Steam Remote Play Together lets one person run a supported local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen game while friends join remotely. The host owns and installs the game; guests generally do not need to buy or install it. Launch the game, open the Steam Friends List or the Overlay with Shift+Tab, choose the Remote Play Together invite option, and have each guest accept. For the smoothest session, use a fast wired connection and have guests connect controllers before joining.
What is Steam Remote Play Together?
Remote Play Together streams the host computer’s game video and audio to remote participants and sends their controller or keyboard-and-mouse input back to the host. It is designed for games that already support local multiplayer rather than games with their own online multiplayer service.

Friends receive a stream of the game, not a normal multiplayer copy running on their machines. Voice chat, controllers, and optional keyboard-and-mouse sharing are supported through Steam’s remote session tools.
Valve says, “Only the game is displayed to your Friends, never your desktop or other Top Secret stuff.” That separation means a guest normally sees the game window rather than the host’s entire desktop.

What do I need before inviting anyone?
Prepare the host computer, the game, and each guest’s input device before opening the session. Compatibility is determined by the individual game, so check its Steam store page first.
Host requirements
- A Steam account that owns the game.
- The game installed on the host computer.
- A Steam store page that lists Remote Play Together and a compatible local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen mode.
- A sufficiently fast internet connection. Valve describes the feature as low-latency streaming over a fast connection and recommends wired networking for the best experience.
Guest requirements
- A way to accept the invitation: Steam on a computer, Steam Link where prompted, or the Steam Chat and Steam Link mobile flow on a phone or tablet.
- A compatible controller for a separate player, unless the host grants keyboard-and-mouse sharing and the game supports that arrangement.
- A stable network connection. The guest does not generally need to own or install the game.
Check the game’s actual player behavior
Remote Play Together support does not guarantee that every title handles controllers, player slots, or keyboard input identically. A game may require a particular local multiplayer menu, a separate controller for each player, or a manual player-slot assignment after everyone joins.
How do I check whether a Steam game supports Remote Play Together?
- Open the game’s Steam store page.
- Look for the Remote Play Together feature label alongside the local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen descriptors.
- Read the listed local player count and any control notes. Treat those details as game-specific rather than assuming that every supported title uses the same number of players or the same input layout.
If the Remote Play Together label is missing, Steam’s standard workflow cannot turn that title’s local mode into a supported remote session. A game that has native online multiplayer may still be playable online, but that is a different feature and follows the game’s own networking rules.
How do I start a Remote Play Together session?
The host starts the game and sends the invitation from Steam. Keep the game running on the computer that owns it while guests connect.
- Launch the game on the host computer. Start the title normally from Steam and enter its local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen mode if the game requires that before players can join.
- Open Steam’s social controls. Open the Steam Friends List, or open the Steam Overlay with
Shift+Tabwhile the game is running. - Choose the Remote Play Together invitation option. Steam presents the control for inviting a remote participant from the social interface. The exact placement can vary between the Friends List and Overlay.
- Select the people to invite. Choose Steam friends directly, or use the Invite Anyone link flow when it is available for the session.
- Wait for acceptance. A friend accepts through Steam Chat. Someone using an invitation link opens it and follows the Steam or Steam Link prompt shown for that device.
- Connect and assign controls. Ask each guest to connect a controller before or during the invitation. If a computer guest will use a keyboard and mouse, grant that sharing permission in the session controls.
- Confirm player slots in the game. Once guests appear, open the title’s local multiplayer screen and assign or confirm each player. The menu name, slot order, and controller behavior depend on the game.
When all players are assigned, begin the match or cooperative level from the game itself. Steam handles the stream and input path; the title still controls its own lobby, character selection, and ready checks.

How do I invite someone who is not already a Steam friend?
Use Steam’s Invite Anyone link when the option appears in the Remote Play Together controls. The recipient can open the link and follow the Steam or Steam Link prompt instead of first becoming a Steam friend.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start the supported game and open the Friends List or Steam Overlay.
- Select the Remote Play Together invite control and choose the Invite Anyone link flow.
- Copy or share the generated invitation link through your preferred messaging service.
- Have the recipient open the link on the device they plan to use and follow the displayed join instructions.
- Approve any input-sharing request only if the guest needs keyboard-and-mouse control.
Valve’s Invite Anyone flow allows a guest to join without a Steam account. The prompt can direct a computer participant to Steam or Steam Link; a mobile participant uses Steam Chat to accept and then Steam Link for the game stream.
Do guests need to buy or install the game?
Usually, no. The host must own and install the game, while guests join the host’s running copy through the stream. This applies to supported local multiplayer modes, not to every game that happens to be available on Steam.
The host still needs enough local player capacity in the game. If a title supports only two local players, inviting additional people will not create extra slots. Steam’s current overview says one host can support up to four players, or more with fast connections; treat that as general Steam guidance, not a guarantee for every title.
Which invitation method should I use?
| Method | Best use | Account requirement | What the guest does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam friend invitation | People already in the host’s Steam Friends List | Steam friend relationship | Accepts the invitation in Steam Chat, then joins the session |
| Invite Anyone link | A guest who is not already a Steam contact | Can join without a Steam account through the link flow | Opens the link and follows the Steam or Steam Link prompt for the device |
The friend invitation is generally the quickest choice for existing Steam contacts. The link is more flexible for a one-time guest or someone who does not use a Steam account, but the recipient may be asked to install or open Steam Link depending on the device.

Should guests use controllers or keyboard and mouse?
A separate controller is usually the clearest arrangement when each person needs independent game input. Keyboard-and-mouse sharing is an alternative that the host can permit, but it shares those devices through the remote session and may not map cleanly in every game.
Controller setup
- Connect each controller to the guest’s computer or mobile device before accepting the invitation, or connect it immediately after joining.
- Wait for Steam to show the guest as connected.
- Open the game’s local multiplayer screen and press the required join button on each controller.
- Confirm that each controller controls the intended player slot before starting.
A USB game controller for PC is an optional practical accessory for a computer guest who lacks a compatible gamepad. It is not required if the guest already has a supported controller or if the game works acceptably with permitted keyboard-and-mouse sharing.
Keyboard-and-mouse sharing
The host controls whether keyboard and mouse are shared. Grant that access only when the game needs it, because the guest’s input is then sent to the host computer as part of the session. If the game expects one keyboard for a single local player, sharing may not provide separate controls for multiple guests.
Can someone join from a phone or tablet?
Yes, when the invitation-link and mobile app flow is available for the device. A mobile guest accepts the invitation through the Steam Chat mobile app and then uses the Steam Link mobile app to receive the stream. Touch input may work where the game and Steam Link provide an appropriate control layout; a controller is preferable for titles that require precise or simultaneous inputs.

How can I improve stream quality and reduce lag?
Remote Play Together is sensitive to the host and guests’ network paths because video, audio, and input travel continuously during play. Start with the network before changing game controls.
- Connect the host computer to the router with Ethernet when possible. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience.
- Ask guests to use a strong, stable connection and avoid heavy downloads or uploads during the session.
- If the stream is unstable, lower the game’s resolution.
- Consider disabling vertical sync when following Valve’s published troubleshooting guidance for an unstable stream.
- Close unnecessary applications on the host computer so the game and streaming process have more available system resources.
- Test the local multiplayer menu before beginning a long campaign session. This catches missing controller assignments without risking progress in the game.
Lowering resolution can reduce the amount of video data the host must encode and send, but it does not fix a game that lacks Remote Play Together support or a guest who has not been assigned a local player slot.
Why can my guest see the stream but not control the game?
Video without usable input usually means the controller, player slot, or permission state is incomplete. Check these items in order.

- Verify keyboard-and-mouse permission. If the guest is using a computer keyboard and mouse, the host must grant sharing access.
- Reassign the player inside the game. Steam can show a connected guest while the title still has that guest waiting outside a local player slot.

- Ask the guest to open the link on the intended device and follow the Steam or Steam Link prompt rather than opening it in an unrelated browser session.
- Restart Steam Link or the Steam client on the guest device if the prompt does not load.
- Reconnect the guest’s controller after they rejoin, then assign the player slot again inside the game.
A link-based guest may need Steam Link or the Steam desktop app depending on the device and the invitation prompt. If the game itself has no available local slot, a successful invitation will not add another playable position.

What are the main limitations?
- It is not a universal online multiplayer converter. The game must expose a supported local multiplayer or shared-screen mode.
- The host is the central computer. The host runs the game and carries the rendering and streaming workload.
- Player counts vary. Steam’s general guidance mentions up to four players, or more with fast connections, but individual games can support fewer local players.
- Input behavior varies. Some games expect one controller per player; others rely on shared keyboard input or a particular local lobby sequence.
- Latency affects play. Fast, stable connections and wired networking help, but a remote stream cannot behave exactly like controllers connected directly to the host.
- Mobile participation has extra steps. Mobile guests use Steam Chat to accept and Steam Link to play, and touch controls depend on the title and app support.
How is Remote Play Together different from a game’s native online multiplayer?
Remote Play Together is a Steam streaming feature for games whose multiplayer is local, shared-screen, or split-screen. Native online multiplayer is implemented by the game and usually gives each player a separate networked game client, account flow, and online lobby.
Choose Remote Play Together when the title supports local multiplayer but does not provide the online mode your group needs. Choose the game’s native online mode when it exists and you want each player to run the game independently, use the game’s own matchmaking, or avoid routing all video and input through one host computer.
What is the safest way to run a first session?
- Check the Steam store page for Remote Play Together and the local player count.
- Connect the host by Ethernet if possible and ask guests to use stable connections.
- Launch the game and enter its local multiplayer menu.
- Invite one guest first, using a Steam friend invitation or an Invite Anyone link.
- Confirm that the guest can see the game and control a free player slot.
- Add additional players only after the first connection works.
- Lower resolution or disable vertical sync if the stream becomes unstable, following Valve’s troubleshooting guidance.
This staged approach separates Steam connection problems from game-specific lobby and controller problems, making a failed join easier to diagnose.
How we selected the guidance
The procedure above follows Steam and Valve’s documented Remote Play Together workflow: compatibility labels, host-side game ownership, Friends List and Overlay invitations, Invite Anyone links, controller and keyboard-sharing controls, mobile Steam Link participation, and wired-network troubleshooting. Where behavior depends on a particular title, the instructions identify that dependency instead of assigning a universal player count or control layout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Remote Play Together with a game that has only split-screen mode?
Yes, provided the game’s Steam page explicitly lists Remote Play Together. The remote players occupy the same local split-screen session that would normally be used by people sitting at the host computer.
Does a guest need a Steam account to join from a link?
Not necessarily. Valve’s Invite Anyone flow is designed to let a link recipient join without a Steam account, although the recipient may still need Steam Link or the Steam desktop app according to the device prompt.
Can a phone guest use touch controls instead of a controller?
Sometimes. Touch input depends on the game and the control layout supplied through Steam Link; games requiring several precise simultaneous inputs are generally better suited to a connected controller.
Can I invite more people than the game’s local player count?
You can send invitations, but only the number of local slots exposed by the game can play. Steam’s general guidance of up to four players, or more with fast connections, does not override a title’s own limit.
