This matters because the two controls have different scopes. A Windows screen-saver setting governs the Windows screen-saver dialog, while Steam’s feature is an idle animation within Big Picture. Changing one should not be assumed to switch off the other. If the animation is appearing only while Steam is open in Big Picture, start with Steam rather than changing Windows settings as a substitute.
How do I disable Steam’s Big Picture screen saver?
Check Big Picture Mode’s Power settings for a screen-saver start control. A SteamOS user identified the path as Settings > Power > Start Screen Saver > Disabled, but that report is not an official confirmation of the Windows client’s menus.

There is no purchase required to try the setting. The fix is a Steam configuration change, not a repair product or accessory. A controller can be useful for navigating Big Picture on a couch or television, but it is optional and is not a remedy for the screen saver itself.
What if I only want to stop the screen saver during a game?
Steam has a separate option to disable the screen saver when in game. Valve confirmed that option in its Steam Deck stable-channel release notes, but those notes do not establish its exact submenu on every client.

Keep the difference clear when troubleshooting: Customization is the documented place to choose the visual, while the firsthand SteamOS report places the full-disable choice under Power. The official release notes do not establish that Customization has a universal Off option. Do not interpret selecting one of the two documented animations as disabling the feature.
Valve also documents an optional config/uioverrides/screensavers directory under the Steam installation for additional animations. That is an advanced customization route, not the straightforward answer to “I cannot figure out how to disable it.” If the goal is simply to stop the idle animation, start with the relevant Power or idle controls instead of modifying files.
How do I change the Windows screen saver instead?

Think of the screen saver and display sleep as two different outcomes during inactivity. Disabling an animation means the animation should not start; it does not mean that the monitor will turn off at a particular time. Conversely, choosing a display sleep interval is not the same as choosing or disabling a Steam animation. If your goal is to stop a moving image but keep the display on, the screen-saver control is the issue. If your goal is to have the display turn off after a period of inactivity, consider the separate sleep controls.
Microsoft recommends putting an idle display to sleep to save energy. The timing and behavior of display sleep are separate from Windows’ screen-saver selection, and both are separate from Steam’s Big Picture settings. Valve also refers separately to battery and AC idle timers, so do not confuse those timer controls with a choice of screensaver artwork or assume that changing one setting necessarily changes the others.
Could Steam opening at startup be the reason?
