You may still be able to finish a Steam trading-card set after its game is delisted, but delisting alone does not tell you whether a particular card can be sold. Steam treats marketability (Community Market buying and selling) and tradability (direct inventory trades) as separate properties. Open the exact card in your Inventory first: its current description and available buttons are more reliable than a general rule about removed games. If Market selling is blocked but trading remains available, a direct trade can still supply a missing card. Once every card in a standard set is assembled, the Badges page lets you craft the set into a badge.
The workflow is therefore: inspect the card, rule out account restrictions, use the Badges page to identify gaps and remaining drops, then choose Market purchase, direct trade, play or booster drops, gem conversion, or badge crafting according to the options that your account and that item actually show.

What does delisting change—and what does it not change?
A delisted game no longer being sold or downloaded does not automatically produce one universal card rule. Valve’s general Trading Cards FAQ says cards can be traded and bought or sold on the Community Market, while Steam-hosted user reports show removed-game cards with no Sell option or with an explicit Community Market prohibition. Those reports establish that exceptions exist, not that every delisted title is treated identically.
Check the individual item. A card can be tradable but not marketable, marketable and tradable, or temporarily restricted by a cooldown or account condition. The Inventory description is the authoritative indication for that card at that moment. In a January 16, 2025, Steam Community discussion about a Forza Horizon 4 card, a participant reproduced the wording, “This item can no longer be bought or sold on the Community Market.” That quotation describes the reported item; it is not a blanket Valve statement covering every removed game.

Steam Support’s Market FAQ also says item descriptions explain eligibility and that Support cannot simply edit an inventory item to make it marketable. Adding Steam Wallet funds, owning a boxed copy, or finding an old activation key cannot override a restriction attached to the item.
How do I check whether the exact card can be sold or traded?
Inspect the card before spending time searching for buyers. A missing Sell button can be caused by the card itself, your account, or a temporary hold, and those causes require different fixes.
- Open the card in Inventory. In Steam, open your profile, choose Inventory, select the relevant game category, and open the individual card. Look for the Sell and Trade controls and read the complete description, including any cooldown date or marketability notice.
- Record the two properties separately. “Tradable” means another Steam account may receive the item through a trade. “Marketable” means the item can be listed for Community Market purchase or sale. One property can be available while the other is not.
- Check the account, not just the item. Steam lists Steam Guard status, a recently authorized device, purchase-history requirements, bans, trade holds and item cooldowns among possible restrictions. If several unrelated items fail in the same way, an account condition is more likely than a delisting-specific rule.
- Read the displayed reason. A sentence that specifically says the item cannot be bought or sold on the Community Market points to item eligibility. A notice naming a hold, new device or account restriction points to a different remedy and may include a date when the restriction ends.
- Do not ask Support to change the card’s status. Valve’s FAQ explains that Support cannot turn a non-marketable inventory item into a marketable one. You can still contact Support for an account-access or security problem, but that is different from requesting an eligibility override.
How do I find the missing cards and remaining drops?
Steam’s Badges page provides the most useful set-level view. It identifies what you own, what is missing, whether play drops remain, whether your account can receive a booster, and which friends hold cards you need.
- Open your Steam profile and choose Badges.
- Open Badges in Progress and select the delisted game.
- Compare the owned and missing card slots. Treat the list as a current inventory check; it does not guarantee that a Market listing or another player’s copy exists.
- Read the remaining-play-drops and booster-eligibility information shown for your account. If the page provides a friend or trade route, use it to contact people who own the missing cards.
- Keep the set type in mind. Regular cards complete the standard badge set; foil cards belong to a separate foil set and do not fill regular-card slots.
Valve says most games initially yield about half of their card set through play. Its FAQ illustrates the mechanic with an eight-card Half-Life 2 set in which four cards can drop through play. That is a general example, not a promise that a removed title still has drops available on your account. After the allotted drops, eligible accounts may receive random booster packs. A booster contains three cards, and the result is random, so it can repeat a card you already own rather than supply the exact gap.

Which route fits my card?
Choose the first route whose prerequisites are actually visible in your account. The table below separates what each route does from what it cannot do.
| Route | Use it when | What to verify | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community Market | The exact card shows a Sell or Buy path and your account can use the Market | Item eligibility, listing availability, account restrictions and the fee shown before confirmation | Only marketable items qualify; a delisted title may have no listings even when the item is eligible |
| Direct Steam trade | The card is tradable but not marketable, and another user owns the needed copy | Correct card, both accounts’ trade status, holds and the proposed exchange | There is no Market listing or cash settlement, and a confirmed trade cannot be undone by Support |
| Play drops or booster | The Badges page shows remaining drops or booster eligibility | Title-specific availability and the random result of each drop or three-card booster | You may receive duplicates and cannot assume a missing card will appear |
| Craft badge | You have one complete matching standard set | That every card belongs to the same game’s standard set | The cards are consumed and exchanged for badge rewards |
| Convert to gems | The card offers conversion and you no longer need to keep or trade it | The conversion prompt and the amount of gems offered | The original card is surrendered; gems are not proceeds from a Market sale |
How do I sell or buy a delisted game’s card?
Use the Community Market only when the individual card is marketable and the account is permitted to transact. Delisting does not create a workaround for a card whose description prohibits Market transactions.
- Open the card and confirm that the Sell control is present. If the description says it can no longer be bought or sold on the Community Market, stop there; listing attempts will not change that status.
- Select Sell and review the displayed buyer price, your expected proceeds and the fee before submitting. Valve’s current Community Market FAQ identifies a Steam transaction fee of 5%, with a $0.01 minimum, for applicable Market transactions; fees and rules can change.
- Confirm the listing only after checking the exact game, card name, condition shown by Steam and quantity. A card with a similar name from another title will not complete the set.
- For a purchase, search the exact card name and inspect the title association before confirming. A delisted game may have no active listings, even if that card remains marketable.
- Keep all settlement inside Steam’s displayed flow. Steam does not provide protection for an off-platform cash sale, and a wallet balance cannot make a prohibited item marketable.
If Sell is absent but Trade is available, the problem is not solved by waiting for a buyer or adding funds. Move to a direct trade after checking for a hold or account restriction.
How do I trade a card that cannot be listed?
A direct Steam trade is the practical path when the card is tradable but not marketable. You need another user with the missing card and an exchange you both accept.

- From Profile → Badges → Badges in Progress, select the game and identify the exact missing card.
- Use the friends shown by Steam as a starting point, or contact users in relevant Steam trading discussions. A discussion or third-party service is not an endorsement by Valve, so verify the other user’s offer inside Steam.
- Open the trade offer and compare every item name before adding it. Check that the card is from the correct game and is the regular or foil variant you need.
- Review both sides of the offer, including quantities and any agreed Steam items. Do not rely on a screenshot or a promise to add an item later.
- Confirm only when the final offer is correct. Valve’s FAQ states: “All trades are final; make sure you really want to make a trade before confirming.” Steam Support also says it does not restore items that leave an account through trades or Market transactions.
Trade holds and other security checks can delay delivery even when both cards are tradable. Read the notice attached to the offer and wait for the stated condition rather than sending a replacement trade that could create another irreversible loss.
Can play drops or a booster finish the set?
They can help only when Steam still shows a route for that game and account. A delisted title should be treated as title-specific: do not assume that owning the game, having played it years ago, or seeing a booster listed elsewhere means new drops are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemaining play drops
The Badges page identifies whether your account has drops left. Valve’s general model gives most games roughly half of their card set through play, but the exact number depends on the game’s set and the drops already credited to your account. If the page shows zero remaining drops, additional play is not a guaranteed source of cards.
Booster eligibility
After play drops are exhausted, an eligible account may receive a randomly granted booster pack. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes three cards per booster. The pack is not a targeted order: it may contain duplicates, and an account that is not shown as eligible will not receive one merely because the game was once installed.

Supply expectations
Booster eligibility does not prove that a booster will arrive or that another player has one to trade. Use the status Steam displays for your account, and treat any outside listing or user claim as unverified until the item appears in your own Inventory.
When should I convert an unwanted card to gems?
Gem conversion is a disposal option for an eligible card, not a substitute for selling it. Steam-hosted users describe converting unwanted cards to gems when the card offers that action, but the conversion gives up the original card and does not produce cash or Steam Market proceeds.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the card in Inventory and look for the gem-conversion command.
- Before confirming, make sure the card is not the last copy needed for your standard or foil set and that you do not intend to offer it in a trade.
- Read the gem amount shown by Steam and confirm only if that amount and the loss of the card are acceptable.
- Keep the resulting gems as a separate inventory resource; they do not inherit the card’s title or guarantee a missing card.
If the conversion control is absent, do not infer that the card is valuable or defective. The available actions are determined by the item and Steam’s current rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I craft the completed badge?
Crafting is the finish line for a matching standard set. It consumes the cards and produces profile rewards, so craft only after deciding that you no longer need those copies for a trade or sale.

- Open Profile → Badges → Badges in Progress and select the game.
- Confirm that every required regular card is present and that no slot is a foil card or a card from another title.
- Select Craft a Badge and review the confirmation screen, which identifies the cards being consumed.
- Confirm the craft. Valve lists a badge, a random emoticon, a random profile background, a possible coupon and 100 XP as the standard craft rewards.
- Inspect each reward’s own Inventory description. A Steam Community report cautions that rewards from a non-marketable removed-game set may also be non-marketable; do not promise that a badge reward can be resold.
A standard game’s badge can be upgraded by collecting and crafting further complete standard sets, up to five crafts. Foil cards form a distinct foil set and foil badge, so they require their own complete collection rather than filling regular-set gaps.
What should I do when the obvious option fails?
Match the symptom to the narrowest explanation instead of assuming the game delisting is responsible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Sell is missing, Trade is present: Treat the card as tradable but not marketable unless the description identifies a temporary cooldown. Seek a direct trade, not a Market workaround.
- Sell and Trade are both unavailable on one card: Read the item description for a permanent prohibition or cooldown, then check whether the card is locked by a recent acquisition.
- Several unrelated items cannot be traded: Check Steam Guard, new-device authorization, purchase-history requirements, bans and trade holds. An account restriction can affect otherwise eligible items.
- The Badges page lists a gap but no Market listing exists: Use the friend/trade route, remaining drops or a booster route only if Steam shows it. No listing does not prove that the card is unobtainable.
- A booster or drop repeats a card: Random distribution does not target missing slots. Keep the duplicate for a trade, craft it if you later complete a set, or consider gem conversion if offered.
- You crafted and the reward cannot be sold: Inspect the reward itself. The marketability of the original cards does not automatically transfer to the badge, background, emoticon or coupon.
- You sent the wrong item: Contacting Support does not guarantee recovery. Valve says items that leave through trades or Market transactions are not restored, which is why the final offer must be checked before confirmation.
What should I verify before a final trade or craft?
- The game name and exact card title match the Badges page.
- You have distinguished regular from foil cards.
- The card’s Inventory description shows the action you intend to use.
- Your account has no Steam Guard, device, purchase-history, ban, hold or cooldown issue that blocks the action.
- You have checked the displayed Market fee and proceeds when selling.
- You understand that a trade or craft consumes or transfers the item and cannot be assumed reversible.
- You have inspected the marketability of any badge reward instead of assuming it follows the cards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a game still drop Steam cards after it has been removed from sale?
Sometimes, but the title and account must show an active drop or booster path. A game’s former availability in the store is not evidence that new drops remain, so use the status on your Badges page rather than relying on an old guide.
Why can I trade a card but not sell it on Steam?
Steam assigns Market eligibility and trade eligibility independently. The publisher or platform can leave direct transfers enabled while prohibiting Community Market transactions, so the two buttons do not have to appear together.
Does a three-card booster guarantee one card I am missing?
No. Three cards are selected randomly, which means a booster can contain duplicates or cards you already own. It is a possible supply source, not a targeted completion order.
Can Steam Support unlock a delisted game’s card for Market sales?
Valve’s Market guidance says Support cannot modify an inventory item to make it marketable. Support can address an account or security restriction, but that is different from changing the card’s built-in eligibility.
