzite’s ujust helpers include options for updates, Secure Boot, BIOS setup, and image switching.

Can I dual-boot Windows with SteamOS or Bazzite?

Bazzite has documented Windows dual-boot procedures. SteamOS does not yet have an official dual-boot wizard, so the safe SteamOS approach is a separate drive with Windows disconnected during installation.

SteamOS: use a separate drive, not same-disk dual-boot

Valve’s Steam Hardware Windows Resources page says: “While Steam Deck and Steam Machine are fully capable of dual-boot, the SteamOS installer that provides a dual-boot wizard isn’t ready yet. This will ship alongside SteamOS once it’s complete.” Community separate-drive installs are possible: disconnect the Windows drive, install SteamOS to its own NVMe, then choose the operating system using the motherboard’s boot menu. Do not describe same-disk dual-boot as officially supported.

Bazzite: separate-drive installation is the lower-risk option

Bazzite’s documentation highly recommends physically disconnecting the Windows drive during installation. With Windows on one disk and Bazzite on another, install Bazzite to its own drive and use the UEFI boot menu to select an OS. You can set Bazzite first in firmware boot order if desired. If installing Windows after Bazzite, disconnect the Bazzite drive during Windows setup so Windows does not take over its EFI boot setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bazzite: same-drive Windows dual-boot

  1. In Windows, disable BitLocker and Fast Startup, then reboot.
  2. Use Windows Disk Management to shrink the Windows partition and leave unallocated space for Bazzite.
  3. Boot the Bazzite live ISO and follow the documented automatic partitioning route. The current live ISO offers automatic partitioning; manual partitioning requires the legacy ISO.
  4. After installation, boot Bazzite and run ujust regenerate-grub so Windows appears in GRUB.

There is an upstream installer control that can be confusing: a label suggesting that it formats the Windows EFI partition actually adds Bazzite to that EFI. Read the installer’s disk and partition choices carefully, and do not proceed if you cannot identify the target. Bazzite’s documented dual-boot support applies to Windows; dual-booting other Linux distributions, particularly non-atomic Fedora, is not officially supported.

Do I need to disable Secure Boot?

For SteamOS, disable Secure Boot. For Bazzite, you can leave it enabled if you enroll Universal Blue’s key. These instructions are different; do not apply the SteamOS setting to Bazzite by default.

SteamOS

Valve’s guidance for other hardware says Secure Boot may need to be disabled to boot the USB. Specialist desktop-install guidance treats Secure Boot disabled as a requirement. Leave it off for the SteamOS installation rather than expecting the Bazzite key-enrollment method to apply.

Bazzite

If Secure Boot is on, enroll Universal Blue’s key. At the blue MOK screen, choose Enroll MOK and enter universalblue. The characters are hidden while typing; use an English QWERTY layout, including if the physical keyboard has an AZERTY layout.

Will the installer wipe my Windows drive?

It can if you select that drive—or, in SteamOS’s case, if it is the device being re-imaged. SteamOS explicitly wipes the target; Bazzite’s graphical installer lets you select storage, but a mistaken disk choice can still destroy data. Back up first and disconnect every drive you do not want the installer to touch, especially the Windows drive.

On Bazzite, use the Windows dual-boot procedure rather than selecting a Windows disk for automatic installation. On SteamOS, do not proceed with “Wipe Device & Install SteamOS” if Windows or files on the target must remain. The prompt is not a promise to preserve partitions or create a Windows boot menu.

What happens to games after installation?

SteamOS and Bazzite use Proton to run many Windows games, but compatibility is title-specific. Steam Deck Verified or SteamOS Compatible labels can be a useful first filter, not a guarantee on a custom desktop—particularly one using Nvidia graphics. Check the game’s current reports on ProtonDB before wiping Windows or buying games specifically for Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TechSpot reported over 18,000 titles running through Proton on SteamOS in 2026. Fdaytalk summarized ProtonDB ratings as showing around 80 percent of the top 100 Steam games run well; that percentage is Fdaytalk’s summary, not a percentage published by ProtonDB. Neither figure means every game works on every combination of GPU, launcher, peripheral, and anti-cheat.

When should you keep Windows?

Kernel-level anti-cheat remains a major limit. Fdaytalk lists Fortnite, Valorant, Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, and Destiny 2 among games that fail with Proton because of kernel anti-cheat. If those games are central to your library, retain Windows on a separate drive or keep a Windows PC available instead of expecting a Linux install to replace it.

Other launchers and game-library drives

Bazzite documentation points users toward Linux launcher tools such as Lutris and related options for Epic, GOG, and Amazon game libraries. Heroic is another community-used option for Epic and GOG; Lutris can help with launchers such as Battle.net, EA, and Ubisoft. Availability and per-game behavior vary, so check current launcher documentation before moving a library.

Bazzite uses BTRFS by default. For a secondary game disk, its guidance recommends BTRFS for an SSD or Ext4 for an HDD. Bazzite says NTFS and exFAT/FAT32 are not supported for game libraries: NTFS can cause games not to launch and may eventually risk data corruption under Proton/WINE, while FAT-family filesystems lack symlinks needed for prefixes. There is no reliable shared Windows/Linux game filesystem in this guidance; WinBtrfs is explicitly at-your-own-risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which install should you choose?

Choose SteamOS if the PC is all-AMD, has an NVMe target you can dedicate, and you are comfortable with a wipe-and-reimage installation. Choose Bazzite if you need Nvidia or Intel graphics, a graphical installation flow, or Windows dual-boot. Keep Windows available for kernel anti-cheat games and for libraries that depend on Windows-specific support.

For performance context, Fdaytalk reported two unnamed third-party desktop tests in 2026: Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 208 fps on Windows versus 219 fps on SteamOS in one CPU-limited test, and Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K Ultra at 84 fps on SteamOS versus 85 fps on Windows on an all-AMD desktop. Those individual results are not a general benchmark or a promise for another PC. They do not offset the more important practical difference for many readers: supported hardware, games, and whether Windows needs to remain installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install SteamOS on a SATA SSD?

For a custom PC, plan around an NVMe target. Ars Technica, TechSpot, and other specialist desktop-install guidance identify NVMe as a requirement, while Valve’s current support FAQ does not spell out a complete desktop storage specification.

Can I use one USB stick to install both SteamOS and Bazzite?

Yes. Flashing one image overwrites the USB’s existing contents, so you can reuse the same 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 drive by reflashing it with the other installer when needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I share one game drive between Windows and Bazzite?

Bazzite’s guidance does not support NTFS or exFAT/FAT32 game libraries and warns of launch problems or data risk under Proton/WINE. Use separate game storage arrangements rather than assuming a Windows-formatted disk is a dependable shared library.

Does Bazzite automatically boot to Steam Big Picture or Gaming Mode?

That behavior depends on the image: Bazzite-Deck images auto-boot to Steam Gaming Mode, while Desktop Mode is available from Steam’s power menu. A standard desktop image gives you the KDE or GNOME desktop rather than that default couch-style session.
